Chapter 22 ~ Dun Dun Dun!

Okay, sorry this update is late, I had a lot going on the past week (a few things being my birthday on the 26th, and my birthday party). This was also a tough part to write, considering it's kinda boring.

Here's Gordon tho

But anyways, this chapter is dedicated to Elipticaly . Couldn't have completed it today without you :)

~<>~

Some days are the best. You feel so great, like you could do anything. Like you are on top of the world, high up and not coming back down. Nobody could ever bring you down.

And some days are horrible. You feel terrible, and nothing could make you feel great again. Like you just want to crawl into a hole and lay there in a ball. Nothing could cheer you up.

Usually these days balance out. You can't feel like a day is perfect unless you compare it to an imperfect one. You need to have the bad days because life can't be always perfect. But that just makes the good days seem even better.

Not only does this apply to days, it applies to lives, objects, people, decisions. Anything in life. Everything in life.

But in this case, I didn't see how something could make this better. I didn't see how someone or something could possibly tip the scale. Herobrine was already winning, but adding another win just made it worse.

How were we supposed to do this? I never really grasped the idea. We were just a bunch of kids, a god that was a recluse for 16 years, some council members, and an "army" that I didn't even see yet.

I didn't speak for the rest of the day.

Neither did the others, although there was the occasional sentence that needed to be said, whether it was saying 'excuse me', or 'make sure you don't step on that sponge'.

We walked the streets of the city in despair and silence. Not many people were on the streets, they were at this giant stadium that the Ballistic Builders created. It was right on the outskirts of Bladville, built over the water. Since it was still morning, and we slept in late so we immediately went to the council, we didn't get a good look at it. But from what I heard before, the second day of the festival was a bunch of competitions, building, redstone, pvp, and more. Didn't seem very exciting at the moment.

When we got to the hall, Skye stopped us before we could go inside our rooms.

"Should... we talk about this?" He asked everyone awkwardly.

No one gave him a real answer, just looked at the walls or ground, or shrugged, or bit their lip.

I shook my head. "We know what happened. We failed. And we have an idea what's going to happen. Herobrine will turn this place into a boot camp, and we'll go back to Notch and tell him we let him down."

That just left it even more awkward.

"Maybe we can—"

"Gordon." Abby cut him off sharply. He stopped talking immediately.

"Go and relax guys." Jake said solemnly. "Later we'll find a way to contact Notch, and figure out a plan."

I almost laughed. Relaxing was going to be a challenge. And I probably could contact Notch. I mean, I'm part god, so I should probably have some kind of power in that. I could probably sleep and visit him in a dream or something. Or talk to him telepathically. The whole thing seemed confusing, actually. I wondered how he visited me.

Nevertheless, I didn't want to see Notch even if I could have. I couldn't look him in the eye and tell him we failed. He, the council, the Army of Notch (or whatever it was called), they all counted on us. And my friends counted on me.

The genders went their separate ways. Gabriel barked us a hello, and Infinity picked him up. I sat down at the table in the corner of the main room. I realized we never really used it.

The other two girls looked at me with sincere faces. Then, they sat down on the couch and turned on the tv. I didn't pay attention to the moving screen.

I let out a small and insignificant sigh, and looked through my inventory. 3 diamonds, my enchanted sword, a few nuggets, and the book of budder. Strangely, I realized I didn't even have a bow. But I guess I haven't read the whole book yet.

I grabbed the book and started to read.

~ Mastermind's PoV ~

While the other guys were lounging around with straight faces, I was leaning against the wall by the door. I was unloading and reloading my cannon. It was quite easy, since I've been used to it for so long. As well as being used to my eye, and practically half of my body being metal. The need to eat, or the feelings of coolness and heat were long gone. If I lost my memories, I could've been fooled that I was like this at birth.

But I did still have my memories. Unfortunately. I always wish to forget the terrible time of how I became a cyborg.

I would've shuddered if I had the capability.

I haven't told anyone about what happened. And I never planned on it before. I never thought that anyone would understand. That people would probably think that I was a monster.

Not that I would've cared. I didn't care what other people thought. Yes, I do have the capability to care. I'm not completely heartless. But I just ignored the insults and moved on.

But at the moment... I don't know. I guess I just needed to feel the satisfaction of telling someone.

I traded out my cannon for my regular hand. "I'm going out, guys."

"You sure?" Jake asked.

Skye grunted. "Don't die."

"I'm sure. And thanks for the advice." I opened the door and shut it behind me.

I walked across the hallway and knocked on the girls door.

"Come in." One of them called.

I opened the door, but stayed in the doorway, leaning against the frame. Infinity and Abby were sitting on the couch watching tv, with Gabriel in between them, and Kat was at the table in the back reading a book.

"Can I talk to Kat?" Then, I added, "Alone."

Kat shrugged from the corner and closed her book. She got up and put the book in her inventory. As she walked over, Infinity said loudly, "Be careful. She's Jake's girl."

I rolled my eyes. "Yes ma'am."

I made way for Kat to come through, and shut the door behind us.

"What's up?" She asked halfheartedly.

I looked down the hall. I didn't want anyone to overhear. "Let's talk about this outside."

~<>~

"So what did you want to talk about?" Kat said, pressing her back against the hotel wall.

Luckily most people were at the stadium. Only a few people walked on the street.

I swallowed and rested my left shoulder on the wall, next to her. "I need to talk to someone about this. And since you can relate to me the most about this, it's gonna be you."

She raised an eyebrow, and crossed her arms to get comfy. "I'm not cyborg, but I'll do my best."

