Chapter Eleven: "Hidden in Plain Sight"

Logan tapped his fingernails on the desk impatiently, coolly asking him. "Tell you what. You let me contact them and I'll tell you anything that you want. Deal?" Sean kept the scissors to the cable, compromising hopefully. "I would... but I lost contact with him and so has NASA." Logan closed his eyes, his whole body losing its tension. Staggering back into the wall, Logan slid down to the floor and mumbled out to himself. "Then I'm too late..." Sean set down the cable and scissors, moving around the desk to ask Logan curiously. "What's going on?" Logan pushed his hood back off his face, defeatedly muttering out. "Harvest season." Sean crouched down but didn't say anything. He just gave Logan a worried look. Tilting his head back against the padded wall, Logan calmly told him. "Everything you think you know about your history is wrong. Your species didn't come from apes... Otherwise, there would be no apes for you to put in zoos. Your species was native here. You call them cavemen. You were simple creatures that wanted peaceful lives. You still do deep down or... or tropical paradises wouldn't still be what you desire to escape too."

Logan hefted a sigh, continuing on softly without looking at him. "We changed all that. When we arrived here. You were pests. You kept taking anything that wasn't nailed down. Our scientists studied the planet for years. We built a colony here and found that your species was curious enough to learn. So... We kept you around like... farm animals. Content without knowing what we were raising you for." Sean raised a hand to stop him, saying a bit shakily. "Are you saying you guys came from Dinosaurs?" Logan shook his head, correcting seriously as he looked him in the eyes now. "No. I'm saying we ARE the dinosaurs. We didn't go extinct. No giant meteor hit the planet. Think about it. If a meteor that big hit the planet... You'd see the massive impact. The meteor would still be lodged in the planet and larger than Pangea. We made that shit up... The truth was that we started experimenting with DNA. Slicing genes and breeding new life. Hybrids able to adapt to the planet better."

Sean blinked, mumbling out a bit doubtfully. "That doesn't make sense. Dinosaurs were BIG and there were so many different kinds with small brains." A deep growl left Logan's throat, before he stated through his teeth. "Humans come in all shapes, colors, and sizes. Each befitting their region. So, don't act like you're the only species with variety. And for your information... Your reptiles use more of their brain than you do. My species came here because your planet was perfect for reptiles. Our size was too big to sustain life for long... So, my kind found a way to adapt. They gave their children a future here and continued the work of their ancestors. Growing and advancing. We built culture as you know it. Some of us more successful than others. Egypt was most prosperous. It is why lizards are worshipped in almost every region is history. Sadly... the more your kind learned about us... the more you started to realize what we ate. What we were raising you for. We went from being worshipped to being the thing you feared in the dark of night. The demons that crept into your bedrooms and stole children."

Goosebumps sprang up along Sean's arms. He wanted this to be false and made up... but why did it make sense? Logan shifted a little to stretch his legs out, continuing on dryly. "The monsters in your history... Dragons, Sea serpents, Medusa, and so many others. Reptilians have been behind everything. Even in religion. I mean come on... A Serpent tempts Eve into eating an apple of knowledge? How more on the nose could we get?" Sean's breathing slowed a bit as he processed that. Logan looked over his own hand, adding in casually. "Think about how much technology has jumped over the years. Leaps and bounds. Ever wonder why? Because we only give you what you are ready for as a species. We see what you can handle through media. Movies, TV, Internet news, Video games and Social Media profiles. 'Leaked' information. It's all about knowing what makes you angry and what terrifies you. We use it to keep you calm, and we use it to rally you up into wars. Makes it easy to take people... because if the animal knows it is getting raised for slaughter. Does it enjoy its life?"

Sean fell to his ass, staring at Logan in disbelief as he strained out. "You're lying... That can't be..." Logan turned reptilian eyes on Sean, bluntly replying. "Believe it. We've been playing this game with your species for a very long time. Misdirection. We shake a little green alien story in front of you and like a dog... You take it and run with it. You squeak it until the squeaker breaks, and you come back for more. So, we give it to you." Sean swallowed, starting to hug himself anxiously. Logan leaned closer to Sean, staring deep into his eyes as he practically purred out to him. "A predator doesn't reveal itself to prey. It hides in plan sight. You can't kill something that you can't see. And when the monsters look like you... How do you trust anyone?" Sean scooted away from Logan, shakily snapping out. "Stop it! Why are you doing this?!" Logan shifted onto all fours, but he didn't rest on his knees... He rested on his feet. Something about it was frightening and triggered a primal urge to run in Sean.

