Chapter 45 ~ Also Threw A Chair

Final chappy

Let's do this.

~<>~

~ Kat's PoV ~

Everything was overwhelming after Steve left.

We were all just standing there, staring at each other. Even after I said hi.

Then, Steve cleared his throat, which caught everyone's attention. "Well, I am going to go find my brother. Do you know where he is?"

"Mansion behind the building." Adam said, almost in a questioning tone.

"Thank you." Steve nodded to us. "Have fun."

Everybody's gaze followed him as he walked to the door, opened it, let Salem go through, and shut the door behind himself.

A few seconds of silence passed.

Vikk finally spoke up. "So that's Steve?"

"Yeah..." Abby said. "He's interesting."

"I suppose we should... probably ask about your adventure?" It was as if Jerome was scared of what our answer would be.

I looked around at my friends. They looked sweaty, hungry, and tired. "I don't think we're in the right shape to explain everything at the moment."

Adam nodded. "I understand. We're caught up on some of the news... we sort of know what you all went through."

I almost laughed.

"What do you want to do first to help your current situation?"

"Shower." Gordon answered immediately. "Cold water. Cold everything. Please."

"Then food." Infinity patted her stomach.

Skye sighed. "Some sleep would be nice."

"We can do that for our returning heroes." Preston smiled, trying to cheer us up.

"You can explain your story to the council tomorrow. Or it can be private, if you wish." Adam stood up.

"It's fine." I shook my head. "The entire council deserves to hear it."

He nodded. "Okay. Let's get you guys feeling all good again."

And that wasn't even the overwhelming part. That happened after we cleaned ourselves up and were fed with a feast.

We were in the elevators going down to the lobby. It was just our group heading to the hotel that we stayed in before the whole trip happened.

"I'm really looking forward to a good day's sleep." Infinity yawned, which made me yawn (and me. 3 times).

"Stop." Jake yawned. "I hate that yawns are contagious."

"But so are smiles." Gordon flashed a creepy looking grin. It faded when Jake gave him a glare.

"Somebody's cranky." I poked Jake's chest. "Is Jake sleepy?"

"Tired." He corrected. "There's a difference."

"How?"

"Sleepy sounds all cute. Tired is bags under the eyes and hatred for the world."

"But you're still cute."

"Get a room." Infinity whispered.

The elevator dinged, and the doors opened to a strange scene.

Behind the secretary's desk was Lydia doing her job. Charlie (!) was on our side of the desk, talking to two other people.

One was a teenager our age. He had his hood up, but a tuft of blond hair with red streaks stood out. He had on sunglasses, and a bow was slung on his back. The other person was a little boy about seven years old. He had brown hair, and light brown eyes. They both wore navy blue hoodies. On the younger boy's shoulder was a black bunny.

At that moment, I realized who the people were.

"Link?" Jake asked.

"Danny?!" Infinity exclaimed.

"Jewel!" I shouted, my arms stretching out.

Everyone turned our way.

"Kat!" Charlie looked shocked. "Oh, and everyone else."

"Hello to you, too." Mastermind muttered as we all walked over to the smaller group.

"Hi everyone!" Danny looked super excited. "Jake, it's been forever! You guys have more friends! Woah, does that guy have a red eye? Why is Kat a ninja now? She looks awesome!"

I expected some big happy reunion, but Jake had to ruin it.

"What are you guys doing here?" He directly asked Link.

"Hey, bro." Link held out a hand, ignoring his question.

Jake stared at it for a second. He grasped it with his own, and they both went in for a bro hug.

"Come here, Jewel." I picked up my pet. She sniffed my arm, trying to figure out who I was. However, she recognized me, and rubbed her head against my bicep. I smiled, and pet her. Then, I turned back to the two boys.

"Again, what are you doing here?" Jake asked after they left go.

He took off his sunglasses, revealing pale green eyes full of worry. They totally didn't match the cool guy composure he tried to keep. "Jake... we had to come here. The survivors."

That last sentence alone made Jake's face pale. "What do you mean."

Link swallowed. "The... the base was attacked. A few weeks ago. Danny and I... we were away. And when we came back... there was fire everywhere. And mobs. They popped out of thin air. Lightning shot from the sky. Our soldiers were trying their best to save the base but..." He paused to take a few breaths. He seemed really shaken up about it. "We had to evacuate who was left. There were so many deaths... half the base didn't make it..."

Jake's expression was stone cold. Then, fury showed in his eyes. Before anyone could do anything, he slammed Link against the wall.

"You were supposed to protect them!" He shouted at Link while the rest of us tried to pry him away. "I trusted you! They all trusted you!"

"I tried my best!" Link shoved him off, and we were able to control Jake. He backed away a few steps, breathing heavily. He put his sunglasses away, took a deep breath, and straightened up. "The council let us have a whole hotel to ourselves on Blocking Road. Hotel Le Craft. Come visit us later and we can all talk. Come on, Danny."

Danny looked at us all, his eyes wide. I felt really bad for the boy; he saw horrific things that a seven year old should not see. Death. Violence. Massacre. Yet he still seemed so cheerful when he saw us. When he saw Jake, who he considered a big brother. Now he saw hulk Jake.