I chuckled. "That's what I wanted to talk about. My origin story."

"Dun dun dun!" She widened her eyes.

I stared at her.

She shrugged. "Sounded intense and dramatic, so I provided the sound effects. But you're seriously going to tell me?" As I nodded, she tilted her head. "I though you were going to only tell people if you were dying."

"We're all technically dying." I pointed out. "Do you want to hear it or not?"

"Sure." She nodded.

"Okay." I cleared my throat. "Here it goes. So I lived in a city named Novincia." I turned to Kat. "You know that city?"

She shook her head no.

"It's the third largest city, located south of Notch city. It's really mostly peaceful. Until one night." I stared at the street.

"You don't have to tell me if it's too hard." Kat said with a sympathetic look.

"No, it's fine. One dark and crisp night, about 11 years ago when I was 5, it was attacked. Within hours, hundreds of different mobs were clashing with men and women. And my dad," I chuckled. "Dester. He was a brave man and one of Novincia's greatest warriors. He was in charge of the border guard that night, and fought along everyone else. But then, he decided to take on the leader of the mob army."

"Who?" Kat asked, puzzled.

"The mutant zombie."

She blinked, frowning. "Weird. Why'd Herobrine send one of his commanders to destroy a city?"

"I don't know." I admitted. "But I will find out."

"I know you will. Continue."

"So anyways. My dad challenged the mutant zombie, and fought him. Meanwhile, in our house, my mom and I were in the corner cowering with fear (keep in mind that I was about 5 when this happened). All of a sudden, the door broke down and zombies came in, ready to devour us. My dad must've saw we were in danger, because the next thing I knew, he bursted through the window, glass shards spraying everywhere. He fought off the zombies, shouting to my mom, 'Lefera, my wife, run, and don't look back!' My mom grabbed me and ran out the door. I ignored his words and looked back. But I wish I hadn't. I wish I took his advice."

Kat looked a little unsure, but she asked, "What happened?"

It took a few seconds to respond. "The, the mutant zombie destroyed a wall, climbed into our house, and... stabbed my dad in the chest."

She raised a hand to her mouth, even though it was still covered by the cloth. "Oh my gods... Mastermind..."

"And I know what you're thinking... No I don't know why the mutant zombie had a sword back then."

"I wasn't thinking about that." She shook her head.

(Kat's PoV: I was so thinking about that.)

"Yeah... okay." I read her heartbeat and could tell she was lying. Oh well though. "Anyways, my mom and I ran away into the woods. We continued on for what seemed like forever. Finally, we decided to take a rest. We both had tears streaming down our faces, and were breathing heavily. Then... my mom, she looked behind me with her eyes wide. She pushed past me and tackled the creeper that was sneaking up on us. In horror, I watched it explode. But since I didn't react fast enough, I was too close to the explosion and was engulfed in it at well. Both my parents... gone in less than 10 minutes apart."

"Mastermind..."

I avoided her gaze and looked up at the park in front of us. So peaceful, so natural. "I shouldn't have lived. But I guess Notch looked down on me and thought I deserved a chance. I blacked out, but Mitch told me what happened." I swallowed again. "He, Jerome, and a large group of army members came to help the city, but it was too late. All the mobs were either dead or they left, and many people were deceased or injured. Half the city was destroyed.

"Mitch decided to go look in the woods for any signs of survivors. And he did find a survivor somehow. He found a little boy next to an explosion. The boy was missing an arm, a leg, half his torso, and one side of his face was mangled." Kat grimaced at the thought when I explained the gruesome sight. "Mitch somehow found a heartbeat though. He called a few guys over, and they took him to the city. With the help of Dr. Trayaurus and a few others, I was recreated. When I finally regained consciousness, I was half metal."

"Wow..." Kat whispered.

"Even though Mitch was a teenager, he took care of me. I was his responsibly. He trained me to become a great warrior. And along the way, I developed an interest in redstone." I huffed in amusement. "Whether it was because I became part redstone, I don't know. But I did train a bit with Sethbling as well."

"Gordon would be jealous." Kat chuckled. Then, her face expression became upset. "Mastermind, I never knew about what you went through."

"I never really told anyone. Only Mitch, and part of the council know."

"I feel honored that you'd share it with me." She added, "and we are going to avenge your parents. I promise you."

I smiled. "I know we will. But anyways, about a month ago, I was sent on a mission by Mitch—" She opened her mouth to speak. "— and no, I will not tell you what it was. Anyways, I was in the plains, wandering around, when I saw someone. A girl with a purple hoodie, and different colored highlights in her hair. She was chasing a chicken. And she fell into a little hole in the ground."

Kat inhaled quickly.

"I was going to go rescue her, but I knew I had to get back to Mitch. Plus I assumed she had something to build up with."

"Well I didn't." Kat crossed her arms again and stuck her tongue out.

I chuckled. "But can you imagine how your story would've changed if I met you? I probably would've taken you to Notch City. You wouldn't have met Charlie, or gotten to Jake's base and met all of them."

She pursed her lips and looked to the side. "True. Guess it was a good thing you didn't want to help."

"Yep. So maybe I shouldn't help you at all from now on."

"Thanks man."

Well this chapter was a little depressing.

Now we finally know Mastermind's origin :0 but did he leave some parts out? Will we ever find out if he did?

Next chapter is going to be a game changer though. From now on, things are going to be very interesting.

Question: If you could have any other mob be a mutant mob (besides the regular mutant mobs), what would it be? Nice mobs allowed.

Rock on, my little rebels.