Logan stayed as still as a statue, staring him down as he informed him seriously. "We sought out this planet to turn it into farmland. You saw how big we were. Imagine millions more like us on another planet. We sent them data on how we adapted. Our solution to end war with our herbivore kin was too adapt them to omnivores. We grow plants here. We raise livestock. Every few hundred years, they come. They take a share of the plants and they take your kind... and they sell you like meat to my kin. While we on Earth suffer some 'draught' or 'famine' for a time. We work hard to fake everything. All to keep your kind in blind bliss. Whatever helps you sleep at night." Sean shook his head, then began inching backward as Logan started to walk flawlessly in his crouched position like a stalking predator. Logan's skin rippled to take on more reptilian features, while he purred out in a buttery voice. "I'm with the Order of the Auryn. We run everything on this planet. However, we have adapted to human behavior. Our kin from Pangea, have not. They see a human... they eat them. The Order thinks they can tell our government back on Pangea how to run their planet by holding out shipments in order to get more tech in our trade. But that is not going to make them happy."

Sean jumped as his back hit the far wall, prompting him to yelp out. "Why not?" Logan stopped within arms reach of him, regaling gently. "Because they don't care about your happiness. They care about being fed. Imagine all those cruel mill farms that hurt their animals and produce lots of meat. Now just imagine what they do to YOUR kind on my home planet. Why do you think we've been pushing for people to eat healthy? Go vegan? You didn't like the growth hormones and steroids in your food... You make your farm animals eat healthy. Well... turns out we like that too." Logan grabbed his ankle and Sean gasped from the contact. Logan yanked him toward him, bracing over him on all fours as he purred over his neck curiously. "Now... The question remains. What do I do with you? Slipping up was my fault... I am sorry. But I should clean up my mess. I'll make it quick and don't worry about your family." Sean's eyes widened as he watched tiny scales on Logan's skin rise up to change color before setting back down. Logan cracked his neck as his face structure changed to look exactly like him!

Logan opened his mouth, his voice gurgling distortedly in his throat until he stopped and told him in Sean's own voice. "They won't lose you right away. You'll just start acting a little strange... before I move on. It will be easier on them than finding your body." Sean started panting a little as he asked timidly. "Are you going to eat me?" Logan's green reptilian eyes replaced the bright blue of Sean's, before he answered. "Worse. I'll put you on the shipment out." Logan moved a hand to Sean's neck, slowly squeezing until the he couldn't breathe. Sean grabbed Logan's wrist desperately with both hands, pleading out in a strained voice. "Wait...! You... don't..." Sean used all his breath trying to talk to him and began arching his back to struggle against Logan's impressive grip. The office door creaked open, causing Logan to jerk his head in that direction with a threatening hiss. Sean reached out to the door, hoping it wasn't Mark's mother. His vision was blurring making it hard to tell, until Chica began to bark at Logan.

Logan's grip released Sean as he turned to face Chica and hissed loudly. Chica sank into a bow for a second, then jumped forward and barked at him aggressively. Logan slipped out of his clothes, his body changing into a large tan lizard with a long tail. Sean rolled to his side, coughing and gasping for air. Forcing air into his lungs, he yelled out. "Chica, run!" Logan hissed again, then leapt straight for Chica. Chica whined and began to yelp in distress as Logan chased her out into the hallway. Forcing himself up, Sean staggered out into the hallway and slumped against the wall. His body was fighting the urge to pass out. At the end of the hallway, Chica dashed into the kitchen with her tail tucked between her legs, high-pitched yelps leaving her. Logan reached the island separating the kitchen from the living room and leapt over it flawlessly. More screams left Chica as she managed to whirl around and run back out of the kitchen before Logan's long lizard snout snapped onto her leg.

Logan certainly had a thing with dogs. Just as Logan leapt back over the island counter to chase Chica into the living room, Sean seized the moment to roll over the counter into the kitchen. Snatching up a large kitchen knife from the knife block. Sean's breaths turned into uneven panting as Chica let out a pained yelp. Whirling around, he screamed out with the knife raised. "LET HER GO!" In the living room, Logan had a scaly hand on Chica's neck pinning her to the rug. Logan's long tan tail swayed menacingly behind him as he looked up and hissed out darkly. "Why should I? She threatened me!" Sean's hand shook as he held up the knife at the ready and stated back coldly. "You started it. You were threatening me first." Logan slowly raised his hand, letting Chica crawl away to hide behind the couch. Logan's eyes never left Sean's as he growled out in a menacing voice. "What do you plan to do with that, Sean? Kill me?" Sean was starting to shake so bad that he couldn't think. He was afraid to look away from Logan.

