Part 20
His voice rang serious. His carefree attitude has now seemed lost. It is as if he is a different person, a whole new personality in the body of my dad. From this, a rock started to grow in my throat, preventing me from breathing, and with every second, that seemed like an eternity, of this person in my dad's body staring at me, the lump grew.
"W-What is it?" I questioned, trying to seem as calm as possible. I realized I had failed the second I said it because my voice was as squeaky as a starving mouse whining for food. He stared at me for a second before saying, "I know today has been quite a day for all of us," he paused for a second "but taking an unstable person to the hospital, when the ambulance was coming, and the driving. You don't even have a license. I'm not going to let this slide, what you did was extremely dangerous."
"Ok," I responded. I knew there was going to be some consequences, so I kind of expected it.
"Your mom and I will discuss your punishment when we get home. In the mean time, I want your phone." I handed him my dead phone, and he slid it in his back pocket.
"Uh," Dr. Thomas started, "you can't go home." He looked at us with worry filled eyes.
"And why is that?" My mom said as she started to lean to one side with her hands placed on her hips.
"No one is suppose to know about this, about Anne, about any of us, and it's currently all over the news!"
"Where can we go if we can't go home?" My dad asked, slowly filling his voice with anger. We can't even go home now. We have nowhere to go.
Everyone in the group is quiet now. Mom and Dad seem to have rage boiling inside them, trepidation seems to grow in Dr. Thomas, and as for me, remorse grows. Mom and Dad continued turning their attention to me, then each other, contemplating on what to do I assume.
"Um, I can try getting you to the base if you want, you guys can settle down there until we find out what to do." Dr. Thomas interrupted.
"Base?" I questioned.
"Where everyone meets up and goes for emergencies. Well, at least everyone who is like us." Dr. Thomas started, "Which I think they all are there now."
"Then let's go." My dad butted in.
"Wait, are we going to have time to go home and get our stuff?" Mom questioned.
"Mrs. Duncan," Dr. Thomas started, "with how much Anne was on the news, everyone is going to be at your house. We have to keep you guys, especially Anne, out of the public eye. We can't do that with everyone swarming your home." Mom was about to say something in response, but decided not to at the last second.
"How far away are we from the base even?" I asked.
"Less than thirty minutes." Dr. Thomas replied
"Then let's go." My dad said to us, once again, while starting to leave. We all started to follow my dad out to the front and with every step closer I could hear the t.v. out in the waiting room play. I couldn't make seance of it at first, but as I got closer, I could hear a news anchor covering a story. I wasn't paying much attention to it, until I heard that dreaded sound. The shots of a gun echoing trough the room. I stopped in my tracks and turned my attention towards the t.v. All I see was the convict standing there with terror smeared across his face, staring at me, unaffected by the three holes in my body. The video was shaky, with kids screaming in the background, but all I could focus on was me, walking towards the criminal. I hadn't realized my parents were standing next to me at the time. Mom was crying, and Dad was dumbfounded.
My attention was stolen when someone in the room yelled, "Oh my God!" It was a teenage boy, about my age sitting in a chair, pointing at me. Look of panic engulfs his face. "It's that girl on the news!" Everyone begins to stare at me, then the t.v. My face starts to heat up, and my heart starts to race. My body is frozen, there is no where for me to escape all these eyes. All I could hear were the murmurs of the waiting room, discussing if I was the girl or not, and my parents trying to find a way out of this situation. Finally, Dr.Thomas started pushing us out the doors, as everyone tried to determine if I was that girl.
As he pushed us out of the hospital, he said,"Come on, we need to get you out of here."
