Solstice Pt 1

After his nap, Will stares at the painting of his entire family with eyes on two subjects. The people who gave him hope from the very beginning that his blindness wasn't a limitation.

Holding a mirror to compare, her finds he has the same brown hair and eyes of his mother, Dorothea. The one who taught him how to sing.

He adjusts the mirror at an angle and smiles. He has his father's smile, bushy eyebrows, and jawline. Also, the courage to brave the world with a head held up high.

"Don't get stuck in that mirror," Yarlg jokes from behind.

"And ignore the good looks of my parents?"

Sindy softly punches his hip. "Today is not the day to be a narcissist!"

"But my middle name is Humble. William Humble Bennett-Ramirez," he holds back a chuckle.

"You would have to get your marriage certificate revised for that," Yang dryly jokes while handing him a goblet.

Vapors of warmth steam out. He wafts the aroma with his hand to his nostrils before stopping. "Oh, right. I'm not blind anymore."

"Would you like me to put a cloth over your eyes?" Yarlg offers without a joke.

"No thanks. I appreciate the offer," before taking a sip. Yang looks on in anticipation.

William mildly coughs up the kick in the back of his throat. He avoids spilling his drink by handing it to Sindy.

"I got you good!" The rogue exclaims before he's placed in a headlock by the bard.

Will gives him a noogie before letting him escape. "That was a good one, Yang."

The rest of his family walk up in their winter gear to meet with the four. Melody and Bumva each bring a bouquet of flowers while Jaime brings a satchel that clinks with each step.

"We are ready, mi amor."

He brings out his engraved mandolin and strums some notes. "Everyone, hold hands!"

They all link hands with Mel and Bumva laying a hand on Will's shoulders.

"A song of transportation,
Doesn't need much inspiration.
For the plot of graves we go,
Where bravery isn't needed though."

Within a blink, they arrive at the cemetery. Some people jump from their sudden presence, but they catch their breaths. The now-seeing mage sniffs the cold air attempting to eat through his winter clothes.

His ears pick up the near silence of the resting place.

Claude points towards the center. "Phineas' grave is over there. You can't miss it."

Without any fear, his boots crunch on their way to that destination. His former teacher is right because of the mage's statue pointing to the heavens.

"Here lies Phineas. His notable deeds: Slaying the Magma Dragon and being Engla's greatest mage and teacher to all," his plaque reads.

Will tilts his head quizzically upon looking at the statue's face. Phineas has a short beard and looks a lot younger than he imagined.

"One of his last wishes was to make a statue of him in his youth. That old coot was young at heart after all," Claude lightly jokes.

"He really was."

Luis steps forward to join them. "Magic, even the teachings of it, always got him excited for each day. I'm envious of him for that."

Will wraps an arm around his shoulders to comfort him. "You don't have to have his motivations, mijo. I bet he's proud of your progress. I am already."

Those words cause Luis to latch onto his father. Will embraces him back. Nanka runs over and hugs her brother from behind.

"I'm proud of you too," she gladly tells her sibling. Luis smiles between tears as they hold the embrace. A flurry of snowflakes land on their jackets.

"Thank you, Phineas, for...everything. If I had to count one moment to be grateful for, it's this: your legacy," he turns his head to his two magical children. Sniffles accompany their smiles. He takes off his gloves to wipes their tears away with his hands....

Luis pulls out a lantern from his bag. He opens it for Nanka who uses the pompa spell to light it up.

"Ponere," he incants while pouring some magic into it. The sparkling fire doesn't die out even after closing it. He sets the lantern gently near the statue. He puts his hands together and the others join in for a silent prayer. Afterwards, Mel and Bumva lay bluebells and white roses.

Jaime opens his satchel and each person takes a small bottle of liquor.

"You four first," he tells Will, Claude, Nanka, and Luis. They step forward to the statue while opening the bottles. At the same time, they pour out the contents to bless Phineas' plaque. The alcohol spills out onto the snow.

