ASHFORD, CLINTON, ECKERD, & WINSTON LAW FIRM
The men who work at this law firm ultimately play a very important role as the books go on, so this is where you can get to know them. Be warned: If you have not read Warrior, there are major spoilers ahead.
LEWIS ASHFORD
Lewis was one of the most respected men in Salem. Considered a pillar of the community, he was one of the best lawyers in town. He was kind, charitable, and well-liked. He was married to Maggie and was the father of Kevin and Beth. They were good, church-going people who enjoyed helping others. Lewis and Maggie took in Jade as soon as they found out she has no one else looking after her. As far as everyone was concerned, Lewis was as mortal as they came.
The truth was, Lewis was born a warlock. He was forced to take a blood oath along with Maggie to kill Beth before her fifteenth birthday if they couldn't turn her evil. They both tried to fight it, but in the end, they lost that fight. Because of this, Jade and Aideen were forced to kill them.
His relationship with Aideen appeared to be that of a lawyer and his client at first, but as Danny and Johnny eventually figured out, Aideen and Lewis were lovers. The relationship began when Aideen was thirteen and was clearly inappropriate, but it appears that they had some sort of karma and it wasn't about their incarnations. Lewis struggled with the morality of their relationship and even tried to encourage her to date boys her own age, but they kept coming back to each other. When Aideen began dating Jesse, she finally broke up with Lewis, and he respected that. He remained an important part of her life, acting as a friend and a mentor instead of her lover, which was a far more appropriate relationship given their age difference.
Aideen was completely devastated when Lewis died. He gave her some serious trust issues, especially since she became the warlock assassin after her father's death and she viewed all warlocks as the enemy. After his death, Lewis tried to reach out to apologize to her, but Aideen blocked him.
He was the first father figure Jade had who wasn't a monster, and even after the truth came out, Jade still felt love for the person he'd been before she knew. Not only did Lewis accept her, but he accepted her son and took him in without judging her for being such a young mother. On some level, Jade will always be grateful to Lewis and Maggie despite what happened in the end.
Lewis is one of the most complex characters in the series. He initially appeared to be a wholesome, good man, and on some level, that's true. He didn't want to be evil, but he couldn't escape from his heritage. If Lewis had a choice, he wouldn't have been a warlock. He worked so hard as a lawyer not to provide a good cover identity but to do something good in the world to make up for the evil he was part of.
MARK CLINTON
Mark is possibly the most clueless man in Salem when it comes to the supernatural. He can see something happen and will find a scientific, logical explanation for it even when there isn't one to find. His power of denial is legendary. Despite this, Mark was actually raised as a warlock. It is highly likely that the trauma he experienced growing up caused him to shut out any and all supernatural activity. He doesn't remember any of the things he experienced as a child.
He is Maggie Ashford's older brother. He and Lewis were very close. He loves Beth and Kevin very much and is a good uncle to them. When Lewis and Maggie died, Mark wanted to take Beth in, but she chose to get emancipated instead. This hurt Mark deeply, but he tries to respect her choice, and he continues to look in on her when she allows it.
Mark is a skilled lawyer. Nearly all of his clients are mortal, and those who aren't keep their supernatural lives to themselves.
There is an inconsistency in the books about whether Mark's last name is Clifton or Clinton. I'm trying to fix that as I edit them, but I know it's currently not correct in several places. His surname is Clinton and the law firm's name reflects this. Eventually, this will be corrected in all of the earlier books.
DANIEL "DANNY" ECKERD
Danny is a wisecracking vampire who doesn't always know when to shut up. He was born a vampire and is a member of the Uanie, but the other Uanie tend to brush him off as insignificant because he rarely takes anything seriously. Danny enjoys laughing and cracking jokes, and he is never without a sarcastic response.
His older sister, Erin, was a highly respected witch. He was very close to her and doesn't like to talk about her because her death devastated him. He considers Johnny and Benny to be his brothers and best friends. He's very close Clarissa, Aideen, and Courtney because of Benny.
Despite his goofy nature, Danny is one of the best lawyers in Salem. He almost never loses a case. He is Jesse's lawyer, and he likes to joke that gig alone paid for his house, although he actually inherited it. He helped Alex get Jesse released from the psych ward and become his guardian. In a crisis, Danny can be counted on to get the job done, and he will always fight for those he believes deserve his support. His friends mean everything to him and he won't hesitate to help them when they need him. He's a very good man who likes to let everyone believe he's an asshole.
Danny is actually a very powerful vampire. When crossed, he has no issue destroying his enemies, but he doesn't typically show off how much power he possesses unless he's pushed. It's never a good idea to challenge him, and those who do usually lose pretty spectacularly, both in battle and in court.
JONATHAN "JOHNNY" WINSTON
Johnny is one of the most powerful witches in Salem. He is kind, brilliant, and extremely honorable. He will do anything for those in need and is not afraid to fight for justice. He's trusted and liked by pretty much everyone he meets.
About thirteen years prior to the start of the series, Johnny lost his wife and children. His wife, Kate, was also a witch. Their children were seven-year-old Apollo, three-year-old Imogen, and their infant daughter, Phoebe. Apollo was as gifted as his father and began having visions of a psychic serial killer one day. That killer figured out Apollo was exceptionally psychic and went after the boy. Johnny had a vision of the attack and crashed his car as he tried to get to his family. By the time he was able to get word to the Unit to get to his house, his family had been brutally tortured to death. Johnny still blames himself for his failure to save his family. He doesn't talk about it.
He is possibly the one person in Salem who is genuinely above reproach. Johnny always does the honorable thing, even when it's extremely hard. He is Danny's conscience. When they were kids, Johnny was always responsible, and Danny was always getting into trouble. Benny provided a happy medium between the two.
Johnny is the strongest precog in Salem. The only person who comes close to being as strong as him is Joanna. He is highly respected in the Pagan community. He would literally give the shirt off his back to someone in need. He is extremely close to Clarissa, Aideen, and Courtney. He's especially attached to Aideen because he understands her in ways most people do not. When Aideen is in trouble, Johnny is usually the first adult to step up and try to help her. He has come to her rescue more than once. He views all of the Phillips women as his family.
