THE SILVER SOCIETY

There are some mild spoilers for Where Angels Go to Die on this list in terms of who joins the Silver Society and what their powers are. A much larger spoiler from book five was intentionally left out. Pictures may not look exactly as the characters are described, but I tried to get as close as possible to help give you a visual.

BETHANY "BETH" ASHFORD

At the start of the series, Beth is a happy-go-lucky teenybopper. She's fourteen and has lived in Salem for her entire life. She is a devout Christian but is very accepting of other people and their beliefs. Beth is endlessly cheerful and always sees the best in people. For reasons Jade can't comprehend, Beth attaches to her as soon as they meet and refuses to go away. She becomes determined to make sure Jade is taken care of.

Beth was born to Lewis and Maggie Ashford, a lawyer and doctor who are considered pillars of the community. She has an older brother named Kevin who is away at college. Her family is like the picture-perfect "normal" family you'd see on television shows from the 1950s.

For reasons unknown to her, every warlock and demon in Salem seems to be determined to kill her. Beth is a very powerful empath with no training and no blocks. Upon meeting the Silver Society, they realize she needs to learn how to psychically shield herself or her empathy may kill her. Her soul is the daughter of the Goddess Kuan Yin. She is the twelfth person to join the Silver Society. Her Silver Society talisman is a silver cross.

There is much more to Beth than meets the eye, but the full truth about her powers does not come out until Warrior.

JADE COLLINS

Just prior to the start of Where Angels Go to Die, Jade murdered her parents. At the time, she was fifteen years old. She was born into a cult of devil worshippers from New York and her life was filled with torture and horrors she doesn't like to talk about. Although the murders were certainly justified given how evil her parents were, Jade ran away without being sure where she was running to. She viewed herself as a monster, and she knew the cult would come after her if she stayed. She ended up in Salem, Massachusetts, the one place where witches like her were not in the minority. There, she met Beth Ashford, who for whatever reason refused to go away no matter how rude she was to her. Jade and Beth became unlikely best friends after Jade realized demons kept trying to kill Beth and decided she was going to protect her. Upon learning she had no family, the Ashfords insisted on taking her in. Jade decided to become emancipated, but agreed to stay with them until the emancipation could be approved.

On the outside, Jade is sarcastic, angry, and sometimes even rude, but deep down, it's because she's trying to protect herself. She has serious trust issues and pushes people away out of habit. Once people get to know her, she is deeply protective of those she cares about and her sarcasm becomes funny instead of offensive.

Jade is a telepath and a practicing witch. She is telekinetic and can cast powerful spells. She is also a necromancer. She can communicate with spirits, resurrect the dead, and work with zombies. Her soul is the daughter of the Goddess Kali, which is part of the reason she is extremely at peace in cemeteries. It comes out at some point in the first book that Jade's soul is also the daughter of Alex's soul. Sometimes, they acknowledge this, and other times, they ignore it, but Jade and Alex do have a strong bond between them.

A tiny black kitten followed Jade from New York to Salem, and Jade decided to adopt her because of this. She named the kitten Bastet. It was obvious there was something magical about Bastet, and she soon became Jade's familiar.

Jade dislikes and distrusts people as a general rule, so she was very skeptical of the Silver Society upon meeting them. Despite this, she believes in destiny, and she ultimately decides to join them, making her the eleventh member. Her Silver Society talisman is a silver pentagram.

SPENCER CONNELLY

Spencer is stoic, mature, and very intelligent. He is an Oracle, making him one of the most powerful Seers in the world. He reads prophecies in his free time and tends to know a lot of useful information. He gets along very well with Cierra, the Silver Society's biggest bookworm. He's also a witch and has a vast knowledge of spells and magick. At the start of the series, he is sixteen years old. His best friends are Arnie and Aideen, making him the responsible one when Aideen and Arnie decide to run off and do something reckless.

He is very kind and is gentle by nature, so he tries not to harm anyone who doesn't deserve it. He tends to be overly practical at times, and he's shy when it comes to socializing. That is part of the reason it takes him a while to approach Jade about the fact that he has feelings for her. Spencer recognizes her soul and knows that his soul is her fiance, but he doesn't want to make her uncomfortable or pressure her to go out with him. Spencer has a lot of knowledge of his soul's past lives and the destined path he is supposed to follow. His soul is the grandson of the Goddess Hecate.

