Chapter 2

The morning sunlight filtered through the curtains, casting a soft glow over their bedroom as Haoyu slowly opened his eyes. The house was quiet, save for the faint sounds of birds outside, and he took a moment to savor the calm. He turned his head and smiled, finding Xiaocheng still asleep beside him, his face relaxed, breathing steady. It was in these moments that Haoyu felt most at peace, surrounded by the simple joy of being together.

Carefully, so as not to wake him, Haoyu slipped out of bed, stretching his arms above his head. The day was already brightening, and he could hear faint rustlings from the kids’ room—a sign that Lu Haofei would soon be awake and ready to tackle the day with all the energy of a seven-year-old. Haoyu chuckled to himself, imagining the twins, Xiaoyu and Xiaohu, likely tangled up in their blankets as they always were.

As he padded down the hallway, he passed the children’s room and paused, peeking in to find them exactly as he’d imagined. Haofei was already sitting up, rubbing his eyes sleepily, while the twins were nestled together, Xiaoyu’s tiny foot draped across Xiaohu’s back. A warm surge of affection flooded Haoyu’s heart as he watched them, marveling at how quickly they were growing, how much of his world they had become.

“Good morning, little ones,” he whispered, stepping inside and ruffling Haofei’s hair, which earned him a sleepy smile. He knelt by the twins, gently waking them with soft pats on their shoulders. Xiaoyu was the first to open her eyes, her sleepy gaze meeting his as she let out a yawn.

“Papa…” she murmured, reaching out her arms. Haoyu gathered her up, holding her close, and soon Xiaohu was awake too, blinking at him with the same bright eyes he’d inherited from Xiaocheng.

“Come on, let’s get breakfast started,” he said, guiding them out of bed. The kids clung to his sides, their small hands wrapped around his fingers, and they headed to the kitchen together.

By the time he had breakfast underway, Xiaocheng had joined them, wrapping an arm around Haoyu’s waist as he stood at the stove. Haoyu leaned into his touch, savoring the warmth of his presence, the comforting familiarity of his embrace. Together, they moved through the kitchen like a well-rehearsed dance, exchanging smiles and soft glances as they prepared the morning meal.

As they ate together at the table, laughter filled the air. Haofei was in the middle of a dramatic retelling of a dream he’d had, complete with wild hand gestures and sound effects, while the twins listened, wide-eyed and captivated. Xiaocheng chimed in with a few playful comments, making the kids giggle, and Haoyu found himself watching them all with a profound sense of gratitude.

This was his family—his world—and each moment spent with them was a gift he cherished deeply.

After breakfast, they all piled into the living room for their favorite weekend ritual: family storytime. The kids scrambled onto the couch, finding their spots beside Haoyu and Xiaocheng, who took turns reading aloud from their chosen storybook. Today, it was a tale of adventure and magic, with dragons and brave knights, and Haoyu’s voice rose and fell with the rhythm of the story, his words painting vivid pictures in the minds of his captivated audience.

As he read, he felt Xiaocheng’s hand slip into his own, their fingers entwining naturally. Haoyu glanced over, catching his husband’s warm smile, and felt his heart swell. They’d shared so many of these moments over the years, but each one felt just as special as the first, each one a reminder of the love that had brought them together.

When the story came to an end, the kids begged for just one more, and Haoyu obliged, launching into another tale with the same enthusiasm. He loved these moments, the way their home was filled with laughter and warmth, the way the children looked at him with wide eyes, hanging on to every word. He felt a profound sense of purpose here, in the heart of his family, surrounded by love.

“Okay, team! What’s next on our agenda for the day?” Xiaocheng asked,  with a playful grin, arms crossed.

“Can we go to the park?” Lu Haofei suggested, his eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. “I want to ride my bike!”

“Yes! I want to go on the swings!” Lu Xiaoyu added, jumping up and down, her braids bouncing with her excitement.

“Can we have a picnic?” Lu Xiaohu chimed in, his little face serious with determination.

Haoyu exchanged a glance with Xiaocheng, a shared smile playing on their lips. “A picnic at the park sounds perfect,” Haoyu agreed. “Let’s pack some snacks and enjoy the beautiful day outside.”

“Yay!” the kids cheered in unison, rushing to gather their favorite toys and picnic blankets.

