Chapter 1

Sins of the Mafia - 1

I opened my eyes to the familiar surroundings of my room. I slowly observed the pastel blue colored wall and the light orange curtains. It was crazy how the two colors were the perfect complement with each other, bringing forth a harmonious element. I slowly sighed when I realized that I couldn't ignore the elephant in the room any longer. I angled my head to a forty-five-degree angle so I could meet the eyes of my mother. My ice cold grey eyes were cowardly as they strained to look anywhere but my mother's commanding presence. I swallowed my reluctance and cleared my throat.

"Ciao Mamma" I croaked, sleep still evident in my voice. I waited quietly for her to turn around and acknowledge my words. Slowly as almost to build up an ominous mood my mother's eyes met mine. Our eyes seemed to dance together, both of our iris's locked onto each other. I waited for her to break the silence and answer the obvious question, Why was she in my room?

One thing about my mother is that she is calculating. I watched as her eyes raked over my bed head and lack of clothing. Her mouth twitched slightly in disapproval. " Francesca, get ready for dinner," my mother said her demand in her heavily accented voice.  With her usual tone of finality, I knew it was absolutely pointless to question her.

She inspected my face for any sign of disagreement when she found none she swiftly turned around and exited through the mahogany door that joined my bedroom with the rest of the house. I unenthusiastically removed my feet from my bed. I sat at a ninety-degree angle for a while, as I stared at my gold painted toenails for a while, analyzing my every action up until now.

Eventually, I stood up and made my way to the bathroom. A shiver ran down my spine as the soles of my feet touched the cold bathroom tiles. I quickened my pace and immediately stepped into my shower. My hands tightened on the metal dial as I adjusted the water to my desired temperature.  I let the hot water cascade down my skin to wash away any fatigue. I felt all my muscles and my mind relaxing to the steady sound of the water being pelted onto the shower floor.

After what seemed like the eternity I stepped out of the shower with slightly pink skin. I reached blindly in search of my towel. When I finally found it I dried off and removed every water droplet.  I  contoured my face and  slipped on a little black dress.

I went downstairs ignoring the slight rumbling in my stomach. When I finally descended to the first floor, I saw my family.  I looked from left to right acknowledging my father, mother, brother and sister. However, as  I came to the end of the line I  came across  4 unfamiliar faces.  Two men who looked as if they could be brothers if it weren't for the gray appearing in one of their heads. Although both were insanely handsome, I allowed my eyes to wander to the two women standing next to them both were gorgeous. Perhaps they even rivaled the looks of Aphrodite.

"Ciao," I said in  sweetly as everyone's eyes were on me. I was not ignorant to my father's choice of occupation , I  assumed that the family present was just one of his new business associates. I glanced up and took in the brooding appearance of the  stranger's son. I took my time to study him with a chiseled jaw and captivating green eyes I instantly labeled him as a playboy.

I heard my father making introductions, I smiled at the appropriate parts. I felt my mother's cool blue eyes gaze at me, like she was looking for anything short of perfection in my appearance, I tried hard to fight the urge to meet her ice cold gaze. Luckily as if sensing an awkward moment about to usurp the atmosphere my father invited us to the patio where we will be having dinner.

It was as if Aphrodite wanted to punish me for threatening her beauty, I was placed in a seat next to the mysterious rugged stranger. I immediately knew that this meal was not going to go as planned. I sat quietly as everyone on the table engaged in conversation. I was entranced in my thoughts about the world but Unfortunately I was brought back to reality by a hand on my thigh.

I blinked rapidly for a brief moment, then I narrowed my eyes on the offender. Before I had a chance to reprimand him for his actions my father spoke. "You will be marrying Adonis the summer you graduate from college." My father spoke with the same tone of finality that my mother had previously used on me. Once again it dawned on me that there was no point in arguing in a debate that I am certain to lose. I looked around the table to see everyone's eyes concentrated on me as if I was a ticking time bomb waiting to explode.

In conclusion, I simply nodded my head and responded with a curt yes father.