Logan hopped silently up onto the island counter and Sean backed up to put some distance between them. Logan perched himself there, staring at Sean with emotionless eyes as he told him calmly. "You know I can't let you live. You know too much now." Sean took a jagged breath, before telling him hopefully. "Why? You know no one would believe me... And... You must be afraid of something. Why else would you try to warn the rescue shuttle?" Logan didn't move or answer. The longer the words hung in the air, the more the idea stirred up Sean's thoughts. After a minute, Sean slowly started to lower his hand, whispering out a bit stunned. "Wait a minute... The unknown transmission. It wasn't for us... It was one of you warning the rest on Earth, wasn't it?" Logan lifted his chin a little, answering in a numb tone of voice. "Once again, you're a little behind. Our Ambassador is on that 'Rescue' shuttle. He went up there to try and talk to the one they sent to discuss the future of this farming business. No one wanted to wait. By the time my group translated the message. It was too late, it seems. The Reptilian imprisoned on that station... He's here to kill our Ambassador and take over the business. Out with the old. And that is bad for you."

Sean put his fear aside to tell him seriously. "Send a crew up there and save him then!" Logan blinked slowly, replying sarcastically. "I would... I tried to get a message to the Ambassador, remember? But I told you. My kind doesn't want to. Quite frankly, they are set in their ways. Adapting to a human mentality that the problems of their home world don't matter here. To the Reptilian leader on that station... We have declared an act of war by refusing to just do our job. So, His crew is here to replace us and downsize the livestock. For the good of Pangea. You'll either be taken to be sold and eaten as prime grade meat on Pangea. Or left here on Earth to breed until the next harvest season." Sean shoulders fell, blurting out seriously. "Your group that translated the message... could they find a way to send you up to save him? Or are you a coward too?" Logan tensed up and he opened his mouth to say something, when the front door unlocked. Sean looked to the front door, then back at Logan. Logan was gone from the island counter.

Sean stopped breathing. Where had a lizard his size gone off too? Sean's eyes scanned all over the kitchen from top to bottom. He looked for any sign of moment. Would Logan attack him? He became so paranoid that when Mark's mother called his name it completely startled him. Dropping the knife to the tile floor to keep from stabbing himself, he covered his face and took deep breaths as his body shook violently. Mark's mother slammed the door shut, dropping her grocery bags to rush over and hold his shoulders as she nervously asked him. "Honey, what happened? Why are you shaking?" Sean lowered his hands from his face to her shoulders, asking her in a dead serious tone of voice. "What do I always talk about with Mark?" She raised an eyebrow looking completely confused but shyly mumbled out. "Dicks...?" Sean lost all his seriousness and wrapped his arms around her to hug her close. Chuckling into her shoulder, he was confident that she was herself. Only Momiplier would say that with such innocence.

She hugged him tightly like a mother trying to protect him from something. Rubbing his back to comfort him, she asked him gently. "What's going on? Are you feeling alright?" Sean hugged her tighter, unable to stop his body from shaking. He couldn't tell her the truth. Instead, he told her timidly. "I had the worst nightmare... And when I woke up... I just couldn't settle down." Her hand began to stroke his hair, while her voice warmed and told him lovingly. "Oh honey... Let me put the groceries away and I'll take you out somewhere." She started to pull away and Sean protested with a shaky voice. "No! I'm-" She cut him off by raising a hand, then began to inform him as she put groceries away. "No, Sean. You need to get out of this house. It's got you compressed tighter than a ball made up of rubber bands." Swallowing, Sean discreetly moved to the island counter to tentatively move his hand over it. When he didn't touch anything, he felt silly and set his hand down. Letting out a heavy sigh, he watched Chica scramble into the kitchen with her tail between her legs.

Kneeling down to pet her, he tried to calm her as he looked her over for any injuries. She looked fine physically, but mentally she was just as shaken up as himself. Pulling her close, he hugged her and told Mark's mother. "I'll go if we can take Chica too. I don't want to leave her home alone." She chuckled, telling him happily. "We can take her along." Sean smiled for a second, until he saw the pattern on the kitchen wall move. Sean's blood practically froze in his veins. Logan's camouflage ability wasn't just limited to looking like humans... but environments too. To Be Continued...