When he was eleven, Spencer's father killed himself in front of him before he could stop him. He doesn't talk about it, but this plays a major role in his decisions during Perfectly Perfect. His mother, Judy, is very close to him. She is also an oracle, and she often guides Spencer when he isn't sure what decision to make.

Alex met Spencer early into his time in Salem because he's so close to Aideen and Arnie. He was the fourth person to join the Silver Society. His Silver Society talisman is a silver owl on a chain.

CIERRA DENTON

Cierra is brilliant. She is almost constantly reading. She can spend hours researching files at the Unit without getting bored. At the start of the series, she is seventeen years old. She is full of random facts and loves to share them, occasionally rambling once she gets started. When it comes to things of a historical or scientific nature, Cierra is almost never wrong.

She is clairvoyant. Although actual visions are new territory for her, Cierra often picks up facts out of thin air, sensing threats or other information people need to know. Cierra's soul is an Oracle, but Spencer is still training her to unlock her full powers. She has an extremely basic knowledge of magick and spells, and most of it is theoretical more than practical, as casting spells isn't really her thing. Her soul is the daughter of the Goddess Ma'at. Her Silver Society talisman is a silver ankh on a chain. She was the sixth person to join the Silver Society.

She can be a little bit socially awkward, but she prefers books to people anyway. Joining the Silver Society has helped her come out of her shell slightly. Her mother died when she was ten while in labor with her half-sister, Terri. The only father Cierra has ever known is Tyler Denton, a very good man who she always calls "Dad." After her mother's death, Tyler continued to raise Cierra as his own. The truth about her birth father comes out in Secrets, but I won't spoil it here.

As the series continues, Cierra gains a reputation for finding herself in some pretty unusual situations, including getting trapped inside of an evil book. This becomes a bit of a running joke throughout the series. There are some things that could only happen to Cierra.

Although she's more of a supporting character in the first book, Cierra becomes one of the most important characters in the entire series.

ARNOLD "ARNIE" GELMAN

Arnie has not had an easy life. In his nearly sixteen years, he's lost more people than anyone should ever have to lose. His parents were killed in a fire when he was nine, and he has been shuffled around from foster family to foster family ever since. Although his best friend Aideen's family tried to take him in, his social worker never allowed it. Because of this, Arnie has a habit or running away or getting into trouble. The only decent family he's lived with are the Berlins, and he's never allowed to stay with them for long.

Arnie is a slayer. He's also a very powerful empathic healer. He is the top memory modifier in Salem. He is Aideen's human servant, and when she's over the edge, he's the only one who can always talk her down and hit her off-switch. They have been best friends since they were babies and he would do anything for her. His soul is the son of the Goddess Hecate.

Every girl Arnie has ever fallen in love with has died because his soul is cursed to always lose his girlfriends. He carries the weight of their losses with him everywhere he goes, and despite his obvious feelings for Melissa, he refuses to call her his girlfriend because he's terrified that will sentence her to die as well.

Arnie has a kind heart and a very sarcastic nature. When he's not forced to be serious, he can usually be found playing pranks on people to lighten the mood or cracking jokes. He will always try to defend those who cannot defend themselves. He's been through hell, but somehow, he keeps going despite all of the pain. He was the third person to join the Silver Society. His Silver Society talisman is a silver dagger with a pentagram etched onto it.

CASSANDRA JONES

Cassandra is a slaying machine. Although she was born in Japan, she was abducted by corrupt slayers when she was two years old and was brought to Salem. The corrupt slayers raised her to never feel emotions or show weakness. She eventually freed herself from the corrupts, and at eighteen, she is the top non-corrupt Slayer in all of Massachusetts. She's fierce, determined, and doesn't take anyone's bullshit.

Although she's usually very serious and has very little patience for most people, Cassandra is somewhat close to Aideen and Alex. She tolerates the members of the Silver Society, even though she wants to smack them half the time for acting stupid. Her temper is no joke and she can sometimes be very quick to anger.

Her primary role in the Silver Society is a physical one. She is their best warrior and their strongest Slayer. She can handle almost any crisis practically and calmly. She has the potential for magick but doesn't waste her time with it, as she excels much more in combat. She is exceptionally gifted in Martial Arts, has an unnaturally strong stamina, and has remarkable reflexes. She's good at grounding the others because, as she likes to put it, she's the least empathic person on the planet. Her soul is the daughter of the Goddess Durga. She was the fifth person to join the Silver Society. Her Silver Society talisman is a silver sword.