Xiaocheng and Haoyu joined in, helping the children gather sandwiches, fruits, and juice boxes while packing their favorite games. Haoyu couldn’t help but chuckle at the chaos of excited voices and little hands racing around the kitchen.

“Okay, everyone, let’s make sure we have everything,” Xiaocheng said, glancing around the room. “What do we have?”

“Sandwiches!” Lu Haofei declared, holding up the carefully made lunch.

“Juice boxes!” Lu Xiaoyu added, her tiny hands gripping a pack tightly.

“And my toy truck!” Lu Xiaohu exclaimed, running in circles with his favorite toy.

“Perfect! Now, let’s head out,” Haoyu said, herding the kids toward the door with Xiaocheng at his side.

Once outside, the warm sun greeted them, and the fresh breeze danced through the air. The park was just a short walk away, and the family strolled together, laughter filling the space between them.

As they arrived, the park opened up before them, a vibrant playground alive with children playing and families enjoying the day. Lu Haofei raced ahead, leading his siblings toward the swings.

“Come on, let’s go!” he shouted, his excitement contagious.

Haoyu and Xiaocheng followed closely behind, smiles on their faces as they watched the children take off with such enthusiasm.

“Who can swing the highest?” Lu Haofei challenged as they reached the swings, his competitive spirit shining through.

“I can!” Lu Xiaoyu declared confidently, climbing onto a swing with determination.

“Me too!” Lu Xiaohu echoed, scrambling onto a swing next to his sister.

Haoyu and Xiaocheng took turns pushing the kids, laughter mingling with the sound of squeaking swings. The sun shone brightly, casting a golden hue on their joy-filled faces as they cheered for each other, the world around them fading away.

“Look at me! I’m flying!” Lu Xiaoyu shouted, her laughter ringing out as she swung higher and higher.

“Don’t go too high!” Xiaocheng called out, a playful note of mock worry in his voice. “I can’t have you flying off to the moon!”

“Watch me!” Lu Haofei shouted, swinging with all his might, his face filled with exhilaration.

Haoyu’s heart swelled with pride and love as he watched his children basking in the sunlight, their laughter like music to his ears. He turned to Xiaocheng, who was also captivated by the moment.

“Can you believe how fast they’re growing?” Haoyu said, his voice a mix of nostalgia and joy.

Xiaocheng nodded, a soft smile gracing his lips. “Every day is a reminder of how lucky we are,” he replied, wrapping an arm around Haoyu’s shoulders, pulling him close.

As the swings came to a stop, the kids jumped off, their cheeks flushed with excitement. “What’s next?” Lu Xiaohu asked, bouncing on his feet.

“Let’s have our picnic!” Haoyu suggested, leading them to a grassy patch beneath a large tree, providing plenty of shade.

They spread out the picnic blanket and settled down, unpacking their delicious lunch. The sight of their little family gathered together, sharing food and laughter, filled Haoyu with warmth.

“Who wants a sandwich?” he asked, handing out the carefully made snacks, his heart full as he watched the kids eagerly devour their meals.

“I do! I do!” Lu Xiaoyu squealed, taking her sandwich with glee.

“Don’t forget the juice!” Lu Haofei reminded, reaching for a juice box with determination.

They ate and played games, enjoying the carefree atmosphere of the park. After lunch, they rolled out a colorful blanket and brought out a couple of board games.

“Let’s play ‘Candy Land’!” Lu Haofei suggested, his eyes sparkling with enthusiasm.

“Yeah! I want to win!” Lu Xiaohu exclaimed, his competitive spirit shining through.

As they played, the air filled with laughter and playful banter, and the afternoon sun cast a golden glow around them. Haoyu couldn’t help but feel grateful for these moments, a sense of peace wrapping around him as they played together, the bond between them strengthening with every laugh and cheer.

“Papa, I won!” Lu Xiaoyu exclaimed, jumping up with excitement as she placed her game piece on the last square.

“Great job, Xiaoyu!” Haoyu cheered, pulling her into a tight hug. “You played brilliantly!”

“Next time, I’m going to win!” Lu Haofei declared, his competitive spirit not dampened in the least.

“We’ll see about that!” Xiaocheng laughed, ruffling his son’s hair playfully.

After the game, they decided to explore the playground, the kids darting off to the slides and climbing frames while Haoyu and Xiaocheng followed closely, enjoying their children’s laughter and the joy radiating from them.

