Chapter 5: A hard shell

"Namjoon... Y-You don't understand! Jungkook is... very weird.." Jimin added as he looked at the door and back at Namjoon to lower the tone of his voice. "I told him yesterday that my door would be locked, but in the morning, I woke up and found out that my door was unlocked!" Jimin continued to complain as Namjoon tilted his head.

"Well? Did you ask him why he did that?" Namjoon asked the younger while Jimin nodded his head.

"He claimed he was scared of the thunder and came into my room to sleep with me..." Jimin added as the Dispatcher began to laugh and make fun of the Chief.

"Let me guess! You were shirtless too!" Joked the older as Jimin remained quiet, making the older start to laugh. "Aw, Jungkook loves you!" The man continueda. But, Jimin just made a sour face and refused.

"No he does not! There is nothing between us.. He's weird and I don't like it." The man bickered and folded his arms, turning his body to face Namjoon and lean against the window. "Falling for him is like commiting a crime."

"Oh come on, he's not that bad. He's a prince!" Namjoon continued as Jimin rolled his eyes and looked down at the ground.

"You know I don't want to fall in love. If I do, they'll be the next target to get killed. My weakness.." Jimin stated and locked his stare at Namjoon. "The boy has the looks but set an off first impression with me. He's too happy, too caring. He made me breakfast and smiled when I watched over him from the seat. He CHOSE to do this for me and actually went walking to the store to buy groceries! Tell me that's not creepy! I barely know the kid and to him, it's like we're married." Continued the older as Namjoon sighed and placed his hands on his hips as soon as he stood up.

"Or... He's willing to bond with his Chief or partner as you may say, get on your good side or maybe... He loves you!" The older teased the man more and made Jimin shake his head repeatedly.

"No, no, no! That isn't right! We just spent one night under the same roof. He can't love me." Jimin retorted. Namjoon only shrugged and made a smile, showing off his deep and attractive dimples.

"Remember, you're seen as the best Chief alongside your Father back in Seoul. So, it's cute for the little guy to look up to you. It's an honor for him to finally work with you. Don't get hung up on his actions. He's only trying to do right by you." The older continued as Jimin was about to add onto it when suddenly, Jungkook stepped in with a cup of coffee as his smile was nothing but a blank yet, slightly sad face.

The boy looked up and realized he was interrupting their conversation and flinched as he quickly made sign gestures to apologize, while Namjoon chucked and responded to Jungkook's sign language. "That's okay, Jungkook. We were just closing up here." Replied the older to Jungkook as Jimin looked at Jungkook and then at Namjoon. Feeling a little confused at how good Namjoon was able to catch Jungkook's quick gestures.

              "How did you...?"

"Sign language. It's not that hard. Learn it." The older added as Jimin's phone chimed, and this made Jungkook turn to look at Jimin before quickly averting his eyes to set the coffee down and sit. Not wanting to bother Jimin with anything. It was like he overheard the two talking about him. Leaving Jungkook to feel a little set off by their discussion.

Jimin swiftly looked at his phone to see that he recieved mail from one of the detectives on another case that happened to come across surveillance footage of last night's attack during the storm. "We got it! Namjoon!" Jimin said happily as he quickly turned on his laptop on his desk and sat on the office chair out of glee.

Jimin accessed the file and played the video as the dispatcher looked over the screen and watched over the surveillance footage. Leaving Jungkook to feel left out from it all. So far, his first day wasn't as good as he hoped it would be. He watched the two friends look over the video with such a smile as Jungkook looked down. Feeling guilty for unlocking the bedroom door to sleep by Park Jimin, waking up ealy and making the Chief uncomfortable by making him breakfast. In his mind, it was okay... But, Jimin just didn't seem too happy to have the younger. He just couldn't fit in anywhere.

In the footage, they could see a shady silhouette of what seemed to be a girl, breaking into a store and stealing jewelry as she kept her face hidden. This was around the time Jungkook was with Jimin, wasting valuable time with silence instead of bonding. This figure was linked to the rest of the crimes. Finally having the image and figure of the killer... But, her face wasn't shown at all. Which pushed the team back on the progress they just earned. But recieving such footage actually had them going somewhere!

"It's something! Ah! This is great! We'll need to get crime evidence on how she left that store. Maybe there will be a strand of hair or something!" Jimin continued talking to Namjoon like he was his partner, instead of the sad and little mute boy by the couch against the wall.