More of her history is gone into in Warrior, but I won't spoil it here.

DYLAN MESSINA

Dylan is, first and foremost, a musician. Music is his entire life. He plays the guitar, sings, and writes lyrics and music. He's always got a song in his heart. At the start of the series, he is sixteen years old. Dylan's parents were corrupt slayers, so when they were killed by the good guys, he understood why it had to happen. Instead of opting for foster care, Dylan became an emancipated minor, getting a job at the Unit.

He is a powerful healer, and although he's empathic, he doesn't usually take on the injuries of others when healing them. He is also a gifted slayer, and a very good criminal investigator. His soul is the Goddess Sarasvati's son. His Silver Society talisman is a silver guitar pic.

He can usually be counted on to make the others laugh, as he tries never to take things too seriously. He cares very deeply for his friends and will do anything to take care of them. Dylan is an excellent shoulder to cry on, as he knows when to push and when to back off. It's his easy-going nature that makes Jade warm up to him so quickly. Although he often seems like a goofball, he's actually very wise, and he sees things with the kind of perspective most people wouldn't expect him to have. Deep down, he is very mature, and he is dedicated to doing the right thing and proving he's nothing like his parents. He was the eighth person to join the Silver Society.

MELISSA MORGAN

Melissa is quirky, funny, and full of snark. She flirts with just about everyone she meets, but she's very dedicated to the love of her life, Arnie, even if they won't label their relationship because Arnie has issues. She often says outrageous things to try and get a rise out of people and sometimes crosses the line, especially when she's nervous. She loves practical jokes and is skilled at pulling them on people. She identifies as bisexual.

At the start of the series, she is fifteen. Melissa's humor and bubbly personality hide a terrible secret. Her parents died in a car crash when she was two, and her Uncle Joseph and Aunt Mary Anne raised her. Neither have been kind to her, and her uncle has been sexually abusing her for years. She hides this fact from everyone, including Arnie, and occasionally cuts herself to try and cope with her pain and trauma. Unlike the rest of the Silver Society members who are still in high school, Melissa is enrolled in Catholic school instead of Bishop High School, which she absolutely despises.

Melissa is a shapeshifter. She has the potential to train as a slayer. She is interested in witchcraft and has a basic understanding of magick. She has one other ability that doesn't get revealed for a couple of books, so I won't spoil it here. Her soul is the daughter of the God Loki. She is the tenth member of the Silver Society. Her Silver Society talisman is a silver athame with flames etched onto it.

ALEXANDER "ALEX" PAXTON

Alex is the guardian of the Silver Society, and is the original member. In each of their incarnations, it is Alex's job to find the other members and train and protect them. He is twenty-one at the start of the series. He moved to Salem from New York to begin finding the other members when he was eighteen. At birth, he was given a silver scroll which gives him information, but almost never provides a straight answer. It frustrates him to no end, and he often beats it up or flings it against the wall. This scroll is his Silver Society talisman.

Although he's very serious when he needs to be, Alex can be laid-back. He tries to keep everyone else calm and functional, and remains strong whenever he's around the others. He is passionate about protecting the innocent, and he works for the Unit. He used to work for the New York Unit as well before he moved to Salem. Alex is an all-around psychic. He has many different abilities, which helps him guide the others. He gets strong visions sometimes which alert him when trouble arises. His soul is the son of the God Vishnu. Because of this, Alex can split bodies off to be in up to five places at a time. He always puts the needs of the people he care about before himself.

Alex had a pretty happy childhood. His parents are divorced but are still good friends. His father is married to a woman who's barely older than Alex who is named Bobbi. Aideen insists on calling her Bambi. Juan and Bobbi Paxton have young twins named Jack and Jill. Alex's mother, Jodi, is now dating a woman named Lynn, and they're very happy together. He also has a younger sister named Hillary, who is in college.

AIDEEN PHILLIPS

Aideen is a vampire, a witch, a slayer, and a punk. She's pyrokinetic, can summon dragons, has the ability to cast powerful spells, is a Reaper, and is generally feared by the bad guys in town. Although they keep trying to kill her to see who can actually keep her down, Aideen always resurrects herself. She's one of the top slayers in Salem, and she's full of sarcasm, snark, and a lot of attitude. She never goes anywhere without her combat boots.