“Come on, Dad! Slide with me!” Lu Haofei called out, climbing up the steps of the slide with excitement.

Haoyu exchanged a glance with Xiaocheng, who nodded in encouragement. “Alright, let’s do it!” Haoyu replied, climbing the steps next to his son.

As they reached the top, the world below seemed to blur into a wash of colors and laughter. “Ready? On the count of three!” Haoyu said, a grin plastered on his face.

“One, two, three!” they shouted together, and with that, they pushed off, sliding down together, the rush of wind filling their laughter.

“Whee!” Lu Haofei shouted, exhilaration lighting up his face.

They landed in a pile of giggles at the bottom, and Lu Xiaohu hurried over, climbing on top of Haoyu and laughing uncontrollably. “Again, again!” he cried, his cheeks flushed with excitement.

“Alright, let’s go again!” Haoyu chuckled, picking up Lu Xiaohu and racing back to the slide, his heart brimming with joy at the sight of their uncontainable excitement.

After several rounds of sliding, climbing, and running, they finally plopped down onto the picnic blanket, breathless and happy. The sun was starting to dip lower in the sky, casting a warm glow around them.

“Today was the best day ever!” Lu Xiaoyu exclaimed, flopping back on the blanket with a satisfied sigh.

“I agree,” Haoyu said, his heart swelling with contentment. He looked at Xiaocheng, who met his gaze with a smile filled with love. “These moments are what it’s all about.”

Xiaocheng nodded, reaching over to intertwine his fingers with Haoyu’s. “I wouldn’t trade this for anything,” he replied softly, the warmth of their connection radiating through him.

As the sun began to set, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink, they sat together, basking in the love and joy that filled the air.

“Let’s come back to the park next weekend,” Haoyu suggested, his heart full.

“Definitely,” Xiaocheng agreed, giving Haoyu’s hand a gentle squeeze. “We should make it a family tradition.”

“Family traditions!” Lu Haofei cheered, bouncing up from the blanket, his excitement contagious. “I want to have a picnic every week!”

“Me too!” Lu Xiaohu added, his eyes shining brightly.

“I’ll help you make the sandwiches!” Lu Xiaoyu declared, her enthusiasm infectious.

Haoyu laughed, feeling grateful for the family they had built together. “Then it’s settled! We’ll have a picnic every weekend!”

As they packed up their things and made their way home, Haoyu felt a sense of fulfillment wash over him. The day had been filled with laughter, love, and memories that would last a lifetime. In that moment, he knew that as long as they were together, every day could be filled with such joy.

After the park, they returned home, tired but happy. The kids, exhausted from their adventures, settled down for a nap, and Haoyu found himself alone with Xiaocheng. They curled up together on the couch, the warmth of their bodies pressed close, and Haoyu rested his head on Xiaocheng’s shoulder, content to simply be.

In the quiet of the moment, Xiaocheng’s hand found his, and Haoyu squeezed it gently, a silent exchange of love and gratitude. He knew that life was full of uncertainties, that their journey had been far from easy, but here, in this moment, he felt an overwhelming sense of peace.

As they lay there, he felt Xiaocheng’s lips press a soft kiss to his forehead, a gesture so simple yet so full of meaning. Haoyu closed his eyes, letting himself sink into the warmth of it, the depth of Xiaocheng’s love washing over him like a gentle tide.

He had everything he could ever want—love, family, happiness—and he would hold onto it with all his heart, cherishing each moment, each memory, knowing that they had built something beautiful together. And as he let himself be comfortable in his husband's arms, comforted by the quiet hum of their home, he felt a profound sense of gratitude, for Xiaocheng, for their children, for the life they had built.

Because, in the end, that was what mattered most: the love they shared, the family they had created, the home they had made together. And Haoyu knew, with a certainty that went beyond words, that he would hold onto this happiness, no matter what the future held.

For now, he was here, surrounded by love, and that was enough.

The house was finally quiet, a rare occurrence when three young children lived under the same roof. The twins had gone to bed with their favorite stuffed animals clutched in their arms, and Haofei had settled in soon after, exhausted from the day’s adventures. Haoyu closed the door to their room with a gentle click, exhaling as the silence washed over him.

He headed back to the living room, where Xiaocheng was sitting on the couch, a glass of red wine in hand. He had turned on the soft glow of a lamp, and the room was bathed in warm light, shadows dancing across the walls. Xiaocheng looked up as Haoyu entered, a small smile gracing his lips, his eyes soft and inviting.

