Chapter Forty, Frog Choir Feast
After what had happened on the train, Professors Tonks and Black, and Madam Pomfrey joined Professor Flitwick in the Entrance Hall (who was meeting his Choir members before the Sorting to go over the material one last time), to meet up with Izzy, Luna, Neville, Ginny and Slytherin Seventh Year: Camille Bordeaux, to check them over as these students were the worst ones affected by the Dementor, the latter quartet only being affected by secondary exposure, while Izzy got the full front of it. When Izzy and the others ran into the Entrance Hall to get out of the torrential downpour, the other members of the Choir were already waiting behind Professor Flitwick while the Seventh year Slytherin Camille Bordeaux was behind Madam Pomfrey.
"Are you all okay?" Sirius asked frantically, his silver eyes assessing them noticing that they were physically okay if a little withdrawn and pale.
"Before you all declare you're okay, I want to check you all over." Madam Pomfret said in a businesslike tone, stepping back from Camille who was given the all-clear and turned to enter the Great Hall. One by one Madam Pomfrey checked them over, starting with Izzy, Luna, Neville and Ginny and working her way through Fred, Ron, Hermione, George, Kellah, Celeste, Lee and finishing with Percy.
"How are they, Poppy?" Andromeda and Fillius asked, looking over their (favourite) students.
"They are relatively fine, they need some sugar in their system, especially those who were directly affected by the Dementors, either a sweet dessert and/or a hot chocolate and an early night. What was that bumbling fool of a Minister thinking of sending Dementors onto the Hogwarts Express with children who don't know the Patronus Charm. I dread to think what would've happened if Remus and the Aurors hadn't been there." She shook her head to collect herself before she turned towards the students standing before her suddenly stern.
"I want to hear you've had an early night, all of you! Whatever you were thinking of doing before you went to bed, forget it! It'll just have to wait for another night, no reading, no talking, and no pranking! I want you all to just ready yourselves for bed and go to sleep after the feast, I do not say this to be mean but for your own good. After the trauma you have gone through today, some more than others, your mind, body and magic needs a certain amount of sleep to be able to fully recuperate before your classes tomorrow otherwise you'll end up in my Hospital Wing with Magical Exhaustion and trust me you will not like the consequences if it's due to ignoring my warnings and trust me; I will find out!" She warned them, assessing all of them to make sure they were heeding her warnings.
"We'll heed your advice Madam Pomfrey." Percy promised.
"Good." She nodded before her mood suddenly changed again as she smiled sweetly at Izzy - who was now receiving a tight hug from her father - and the rest of the Choir. "Good luck and I shall see you in the Great Hall."
"Cousin, you heard Madam Pomfrey, Izzy is fine. Remus protected her and the others. It was a wise decision to have him on the train with her but you need to let her go now as Filius still needs to talk to her and the First Years will be here soon." Andromeda coaxed her younger cousin softly, not that she could blame him as she would be like that with Dora if she were, Mother Magic forbid, in that position.
"Okay." Sirius sighed, trying to hold back the Grimm who was as anxious as him over his pup, wanting to make an appearance to make sure himself that their pup was okay. "Good luck Bambi, you're going to be brilliant. Good luck Luna, everyone. Come on, you lot." Sirius said to the Weasleys and Co., releasing Izzy with a kiss to the forehead while trying to herd her friends into the Great Hall who all wished Izzy, Luna and everyone else 'good luck'; Neville paused on his journey into the Hall to hug his sister and best friend and pass over Trevor who was in a glass vivarium so he couldn't escape before he joined the others in their profession into the Great Hall.
"Now, let's all head into the Trophy Room for a quick practice before the First Years arrive." Professor Flitwick announced.
"Andromeda, I shall see you shortly." The stout Professor nodded to his colleague and led the way with his select students following behind him, a smile was brought to his face upon hearing they were all asking how Luna and Izzy were, he really had made a better choice this time with his selection. "Oh, Miss Lovegood, Miss Potter-Black, have these before we start rehearsing it'll help curb the lasting effects of those horrible beings." He announced suddenly, pausing to fish two Chocolate Frogs from his pocket passing them to said students.
"Thanks Sir." Izzy and Luna mumbled as they set off again munching on the frogs in silence, their minds still filled with their horrifying memories.
***
Once the Sorting was over, Flitwick rose from his seat which signalled the members of the Choir to follow suit, quickly they fell into the swell of things claiming their positions and their instruments or toads/frogs as if it were natural, filled with muscle memory. As Professor Flitwick raised his baton, Izzy, Luna and the rest of the Choir took a deep breath expelling their nerves while intaking air to fill their lungs with air to maximum capacity. The next moment the Great Hall was filled with the melodic sound of the Choir's soulful voices, particularly Izzy, Luna and Daphne who all sounded like nightingales. It was a shock to certain people (Snape) who didn't even know that they, or other members of his House or those in the other Houses could even sing, he just thought they joined it to get out of classes and to get attention but that apparently was never the case.
