8) Free the Child, Not the Parents

Suddenly a knock on the glass shook Atlantis out of a dream. It was still dark out, maybe two or three in the morning, but the water bubble had dissipated. The knock came again. It felt like an underwater earthquake (waterquake?) and left her ears ringing. She groaned and turned right side up. "Stop." The siren half pleaded. This was giving her a headache. Then a miracle happened: whoever it was actually stopped! On top of that, they apologized. So this definitely wasn't Zeus. And besides, Atlantis knew that voice. "Apollo?"

He nodded. Looking around nervously, the Sun god whispered, "Can you breathe?"

Atlantis shook her head.

"Okay. I'm going to melt this stuff and then take you to your parents. Zeus was lying. Poseidon and Amphitrite aren't here."

The siren tilted her head. 'What did he mean melt?' Atlantis watched as Apollo tied a rope around the rim of the bottle and shot the other end into the ceiling via an arrow. The god pushed the bottle over, but the rope caught it and silenced its gentle descent. Apollo tried to pull the cork off, but after a few seconds gave up and torched it.

Formaldehyde spilled out onto the marble floor, its disgusting scent dissipating into the room. Unfortunately, Atlantis still couldn't fit through the opening. She didn't have to wait long as Apollo melted the bottle enough so she could get out.

Atlantis coughed formaldehyde on the marble floor, and after she was down looked up weakly at Apollo. "Thanks, I guess?"

He smiled. "Can you thank me with a kiss?"

"No!" She exclaimed. "I don't like you."

"Alright." Apollo mumbled, and scooped her up bridal style. "I love the fact you can't walk. I get to carry you!"

"Put me down!" she whined.

"And leave you here so Zeus can find you in the morning and kill you? I don't think so." Despite her objections, Apollo flashed her to Delos. "Let's have a date instead!"

The table they were sitting at looked out across the ocean in almost every direction, which made Atlantis feel homesick. Also, her parents were still in prison. "Where are my parents?" She asked firmly, staring at the Sun god.

"After the date." Apollo replied, with a dismissive wave.

She snarled, threatening to go into siren mode.

"Okay, fine! But promise me we can have a date afterward."

Atlantis grudgingly agreed, knowing that was the only way to find Poseidon and Amphitrite.

The table and chairs disappeared, dropping Atlantis on the sand, but not before she grabbed a muffin and stuffed it into her mouth. Apollo smiled at the siren in arms as he flashed inside. Atlantis gaped.

The left side of the house was blindingly gold and bright, while the other side was navy and silver, with a quiet feel to it. A clear line was visible where the two halves met. "Your parents are this way." Apollo said, leading her past statue after statue of himself.

They entered his room. A flock of what Atlantis remembered were crows fluttered around the room. Under them, in a sea of statues and lit candles (as if the room needed to be brighter), a giant bed sat. In the middle, there was a sun icon with Apollo's name written around it. Wincing in the harsh light, Atlantis looked at Apollo questioningly. "My parents are here?" She asked, looking longingly to the closed door.

"Yep!" Apollo promised. "In the closet. At least that's the entrance to where they are."

"So what I'm getting is there's a prison in your closet. That's not unsettling at all."

"It's not a prison." He retorted, rolling his eyes.

Inside, the two found- you guessed it- clothes. And an entire wall dedicated to sunglasses. But Atlantis had little time to admire the rows upon rows of gilded eyewear- she was on a mission. Finally, they reached a small door towards the back wall that Apollo opened with a small golden key.

The room in front of them was much larger than Atlantis would have expected, but then again she was dealing with gods who could bend the laws of architecture and physics. The siren had been expecting musty stone walls and black chains dangling from the ceiling, but instead was met with what looked like a blue and white lounge sitting in a few inches of water. Distractedly, Apollo released Atlantis to slide around on the smooth floor.

"Oh." Was all she said at the space, rather disappointed that it was unoccupied. Her disappointment quickly turned to anger. "Why did you bring me here?!" She snapped, whirling to Apollo. "You said my parents would be here!"

Her rant was cut short by the god's demeanor and expression. Shock and possibly dread played over his face as he silently stared. The temperature sunk noticeably. "They- they were here. I promise! I tricked Zeus and hid them right here in this room until you could come back! Where could they have-" It was Apollo's turn to be cut off. He noticed a paper taped to a table, picked it up and read. "'Hi, Sunbutt and Fishbutt! Missing something? Hahaha! Come and get 'em!'" The god gaped. "Sunbutt?! Nobody gets away with calling me Sunbutt! Not even Artemis!"

"And I don't have a fish- oh wait." Dropping the subject of nicknames, Atlantis came over. "Does it have a signature?"

He nodded. "'C and S'. Does that ring a bell?"

Shaking her head, the siren frowned. "Is it too much to ask just to see my parents again?!" Tears rolled down her cheeks, adding to the water on the floor. "When I asked to go to Olympus, I didn't expect so much trouble! If I had known, I would never have set fin in that place."

Apollo caressed her, whispering encouragements as the siren wept. They would find whoever C and S were, and reunite the royal oceanic family.
