Chapter twelve
~Gabriel's POV~
Earlier that morning:
Humming an old, Elvis song under my breath I mixed flour, sugar and some eggs, to help with the stickiness, in three huge pots.
Luke stared at me warily, an expression that looked rather strange on his face since it was usually us who watched him with care and fear.
"What is it you are trying to do again, Gabe man?" he asked me for the fifth time.
This time I only half ignored him, "This is a fucking intervention, Luke." I told him dramatically.
"Yeah?" he asked, still sounding wary.
I nodded at him before taking one last look at my work and turning to him.
"And you, my friend, are going to help me on this." I told him with a smirk.
He crossed his arms over his chest, "Or what?" he asked with a cocked eyebrow and an arrogant smirk that I knew wouldn't take a lot to wipe away.
My own smirk widened and I raised my hand, allowing a small ball of flames to form on its palm, "Or I am fucking burning those chocolate chips pancakes of yours."
Luke's eyes widened before narrowing on me, "It will be like that, uh?"
I nodded at him.
Yeah, fuck, I knew I was setting myself up for a world of pain caused by infinite pranks, but I couldn't stand Mr. B's kitchen anymore.
Hell, actually I couldn't stand his whole house!
It had so much unexplored potential!
But the kitchen would do, for now.
Wait until I got to his bedroom, and his closet.
Luke started a small whirlwind and soon the kitchen was completely covered in my mixture which I knew would take a lot of water and soap to clean if Mr. B chose to be stubborn and punish us for our mess.
Which was a definite possibility.
Ignoring that in favor of daydreaming about all the changes I wanted to do here I felt in the back of my mind when Sang returned to the house.
Luke and I had woken up the moment she left the house in the middle of the night and had made sure to keep tabs on her to make sure she was okay.
Feeling tired after a sleepless night I didn't notice the vengeful glint in Luke's eyes or I would have started to worry.
When Mr. B and Sang arrived at the kitchen, she already was aware of what we had done and I immediately hid my smug grin.
"Clean this up. Now." Mr. B commands.
Well, shit!
~Luke's POV~
I put another bite of chocolate chip pancakes in my mouth and almost moaned as the sweet taste exploded in my mouth.
Sugar was my vice.
While I ate I daydreamed of ways to get back at Gabe for threatening my favorite fix.
Victor's voice brought me out of my head and I focused in him.
"Princess? There were a few things that I needed to take care of outside today. Do you think it's safe to go out?" he questioned.
I perked up at the possibility of going out. I was already feeling a little bored of staying home.
"Now that you mention, I might need to go by the dinner today too." North added.
"And I need to go to a furniture store." Gabe said and North glared over at him and me, remembering the mess we had made that morning and that Kota had been forced to clean up since none of us were able to remove the flour and eggs mixture from the cupboards.
Sang looked pensive for a minute, biting her lower lip in a way that made me want to offer to bit her lower lip for her. "It should be alright. Marie is not in town, so you boys should be safe. Just try to go in pairs or in a group, and make sure that Luke, Gabriel, North or Mr. Blackbourne are a member of said group."
We all agreed readily and Kota began who would go where and with whom.
Soon after we were all walking out the front door, North taking the front as he stomped down the driveway in the direction of his jeep.
As he made his way down the front yard, walking over the grass, something happened.
I squinted, as if that would help me believe what I was seeing.
Were those... daisies?
Yup. Pretty sure that is the kind of flowers that were springing up beneath his feet as he stomped around.
I elbowed Gabe who stood beside me, completely distracted as he scrolled through different designs for Mr. B's kitchen on his phone.
He lifted his head to send an annoyed glance at me before turning to where I was indicating and gapped.
Silas had come to stand at the other side of me and I saw his smirk as he stared at his childhood friend.
The urge to giggle filled me and I let go, catching North's attention.
He turned to us with a typical frown on his face, "Aren't you all coming?"
Sang and the rest of my brothers were all behind me and by the rare silence that was going on I was sure they had already taken notice of North's... new ability.
When he caught up with what was happening the frown disappeared and his mouth fell open, eyes wide while he stared at the pathway made up of daisies leading from the house to where he stood in the middle of the front yard.