"Danny."

He finally listened to Link, and followed after him out of the building.

"Jake, calm down." Infinity told her brother. He was being restrained by Gordon and Skye.

He jerked their arms away, but stayed where he was. His face was contorted with anger. However, I saw a different expression in there for a microsecond. Pain.

He inhaled and exhaled a few times, then walked to the building entrance.

"Stop!" Abby shouted.

"It's fine." I told her. "I'll go after him."

I found Jake sitting on the curb, his arms crossed on his raised knees. He was staring intently at the ground.

I sat down next to him. Slowly, I said, "Even if he were there, he couldn't have stopped it."

Jake didn't respond, but I could tell he heard me.

"It's okay to feel angry." I continued. "But don't be angry at him."

"I know." He snapped. Then, he caught himself, and said in a softer voice, "I know. I just... I hate that I wasn't there to help. I abandoned everyone. It's all my fault."

"It's not your fault." If anything, it was mine. I went to his base, I got him into all this. Him, Infinity, Gordon, Abby. Everyone.

He finally looked at me. "It's not yours either."

I averted my eyes to the ground. "What do you think would've happened if I didn't leave Charlie's village?"

"Herobrine would've found you. So it's a good thing you left. You wouldn't have found us, we wouldn't have made it to here. We wouldn't have gotten Notch, or Steve, or the prophecy, or the Rebels... We wouldn't be together."

I didn't say anything.

"Come here." Jake wrapped his arm around me. I accepted his embrace gladly, covering his hands with my own.

"I guess we both feel pretty crappy about ourselves." He muttered from above me.

"We can feel bad together. " I whispered.

And we just sat there in public, forgetting everything and everyone else. We were together, and that was all that mattered at that moment.

The next morning, after we ate breakfast, I was standing in front of Notch's mansion.

The others were headed up to the council room to tell our story. But Lydia had stopped me in the lobby and told me that Notch required my appearance. Alone.

I walked down the cobblestone path to the mansion. The yellow flowers surrounding the path were bright and cheerful just like the three story house's colors. They were white clay and quartz, clearly a theme for Notch. There were tens of windows on each floor, and the roof was a glass dome.

When I finally made it to the front, I noticed that one of the windows on the first floor were broken. I shrugged it off, and rang the doorbell. A chorus of noteblocks rang out. A few seconds later, Notch opened the door.

"Hello Kat." He smiled, but it didn't quite reach his tired eyes. "I am glad you are back. Please, come in."

When I walked down the short hallway, the first thing I noticed was the chandelier. It was a giant gold one hanging down from an opening in the middle of the room from the second story. Sea lanterns were attached to it, lightning up the place. The main area was empty except for a giant yellow rug, and two staircases at the other side of the room going up. As we walked toward the stairs, I saw the area on either side branch out to reveal more rooms.

"Nice place." I said. "Not sure if it's you, though."

"What do you mean?" He asked.

"You're all... humble. And this mansion is so elegant."

He chuckled. "Yes. My architect, Grian, went a little overboard trying to impress me. I did give him some ideas, though. He usually uses snow instead of quartz, but I like the way the columns look."

"I noticed your window was broken."

"Aftermath of Steve's visit." He rubbed his head awkwardly. "Also threw a chair. He was not too happy with me."

"I bet. But is he still staying?" I hoped he didn't change his mind.

Notch nodded. "He just plans to keep his distance from me. In fact, he is in the council room with everyone else right now."

"Why aren't we there?" We started to head up the quartz steps.

"I heard you have a huge list of questions for me. I figured we should probably get it over with sooner than later."

"Are you going to answer everything?"

"Most likely. No promises."

"No riddles or anything? Straight answers?"

"Most likely. No promises."

"I'll take it." I sighed. "Hang on, I got to think about everything now."

"You have time. We are going up to the top floor."

We had reached the second floor, which was almost a repeat of the first. Many rooms were on either side, only this time, there was a giant fenced off hole in the floor. It was there so the chandelier could be seen from the bottom floor. On the other side of the room were more stairs.

We climbed up the stairs in silence, and finally reached the top floor. It was a giant work area. There were redstone contraptions, boards with papers pinned to them, crafting tables, and a library in the corner. There was a place for furnaces, enchanting, anvils, chests, and brewery. There was no light except for the natural sunlight through the glass dome ceiling. On either side of the work area was a door that led to more rooms. The side walls were white clay, but behind us and in front of us were all glass.

"My favorite room in the house." Notch said, walking to the other side. "Quiet, and bright."

"It's nice." I agreed.

Notch sat down on one of the chairs offered by the library. "Alright. I am ready."

"I know you're my father." I blurted out. "Tell me all about that."

He exhaled. "Can we save that for later? I'd like to answer some smaller questions before I launch into a monologue."

I shrugged. "As long as you answer it. Okay... let's start in order. The day after I woke up with no memories, I fell into a hole. Stop smiling, it's not funny. I ended up finding a staircase which led me out. Did you put that staircase there?"

"Yes." He was still smiling softly. "I could not have had your story end there."

"Yet you said you were in a different dimension at that time."