As a powerful necromancer, Aideen often works with the dead. She is extremely close to her father, Benny, and also has a lot of love for her mother, Clarissa, and her somewhat flakey twin sister, Courtney. As much as Aideen mocks Courtney, she'd do anything for her. Her best friend, Arnie, is also her human servant, and he is extremely loyal to her. The two of them would die for each other. Arnie knows more about Aideen than anyone else, and vice-versa.

Her soul is the granddaughter of the Goddess Hecate. Benny's soul is actually her soul's cousin, but Clarissa is her soul's mother, so if Benny doesn't give her her way, she sometimes plays Clarissa against him saying soul's mom trumps soul's cousin. She is one of the most powerful Reapers in existence. As a Reaper, she can split bodies off and be in more than one place at a time. In theory, she can split off an unlimited number, although she's never tried to go for more than a few at a time. She was the first person Alex found and recruited to the Silver Society. Her Silver Society talisman is a silver dagger with a dragon etched onto it.

No one crosses Aideen and survives for long. She's fierce, powerful, and very impulsive. She will always do what she believes in right, no matter what happens. She fights incredibly hard for the people she loves, and she never backs down from a challenge.

JESSE RODRIGUEZ

Jesse is a polywere. His soul is lycanthrope royalty and he can communicate with animals. His wolf is his most dominant beast, and when he changes form, it's pretty much always into the werewolf. Both Aideen and Melissa like to tease his wolf and treat him like a puppy who's been naughty. Unless he's sent into a rage, his wolf is generally pretty gentle and snuggly, but when he's mad, anyone who gets in his way is in danger of being mauled. He is also a slayer. His soul is the Goddess Rhiannon's son.

Jesse's mother was married to his abusive father. Although Jesse often tried to defend her and ended up getting beaten up for it, one night, his father nearly killed him before beating his mother to death. His father is currently in prison. Jesse was put into foster care with a family of corrupt slayers. He snapped and killed them on the full moon. He was locked up in a psychiatric ward. After much fighting, Danny Eckerd helped Alex get legal custody of Jesse, and Alex has been his guardian ever since. At the start of the series, Jesse is sixteen. He was the ninth person to join the Silver Society. His Silver Society talisman is a silver wolf on a chain, which seems ironic to him given that silver is dangerous to him because he's a lycanthrope. Luckily, silver jewelry doesn't harm him, just silver bullets, daggers, and swords.

Although Jesse is often moody and angsty, he is also full of sarcasm. He has a lot of trauma in his past, but he tries not to let it hold him back. He gets into legal trouble fairly often because his wolf gets antsy and he acts out, so Danny is almost constantly getting him out of it. Danny likes to joke that being Jesse's lawyer paid for his fancy home. Jesse is very good at breaking and entering and can pick any lock. He's known as a troublemaker who doesn't care about anything, but deep down, the problem is that Jesse cares too much, and he acts out to mask his pain. There is more to Jesse's past and his powers, but those details come out in Secrets and Mirror, Mirror, so I won't ruin them here.

RANDALL "RANDY" SCHWARTZ

Randy is perfect. At least, that's what he wants everyone to believe. He goes out of his way to ensure he looks perfect, gets perfect grades, and is the star of every sport he participates in. He's on the football, baseball, basketball, track, and wrestling teams, and he never fails to shine. He's in incredible shape despite the fact that he's almost constantly eating. As he likes to remind everyone, he's a "growing boy" and needs the nutrition. He has been known to eat four sandwiches, a few apples, and cake in one sitting. At the start of the series, he is fourteen, making him the youngest members of the Silver Society until Beth comes along.

Randy is a slayer. He is telekinetic but has no control over it and tries not to use it. He has some mild training in magick. His contribution to the Silver Society is often more physical than magickal. He was the seventh member to join. His soul is the Goddess Hel's son, so he likely has other abilities he hasn't unlocked yet. His Silver Society talisman is a silver lance engraved with Norse runes.

Randy has severe Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. If things aren't perfect, he panics. He cleans a little too well, and when forced to work on the Unit's clean-up crew, he leaves things cleaner than they were before any blood was shed. He is extremely terrified of Zombies because of a childhood trauma, something the others like to tease him about. Randy was raised by an alcoholic father who abused both him and his mother until the day he drank himself to death when Randy was twelve. Because of this, Randy is obsessed with being perfect so his mother doesn't have to worry about him. He is extremely close to her, but she has no idea he's a slayer, and he intends to keep it that way. He is a very good person, but his obsession with being the perfect guy can make things hard for him sometimes.