Sang stepped up beside me, a curious expression on her face. "I don't know why you are all so shocked." she said in a soft, caressing voice. "I always thought he had such a nurturing nature."
I glanced back to my usually gruff brother and saw an odd look in his eyes before he smiled an unusually evil smile at me.
North walked with purpose to the side of the house and disappeared around the corner.
Curious, I followed after him only to find my brother standing facing the outside walls of Mr. B's home with a frown of concentration on his face while he stared at the ground.
I thought he was glaring at the grass when a small stalk began to grown from the ground, leaves taking form as the plant grew and grew until I figure what it was.
Tomatoes.
I scrunched my nose in distaste.
Soon after came the onions, peppers, pumpkins and radish.
As he added each new vegetable I felt my horror growing, my palms began to sweat and my stomach was turning.
I hated vegetables with a vengeance.
The others observed silently, with expressions of shock and amusement on their faces as my brother went on with his devious punishment.
"Oh my God," I broke when he added the eggplant. I freaking hate eggplant! "Sang? Cupcake! Please, make him stop!" I begged her, my eyes wide in panic as North kept adding to his vegetable garden.
She just giggled at me and shook her head, the betrayer!
Gabriel and Dr. Green were openly laughing now while the others smirked.
Those little bastards, they were going to pay for this betrayal.
Running back to the house I grabbed a broom and ran back out. Reaching North's garden I began waking his plants in a desperate attempt at stopping their growth and saving my own life.
I just knew those evil things would become alive during the night, grown to unholy heights and try to kill me while I slept.
North turned a baleful glare at me and with a growled command from him roots sprang up from the ground, grabbing my arms and legs, keeping me away while he fixed his evil garden and grew a fence made of stinging needle and cactus around it.
I whined at him but he just growled back at me, "Shut up, Lucian! You need to eat your damn vegetables, and these are organic, which is much healthier than that crap we get at the grocery store."
By then Gabe had already fallen to the ground with his laughing, and most of the others were laughing too.
North growled another command to the roots and they carried me to the jeep, throwing me inside and slamming the door shut behind me before disappearing underground once more.
The others followed, getting into their various vehicles while I pouted at the backseat of North's jeep as Silas got shotgun and North the driver side.
~Sang's POV~
As some of the boys left in their cars I stood in the driveway, waiting for Mr. Blackbourne to bring his car out of the garage.
Sean stood to my right, a goofy smile on his face as he stared at me, his hands on his pockets.
I raised an eyebrow at him, "What?" was there something in my face?
His smile widened, "Have I told you how beautiful I think you are Pookie?" he asked me causing a blush to rise to my cheeks and my eyes to widen.
"Huh." Oh, how very articulate, Sang!
His smile softened, as did his green eyes that gazed down at me with such a sweet expression that I was left speechless.
I didn't know what to do when a boy stared at me like that, my cat urged me to grab him by the lapels of his purple shirt and plant a kiss on his mouth but I didn't have the courage.
I gulped and shook my head in answer to his question.
He stepped closer to me, that smile of his turning mischievous and just as he opened his mouth to say something else to make me blush Mr. Blackbourne came out of the garage on his grey BMW.
Feeling flustered I rushed over to the car, but Sean still reached it before me, opening the front passenger door and signaling for me to get inside.
I smiled at him in thanks, feeling how my lips stretched awkwardly, more a grimace than a smile, and got in.
Mr. Blackbourne gazed at me sideways, sensing my discomfort and turned on the radio, selecting a classical music station.
I felt my muscles relax at the familiar song and shot his a quick smile, receiving one in return.
Mr. Blackbourne' smiles were always so small that one could barely notice them if they weren't paying attention properly.
It made me want to focus all the more on his face, studying his expressions, his reactions, his emotions.
As we were leaving the neighborhood I caught sight of a boy, one of the neighbors, standing in front of his house, cellphone pointed to Mr. Blackbourne's driveway where he'd no doubt seen North using his powers.
His expression was shocked and I reacted quickly, sending a small flicker of wind into his direction, causing the cellphone to drop to the ground and break.
A small spark of electricity ensured the evil object wouldn't work anymore.
Those things had really been made by the devil. Maybe I should destroy them all...
