Chapter 4
Poseidon's point of view
I decided to go see Percy, he hasn't visited lately and I know he has a lot on his mind right now since his son is now twelve and that's usually when monsters start attacking demigods. When Percy first accepted godhood I never thought that he would have a relationship with a mortal so soon after the daughter of Athena had broken up with him. I know that it was hard for him not to interfere in his son's life, but somehow he managed not to. I know that he is looking forward to finally being able to reveal himself to his son. I met the boy once but obviously I couldn't reveal who I was so I just gave the boy his sword, without saying much to him.
I knock on the door to Percy's palace and not long after Percy opened the door he said, "Hi Dad"
I said, "Hello Percy" and I followed him into his Palace.
Once we got in I could see what Percy had been doing. On the mirror in his living room was a scene that we had suspected would happen soon. We didn't know exactly how it would happen but we knew it was coming. The mirror showed my grandson in his school's gymnasium facing two Laistrygonian giants.
One of the giants threw the metal ball that he was holding toward a mortal boy. Suddenly the ball changed direction, and instead hit the giant that had thrown it. I was a bit confused about what had happened. I could only assume that Luke had discovered one of his powers, but I didn't know what exactly he had done. When I glanced over at Percy he had a faint smile on his face, I got the feeling that the smile would have been brighter if Luke didn't have one more Laistrygonian left to face. Out of curiosity I asked Percy what Luke had done, and he told me that he had reversed time. I looked back at the mirror, and I saw that Thankfully Luke remembered what I had said about the ring I gave him and after a moment of surprise when his ring turned into a sword he quickly put it to use.
I heard Percy sigh with relief when the second giant disintegrated, but then I heard him groan when the teachers blamed the damage to the gym on Luke. After this Luke left with his satyr Sam Wood. He would be taking him to camp and informing his mother of what happened.
After the image disappeared from the mirror I smirked at Percy and said "I guess you know now what I had to deal with every time you got yourself into danger."
Percy looked slightly amused when he said "I couldn't really help it, the monsters would usually find me not the other way around." After he said that I just smiled at him amused.
Luke's point of view
After Will finished showing me around camp we heard a horn go off.
"What does that mean?" I asked.
He said "That means it's time for dinner, I have to go lead my cabin there."
I nodded understanding we had walked by the dining pavilion earlier, and will had told me That I would be sitting at the Hestia table until I was claimed. Like Chiron he seemed certain that my father would claim me at dinner, like he already knew or suspected who my Dad is.
I walked to the dining pavilion and sat down at the Hestia Table after all the other cabins arrived I seemed to be the center of attention especially for the older campers they would look me over and then a look of confusion or realization would cross their face, like I looked familiar and they were trying to figure out why, or maybe they were trying to guess my godly parent. Most of the tables were talking and I had a feeling that they were talking about me.
Chiron banged his hoof on the marble floor of the pavilion and once everyone was silent he began to speak. He made some announcements and then he said, "And we have a new camper with us tonight..."
Chiron was interrupted by gasps from many of the campers; they all seemed to be looking at something above my head. I looked up and saw an image of a Pegasus flying over crossed swords above my head.
Chiron said, "All hail Luke Charles Smith son of Perseus god of time, tides, waves, swordsmanship, loyalty, and heroes."
Since everyone was already sitting down they couldn't really bow or kneel so they stood in order to do so. I felt weird being recognized like that, I'd never been anyone important, I was just another weird kid that bullies loved to pick on. After that, we got our food and everyone started walking to the fire in the center of the pavilion so I followed.
As I was walking toward the fire a bit confused about what everyone was doing, a blonde haired guy with eyes that contained a mix of blue green and brown who looked to be around fifteen fell into step beside me.
He said, "Hi I'm Hudson, Son of Hades."
I said, "I guess you already know who I am."
he nodded.
I asked, "Why is everyone dropping some of their food into the fire?" I asked.
"Burnt offerings for the gods, they like the smell," he explained.
I said, "really?"
I couldn't understand why the gods would like the smell of burning food, but the look on Hudson's face told me to take this seriously.