"I'll get my team on it. I will bring back what we found. Okay? I'll see you later." Namjoon added happily as he took off from the room. Plunging the atmosphere back into silence and awkward tension between the partners. Jungkook looked a bit down and Jimin realized it.

"Okay, what happened? Did someone brew their cup of coffee before you did?" Jimin joked as the detective looked down and shook his head. "Jungkook? Man up and get over here. You need to set your schoolgirl heart aside and focus! You can't get soft out here." Testified the older. Not realizing that Jungkook must have heard everything before he walked in. "So, we finally have the footage to get at least a glimpse of the killer! What do you think?"

Jungkook watched over the footage and nodded his head, but he couldn't shake off how upset he really was. It distracted him. Jimin looked at the boy and leaned back to look at him longer. "What's wrong with you, Jungkook..? Communicate."

However, the boy just shook his head and looked away as his gaze was locked onto the floor. Jimin was confused and just wanted Jungkook to focus, but the boy looked sad and the man didn't even dare to put two and two together to figure out that he hurt the boy's feelings. Either way, Jimin wouldn't apologize because he was just being honest. Jimin chose to ignore Jungkook's attitude and stood up, tightening his tie as he gazed back at Jungkook who was sitting on the couch with a blank face.

"Hey, let's get to the crime scene and take your camera. You could be the crime scene photographer. We need one of those and I hate using my Polaroid for it." Jimin added as Jungkook nodded his head and followed along. But since then, he dared not to look Jimin in the eyes. Jimin left the coffee at the table, still fearing Jungkook must have poisoned it. He still couldn't be too sure about this boy... So, he treated him differently. Everthing the boy would offer,  Jimin would always grow suspicious. It was part of his life, having trust issues for every little thing. Of course, it was the outcome of being targeted by criminals,  that's why he was like this.

Jungkook joined Jimin in his car as the boy sat against the car door with his camera while looking at Jimin start to drive. He kept staring at Jimin as this called the attention of the older... Making Jimin look back at the silent boy from the view of his mirror. "Staring..? Do you need to text me something?" Jimin asked as they reached their first red street light. Jimin tried to communicate, but the boy shook his head and kept looking down. "You're a very weird kid..." Jimin claimed and let out a chuckle to make it seem like a joke, but Jungkook didn't even smile. He was too smart to know that it wasn't a joke at all. It was the truth.

Soon, they reached the crime scene as Namjoon's team had yet to show up while police officers were taking notes from the footage being played within the store the suspicious figure stole jewelry from. Jimin stepped out of the car along with the young detective and pointed to the glass on the floor, the broken glass up ahead and the mess inside the store. "Take pictures of it. I'll talk to the officers inside." Jimin ordered Jungkook to do while the boy never returned a smile and this didn't seem to bother Jimin... yet.

As the boy was taking pictures, Jimin stepped in and met up with the officers. "Hello." Jimin said as the two smiled and felt glad their boss came to see the crime scene for himself. At the moment, catching that killer was everyone's priority. They knew if they can catch her, they'll be able to get down to the root of all the crimes that have been occuring lately.

Jimin then approached the footage once more while he gazed back to see Jungkook focusing on work. Taking pictures and that's it. Jungkook knew the Chief wasn't going to give him much on his first day. If this didn't shout how much Jimin didn't really bond with Jungkook and didn't seem to grow fond of him, what did? Jungkook was actually by the door when he heard those things. Jimin, out of everyone, he never expected the Chief to get so rough with him. This made Jungkook stop in between pictures to gaze at the glass in silence. Wishing he could say something... But how could he?

Namjoon finally pulled up with his team as he passed by Jungkook, looking back to see that the boy was still silent. At this moment, the older just wondered what mean thing the Chief must have told him. It was Namjoon's job to get Jimin use to his new detective whether he liked it or not. He wouldn't get any other detective than Jungkook himself.

"Hey... Jimin.." Namjoon called to Jimin as he pulled him aside to talk to him. "What the hell did you do to him?"

"RM, I am working. I'll handle the drama after work." Jimin stated, causing the older to fold his arms and stare at the man in disbelief.

"Newsflash, that is your detective, your partner and he will be your friend. Don't put him aside. It's bad enough that he can't talk to you if he feels bad. You can't expect to win the race on your own, sometimes... You need someone to help you along the way." Namjoon told the Chief. Knowing Jimin would eventually talk to the boy to patch things up because at the end of the day, Jimin had a soft side like any other person who had a hard shell out there.