~Kota's POV~
We spent a good part of the morning and well into the afternoon shopping with Gabriel before me and guys finally managed to drag him out of the stores and back into the car.
And I mean literally drag him.
He wasn't stopping until he was satisfied he had everything perfect for Mr. Blackbourne's kitchen.
He'd also left several items reserved for future purchase.
God help Mr. B.
Huffing I glanced out my window watching the houses we drove past. Victor was the one driving since we'd left in his BMW.
Gabe and Nate were bickering in the back seat and I felt the principles of a headache coming.
Things were changing fast and I had the sneaking suspicion that the decision which should be made by weeks end had already been made by most of my brothers.
Also, the way they began to behave so differently after Sang bit them was still bothering me, especially where it came to Mr. Blackbourne who had definitely mellowed.
There were so many questions that remained unanswered and I didn't like that one bit.
We needed a family meeting, soon.
I needed to know how everyone was feeling about all the changes going on, if anyone had any questions or answers to what was going on and if we should professional help to get through these life changing events.
Dr. Green would know the answer to that.
Also, we needed to begin to help Sang adapt to our time. So far all that she did was telling us about her past and teach us about magic.
It was time to do our part.
Maybe we should take her out, to see the city or something like that.
Soon we reached a wooded area and Victor turned the car to go into the park, finding a parking spot next to a cherry red pickup truck.
We got out of the car and Vic and Nate went off in search of our academy contact.
Someone had asked Victor for a favor and they were meeting in the park to discuss details.
Turning to Gabriel we shared a look, silently deciding we might as well take a walk ourselves.
Turning the other way we began walking down a path, Gabe keeping well away from low branches and shrubs, afraid of spiders that might be in them.
I walked ahead of him, my hands in my pockets as I took in the clean air in park, so different than the one in the city.
A rustling sound coming from a distant shrub attracted my attention and I perked up.
Taking a step in the direction of the noise I watched the shrub carefully as it swayed from side to side.
"Oy, Kota. What is going on?" Gabe asked from behind me.
I had no idea but I wanted to find out, my curious nature getting the better of me.
"It looks like there is an animal in that shrub." I told him quietly.
"And shouldn't we be slowly backing away from it by now?" he asked me sounding slightly exasperated.
I shrugged, "I don't think it is anything dangerous, this park is usually well occupied in the summer with parents and children around."
Gabriel just grunted.
He might have protested, but he'd come after me as I approached the mysterious shrub and I couldn't help but smile.
That is what family was for.
As were approaching the shrub a small growl sounded and we froze.
Whatever was hiding in the plant didn't want us to get any closer.
Pushing my glasses up in my face I considered what to do for a moment before crouching on the ground, hopping to appear non-threatening.
"Hey, there." I said softly, "we are not going to hurt you."
Another growl sounded from the plant and Gabriel grabbed my arm, ready to pull me up and away if need be.
"We only want to be friends" I murmured as I did with Max sometimes.
Thinking of Max made miss him.
The next growl sounded softer, quieter, and I took that as a good sign.
"Come out so we can meet you." I coached quietly.
The shrub twitched but this time there was no growl.
I thought for a moment and made a decision.
Gathering that ball of power that I felt growing in me I focused and created a small ball of water in the palm of my hand.
Stretching my hand out in offering I said, "Here, are you thirsty?"
A black muzzle appeared, nose twitching as it inhaled the air.
Soon a head covered in black fur followed and we could both see that it was a pup with shaggy black fur and dark eyes.
"Hello." I greeted quietly while keeping my body loose and still.
"Man, poor thing is fucking ugly." Gabe said with his usual tact.
The dog growled at him, its dark eyes clearly glaring over my shoulder at Gabriel.
I sensed more than see Gabriel lifting his hands in an "I come in peace" gesture. "Sorry, sorry, but it's the truth. You need a haircut."
I tried not to laugh while the dog glared at Gabriel.
"Hey," I called, trying to distract the pup from eating my friend "Do you want some water?"
The pup turned its dark eyes to me and I felt a shiver run down my spine before it bent its head and sipped a bit of the water I offered.
Once it was done I smiled at the dog and presented myself, "My name is Kota."
The dog cocked its head to side, looking confused before yipping twice at us.
