chapter 4 - the contact
Third person point of view...
Eleven had wandered that day. From Mike's house, to Will's house, and even back to the school. She only took the routes she knew, afraid that if she took another way, she would get lost, hurt, or maybe even encounter a beast like the one she had seen the day before.
Of course, it was the next day and she had stayed the night in the school. She had only went into the first hallway. She refused to go in any further. The main reason why she had went back to the school was to get some more pudding, the pudding being her only source of food that she easily knew how to find.
After Eleven had gone to get the pudding, she left the building once again, reassured to venture.
Eleven did not really know what she was doing. She was in a place like home. Same places, houses, and even the same weather, but there wasn't a single human soul to be found at all. Only creatures, as Eleven knew them. Animals.
She knew that she needed to find a way to contact someone, anyone to help get her out of wherever she was. She wanted to go home. She especially wanted Mike. Mike was the closest friend she had ever known. He was more than what Lucas and Dustin were to her. She did not quite understand how that was, but she knew that that was certainly a fact.
Eleven suddenly stopped in her tracks as she heard a weird sound around the place she was walking. It wasn't a friendly sound. She looked to her right. Far off in the distance, she saw two creatures that looked identical to each other walking in circles, hissing and reaching out towards each other. Eleven knew she had to get away. Somehow, she had to get through the woods and back to a house she knew. This is when she realized that she was safest inside, away from all of the creatures.
The animals that Eleven saw this time were jaguars, however, baby ones. To her, though, they still looked terrifying, especially being she didn't understand that this was their way of play, even though it still seemed frightening and harmful.
Eleven had ran away into the woods. The same woods that she had walked with Mike and her other friends, as well as the one she had walked through yesterday. "Mike. Home," said Eleven. She wanted to go back home, and maybe there, she could find a way to talk to someone from home.
As she was walking, El heard noises from above. They were silly noises that made her smile. When she looked up, she saw four of the same animals interacting and swinging in the trees. They were monkeys, but of course, how would El know that? El slowly walked away, her gaze still up at the monkeys, being she was amused with their activity. El decided that she liked those creatures.
She continued down the trail and eventually made it out of the woods. She was around the area of Will's house now. If she'd take the next trail she saw a little bit away, it would lead her to an area close to Mike's house. She smiled at the thought and continued to walk again, until she heard a loud noise that she didn't know how to explain to herself.
The noise she heard was the loud roar of a grizzly bear, standing about thirty feet behind her. Eleven turned around to look at what she heard. The bear was looking directly at her. It gave another roared and El shed a tear, scared and not knowing what to do.
The bear decided to slowly walk toward her. It was a warning to back away from it. Eleven stayed, though, frozen in her place. The bear continued to make it's way to Eleven. Realizing it wasn't going to stop, she started to run away in fear of the creature trying to attack her. Eleven ran all the way to Will's house and never once looked back.
Once she had made her way inside of the small house, she did what she had done the day before when she had entered a house; she had moved a piece of furniture in front of the door so a creature couldn't get in. She did this with the front and the back door of the Byers house.
After she was finally settled inside the house, she sat on the couch and began to cry. Eleven had the feeling that the world was out to get her. Everything bad that could possibly happen in her mind was happening. She was in a place that felt so much like home, but at the same time, felt nothing like home at all. It had all of the familiar places there. Places which Eleven knew. But how could any place feel like home if there was no on there with her? No one there to hug her and tell her everything was going to be fine and that she could get through this awful thing she was going through.
How could it be home with no Mike?
What she was going through right now was because of Mike! She saved him. She saved him, Dustin, Lucas, and everyone else she had come to know and love, and now she's suffering. In order to save the ones she loved, she had to give them up.
After contemplating the events in her head, she had decided that it was all worth it.
Eleven was laying eyes-shut on a counter top behind where the three boys stood. The boys were face to face with the evil creature who took their friend, and for that, they knew that they were going to make it suffer.
They were going to kill it.
However, we must remember that these boys are children, and they were not incredibly calm and organized about how they were going to do this, so they did the only thing that they could do; they panicked.
Dustin and Mike were getting out rocks that they had put inside of their backpacks for this very moment. They gave them to Lucas one by one so he could fire it at the Demogorgon using what he called a 'wrist-rocket,' and just like that, one by one, he shot the rocks at the creature.
Eleven was drained, but hearing what was going on, she knew exactly what she had to do.
She knew that no matter how stubborn these boys were, they were not going to be able to kill this monster. She was the only one who could. Therefore, Eleven worked up all of the power that she could, stood up, and focused all of her power to the beast.
Eleven flung the monster into the wall that it stood in front of. The boys stopped and stared in shock, mainly because at this same time, Lucas had flung a rock that hit the Demogorgon. But then, Eleven walked out in front of the boys and towards the Demogorgon.
This was it.
This wasn't just for Will or Barb or any of the others that the beast had taken. This wasn't for Lucas or Dustin, and no matter how much it was a huge influence in her decision, this wasn't all for Mike, either. The truth was, this was for the whole world. If the Demogorgon dies, there would be no way for another gate to open and no one would ever have to worry about The Upside Down ever again. This would be the end of everything.
"Eleven, stop," Mike exclaimed, but before he could run up and stop her, Eleven flung him into the cabinets behind them. She didn't want to hurt Mike, but she knew she had to.