“Finally, some time for just us,” Xiaocheng murmured, reaching out a hand as Haoyu approached. Haoyu took it, feeling the warmth of Xiaocheng’s fingers as they intertwined with his own.

“Feels like we hardly get these moments anymore,” Haoyu replied, settling beside him. He leaned into Xiaocheng, resting his head on his shoulder, breathing in the familiar scent of him—a comforting blend of cedarwood and something uniquely Xiaocheng. It felt like home.

Xiaocheng took a sip of his wine, then handed the glass to Haoyu, who accepted it gratefully. He took a slow sip, savoring the rich, velvety taste as it spread warmth through him. They didn’t need words right now; their presence alone was enough, a quiet reassurance that they were here together, in the space they had created, with the life they had built.

After a while, Xiaocheng shifted, gently pulling Haoyu closer. Haoyu responded, nestling into him, their bodies fitting together in a way that was both familiar and comforting. Xiaocheng wrapped an arm around him, his fingers tracing gentle patterns along Haoyu’s arm, a soothing rhythm that calmed him.

“You know,” Xiaocheng began softly, his voice breaking the comfortable silence, “I don’t think I’ve ever been this happy.” He tilted his head down, looking at Haoyu with a tenderness that made Haoyu’s heart flutter.

Haoyu turned slightly to meet Xiaocheng’s gaze, his eyes reflecting the love he felt but rarely spoke aloud. “Is that so?” he asked, a playful smile tugging at the corners of his lips.

Xiaocheng nodded, his expression earnest. “It’s true. Every day, I wake up and see you beside me, and I think to myself, ‘How did I get so lucky?’” He reached up, brushing a strand of hair from Haoyu’s face, his fingers lingering for a moment. “You’re everything to me, Haoyu.”

Haoyu’s cheeks flushed, and he looked away, a little embarrassed by the intensity of Xiaocheng’s words. But Xiaocheng, sensing his discomfort, merely chuckled and pulled him closer, his arms wrapping around him in a gentle embrace.

“I mean it,” Xiaocheng continued, his voice a soft murmur against Haoyu’s ear. “I know I don’t say it enough, but you’re my world. I wouldn’t be who I am without you. You’ve given me everything I’ve ever wanted—our home, our children, our life together.” He paused, his gaze far away for a moment, as if reflecting on the journey they had shared. “Sometimes, I think back to before we had all this, and I can’t even imagine going back. You’re my home, Haoyu. Wherever you are, that’s where I belong.”

Haoyu felt his heart swell with emotion, his chest tight with the love he held for Xiaocheng. He leaned up, brushing his lips against Xiaocheng’s in a soft, lingering kiss, one that spoke of the years they had shared, the memories they had created, the future they still had ahead of them.

When they pulled apart, Haoyu rested his forehead against Xiaocheng’s, their breaths mingling in the quiet space between them. “You know,” he began, his voice barely more than a whisper, “I feel the same way. You’ve always been my anchor, the one who keeps me grounded.” He reached up, cupping Xiaocheng’s face with gentle hands. “I don’t know what I’d do without you. You’ve given me everything, Xiaocheng. I feel like the luckiest person in the world just to be here with you.”

Xiaocheng’s eyes softened, and he leaned into Haoyu’s touch, closing his eyes as if savoring the moment. “Then promise me we’ll always be like this,” he whispered. “No matter what happens, no matter where life takes us, we’ll always have each other.”

Haoyu nodded, his heart aching with the depth of his love for this man. “I promise,” he replied, his voice steady, filled with conviction. “No matter what, I’m here. Always.”

They sat together like that for a long time, their arms wrapped around each other, their hearts beating in sync. Haoyu felt a profound sense of peace wash over him, a comforting reassurance that, despite the uncertainties of life, he had Xiaocheng by his side. Together, they could face anything.

Eventually, Xiaocheng shifted, reaching for the wine glass again. He took another sip, then handed it back to Haoyu, who accepted it with a smile. They drank in silence, their thoughts entwined, their connection unspoken but deeply felt.

When the glass was empty, Xiaocheng leaned back, pulling Haoyu with him so they lay together on the couch, their bodies tangled in a comforting embrace. Haoyu rested his head on Xiaocheng’s chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat, a familiar sound that never failed to calm him.