"It's not gin, but drink up, old friend," Claude whispers.

"Thank you for everything, teacher. Enjoy," William adds.

"Thank you for teaching me."

"Thanks for teaching my brother. You were a wonderful mage," Nanka gently praises. The rest of their loved ones pour out on the plaque while saying words of respect til it gets to Mel and Bumva.

"Thanks for watching my back and teaching my beloved," the orc states with deep respect.

"Thank you for keeping our secret. I hope to see you when it's time," she whispers at the end.

Bumva turns to her and embraces her tightly. "Expect more of these even up to that time," she lightly "warns" her.

The former Skeleton Queen pats her back and allows her to let go first.

After some time, Will touches the statue. "I will see you soon, old friend," before moving on. Mel and Bumva lead him by the hands to the graves of his parents. He slowly pulls out his mandolin and strums.

"I got to see your faces, mom and dad. I really got the best of both worlds from you two. I lived a life I think you would be proud of. You have great grandkids now. Barriba and Soran Bennett. They are in the hands of good parents who will help them figure out this world you gave me. I'm.....ready to rejoin you when the time has come. We got so much to tell you in person."

His loved ones shed tears from his words. Even Barriba and Soran cry despite not understanding why. Will scoops them up in his arms. He gives them each a peck on their small heads. They respond by clutching themselves to his jacket.

"There, there. Barriba and Soran. You can let it out if you want. I love you both so much," he lightly growls to lift their spirits.

The half-orc cousins sniffle from the comfort of his words and tone. Their family drizzles alcohol on their graves.

"You were the best grandparents I could ever ask for. Including my mother's parents. You....didn't love us any less because of what we looked like," Gashamog pays his respects before hugging his father and Melody.

"I'm fortunate to have shown you my magic. Your faces lit up brighter than my spells," Nanka reminisces.

Ater everyone pays their respects, Will notices everyone is looking at the ground as a shared troubling thought is on their minds. That he and Melody will join these gravestones right after the festival tonight.

"Everyone, thank you so much for joining me on this day. Let's go see their farm and get some drinks at the guild!" He announces to distract their minds. Even for a little bit. "In fact, Nanka and Hector can have some pitchers on me!"

The group chuckles.

"But I'm too young- Alright, I will do it," Hector corrects himself to have as many moments as possible with his mom and dad.

Will strums his mandolin and recites a song that takes them to his parent's farm. The bard takes in the flat blanket of white surrounding the red doors of a barn and the single door of his former home. Neighing, clucking, mooing, and squealing occupy the barn as workers secure the door.

He makes his way to one of them. "Hello!"

The Englishmen turn in the direction of his voice. They recognize him, but their jaws drop as he waves directly at them. They approach him and are astonished.

"You can see, Mr. Bennett?!"

"I finally used a spell to fix my sight. I wanted to see everything properly," he bluffs.

"Do you need anything from us?"

"Not at all. Well, one thing," he reaches into his jacket to hand a pouch of gold to them. "Have plenty of drinks on me."

"Thank you so much, sir!" They jog away to enjoy their free drinks.

Esmerelda opens the barn with a key. Will walks inside and takes note of the many animals that greet him inside. He pets the heads of each blanketed cow and pig he comes across.

"You all look nice and healthy."

"We spoiled them with good feed," Esmie tells him.

"And the best blankets," Tuzah adds.

"You, Tuzah, Javier, and the others are taking good care of this place. They would be so proud of you all."

An embrace from behind surprises him. Esmie buries her head into his back with tears dripping on the hay covered floor. Tuzah hugs him from the side. He turns to face them.

"I don't want you and mom to go! There's so much I wanted to show you. Grandkids and all that. It's not fair!" Esmie sobs.

"It's not fair at all. I hate this!"

He wraps his arms tightly around his daughters.

"Seeing you both happy is all the assurance I need," before kissing them on the top of their heads. "I'm fortunate to see you all doing your own thing at your pace. That's all I ever wanted from you."

He continues to hold them in place.

