13) The Calm Before The Storm

Atlantis groaned, wavering between sleeping in and waking up. "Atlantis," a quiet voice whispered in her ear. "Wake up, Lanti."

The siren opened her eyes to be face-to-face with Apollo. "You're sober?" She asked, astonished.

He frowned. "Not exactly the good morning kiss I was hoping for but yes. And I made you breakfast. Tiberius! Bring the princess her meal!"

Her son came in carrying a golden tray overflowing with food. The siren surprised to see dishes she remembered eating as a child. "How did you get this?" Atlantis asked, looking at her husband.

Apollo smiled and shrugged. "I have connections."

After the meal, Atlantis allowed herself to be carried downstairs, despite the siren being able to move about on her own. As a wedding gift, her parents had given her a magical necklace that allowed her to float on a thin bed of steam. That way, Atlantis could go anywhere in the island without the whole thing having to be redesigned or the siren constantly worrying about dehydration.

"Wait, where is my necklace?" Atlantis asked. She never took it off, but now there was nothing around her neck.

"You're always wearing it, and I figured it must get dirty." Apollo said nonchalantly. "So I sent it to be cleaned. It should be back tomorrow."

The siren thought she remembered her mother saying the necklace couldn't tarnish, but then again it had been almost six years ago.

Contrary to the day before, Apollo stayed with Atlantis and Tiberius the whole day and into the night. After Tiber had gone to bed, the two lounged on the beach and talked between sips of wine. "So what's with you?" Atlantis asked. She had been wondering all day. "Not that I'm complaining, but you're different. What happened?"

"I don't know." Apollo said, gazing out to the horizon. "I just said to myself 'Apollo, this is stupid! You've left a siren and your sister alone to care for your son! That's not right.' And I agreed with myself. I shouldn't do that. So I stopped."

"That's it?" Atlantis asked. "You just- had a revelation?"

"No. I said 'I have to fix this.' In case you haven't noticed, you and I don't really work well together, Atlantis. We fight all the time and I'm sure Ti has noticed by now."

"He has." The siren confirmed. "But we don't have to fight. We're having a great time right now. Just be here, and actually be a father. That's all I needed."

"True. But all good things have to come to an end, don't they?"

Atlantis looked at him. "I guess, but why did you say that?"

"Today has been good. But we can't do this forever. I wanted to give you something good to remember me by."

"Apollo, what are you saying?" The siren asked nervously, leaning away from him.

Silently, he scooped up his wife and set her in the water. Atlantis trying to get to Apollo, but the sand was suddenly so scalding hot, she couldn't. From the shore, Apollo stared at her with an unreadable expression. "Everything on this island is now mine." He said firmly. "The house? Mine." A golden force field closed around the large building.

Atlantis thought of Tiberius, trapped inside as Apollo continued. "The beach? Mine." The siren leapt back as a wall of Greek fire erupted around the island. Waves crashed against it, but of course, the green flames kept burning underwater.

"Our little son Tiberius? Mine. And by the way, his name is Apollo II now." Unknown to the siren, a black bracelet clamped itself onto her son's wrist, preventing him from leaving the house unless Apollo allowed it.

"But there are some things you can keep." Apollo smiled, his figure barely visible through the flames. "My son's tail? He won't be swimming." The god pressed his thumb into the black bracelet on his wrist and the other one released a poison into the boy's tail. All Atlantis hear was a scream erupt from the house. A few seconds later, the green fire parted to admit a gold and teal liquid into the ocean. It turned to water as the flames closed.

"Here's one more thing you can keep." Apollo took off his ring, which burst into flames. He blew the ashes in the siren's face. In a sinisterly calm tone, Apollo asked. "What am I saying? I'm saying goodbye. Goodbye, and don't ever come back, Lanti." Apollo vanished, leaving his ex-wife and her tears alone in the sea.
