Chapter 17 ~ Am I A Unicorn?

DON'T WORRY THIS WASN'T ACCIDENTALLY PUBLISHED LIKE I DID BEFORE.

This is Kat at the very beginning.

Just thought it would be cool to think about how far they've come.

But just kidding this isn't THE chapter. The next chapter is THE chapter because I'm a weenie. Sorry

"DID YOU GUYS KI—"

Jake shoved his hand temporarily in Infinity's face to stop her from talking.

I chuckled and continued walking to my bed and sat down.

"Bleh." Infinity shook her head.

"You... um..." Gordon started, talking to me.

"I'm fine." I said. "All good."

"Good work." Mastermind nudged Jake. Jake nudged him back with an emotionless face.

"I only came back for food." I added, with a serious expression. "I really hate you all."

"Hate you too." Abby winked.

We all laughed, and got up.

When we finally got to the large dining room, we all sat down. There were probably ten tables, with a few occupied. Since we had more people than a table fits, we pushed two together to make a giant one.

As was said before, the food was expensive. But it was good. We all ordered the least expensive offers on the menu, and chatted. Mostly about the festival. Abby was the one to talk the most, going on and on about the Ballistic Builders.

After lunch, we went around the city again. Nothing really special happened, but we did see Damen and Marcus doing another rigged fight. Even though we stayed far away, I could tell from the other side of the street that Marcus had a black eye. Whether it was a punch gone wrong, or it was fake. or something else, I didn't know.

I wanted to get as close as the back of the island, where the military was, as much as possible. But Mastermind advised against it.

"There's a huge wall there for one, and two, it's really nothing special." He explained.

"Have you seen it?" I asked.

He nodded. "Once, when Mitch and a few other members of the council had to visit it a few months ago. He brought me as well. Just a bunch of tents and archery ranges."

"Oh."

Then we went back for dinner. Again, just another boring meal. I was pretty sure we were getting on the hotel's nerves, because they kept having to move the tables back.

Finally, we went back up to our room (the girls' room) and all sat down, talking about random things. Favorite mob, parkour, funniest moments, that stuff.

Now we continue to the good part of the chapter (not breaking the fourth wall, but that's still fun), sleep.

We went to bed earlier, since we wanted to get a good night's rest for the first day of the festival tomorrow. I wasn't sure why we couldn't get all three days off, but I guess we shouldn't be picky.

As soon as my head hit the pillow, I was asleep completely, which was weird. But then, my dream happened.

I surrounded by white, except a shiny wooden floor. There was a couch, a chair, and a table (made of two upside down stairs) in between them.

I looked behind me to see if there was anything else. Nothing.

"Hello Kat. Apple?"

I jerked my head back. Notch was sitting on the chair, holding an apple in his hand.

"Nah, I'm good." I said, walking over to the couch. I sat down in front of Notch. "What's up?"

He shrugged. "Suit yourself." The apple vanished. "I came here to receive an update, and to warn you."

A warning? And why'd he need an update? "Can't you, like, use super god powers to see things?"

"No, that only worked in the dimension I was in. From here, I don't have that power."

"Oh."

I explained to him what happened so far. The fight on the train, our new plan, the two meetings with the council.

"So Jane delayed the meeting so we have the first day of the festival off." I finished.

"Hmmm..." He looked off to the side. "Why would he send his General if..." He trailed off.

"What?" I asked.

Notch looked at me. "Kat, I won't sugarcoat this. This is more dangerous than I thought."

"Thanks for not sugarcoating it." I said sarcastically.

"I'd get you all out of there if I could, but we need to finish this." Notch said. He looked at me, his expression serious. "Kat, don't trust anyone. Not this Jane, not Ivan, not Shane, no one. Only trust the people in your group."

"Is that the warning you wanted to tell me?" I asked.

He shook his head. "The warning is this: have you noticed that you haven't had many nightmares since I've been back?"

"Yeah." I frowned. "That was you? If it was, thank you."

He chuckled. "Yes, I've been able to keep them at bay. But... I won't be able to do it anymore."

"But why doe."

"I need to focus my power somewhere else. Plus," Notch leaned closer. "I think you can learn from them."

"What do you mean?" I was confused.

"I mean exactly what I said. I need you to analyze them, I really think they can help."

I was still confused. "Okay."

Now, it was my turn. "Can I ask you a few questions?" I asked.

He tilted his head. "Sure."

"Why did you need to leave 16 years ago?"

He thought for a second. "Because you were born. No offense."

"Ouch. Okay offense definitely taken. Why?"

He hesitated. "You do know that you're special, right?"

Oh, I forgot to tell him about my water breathing discovery. "Yeah, um, about that. I can breathe underwater."

"Yeah." He rubbed the back of his head. "Yeah, that's a thing."

"I can tell. How... How can I do that?"

"Because you're special."

"Way to be specific."

"You're not like other human beings. You're something more." He said it slowly and carefully.

"Like... a god?" I asked, butterflies in my stomach.

"No." He shook your head. "Not a god."

"What else is there? Am I a unicorn?" That would honestly be pretty sweet if I was.

Notch chuckled again. "You aren't a unicorn. But Kat, I will tell you something. You are somewhere in between."

"In between a unicorn and pegasus?"

"What?" Notch said surprised. He frowned. "No. In between a human and a god."

I blinked once. Twice. "Seriously?"

"Seriously."

"As serious as Santa Claus?"

Woah. Turned back time right there.

"Er, yes."

I didn't know what that meant. I was part god? Or was I something else, and he was just comparing.

"But that's really all I should say." Notch added.

"So I shouldn't really bother asking anymore questions." I looked down.

"...No. I'm sorry." He winced slightly, looking away again.

Well this wasn't going the way I had hoped.

"Its my fault. It's just that I don't want to spoil anything for the book too soon." The author said out loud to herself.

"What about my parents." I blurted.

Notch jerked his head toward me. "Your parents?"

"My family. Who are they? Where are they? Are they really involved in any of this?"

"Your family." Notch said, more certain on the subject. "Right. I, um... Your family is safe for now. You don't have to worry about them. They are involved in this, but they're safe."

"For now." I noted. "And you can't tell me who they are?"

"No."

"Come on." I leaned back and covered my face with my hands.

"The only reason I'm not telling you these things is because I don't want you to get hurt." He said sincerely. "You'll know when the time is right."

Ugh. That's so cliché.

"I must go." Notch said. "I can protect you tonight, but from now on you have to deal with the nightmares."

"Fiiiiiine." I sighed.

"Goodbye." He tried for a smile.

I flicked my wrist once for a quick wave as a goodbye. Then, everything disappeared.

I'm like really sorry this chapter is so short I've been going through a writers block (hehe block) because of some things and I was going to have this chapter be much longer but I didn't want you all to wait any longer.

I'll try my best to update quickly, but really no promises.

Question: This isn't a question. I just want you guys to think about a few things in your head.

-Why did Notch leave?
-What is Kat?
-What is Notch directing his power to?
-Will I actually get good?

Rock on, my little rebels.