Esmie breaks the embrace. "I'm sorry for misbehaving."

"Don't be ashamed of that feeling. I was upset when Phineas and my parents passed away," while wiping away Esmie's tears to look into her magenta irises. He does the same to Tuzah.

"I'm glad you all got your mothers' eyes. They stand out more than my mud brown eyes."

They chuckle from that self-deprecating remark.

"I at least have your laugh," Esmie chuckles.

"And I have your hair," Tuzah pushes back a strand of brown hair.

"That's my daughters," he flashes a smile that's contagious to them. "Let's join the others."

They didn't see their family outside but hear thudding coming from inside the house.

"I win!" Jr proclaims.

"You always win!" Gash complains.

The trio walks inside to see the brothers arm wrestling again while Ohgamesh holds her son.

"That's your strong father!" She points at her beloved.

The others watch on while eating bowls of pumpkin and squash soup. William gently strokes the door frame to piece it together from his childhood. The stairs that led up to his bedroom. His feet take their time, noticing gentle creaks along the way.

A nice bed with satin sheets welcomes him with a large bureau to the side. White hexagons continue their dance outside the window.

To think before that I was sleeping in a sack. Even then, this house was filled with love, as he goes down memory lane. His feet take him to his parents' room which has a similar setup, but with a hearth installed for the harsh winters. He soaks in the sights before closing the door behind him.

A collective of strained grunts grabs his attention. In Jr's hand are the hands of Gulak, Gash, Tuzah, and Nanka. He meets resistance upon the combined grip and push.

"Can't beat all of us!" Gash declares.

"You can do it, everyone!" Ghulnea cheers from the sides while holding Barriba.

"I can hold her for you," Will offers. The dwarf happily hands her over so she can cheer with both arms. He holds her in the crook of his arms so she can watch her dad.

The team of four yell out...the back of Jr's hand meets the wood. They roar for their victory. Jr doesn't argue against his loss.

"That's my husband!" Ghulnea jumps into her husband's arms to give him a smooch.

"You do get a reward for trying," before Ohgamesh slides into Jr's arms to plant a kiss on the cheek.

"I like losing if it will be like this."

Will sits down with Barriba who turns to face her grandpa. Bumva gently blows a spoonful of soup before feeding him. His granddaughter reaches up for the spoon as she continues to feed him.

"Thank you, my goddess," before concluding his meal. He lifts his granddaughter over his head with a smirk. "Barriba!" He lowers her down. "Babajo!"

Melody stifles her laughter. He repeats this process with emphasis on the Span which works as she clutches her ribs.

"Oh, dear," Sindy groans.

"You two are made for each other," Ai mentions with a chuckle.

Even Barriba giggles as he continues to lift her overhead and down. "Maybe you will lift your father one day."

"Maybe even Jr. He needs someone else to lift him," Gulak jests.

Yarlg and Jr laugh with a growl.

"Our granddaughter will be the strongest woman of the Brutal tribe. Maybe she can join the initiation?" Bumva asks William for permission.

"If that's what she wants to do."

Barriba babbles out an answer.

He tickles her belly. "That sounds like a yes!" More laughs come out of the dwarven-orc baby's mouth. Ghulnea extends her arms and he hands her back. Bumva hands him Soran who's reaching out to him.

"Hello," he growls. His grandson growls back. He cradles him and stands up. He extends him out and quickens his walking pace. Soran coos from the experience. "Look, he's Soaring!"

Bumva cracks up from his terrible joke.

Melody is now in tears. "Stop! It hurts!" She wheezes.

The bard goes for another joke, but he settles his tongue. He continues to take Soran around the room before giving him back to Jr.

"Did you love your little trip?" He asks his son.

"Gwahh!"

The formerly blind mage walks over to Melody who's gripping onto a desk to recollect herself. He inhales some air to make his cheeks puffy. He turns her face to lock lips with her. She feels a long exhale of air entering her mouth. He separates.

"What was that for?" She asks with confusion.