Eleven had made her way closer and closer to the monster until she was only a few feet in front of it. She looked back at the only three friends she had truly ever known. All of them looking at her in shock and confusion. Oh, how she'd miss them, but this needed to be done.
Eleven then focused all her attention on Mike, and everything in the world slowed down to a stop. They, at that exact moment were making eye contact, and Eleven wondered whether it would be the last time she ever would. She thought about all the moments they shared. From when they first met and he gave her dry clothes and a place to sleep. When he came down to where she slept with food that tasted delicious, especially Eggos. When he had shown her his home and all of the cool things inside of it. Every single moment all the way down to about fifteen minutes ago, when Mike had put his lips on hers. She didn't know what that was or what it was called, but what she did know is that she liked it. When it happened, she felt truly happy. Confused, but happy and loved. And now, its ending.
"Goodbye, Mike," Eleven said, then remembered when she had first slept in his basement and said "Night, Mike," before he went back upstairs to go to bed, himself.
Eleven then turned back to face the monster. She looked at it with hatred. "No more," she said. She extended her arm out towards the beast and used everything she had in her to try to destroy it. It did do it harm, but she knew it wouldn't eventually be enough. That's when she opened her mouth and let out a ferocious scream, and that's when the Demogorgon started to evaporate into nothingness, taking Eleven with it. She was engulfed inside of this huge cloud of debris, and that's the last thing that she could remember before everything went completely black.
She was gone, and she left her three friends there to embrace what had happened.
The thought of all of this only made Eleven more sad and more lonely. She knew she had to get out. She wasn't going to allow herself to be sad and alone for the rest of her existence. She had to do something.
That's when Eleven wiped her tears away and stood up. She walked out into the kitchen and found the refrigerator. She wanted to see if maybe there was something in it that she could use for something, because of course, Eleven didn't know what a refrigerator was. When she pulled on the handle which opened the fridge, she saw a bunch of things that she could eat inside of it! Eleven lightly smiled and took something out of it. It was a container of yogurt.
She took the covering off of the top of the small container and then lifted it up to her nose and smelled it. It smelled nice to El. She then brought it closer to her mouth and licked what was inside of the container. She smiled wider, loving the taste of this new food she discovered. She continued to eat what was left inside of the container as she continued to walk through this house.
Eleven had come to the Byers bathroom. She knew what it was for, so she took her advantage of using it and doing her business. After she washed her hands, she looked up and saw herself in the mirror. The first time she had seen herself since she was in the first world. Her face was dirty, and from what she saw, so were her clothes. But that wasn't all. She had hair! She gasped at the sight and touched the top of her head. She had never had her hair this long before. The only thing that compared to this was when she wore the blonde wig that Mike had given her. But this hair was dark brown, almost black. She knew it was hers, too, but just to be sure, she yanked on her hair. Yep, it was real. Eleven rubbed her head in pain from where her roots were tugged at. Eleven then used the sink to wash her face and then left the bathroom.
Eleven eventually came to the last room which happened to be Will's. When Eleven walked in, she saw a bed and a weird looking machine which she was too scared to try to operate in any way. Eleven looked inside of a drawer that had clothes in it. Eleven remembered how dirty her clothes looked when she looked in the mirror. She looked down and saw indeed how dirty her clothes were. She frowned. "Not pretty."
Eleven refused to stay in her clothes any longer. She had looked through the first drawer and saw nothing that looked or felt good to her. She then went to the second drawer and found clothes that seemed much more comfortable. El smiled in satisfaction as she got some clothes out from the drawer.
In the end, Eleven ended up putting on a red tee shirt with black sweat pants that did in fact belong to Will. Eleven had left the outfit she had been wearing on the floor of the room, not really knowing what else to do with it.
Eleven then walked back into the bathroom and looked at herself. She smiled. "Pretty," she whispered. "Mike thinks I'm pretty," she then said, smiling at old memories. She looked at her hair and started to play with it. She had never gotten to do this before. Her hair was just above shoulder length, but it needed to be combed - not that she knew how.
Eleven returned to Will's room and decided that if she needed to stay here for the whole night, that this is where she would sleep. It'd be more comfortable than sleeping on the cold school floor. El sat down on the bed and giggled when it squished down a bit under her weight. Then she allowed herself to fall backwards onto the bed. She sighed with a smile on her face, loving the relaxing feeling of this. There, Eleven fell asleep for a few hours, and woke up exactly at 3:15pm.
When El woke up, the first thing she did was look outside the window. The sun was lower in the sky than it was before, she noticed. She also saw a group of very small creatures playing with each other in the yard. In El's eyes, they were very cute, and she laughed at their play.
They were mice.
After that, Eleven turned around and was about to walk out the door until she saw something she hadn't noticed when she first came into this room. It was that thing. It's what she used to find Will and listen to him while he was in The Upside Down!
She found the intercom.
El grabbed it as fast as she could and sat back down on the bed. She instantly started to tune it and try to get it to reach someone, somehow. She had pulled the antenna out (something she had seen Mike do when working this thing) after a while of not getting any signal. She had kept tuning and messing around with different buttons until she finally reached a station that came out clear.
This is when her memory would have to suit her.
She had to find the correct button to press so whoever was on the other side could hear her.
She picked a button and brought the device up to her mouth. "Hello..?" She asked into it. There was no answer. She tried it again. "Hello?" There was a short delay before Eleven heard a voice.
"Hello? Who is this?"
"...M-Mike?"
"Eleven?!"
