The Allies

It wasn't even like there were just a few directions to choose from. There were actually a countless number of ways to go with this. And any direction besides the right one could mean the difference between winning and losing this war.

Scary let out a frustrated sigh. He sat back against the tree behind him, and listened to Simon and Luft packing up the campsite in the distance.

They thought he knew what he was doing, but they were terribly mistaken.

Of course, it was his fault they had that idea. When his two friends woke up that morning, Scary gave them the news that he knew where they were heading. A lie of course. He had no idea where they were going, but one thing he knew for sure is that they couldn't stay in the same spot forever. It would mean practically begging to be found. And the last thing they needed right now was to be caught unawares.

"That's great!" Simon had said. All his worries instantly vanished by the one lie Scary told. "Where to?"

"I'm not sure I can tell you that quite yet," Scary replied slowly.

Ever trusting Simon merely accepted this response, and went to work. Luft was a little tougher to convince.

"You don't seem too confident,"

"You're going to have to trust me, Luft," Scary reminded him. "We built this resistance on trust,"

"Yeah, and look where that's taken us so far," Luft replied coldly.

Scary tensed at the reminder, but shrugged it off after a moment of silence. "Fine. I don't know exactly where we need to be. I just know the general direction I need to go. The answers will come to me,"

Luft still didn't look convinced, but he kept his mouth shut, and went to offer Simon a hand.

"I'm going to scope the area while you two finish up," Scary informed them.

"Sounds good!" Simon laughed, juking out Luft and shooting a crumpled blanket into his backpack.

"Your speed clearly puts me at a disadvantage," Luft complained, passing him a pillow.

"I only shoot threes," Simon waved off his excuses. "And you can fly!"

Fifteen minutes later, Scary was still staring at that damn coin, wracking his brain for any sense of anything. Where was he supposed to be going? And why did he know that symbol?!

"Send me a sign," Scary whispered under his breath. "I'll take anything at this point,"

"Almost... there," Gray collapsed through the trees a few yards away, with dried blood trailing down the side of his face, from his eyebrow.

"Anything accept that," Scary specified. Then he climbed to his feet and grabbed Gray's shoulder.

"Ouch! Watch the arm-" Gray glanced up at his assailant, and sighed in relief. "Scary!"

"Shut up!" Scary hissed, slapping a hand over his mouth. "You're going to blow our cover,"

Crystal stepped into the clearing behind them, and took in the scene. "Hey, it's Scary!"

"Oh for God's sake!" He dropped Gray and threw his hands up in the air. "How many of you are there?"

"Just us two, I promise," Gray panted. He staggered back against a nearby tree to gather his breath.

"I told you to leave me alone," Scary snapped, raising an accusing finger at the Child's face.

"Actually, you told me to go home," Gray corrected him, raising his own finger in return. "Which I did. Then I came back,"

"And brought someone with you?!"

"I honestly didn't know she was coming," Gray replied sheepishly.

"He broke up with me," Crystal announced.

"I don't care!" Scary replied, then he spun back to Gray. "It doesn't change the fact that you brought her along!"

"She found me in Oscar's house, and neither of us knew the way back!" Gray countered. "I didn't exactly have a choice!"

Scary grew alarmed at hearing Oscar's name. "You went back to Oscar?" He hissed wildly. "You can't keep drawing attention to him! They'll-"

"They got there before I did," Gray interrupted. He lifted the necklace out of his backpack, and held it up in front of Scary. "The room was a mess, there was a corpse on the ground, and this was in the middle of the floor,"

Scary took the necklace in his palm, and inspected it closely. "I've seen this before..." But, of course, he still couldn't remember.

Crystal and Gray let him have a minute, before Gray took a step towards his hero. "We're ready to offer our services," he whispered.

Scary glanced at Gray with an odd look on his face, almost as if he was contemplating the offer. But a split second later, his walls came back up. Scary shoved the necklace into his pocket, and turned to head back into camp.

"I don't accept mortals," He replied over his shoulder. "Not anymore..."

Gray hesitated, then leapt forwards and snatched the coin from Scary's hand.

"What the-" Out of habit, Scary drew his wand. "Give it back, Grayson,"

"This?" Gray held it right up to Scary's nose. "Sure. As soon as you tell me what it is,"

"It's a coin," Scary snapped, attempting to snatch it out of Gray's hand. But Gray yanked it out of reach.

"You have no idea," he insisted, holding the coin up again. "Do you?"

Scary flicked his wrist, sending Gray toppling backwards, and the coin into the air. He caught it easily and put it in his pocket. "I know exactly what it is," he replied coldly.

