Chapter 14: Annabeth

I wonder how many doughnuts it would take to get Blackjack to trample him again.

I walked towards the woods, with Pluto's arm still draped around my shoulders. I was still pissed off about what Omega said. No one talks to me like that. No one. I tensed up thinking about it and Pluto just sighed.

"Annabeth, calm down. Omega was probably just in a sour mood since he almost got turned into a pancake. I'm sure he didn't mean to insult you." 

"It's not just that," I said,"It's the fact that he treats me differently than everyone else. He seems fine, like a regular demigod when he talks to you guys and the other campers. But when Omega talks to me, he's all bitter and stuff." Pluto laughed, much to my surprise.

"Well, we didn't almost skewer him when we first met him. You probably didn't get on his good side when you held a knife to his throat." I rolled my eyes.

"Still! It was an honest mistake. I thought he was someone I knew..." my voice trailed off as the memories of Percy started rushing back. Us at the canoe lake, in Paris. Gods, I missed him. I shook my head.

"Anyway, it's not my fault," I continued, "It's those stupid cloaks you guys wear! If I saw what Omega looked like, I would've known to back off. Plus, I wish I could see how you guys look. You all remind me of  friends I used to have." She stayed silent for a moment, sensing my frustration. Pluto sighed.

"I do too, Annabeth. You really think I want to wear this thing when it's like 60 degrees out? Ick, I'm sweating bullets under here. But Lord Chaos has ordered it. Something about hiding our identities, protecting our loved ones. I get why we have to, but I still don't like it." 

I nodded in agreement. Pluto seems like someone I can trust. Actually, all of them seem pretty nice. Behind me and Pluto, the other members of Chaos' army were joking around and laughing. Mercury seemed to be teasing Vulcan about something, jabbing him in the ribs and on the shoulder. All of a sudden, Vulcan jumped on top of Mercury, tackling him to the ground. Diana just laughed at them, rooting for Vulcan to pound him.

I smiled. They may be god-like and immortal, but they were still teens.

"Hey Annabeth, mind giving me a hand?" Mercury called out, pitching a tent. "I need you to hammer the stakes in while I hold the tent up." I nodded and walked over to him. A few minutes later, the tent was up and secure.

"Thanks," Mercury sighed, while stretching. He tried rolling up the sleeves of his cloak, only for them to come tumbling down again. He groaned in frustration.

"Gods, I hate these stupid things." Mercury turned to the others, who had finished pitching their tents as well. 

"I am not setting up another tent. Any of you guys know when P- I mean, Omega's coming back?" 

I glanced at Mercury suspiciously. He almost called Omega something. Probably his real name. Peter? Paul?

Percy.

What if it's Percy?

I shook my head in frustration. Cool it, Annabeth. You're going paranoid. Percy's gone. Accept it. 

"He's probably going to be back any minute now. All he had to do was drink some nectar and wrap up his arm. Even an idiot could do it." Vulcan said. I laughed, still kinda pissed off at Omega.

"So I guess that means Omega's going to be a while, huh?" They laughed and Diana slung her arm over my shoulders.

"You, my friend, are going to fit in real well with us." She laughed along with the others and finished pitching her tent while I smiled. It's nice to know I can make them laugh. I was still laughing when all of them went stiff.

I frowned. What's wrong?

"So, you think I'm an idiot?" I flinched and turned around, facing an angry Omega.

Schist.

I was about to apologize, when I felt a sudden surge of anger again. I was not going to let Omega make me seem weak. I stood up straighter and crossed my arms across my chest.

"Actually, dumber than an idiot. More like the Minotaur after he's hit his head a couple of times." 

I heard the rest of Chaos' army laugh, while Omega just stood there looking at me. Not wanting to deal with him anymore, I walked away. I looked over my shoulder to see him still watching me.

"Dinner's at 7, by the way" I shouted over my shoulder. "We can talk about war plans after eating."

I started walking back to my cabin, smirking.

I just put the leader of Chaos' army in his place.

And it felt good.
