Chapter 16: Annabeth

I wonder if I can stab someone with a hot dog.

A couple of tables were pushed together to form one large one at the front of the dining pavilion. In an effort to bond, Chiron had all the head counselors from each cabin sit with the members of Chaos' army. Naturally we all started talking and laughing right?

Wrong.

It was completely awkward. All of us campers kept shooting looks at each other and playing with our food. Leo tried making a few jokes and getting us to talk, but ultimately failed. Chiron made polite conversation with Mercury, but other than that it was completely silent. Finally, Omega cleared his throat and looked up from the grapes he was racing across his plate.

"So...you guys still play Capture the Flag?" Everyone stared at him while the one named Vulcan elbowed him.

"What? I love Capture the Flag. Blood and glory, fun stuff right?"

A couple of campers laughed nervously a little before nodding their heads and turning back to their food. I eyed Omega wearily.

"How'd you know we played Capture the Flag?" I asked. He coughed a little and laughed, a hint of nervousness in his voice.

"Well, you know...uh...I just assumed cause of, you know, the um..." he turned toward Vulcan for help, making me even more suspicious. I leaned forward a little.

"Cause of the what?" I asked. This time I was the one being elbowed. Piper shot me a look before smiling at Omega.

"Sorry about that," Piper said with a hint of charmspeak in her voice, "Annabeth probably forgot the fact that you guys were demigods before joining Chaos' army. You probably went to Camp Half Blood too once, right? Annabeth's just a little jumpy sometimes." Omega laughed.

"Yeah, yeah we did. That's what I was going to say before Annabeth interrupted me. And trust me, I know Annabeth's jumpy. I've had plenty of examples of that today." Everyone laughed at his joke this time, either because they thought he was funny, or because they were scared of him. Probably both.

Which made me wonder if the hot dog on my plate was sharp enough to run Omega through with. I rolled my eyes at him, and went back to stabbing peas with my fork. Leo grinned and ruffled my hair.

"Ah, don't be offended Annabeth. We all know that you get a little...'excited' sometimes." He said 'excited' like I was a puppy who kept peeing on the carpet. I scowled at him and slugged him in the arm.

"Get off me, Leo. I don't need you to patronize me. I'm fine." Leo just kept grinning and turned to Omega.

"And to answer your question, yes, we do still play Capture the Flag. Why? You guys lookin' for a little competition against this piece of raw muscle and machoness?" Leo gestured to himself while wiggling his eyebrows. Everyone rolled their eyes but Omega laughed.

"You're on, Valdez! Us against the camp. We can start training right after we kick your butts." Omega kept laughing while Vulcan thumped him on the head.

"Omega! We're here to help each other, not try and kill each other trying to steal some glorified blanket." Omega waved Vulcan away.

"Dude, calm down. Think of it as a little healthy competition. Besides, it'll be a way to see their fighting skills, see what they need to work on." I turned toward Chiron to see what he thought. He seemed to contemplate the situation.

"Maybe a game of Capture the Flag would be good. A way for the campers to relax before the war that's about to begin. We can do it tomorrow, after supper." Chiron looked at all of us gathered and nodded. "Tell the others about the game, I have a few Iris messages to make." He galloped away and left all of us alone. Leo's smile got wider, making him look a little wild and crazy looking.

"How bout making things a little interesting?" Leo said while looking at Omega, "If you win, you can have the Hephaestus cabin while you stay, which is rigged with cameras by the way."

He winked at the female Chaos members who threw a roll at him. The Hephaestus cabin started yelling at him, from the table right next to ours. Leo turned towards them.

"Hey, head counselor here! My word is law half sisters and brothers!" Leo winked and turned back to Omega. Nyssa, one of Leo's siblings, glared at him and muttered what was probably curses under her breath.

"As I was saying," Leo smiled," you guys can get the Hephaestus cabin instead of those cramped tents by the woods, which are monster-infested, by the way." I couldn't see his face, but I could tell Omega was probably smiling.

"Deal." Omega said, his hand outstretched to shake Leo's. But Leo shook his head.

"But if we win," Leo began, "you have to, um..." Obviously he hadn't thought this through. Suddenly, an idea came to mind and I smirked.

"If we win," I started, getting up and leaning towards Omega from across the table, "you have to take off your hoods."

Leo glanced towards me and grinned mischievously. Jason looked between me and Omega, prepared to break up a fight if one started.

"Yeah...yeah I like the sound of that! If you win, you guys get our cabin. If we win, the hoods come off!" Leo smiled and stuck his hand towards Omega.

"We got a deal or what, cloak-head?" He looked at him tauntingly. Omega looked towards the others. Vulcan shook his head repeatedly, while Mercury and Diana seemed to be urging him to accept. Venus and Pluto just seemed stunned that all this was happening. All of a sudden, Omega slammed his hands on the table and leaned towards me. It was still too dark to see his face under the hood.

"Deal, Valdez. I'm gonna enjoy sleeping on your bed while you cuddle next to some hellhound." Omega leaned away from me and shook Leo's outstretched hand.

"In your dreams, Omega!" Leo smirked and leaned away from him. He turned towards the rest of the camp who had gone silent.

"Attention demigods! Since you guys probably heard us, you know what's happening so get ready! Tomorrow, we're about to whup the butts of some cloak-wearing old guys!" The camp laughed, and surprisingly Chaos' army did too. "So get to sleep! We can't steal flags if we're busy drooling on our shields!"

Everyone left to head to their cabins, while the members of Chaos' army went down to their tents. I saw Mercury play tackle Leo and they wrestled on the ground a little, laughing. I watched them a little before turning around to go to my cabin. Before I could, though, someone tugged me by the elbow and spun me around.

"See you on the battlefield, Annabeth." Omega looked at me then walked away.

I growled at his retreating figure and stalked off to my cabin.

Oh, you'll see me alright. I'll make sure of that.

Omega's not gonna know what hit him.