I stood up from my crouched position.
"What are you going to do now?" Gabriel asked me and I turned to see he had his hands on his hips as if he were posing for a photo.
I shrugged, "Do you think Sang likes dogs?" I asked him and he just smirked, oddly amused.
"Why don't you ask her?" he flippantly asked me and I instantly felt wary but nodded.
Snapping my fingers I waited to see if the pup would understand what I wanted and was only a bit surprised when it came to my side as if already trained.
Some dogs were smarter than others, of course.
We walked back to the car and found Nathan and Vic already there waiting, Nate having taken the front seat this time around.
Gabriel got into the backseat and I helped the pup enter the car before entering myself.
"How did things go?" I asked Victor as soon as I had put on my seat belt.
"Fine. He agreed to the terms we had stipulated." Vic said, "Is that a pup you have back there?" he asked.
"Yes. Gabe and I found him in the park. I am thinking Sang might like a pet." I said to them as Victor pulled out of the parking spot.
"Do you think she likes animals?" Nate asked, turning on his seat to look at the pup whom was lying on the floor of the car, head propped on his paws, ears perked up as he listened intently to us.
"I don't know." I told him with a shrug, "If she doesn't we will just have to find another owner for him. I didn't want to leave him here." I said.
"He looked a bit wild, all growly and shit. Kinda like North now that I think about it." Gabe said from beside me, a smirk on his face, and the dog growled at him.
Nathan snorted while Victor and I laughed.
Yeah, the pup did seem to have North's temperament.
"I hope it don't tries to eat Mr. B's cat. Considering how he is been acting around that pussycat I think he just might kill us." Nate said with a laugh.
Gabriel nodded with a solemn expression on his face, but his blue eyes betrayed his mirth.
"Oh yeah. Can't let the freaking dog go after the kitten, there might be blood and flying heads." Gabe said seriously.
Victor rolled his eyes, "Please. Mr. B wouldn't kill us because of a pet."
Gabe snorted and I turned to him with narrowed eyes, "Do you have something to tell us, Gabriel?" I asked him in my "team leader" voice.
He immediately straightened in his seat and paused before answering, clearly choosing his words with care.
"Nothing that needs to be said at this exact moment." He told me clearly.
I pursed my lips, not liking that he was keeping something from us, but nodded my head in understanding.
I trust my brothers, they will talk when they need to.
We arrived at Mr. Blackbourne's house and I saw that the others were already there.
Getting out of the car I turned around to help the pup out of the car when I caught Sang coming out of the house from the corner of my eye.
"Kota?" she called to me, voice tight and uncertain.
"Yes, Sweetheart?" I turned to her with a smile on my face.
She looked beautiful as she stood in the fading light from the setting sun, her hair shining in an almost reddish glow.
"What is that at your feet?" she asked worriedly.
I frowned and glanced down, seeing only the pup who was sitting quietly at my feet, its dark gaze fixed on Sang.
"The pup?" I asked feeling puzzled.
"Sweetie, that is not a pup." She told me seriously.
I lifted my gaze to stare in bemusement.
"That is a Hellhound, Kota." She told me seriously.
My eyes widened and glanced back down at the dog.
The creature was looking up at me with what I could swear was amusement in its dark gaze.
"Shit." I said.
"Let's not panic." Sang said in a soothing voice as she walked in my direction.
The others were quiet, watching the events unfold without saying a word or moving a muscle, clearly afraid of making a wrong move.
The dog turned its eyes to Sang when she approached and sniffed the hand she offered him before letting out a yip and giving her a canine smile.
A smile with a lot of teeth I couldn't help but notice.
Sang smiled back at the dog, but I suspect she was doing it more to show her teeth threateningly than as an expression of happiness.
After a few minutes of staring at each other the dog suddenly lowered its eyes and Sang nodded pleased.
"We are okay, now. Come inside, everyone." She said before turning around and going back inside the house by herself.
The others glanced over at me and down to the hellhound, expressions of shock and amazement in their faces, Gabriel in especial looked a little bit pale.
The dog stood on his four legs and practically strutted to the front door while we stood there gaping.
Vampires, werewolves, superpowers and creatures from hell.
Yep, life was never going get boring ever again.