"I also mentioned that I was looking down at your adventure. You see, in that dimension, I am able to focus my subconscious and allow myself to latch onto another powerful being, and see all around them. I could not do it with my brothers because they were suppressing me, but I was able to see you. If I focus hard enough, I can even make blocks form. However, I was exhausted after that."

"Well... thank you for that. Okay, when the village was attacked, the priest mentioned dark magic. What is that about?"

"Dark magic." Notch repeated. "Herobrine's speciality. It is his own name for his abilities."

"If the priest used the name, then does that mean he possessed the priest?"

"Or had someone else do it. You said he had purple eyes and controlled black wisps? Seems Enderman-like. Most likely his General."

"Is this dark magic dangerous?"

"He made it up. He thinks that he can use his powers to somehow obtain more."

"Can he?"

Notch shrugged. "Most likely no. But he has been at it for a long time; who knows what he has figured out at this point."

"Does he have special abilities that differ from yours?"

"When we obtained our godly powers, we did have some variety. Me being the eldest, I got the most important part— being able to conjure up new items or mobs."

"What's that all about?" I finally walked over to one of the vacant chairs and sat down. "Are there limitations?"

Notch stared at the ground. "Do you remember when I said no promises about answering all your questions?"

I groaned. "Seriously?"

"There are limitations." He admitted. "But I cannot say why or how."

"What about 'what'?" I tried for another way in.

"Nice try." He chuckled. "Next question."

"How did you obtain your godly powers? As well as your brothers?"

"We were just young, normal people. We were leading normal lives. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary until..." He shook his head as if changing his mind. "No, no I'm sorry. I can't explain. It's not the right time."

"What could be so bad that you can't tell me?"

"I never said it was bad."

"Yet you got nervous." I tilted my head slightly. "You started using contractions."

He raised his eyebrows. "Very perceptive. Impressive. But the fact still remains that the universe just works in a certain way. Some things are better left unsaid."

I huffed. "Fine. Okay, that's fine. So you guys turned into adults, and something happened. You got all these abilities. I'm guessing that the powers you get depend on your age? Like a first come first serve sort of thing?"

"I wish it were not true, but it appears so."

I bit my lip. "So my powers. They're coming from somewhere. It doesn't seem like you're losing any, but Steve is."

He closed his eyes. "I was afraid that would happen. I am not sure about the whole balance in the family. However, I'm assuming that since Herobrine and I use our powers more frequently, Steve is a target. He does not need to use immortality often, therefore he is losing it."

"So he can lose his immortality? He already feels pain from injuries and gets exhausted from physical labor. Will he be able to die of old age soon?"

"I don't know." Notch looked slightly frustrated. "I wish I knew, but I do not. I also do not know if you can somehow change the way things are working. How much of the powers you are getting. What did you say you have?"

"I can breathe underwater, heal quicker, and run faster. That's it so far."

He nodded. "Standard things."

"How old are you guys anyway?" I asked before I could forget.

"I am around 176. Herobrine is two years younger than me, Steve one year younger than him."

"176?" My eyes widened. "Dude."

"I know." He laughed. "I'm old. I stopped counting past one hundred, so it's just an estimate. Luckily immortality makes me any age I want to be. I prefer middle age. It's the easiest to control."

"Can you turn into a baby?"

"That would take hours of concentration. And I wouldn't be able to hold it very long."

I tried to imagine a teenage Notch. I almost laughed at the thought.

"Okay." I clapped my hands once. "That's a lot of my questions answered. Now let's move onto the family tree. Why didn't you tell me before? Who is my mother? How did this all happen?"

Notch looked to the left. He sighed, and stood up. He started walking away. "What did Steve tell you?"

I stood up as well. "That sixteen years ago, you and Herobrine had an argument. He must've gotten angry that you fell for someone. That you had a daughter."

"Come here." He gestured to me when he was by the window.

I walked over. "What is it?"

"Herobrine and I did have a fallout, yes. But I'm afraid that the reason you're thinking of is incorrect."

"Then what is it?" I frowned.

"Kat." Notch looked out the window. "Have you ever moved your hair?"

"My what?"

"Your hair." He pointed to his forehead. "It covers your right eye. Have you ever moved it?"

I swallowed. Now that he mentioned it, it was weird. Not even in the water did my hair over my face move. Not when I ran or jumped from high places either (which sadly happened a lot). "No. But what does that—"

"Move it." His eyes glanced downward at the ground far below.

I blinked, but did as he asked. I moved my hair to the side so he could see my whole face. "Okay?"

Notch looked at me, and inhaled sharply. He walked over to a group of chests, and opened one. He pulled something out— a handheld mirror. "Look at your reflection."

Still confused, I grabbed the handle, my other hand still holding back my hair.

As I looked at my reflection, the blood drained from my face.

The mirror slipped from my grasp, and fell to the floor. It shattered on the Quartz, but I barely heard the sound.

"The prophecy..." Notch cleared his throat. "It never stated which god is your parent."

I tried to breathe, but it was difficult. My hands were shaking from what I saw.

My left eye was still purple, as it normally should be.

My right eye, however, was a glowing white.

Herobrine was my father.

This was a test
