The Skinner Box
I don't know where I am.
Despite the fact that my eyes are open I can't consider why; my heart is beating, mind unfilled. I feel myself blinking but yet.. darkness shrouds me. My face is pressed into my arms as I had used them for a makeshift pillow while lying on the cold, hard ground. I groan, feeling my head and the newly found 'bump' there. Thinking during a moment of silence, my breath hitches in my throat as a true sense of fear washes over my body.
I can't remember anything.
Shakily, I stand to my feet, feeling the floor and nearby wall; the walls were smooth with tiny divots. Extending my hands in front of me as I walked a couple feet, I came in contact with another wall.
"What the fuck.." I mumbled as I turned to my right, sliding right into the next wall. It didn't take long after that to put two and two together of where I might be. I stop walking as my knees began to buckle and I carefully keep my balance. Tears sting my eyes and stain my cheeks as I'm realizing this isn't a dream- this is real.
The sheer fear of the unknown is enough to terrify me, but the fact that I am in the complete dark inside of a freezing, metal-like room sends me over the edge. I slide down the wall and plop on the ground with an audible 'thud.' Hysterical crying filled the empty space, only interrupted by my need to draw my breath. My screaming sobs bounced off the walls, the noise ringing loudly in my ear.
I cried for a long time.
My eyes grew sore as I felt the puffiness forming on the bags underneath my eyes. I wasn't sure how long I wailed, but my eyes were able to adjust to the darkness around me as I calmed down. Features that weren't distinguishable before are coming into view, like what seemed to be a door on the side of the room I left undiscovered.
Shakily standing to my feet once more, I looked closely at the floor to see if I would trip over any objects I couldn't see before. Walking through the empty room, my hands settled on the door before me. I ran my hands along the chilling metal, the temperature making my entire body shiver. My hand bumped into the doorknob and I felt a slight instant relief, but it was instantly replaced with panic when I tugged on the knob and it wouldn't budge.
"Fuck, no!" I pleaded, yanking on the doorknob. My fingers traced along the surface feverishly, trying to find any edge that I could grab onto and pull, but I couldn't find any edge. I could feel it deep inside me, like an uncontrollable snowball rolling down a hill. I smack my hands against the metal, my screaming becoming louder with each hit until I start to yank at the doorknob again. I yank 3 times to be exact, but the third time I pulled, I felt a spark of electricity surge through me. Screaming out in pain, I back away from the door- confused and in pain. It felt as if the doorknob just tased me.
Stumbling over my own feet, I stare back perplexed of what I just witnessed and had felt. After regaining my balance, I shuffled back toward the door. For a moment, I only stared at the doorknob contemplating touching it again. Was what just transpired real? Was I just really electrocuted by a door?
At this moment in time, my panic level began to rise as I yanked for the doorknob again. I started screaming at the top of my lungs out of sheer terror, begging for someone to hear me and let me out of this cruel prank. Before I could even react, a light above me started to light up every second with a deep red hue. With each flash of light, I was able to see my surroundings - which was nothing. Then...the alarm started.
The roaring and echoing of this alarm engulfed me as I dropped to the hard ground, shoving my fingers into my ears as I desperately tried to drown out the alarm. The booming noise rendered any logical thoughts or ideas I could possibly have as I nearly laid in the fetal position, screaming and crying like a scared child needing their mother. The noise seemed to go forever until the alarm began to slowly fade out. I could still hear the ringing in my ear as I slowly removed my fingers from inside my canal. I didn't move from my position on the floor, I just put my head in my hands and cried until I blacked out.
When I awoke once more, the room was still being lit up by the red light flashing on and off. I wasn't sure how long I passed out for, but I assumed it wasn't long being that light was still flashing. My eyes were pretty much adjusted at this point to the darkness and dimness of the room, I was able to see there wasn't actually a door. It was just a doorknob attached to the wall.
I let out a slight chuckle as my back hit the wall behind me, feeling defeated. There is something within this darkness that lingers like a threat- a promise of evil. Why is this happening to me? I've never done a damn thing wrong in my life and yet.. here I am! Stuck in a room with no explanation as to why. I felt tears sting my face once more, so I put my head up to stop them from falling down my cheek. Shaking my head, I look up the ceiling, something small catching my attention.
Standing back to my feet, my eyes never leave the corner of this room. Upon further investigation, I realize now I'm staring at a small camera in the upper corner of the room. My heart begins to pulsate as my brain shoots out negative musings like an automatic weapon. What the hell is going on!? Have I been kidnapped? Am I going to be tortured?! Am i going to be murdered?! Who the hell is watching me? With these thoughts racing to my head, I panic.
I started to throw myself at each wall, trying to make something budge. I begin to perspire from running back and forth nonsensically around, using my energy to scream and yank this non-existent door open one last time. The moment I touched the handle, that damn alarm went off again. Beads of sweat rolled off my forehead as I pulled this doorknob, feeling a burning pain in my arms from the strain of pulling something with no give. The alarm was still pounding in my head as I felt a sharp, burning pain in my feet.
"Fuck!" I scream, jumping backwards and sliding against the floor. My breath hitched in my throat when the red light illuminated a dark liquid on the floor, so I dropped to the ground to look at my feet. There were tons of little red dots forming on the bottom of my feet as the beads of blood began to run together, dripping on the floor beneath me. I let out a frail noise, almost sounding like a painful 'yelp' as I looked on the ground near the wall the doorknob sat.
Hundreds.
There were hundreds of tiny needle-like spikes sticking out of the divots of the floor. Screaming out in pain as my adrenaline wore off, I backed myself into a tiny corner, looking between the corners in a panicked voice.
"What the hell do you want from me!? What the fuck did I do to deserve this!?" I screamed, putting my head in my hands once more. With each scream, I can feel my energy leave me little by little. With no more left to do, I fall over to my side and cry myself to sleep.
There was a sound of what seemed like metal clinking against something. I opened my eyes a bit more when I saw the glowing edge the wall as a door opened. The light blinded me at first as I put my arm up to block the brightness. I saw three shadows approach the door. There was shuffling and whispering as two of the figures let the third figure drop in the middle of the room. It was a girl, she looked to be a bit younger than myself. Her arm fell in front of me as, her body falling limp. I tilted my head to the side, seeing she had a brand on her right wrist that read '2.' With the light still shining, I looked at my wrist and felt knots in my stomach as I saw the number 1 was branded into my wrist, and then it hit me.
"W-wait!" I tried to scramble to my feet as the two figures exit from the cube-shaped room I was locked in. I tried sprinting toward the door, but it shut and locked in place before I even came close to reaching it. I threw my hands against the door and balled my fists until my knuckles turned white.
Whoever these people were, they were only getting started with me. With my heart in my mouth, I scream for my life.