We walked up to the fire and saw Hudson drop some of his barbeque into the fire and say "Hades"
I was next, well at least I know which god to give it to I thought. I dropped some of my food into the fire and said "Perseus."
on our way back to the tables Hudson told me that in order to fill my glass I have to speak out loud what I want and my glass will fill with it.
As I was leaving the pavilion I a girl caught up with me she looked to be in her twenties she had brown hair and brown eyes with gold and sea green specks in them.
She said, "Hi I'm Christina Jackson daughter of Perseus"
so this must be the girl that my dad adopted I thought to myself.
She led me to the amphitheatre where we would be having the campfire I sat with her for the sing-along, we sang songs which were led by the Apollo cabin, we also ate s'mores. After the campfire, we headed to the Perseus cabin for the night. Since it was getting dark I couldn't really get a good look at the cabin but I would look around more in the morning.
After Christina went into the bathroom to change I was thinking to myself that I hadn't been able to bring anything with me other than the things I had at school this morning. So I didn't have anything to change into. I wondered if Sam had contacted my mom and how she had reacted when he told her what happened. I don't really know for sure if my mom knew what my dad really is or if he kept that from her.
All I really know based on how she acts when I ask her about him is that she loved him a lot and I think she still does since she hasn't really tried to find anyone else. While I was lost in thought I got the feeling I was being watched I looked up and not too far away from me stood a man, he looked to be in his early thirties he had messy black hair and eyes that were identical to mine. Well, I guess the proper way to put it would be to say that I looked like a younger version of him. I instantly knew who this man must be
"Father?" I said it as more of a question than a statement.
Smiling he said, "yes I'm your father."
After he said that a mix of emotions went through me but to start I settled on anger.
I said, "Do you realize how much you hurt Mom by leaving? Or how hard it was for her to raise me on her own? For a while, she had to work two jobs just so we wouldn't have to live on the streets! I'm pretty sure she never got over you! If I asked her too many questions about you she would be near tears!"
He sighed sadly and said, "I'm guessing that my leaving hurt her just as much as it hurt me to do it. I didn't want to leave but I knew that by staying I would be putting both of you in danger. If I had stayed you might have realized who you are too soon, and monsters would have found you sooner, or Zeus might have found out and possibly tried to hurt you or your mother. I couldn't risk that, I wanted both of you to be safe for as long as possible so I had no choice but to leave. as for not helping you well, there are ancient laws that prevented me seeing either of you until now, despite that I did bend those occasionally, I just didn't want to risk doing it too many times for fear of being caught. I wanted to be there for you but I couldn't. I was forced to watch you grow up from a distance, but I did what I could to keep you safe. Years ago I told Chiron about you..."
I cut him off saying "I knew it! I could tell because he seemed to recognize me even though we had never met before."
after the words left my mouth I wanted to slap myself, because I probably shouldn't have interrupted him like that even if he seemed like a pretty nice guy and is my Dad. But to my surprise, he just laughed. Then he turned serious.
He said, "if I was any other god I wouldn't have been pleased about being interrupted, for that matter I probably wouldn't have been too happy about your little rant earlier either. I'd suggest you watch how you speak to gods, most of them aren't as forgiving as me, but if you're anything like me I will probably end up protecting you every time you say something stupid."
he continued on from where he had left off when I had interrupted him. he said, "I have been watching you for years. Earlier this year I told Chiron what school you would be in and he had Sam sent there to watch you and make sure you got here safely. I did help, but I could really only do it indirectly thanks to the ancient laws. Even now that you know about me there is only so much I can do. I am not as restricted as the other gods since I am the god of heroes but I can still only do so much."
A new question popped into my head and I asked him "Are Christina and I..."
"My only demigod children." he finished for me slightly amused.
he answered "Yes you are. I fell so deeply in love with your mother that even after I was forced to leave her I wasn't interested in being with anyone else. I even turned down Aphrodite herself because I still love your mother. If it wasn't for the fact that I am a god I might have married her.I know that you may be annoyed that I wasn't there for you, but believe me when I say that I would have been if I could have."
