Chapter Five- Destiny
The day had flown by. Even with Bren's help, reading all the scrolls and processing all the new information, she had never had as much inside her head before and it was starting to hurt again.
"Stop fidgeting!" Sister Ariana hissed knocking Eboni's hand from her temple.
"Sorry Sister" Eboni mumbled- all the Brothers and Sisters were currently stood lined up outside the Temple waiting for the arrival of the King of Rolezal.
She and Bren had spent all yesterday trying to figure out what the rest of the prophecy meant but to no avail. The High Priestess had told them that it was impossible to predict what would happen, but it didn't stop them from speculating. All they could do now though was wait for the Princess to arrive and see what happened.
They had watched all afternoon from the mountain side as the King's boats had docked and his entourage disembarked. 150 soldiers dressed in yellow tunics now marched up to the temple, following the most elaborately dressed people Eboni had ever laid eyes on.
Rolezal merchants were most well known for their dyes and clothing- their guests were not disappointing anyone on that front. Bright orange, purple, green and blue clothing were making their way up the mountain slowly, mainly due to the oversized shawls that the women were wearing, trailing on the ground tripping up everyone behind them.
The bright colours did nothing to help her headache.
When the group of 20 dignitaries leading the army neared the temple the High Priestess and Priest walked slowly down the steps to meet them.
Eboni strained her eyes to see the King, although he was one of the more brightly dressed people she was stood to far away to make out any of his features.
Being the youngest Sister in the temple she was positioned farthest away from the High Priest and Priestess. Bren was stood at the other end of the line as the youngest of the Brothers.
The Priest and Priestess began to walk through the temple ground towards the open hall, followed by the King and his people. Only the first two lines of soldiers followed them in, the rest stood rigid facing outwards.
I wonder which one the Princess is- thought Eboni as the Brothers and Sisters all filed through after the soldiers.
They walked slowly into the large open room, the usual white and green fabric that hung from the walls had been replaced with white and gold for their esteemed guests.
Chairs had been placed around the room to create a circle. As Eboni walked around to her assigned chair- a row behind the High Priestesses- she finally got a good look at the King.
King Gregor was a small portly man emphasized even more by the large oversized golden crown on top of his balding head. His trousers where bright purple and his tunic green, with intricate beading of silver and gold. He was looking at the young girl too his side with a smug smile on his face.
She had long pale blonde hair and wore a light blue gown, which would have been simple and elegant were it not for the bright orange shawl and pink shoes. Her tiara however, was the most extravagant piece of jewellery Eboni had ever laid her eyes on. The silver was twisted and weaved intricately around diamonds of all shapes, sizes and colours. It looked like it weighed a ton and yet managed to balance daintily on her head. The girl's eyes flickered around the room watching the Brothers and Sisters, who were now all sat ready for the formal greeting the begin.
The Princess's gaze landed on Eboni who smiled kindly- they were going to have to get along whether they liked each other or not Bren had pointed out yesterday when they were talking about what the Princess was going to be like. But after the she looked her up and down sneering, Eboni knew that wasn't going to be likely.
As she was a Sister of the temple Eboni didn't need to bow to any royalty, but the inferiority she was feeling by this girl's hands, or eyes, was not something she liked the feeling of.
This is who Elementi chose to give his element of Fire too?
Eboni sighed, she should not question the actions of her creator, he obviously knew something she didn't about the Princess and whether she- or the Princess- wanted it, their lives were now irrevocably linked.
Silence fell as the High Priest stood to address the room.
"Brothers, Sister and distinguished guests." He said nodding to the King. "King Gregor has called upon his ancient right as King to seek our council. The reason for which we are all eager to find out." His gaze fell briefly on Eboni before continuing. "King Gregor Jakub Rucksworth, High Commander of the land of Rolezal- why do you call upon the Brothers and Sisters of God's Land, first creation of our God Elementi?"
He nodded again to the King who slowly stood wheezing from the amount of effort it took him to stand from his chair.
"I- King Gregor Jakub Rucksworth call upon the Brothers and Sisters of our creator Elementi to present to you my most beloved daughter. The Princess Iasa Laurena Rucksworth, so that you may observe her gift from our God. I have long since known that she is special but what she can do proves it- she has power no one else has and that only us mere mortals can dream of." King Gregor finished his speech with a flourish of his hands towards his daughter who too was now sat with a smug smile on her face.
Eboni couldn't wait to wipe the smug smile from her face when the Princess found out that she wasn't the only special person with a gift from their God.
"Princess Iasa- please" The High Priest motioned for her to take the floor as he moved his way back to his chair, giving Eboni a warm smile before he sat down.
Slowly the Princess stood up and walked purposefully to the middle of the room.
"I am Princess Iasa- here is my gift from the great Elementi" Her voice, to Eboni's great surprise, sounding almost bored.
Eboni narrowed her eyes- knowing what the Princess was about to do with Fire, she had the overwhelming desire to evoke her own power and drain the energy in the air so the Princess's show would be underwhelming- fire could not burn without the energy in the air and now was not the time for the Princess to be reckless. Eboni caught Bren's eye, who raised an eyebrow then shook his head, she knew he had guessed what she wanted to do. He was always able to read her like an open book. Sighing she sat back in her chair- at least she would get to see what the Princess was capable of.
With a casual swipe of her hand the Princess engulfed herself in flames- gasps of shock and awe echoed throughout the room. Eboni rolled her eyes as the Princess dramatically raised her arms sending the fire flying out in all directions. Laughing and clapping from the audience quickly turned to screams as the fabric hung on the walls and ceilings caught fire.
Eboni turned from the now ablaze room to the Princess- wondering what stupid game she was playing, but as soon as she saw the Princess through the flames she knew something was wrong- her face was filled with panic and fear, as soon as she had put one flame out two more sprung up in its place.
Standing quickly Eboni approached the High Priestess.
"High Priestess?" she asked "Should I-?"
"Do what you must Eboni before she burns the temple down." The High Priestess spoke loud enough to engage the attention of the King. His eyes bulging at the suggestion his daughter had lost control.
Smiling Eboni walked through the fire easily- she had created a shield of energy around her, so her or her robes would not catch fire. Coming face to face with the Princess she noticed just how out of control she was.
"You need to concentrate Princess" Eboni instructed kindly but firmly, just like she had been taught.
"Don't tell me what to do peasant- now get out of my way before I burn you!" The Princess snarled before going back to the fire that was now edging closer and closer to the chairs and their horrified occupants who quickly scurried from the room. Not wanting to risk anyone getting hurt, closing her eyes Eboni concentrated hard. Drawing all the energy she could from the Princess without harming her, Iasa slowly calmed down, the fire ebbing out around them.
Opening her eyes, she saw that she was inside a circle of light. The Princess now stood open mouthed, staring at her.
Smiling Eboni flicked her wrist- if the Princess wanted a show she was going to get one. The light that surrounded them glimmered, the energy swirling and glittering. Raising her hand, she released a little of her own into the orb, willing it to shine brighter and brighter, before bursting out across the room in a technicolor light show.
Frenimies we love to hate, do you think Eboni and Princess Iasa will ever get on?