"Just wanted to give you air since I took your breath away," he warmly smiles. That smile contagiously spreads to her face. An effect he always had on her.

She pulls him in for a kiss and exhales some air back to him. "What's mine is yours, mi amor."

He rubs circles on her cheeks with his thumbs. Her sparkling ruby ports are a wonderful labyrinth to get lost inside. His honey-brown eyes make her want to dive into him. All their love and years together summarized with that look.

"Mel? Mel?"

She shakes her head to refocus. "Yes?"

Bumva covers a full stock of firewood with her jacket. "We need more wood. Go ahead and get more."

Sindy casually opens the front door. Melody uses that "reason" to scoop up her husband and run out. The bard is astounded as they leave the house in a blur.

"Why did mom take papa with her for help? She's strong enough," Hector naively asks.

His siblings stifle their laughter. Jaime wraps an arm around him. "Let me educate you on women."

"But you're single," he points out.

"But I do have experience."

"Well, I can help," Claude intervenes. "The first thing about women is: If you treat them good and right, they will lower their defenses to you. Cherish that and you will both be happy."

Cara happily sighs as that method worked on her.

Somewhere in the snow dusted forest.

Melody sets him down on his feet. They don't waste a moment before locking lips again with eyes focused on the other. She walks him into a tree which sends a cold, yet pleasurable chill down his back. He wraps his arms around the small of her back to enjoy the warmth she's giving him.

She puts a hand on his chest while adjusting something under her dress. The black lace panties dropping to the ground excites him. She pulls down his pants to warm him up first...

William enjoys the juxtaposition of warm and cold as his body lies on the cold ground with hands fondling the softest parts of her flesh under her dress. She pins him down with her right hand on his chest as she takes control with rapid movements. Her eyes glazed with love and lust for him.

He sits up to kiss her lips. Their grunts accompany their shaking bodies. Red marks spread across his back. He pushes back her hair to admire the snowflakes tickling her face. Stars that illuminate an already beautiful night sky.

He's not done with admiring just yet as he pulls her up and leads her to a tree. He throws his jacket around her before pinning her hands behind her. He scoops her up and has her legs around his waist to continue...

After getting cleaned up, he takes her hand and kisses from the tip of her fingers, trailing up her arm, shoulder, and to finally her lips.

"Now, now. Save the rest for Bumva," Mel playfully scolds despite liking this. The doting bard spoils her on the other side.

"Te amo, Melody Bennett-Ramirez."

"Te amo, esposo. Mi amor, I have a question. What if we don't see other in the good place?"

He stays silent as something's on her mind.

"I did terrible things back then. I know I did good afterwards, but what if it's not enough?"

He walks up to her and clutches her hands into his. "There isn't a spell that guarantees where we will end up. However, If I don't see you there, I will fight the Cosmos to bring you up with me. That place won't be the same without you there. You are worthy. We will see our loved ones up there."

A smile cracks on her face from his unwavering confidence. She scoops him up and peppers his face with kisses. He brushes back a stray strand of white hair back before they return back to the house.

"......And that's how you seduce a woman," Claude's voice is heard.

"Hmmmm. That seems right," Hector responds which made his parents laugh.

"We're back!" Will announces. They find the table and kitchen has been cleaned.

Hector tilts his head at them. "Where's the firewood?" His face contorts after his talk with Claude and Cara. "Ewww!"

Esmie and his siblings laugh that he finally caught on. His parents give him a inquisitive look since his school should have taught him about anatomy.

"Jaime said we all came from a stork!" He answers with an accusing finger.

"And you believed me!" He mocks before he got slapped behind the head by Tuzah. Even then, she's laughing too.

"Mijo, don't believe your brother when it comes to love. Ask Cara, even Claude for advice," his mother urges.

"Anyway, who's ready for pitchers of ale and beer?" Will proposes.

"We are!"

The group gets together and Will plays a spell on his mandolin to take them to the guild. He can't wait to see how the others will react. They at least need to know before he and Mel pass away.