My father did look truly saddened by the fact that he couldn't be there for me, and that he'd had to leave my mom so I was pretty sure that everything he had said was the truth. I decided to give him a chance, besides I have always wanted to know my father so now that he is standing right in front of me I have to at least give him a chance.
I asked, "Dad, Mom said you visited me once is that true? I've always felt like I've seen you before but I couldn't remember it."
A slight smile crossed his face, probably because I called him Dad.
He answered, "once only a few days after you were born I visited you, and in doing so I broke the ancient laws. I couldn't risk visiting you more than once because Zeus isn't exactly the caring type that would understand why I did it. He would be too focused on punishing me for it. That's why you can't tell anyone about it. besides the other campers would probably be jealous if you told them."
Then I thought of another question.
I asked, "Was it you who gave me this?" referring to my ring that was also my sword.
He smiled and said, "No I still couldn't directly interfere with you. That was a gift to you from your grandfather Poseidon god of the seas, he was the man who gave it to you. I wouldn't be surprised if you get a visit from him soon."
Next, I asked, "Dad why did everyone here seem surprised by my name? Mom told me that you helped her choose my name but she never said why you chose It."
when I asked that question my father seemed to get a faraway look in his eyes like he was lost in memories.
I said, "Dad."
that brought him back to reality.
He answered, "Even your mom doesn't know the whole story behind why I suggested your name, she knows that I'm a god and about this camp but when I suggested your name I just told her that Luke and Charles were the names of two of my friends that died to defeat the Titans, but the truth is that 18 years ago the Titans tried to retake control of the world. At this time I was still a demigod at this very camp. As the war with the Titans was just getting started I went on a mission with Charles Beckendorf, a son of Hephaestus, to blow up a cruise ship full of monsters that was headed toward New York.
The plan was to place the explosives in the engine room and then make our way to the helipad where we would jump into the sea and once we were far enough away we would detonate the explosives. Things didn't go as planned though; there was a spy at camp who had told the Titans we were coming so Beckendorf was captured and he told me to leave, I got off the ship and Beckendorf sacrificed himself so our mission could succeed.
Luke Castellan was a son of Hermes, he sided with the Titans and became the host for the titan lord but in the end, he realized that the gods are better than the Titans and that his father did care about him. He sacrificed himself to defeat the Titans. That is why I named you Luke Charles Smith; I named you after two fallen heroes."
I said, "So the campers that seemed surprised when they heard my name..."
"Are survivors of the war, or have heard the stories of what happened during the war." He finished for me.
As I was processing this new information he said, "Oh and don't worry about that little problem at school, Chiron and Sam will take care of it."
"What do you mean?" I asked.
he just said, "you'll see" I didn't question him further on the topic. It was after this that Christina came out of the bathroom.
When she saw our dad she yelled, "Dad!" and ran over and hugged him, he happily hugged her back.
She asked, "Why didn't you tell me I had a little brother?"
he started talking to her for a while, and it was a bit annoying to have them talking about me like I wasn't there, so I blurted, "I'm still here you know"
Dad glanced back at me with an amused expression on his face before returning to his conversation with Christina and said, "I can help him with his Powers when I'm here, but I expect you to help him with them when I'm not."
Great, they're talking as if I'm not here again I thought to myself. Christina Nodded understanding what Dad had said. After they finished talking I made a split second decision and ran over and hugged my Dad he was a bit surprised but he happily returned it.
I looked at him and said, "Dad I forgive you, I understand, you did what you did to protect us."
He smiled at me, and then he pulled away from our hug and said, "I have to go, but before I go Luke take a look in that chest at the end of your bed,"
I was a bit confused but I went and did what he had asked. When I opened it I saw some of my things from home, as well as a new camp half-blood tee shirt like everyone else here wears.
I looked up at him and said, "Thanks, Dad."
smiling at me he said, "You're welcome Son." And then he left making the scent of the sea in the cabin just a bit stronger.