"'Double, double toil and trouble
Fire burn, and cauldron bubble
Double, double toil and trouble
Something wicked this way comes
Eye of newt, and toe of frog
Wool of bat, and tongue of dog
Adder's fork, and blind-worm's sting
Lizard's leg, and owlet's wing
Double, double toil and trouble
Fire burn, and cauldron bubble
Double, double toil and trouble
Something wicked this way comes
In the cauldron boil and bake
Fillet of a fenny snake
Scale of dragon, tooth of wolf
Witches' mummy, maw and gulf
Double, double toil and trouble
Fire burn, and cauldron bubble
Double, double toil and trouble
Fire burn, and cauldron bubble
Double, double toil and trouble
Fire burn, and cauldron bubble
Something wicked this way comes!'"
As soon as the last note ended from the students, the musicians coming to a tuneful end and the toads/frogs did their little croaking/chirp at the end, all of the Great Hall did a standing ovation with raucous applause; there was cheering, whistling, clapping and some were even stomping their feet while the teachers looked on proudly joining in with the applause it truly was the best way to welcome the new students to the school, they could already see that frayed nerves had been settled. While Professor Filius Flitwick stood back cheering almost the loudest - that part went to the two remaining Marauders, the Weasley twins, Kellah, Celeste, Ron and Neville (the New Generation of Marauders the teachers had dubbed them as) - but he didn't mind, he was incredibly proud of his students as he beamed and clapped for them with tears in his eyes. They all deserved fifty points for this performance.
"Well done! Well done! I am so incredibly proud of you all that words cannot hope to express, this was one hundred percent better than any rehearsal we've EVER done so I award all of you fifty points each!" Professor Flitwick squeaked at them, earning bashful thank yous before they headed back to their House tables for the Start of Term announcements, which unfortunately; would bring down the jubilant mood of the Hall; all thanks to an incompetent Minister.
"Good evening everyone," Headmistress McGonagall greeted, smiling at all the new and old faces.
"I wish to welcome our new First Years to Hogwarts and it goes without saying that I want all our old students to make them feel welcome. It is also on this note that I must warn you that any form of bullying or discrimination of ANY kind will NOT be tolerated and will result in your immediate suspension where you will have to have a meeting with myself and/or Deputy Headmistress Longbottom, your parents and Head of House, and depending on the circumstances the head of our Board of Governors may join us as well. Your re-enrolment to Hogwarts will depend on your attitude and the circumstances of this meeting." She said sternly looking firmly at each student who was held captivated by their Headmistress.
The moment McGonagall started introducing the classes and Professors for the benefit of the First Years, Draco Malfoy - who sat directly behind Izzy, Neville and Fred - decided it was safe enough to tease her.
"Pottah!" Draco hissed, but Izzy just ignored him. "Pottah! Hey Pottah!" He continued to hiss leaning closer towards the Gryffindor table that he was almost leaving his seat.
"What!?" Izzy hissed, already on edge due to what had happened on the train and the fact there were Dementors at the gates - they had passed them in the Thestral drawn carriage which had reduced Izzy, Neville and Luna to shivers and a cold sweat.
"Is it true? Is it true you actually fainted?" Draco questioned, a smirk playing around his lips as Goyle pretended to faint beside him. At once multiple protests fell from a variety of lips.
"Malfoy, that is not funny!" Daphne, Theo and Gemma admonished while Blaise who sat on the other side of Draco slapped him around the back of the head.
"Malfoy, we may have the start of a tentative friendship but if you are going to joke about something that you could NEVER possibly understand then all bets are off! You have NO idea what it's like to hear a loved one be murdered while you're a baby, so if you carry on I'll show you why us Potters are known for our Warrior and Battle magic besides our Potions and what the true Black Madness looks like. You're from a cousin branch via your Mother; whereas I, on the other hand, am from the main branch due to the current Lord Blood-Adopting me making me his daughter!" Izzy hissed, glaring darkly at the boy, her hair a fiery-red which was even giving off steam from her anger, causing him to gulp and mutter an apology and turn away from her.
It was silent at the Gryffindor table for all of a moment before Seamus Finnigan looked at Izzy with heart eyes as he laughed in delight.
"That was brilliant Izzy! Absolutely brilliant!" Izzy just smiled tightly at him, although if anyone felt that she was too harsh, she didn't care as she didn't see it that way as she wasn't going to take any crap this year from anyone.
"Are you okay, love?" Fred asked, pulling Izzy into his side comfortingly, as Izzy went to reply she suddenly tensed further - if it were possible - as McGonagall explained the reason for the Dementors and the terrible situation they were all burdened with.
"Now, despite mine and the other teachers' exhaustive efforts, we have been forced to agree to the Minister's wishes, so it is therefore I confess the terrible burden we all must share; Hogwarts will play host to the Dementors of Azkaban until such a time that Peter Pettigrew is captured once again. Although, they are stationed at every entrance to the grounds and have been instructed not to enter the grounds under any reason, a word of caution; Dementors are vicious creatures and will not distinguish between the one they hunt and any who get in their way.
It is not in the nature of a Dementor to be forgiving, so I implore each and every one of you to give them no reason to harm you!" McGonagall said grimly, feeling guilty for the terrified faces gazing up at her, especially those who had been affected the most by the Dementors on the train, but she couldn't in good conscience allow them to walk around the school without warning them beforehand. "However, if you feel threatened at ANY time during the course of the year I implore you to speak to a member of staff immediately. Also, Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light." It was with that final note that the Welcome Feast was rather subdued to the teachers dismay who were used to the raucousness of the Great Hall at the start of term Feast, unfortunately setting the tone for the rest of the school year.