"Of course you do," Gray gasped, propping himself up against the first tree his hand touched. "Somewhere, deep down, you know exactly what that symbol means. But you can't remember it for the life of you,"

Scary stared at Gray, unsure of what he was getting at. How did he know all of this?

As if reading his mind, again, Gray reached into his backpack and pulled out Oscar's spell book. "The Rosetta Curse," he read aloud. "Effects may include missing appendages, blindness, vomiting, and severe memory loss," he looked up at Scary.

"I don't get it," Crystal whispered, not wanting to draw attention to herself, but curiosity outweighed her self restraint.

"His body is free again," Gray began, without taking his eyes off of Scary. "But part of his mind is still frozen. His hippocampus, the part of his brain that stores all of his memories. It'll take time to catch up with the rest of him," he reached into his bag and retrieved the Skelitin Saga from it's depths. "And everything you forgot... is right here,"

Scary stared at the novel of his life, then glanced back up to Gray. But he didn't make a sound.

"Whether you like it or not, you need me. Sara had all the answers, and now everything you need is in my hands. And I can tell you right now, exactly what that symbol is," Gray riffled the pages until he found the bookmark. Then he held it out towards Scary. "Would you like to find out?"

Scary glanced at the two mortals before him, and debated the pros and cons of this situation. He couldn't risk any more lives than he had to for this war, Dare did teach him that. But the honest truth was that, none of them stood a chance if he couldn't remember what half of the clues were talking about.

In response to Gray's offer, Scary took the book from his outstretched hands and opened to the page Gray had singled out.

"The skull with the spider on it used to be on your front door while you were growing up," Gray explained, as Scary traced the sketch of the symbol with his finger. "It's your family crest,"

"I haven't been home since I fought with Freaky," Scary breathed, scanning the pages that detailed his trek through his very own family tournament. "You're never supposed to go back,"

"Since when has Scary Skelitin ever followed the rules?" Crystal demanded. Gray glanced at her in surprise. "What? I pick things up,"

Scary snapped the book shut, and handed it back to Gray. Without a word, he headed back into camp.

"Should we follow?" Crystal asked, glancing at Gray.

"If he wanted us to leave, he wouldn't have been shy about telling us so," Gray assured her. He pushed himself off the tree and wandered after Scary, Crystal following close behind.

"If we're ready to go, start heading southwest," Scary announced, walking into what was left of the camp. He lazily waved his tent into wisps of air with his wand.

"Gray!" Simon sped over and gave him a tight squeeze. "Other girl!"

Crystal glanced at Gray with pleading eyes as the strange, speedy, man, wrapped her up in an embrace. But Gray merely smiled at them. "Nice to see you too, Simon,"

Luft floated over and touched down beside them. "What are you doing here? And who's this,"

"I'm his ex," Crystal introduced herself, extending her hand.

"Her name is Crystal," Gray rolled his eyes. "And I came back to help out,"

"Scary approved this?" Luft and Simon exchanged a look and turned to face Scary.

He never even glanced up from his work, erasing their footsteps, and anything else that would leave a trace of their presence.

"I'm pretty persuasive," Gray replied with a grin.

"Fine," Luft shrugged. "If Scary says you're alright, than welcome to the team,"

"Awesome," Gray high-fived Simon. "This is actually a dream come true right now. I mean... I've known you guys my whole life!"

Luft blinked. "Uh... what?"

Simon reached out and patted his friend's shoulder. "I'll explain on the way,"

"Speaking of 'on the way'," Luft turned to Scary and waved him down. "Where exactly are we going?"

Scary hesitated. "I guess I'm going home,"

"Home?" Lift echoed. "What home? We've been living on the run since before I can remember,"

Scary kneeled down and began to trace out a map of the forest in the dirt. "The home I grew up in," he specified.

"How do we even get there?" Crystal wanted to know.

"My family tournament was run in these woods," Scary informed them. "In a clearing somewhere, we'll find a large stone arch. That was the portal we used to get home after finishing the race. If we find the arch, maybe we kind find a way to reactivate it,"

He pointed out his drawing and circled an area. "Here. That's where we're heading,"

"Well let's go!" Crystal cheered. "You guys go ahead, I'll wipe away this drawing so Inspector Gadget can't follow us,"

Scary gave her an odd look, then gestured everyone to follow.

"I'm glad you made it," Simon whispered to Gray.

"You don't seem surprised," he pointed out, earning a laugh in return.

"Why would I be?" Simon asked. "You were always meant to be here, Gray. As much as Scary hates to admit it, we need you,"

"Why do you say that?"

"Because prophecy always said we were missing something," he replied. "I think that piece we were missing was you,"
