IMPORTANT CHARACTERS IN BOOK 1
This list contains major spoilers if you have not finished reading Where Angels Go to Die. You should not read it until you have completed that book.
NEW YORK DEVIL WORSHIPPERS
ALESTAIR
Alestair is a complicated man. His soul is the Ultimate Darkness. A lot of people think that makes him the Ultimate Evil, but that's not true. Although he does do a great many evil things, he started off simply as the darkness meant to balance the light that would eventually become the Hindu God Vishnu. The two are complete opposites but one cannot exist without the other. He created all creatures of the dark, and Vishnu created all creatures of the light.
Alestair is incarnated in Queens, New York. He works with all of the New York Devil Worshippers, although he was officially born into the Queens sect of the cult. His incarnated name is Peter, but the Devil Worshippers all call him Alestair because they know exactly who he is.
It was through the cult that Alestair met Jade. His soul is obsessed with her. Although most parts of her soul are extremely gentle and somewhat submissive, Jade is strong. It is because of this strength and the fact that she's not afraid to tell him when he's being an asshole that Alestair is especially fond of Jade. He gave his word he won't hurt her. Alestair's word is binding and he will not break it once he has given it.
Alestair is an exceptionally powerful ally. There are very few entities who can truly stand against him. He commands all of the powers of the Darkness as well as many psychic skills which are neither dark nor light. Owing him a favor is never good, however, so Jade is very reluctant to call on him for help unless she is truly desperate. He is the guardian of her son, River Joseph. Jade asked him to protect Joey because he is probably the only entity strong enough to protect such a special and unique little boy. Alestair was so stunned by her request that he accepted without hesitation. He is actually very fond of Joey and finds him amusing.
Although Alestair is considered evil, he has the capacity for good. He generally ignores it in favor of being evil, but when it comes to Jade and Joey, he has proven time and again that he has good in him. They seem to be the only ones who can bring it out. Incarnating as a cult kid and experiencing the horrible things they go through in life tainted him with just enough good that he has become capable of a small amount of compassion, but he tries to pretend that's not true.
BALTHOS
Balthos is an immortal demon cursed to walk the Earth as an assassin for hire for the forces of evil for eternity. He began his existence as a powerful Demon of Light. He is destined to live forever alone to atone for allegedly betraying the Powers of Light. His history is complicated, and not what it appears. He is not actually evil, but is bound to do as the Powers of Darkness command. He is often summoned by the Devil Worshippers to assassinate those who betray them that they can't take down on their own.
Balthos first appeared in the series to execute Jade for killing her parents. Although he is fond of Jade, he cannot defy his orders. Luckily, Aideen showed up. Balthos described Aideen as his favorite Reaper. As Vampire and Demonic Royalty, Aideen was able to overrule his orders and free him from having to kill Jade.
Although he is extremely dangerous, Balthos is more of an ally than an enemy. He longs to touch the light and be able to have his freedom. If it were up to him, he'd live his immortal life peacefully. Balthos is not only cursed to live alone, but he also cannot have any luxuries except for weapons. "Luxuries" include things likes a coffee maker, pillows, blankets, or anything else that might bring him comfort. He is allowed only a very small apartment in Manhattan which has no heat. He does have the ability to eat and drink, but only enough to keep his body functional, and nothing overly fancy. He is not allowed to eat chocolate or drink alcohol because they are considered to be luxuries. He is barely allowed to drink coffee, and only black, when he is working and needs it to help him stay alert.
JONAH
I left Jonah's picture out because he doesn't actually appear directly in this book. For his photo and another biography, please see the list for Book 8, but only if you've read all the way to that book.
Jonah is the leader of the Manhattan Devil Worshippers. He is an extremely evil man, although he likes to observe pleasantries and act as if he's a gentleman. He is a sociopath who enjoys torturing others for power. He is one of the most dangerous members of the cult. He still hopes to recruit Jade to the dark side, but is determined to kill her if she refuses.
Jonah is the older brother of Jebediah, who is one of the people in charge of the Queens Devil Worshippers. Unlike his little brother, who tortures cult kids horrifically but later shows remorse as he patches them up, Jonah has absolutely no capacity for compassion despite having been raised as a cult kid himself. He is all about power and doesn't care what he needs to do to achieve it.
In book one, he is only mentioned by other cult members, but Jonah does appear later on in the series.
