SIGHTS OF SALEM
These are some of the locations you'll see mentioned frequently in the books. I took several of these pictures on my many trips to Salem, but not all of these are mine. If it's one of my photos, I specified it. I don't own the rights to the other photos.
THE BURYING POINT
(All photos of the Burying Point were taken by me. I make a point to visit it and pay my respects every time I go to Salem.)
The Burying Point, also known as the Charter Street Cemetery, is Salem's oldest cemetery, with graves dating back to before the Witch Trials. It is one of the oldest cemeteries in the United States, opened in 1637. Some notable people who are buried there include Judge John Hathorne from the Witch Trials (and great-great-grandfather of the author Nathaniel Hawthorne), Rev. John Higginson and Rev. Nicholas Noyes (of the Witch Trials), Mary Corey (second wife of Giles Corey), Nathaniel Mather (younger brother of Cotton Mather, who died before the Witch Trials began), and several others. The cemetery is next to the Salem Witch Memorial, built to mark the 300-year anniversary of the Witch Trials.
The Burying Point is mentioned frequently in these books. It's one of Jade's favorite places. Several of the other Silver Society members also visit it frequently, and it is often the location of supernatural activity.
ESSEX STREET
Essex Street is the center of Salem life. It hosts many shops, museums, and restaurants and is a popular stop for tourists. When wandering through town, the Silver Society members frequently find themselves on Essex Street. I took the first photo, but not the second.
GALLOWS HILL PARK
Gallows Hill Park was believed to possibly be the location of the Witch Trial executions, although no one was certain because Salem covered up its own history for a very long time. The exact true location technically remains unknown, but most historians agree it was Proctor's Ledge, which is at the bottom of the hill. The park hosts an extremely steep hill that's very difficult to climb, as well as an eerie tree overlooking a bit of a cliff that may or may not have been the location where they tossed the bodies of accused witches into a pit, discarded like trash.
Despite its dark lore (or maybe because of it), this park is one of Jade's favorite locations. She often runs there when she's stressed out. The next two photos were ones I took on one of my many trips to Salem.
PICKERING WHARF
(All of these photos are ones I took.)
Pickering Wharf is a beautiful location where a famous ship called The Friendship often docks. It has several shops and restaurants which overlook the water. This is where Arnie and Melissa first met and is a location that appears frequently in the books. This next photo is actually of the wall where Arnie and Melissa met.
SALEM COMMON
The Salem Common is a park located in the center of town. The famous Hawthorne Hotel overlooks this park. It's a popular site for families and tourists to visit. The Common was used in the movie Hocus Pocus. This park is where Dylan likes to sit and strum his guitar, and it's where he met Vynn.
OLD TOWN HALL
The Town Hall is near the center of town. Important events are often held there. It has a very rich history that gets explored a bit in book seven. The building was used in the movie Hocus Pocus. In the world of the Silver Society, it was built over a very special location which is explained in Book 7. I took the first photo (the Town Hall at night), but not the second.
SALEM WILLOWS PARK
The Salem Willows is a stunning park named for the weeping willow trees which are planted there. It's a very peaceful place and is beautiful to visit if you're a fan of nature. There's also an arcade, campgrounds, and places to eat. It sits beside the water.
Shooter and Danny both live across the water from the Salem Willows, giving them a gorgeous view of the water and the park. The next photo is one I took of one of the weeping willows in the park.