RENEE KARSON
Renee was a power-hungry twenty-year-old from the Brooklyn Devil Worshippers. She was the daughter of one of its leaders. Along with her cousin, Keither, and her younger sister, Moira, she was holding Jade's son hostage as they searched for the tomb where angels go to die. Renee was cruel to Joey, and she was also cruel to Moira. She tolerated Keither as long as he remained submissive to her. She hoped to one day take up a leadership role in the cult. Her ambition made her determined to get the job done at any cost, and she enjoyed getting blood on her hands along the way. Her arrogance was her fatal flaw, however, especially when dealing with a child as clever and powerful as Joey.
Renee was also a corrupt slayer. She often wore tight red and black ensembles that showed off her body, and she always wore red lipstick. Her eyes were as dark as her soul.
When Renee threatened Joey in front of her, Jade kicked her into the wall of the tomb, which then absorbed her and sealed her inside. She was effectively trapped alive in there to be torn apart by the demons inside until she died and became one of them.
MOIRA KARSON
Moira isn't powerful or physically stunning like her older sister, Renee. The sixteen-year-old is timid and would rather be reading than doing what the cult wants. She constantly bites her nails until they bleed. Her fear keeps her compliant to the cult and her sister. It's obvious Moira is just a scared, abused kid.
When Renee pushed her too far, Moira decided to be what her sister could never be... Good. She courageously decided she was going to save Joey from the cult no matter what, even if it meant risking her own safety to do it. Renee almost killed her for her betrayal, but Joey saved her. It is unclear what happened to her after that, but she survived.
KEITHER LINCOLN
Keither was Renee and Moira's twenty-one-year-old cousin. Despite being older than his cousin, most of the time, he played the role of Renee's sidekick, although he didn't actually like her very much. Keither was not the brightest or the strongest, but he was a useful underling to his cousin so she kept him around. He was the son of one of the leaders of the Brooklyn Devil Worshippers. He was somewhat conflicted about his role in abducting and possibly harming a toddler, but he remained loyal to the cult out of fear.
Keither was a coward and tried to surrender to the Silver Society, even agreeing to tell them where the key was, but he was prevented from doing that as Margo arrived and killed him without so much as touching him. He simply stiffened and dropped dead instantly.
OTHER
JENNIFER FOWLER
Jennifer was a corrupt slayer who got turned into a day walker vampire prior to her appearance in the book. She got it in her mind to turn an unsuspecting Jesse into a snack and lured him out with the promise of a date. Using her enormous sex appeal, she distracted him by making out with him before sinking her fangs into his neck. She realized Jesse was a werewolf and decided to kill him rather than turn him, but Aideen arrived and killed her instead, saving Jesse's life. Unwilling to leave him vulnerable to whoever Jennifer's Sire was, Aideen took over the Sire bond and promised to protect him.
Jennifer only appears twice in the first book, but her role as "the skanky corrupt slayer that turned Jesse" is referenced several times in the series.
MITCHELL MARSHALL
Mitchell was one of Benny's best friends. He used to hang out with Benny, Danny, Johnny, and Clarissa when they were all in college. Unable to choose between Danny and Johnny, Benny made Mitchell the best man at his and Clarissa's wedding, naming the other two as more than that and including them as Groomsmen.
Unknown to anyone, Mitchell became a Warlock. He killed his and Benny's close friend, Gregory Porter, and ultimately killed Benny, too. This basically sealed his fate, as Aideen became determined to put him down for betraying her father and ultimately succeeded.
GREGORY PORTER
Greg was a good friend of Benny's. He was brilliant and enjoyed researching. He was a powerful Seer, but he did not see the betrayal of both his friend Mitchell and his wife Margo coming. While Margo kept Benny from going straight to their house when he arrived in California, Mitchell murdered Greg to keep him from revealing the truth about the tomb.
MARGO PORTER
Margo was the wife of Gregory. She seemed like a wonderful, kind woman. Upon discovering her murdered husband, she leaned on Benny for support while picking up where Greg left off on investigating the tomb. Realizing the tomb was in Salem, Benny intended to return and Margo decided to go with him. When they were ambushed by warlocks, Benny sent Margo to safety, unaware she'd set him up.
Margo delivered Benny's twin daggers to his daughters. She became Clarissa's rock, supporting her through her grief. No one suspected the truth. In the end, the truth came out. Not only was Margo a warlock, but she was also the key to the tomb. Joey outsmarted her and removed the key from inside of her, making it possible to kill her without unlocking the tomb. Aideen then used one of Benny's daggers to kill her. Ultimately after this, Aideen began carrying both of the daggers, although one technically belongs to Courtney.
