Part 8 ~ Making Our Way To The Palace
Gajeel's POV
Shrimp and I were running down the fire escape.
"Gajeel, be careful. There are things which you can hit your head on!"
"Mind yourself as well then!"
"Gajeel." Levy stopped and had a bored expression on her face. "I'm tiny. I don't have any problems aside from getting away from the zombies."
"Oh so -," I was interrupted by hitting my head on a metal pipe which decided 'you know what? I'm just going to stick off of the building, just for laughs.' "That hurt."
"Told you." Shrimp smirked, waltzing past me as I rubbed my head.
She got to the end of the stairs and beckoned me over. "Shit just got real Gajeel."
I saw what she meant. A huge cluster of them were below us, oblivious to our presence but still causing a problem. We couldn't get down.
"Climb in that window there Shrimp." I said, pointing to the window beside her.
She looked in, then shook her head violently. "You don't want to go in there, or even look in there right now." Me being the idiot I was back then decided to look in the window.
I guess somebody didn't cover themselves in enough zombie guts.
Who was it? Well...
"Gajeel! I have an idea!" Levy whisper squealed. She picked up a metal pipe which had fallen from the wall and threw it as far as she could. It created a huge sound and the zombies were attracted to it. The cluster slowly but surely made their way over to the sound, allowing Levy and I to jump off from the fire escape and get away.
I scraped my arm on the wall whilst jumping, but it wasn't a problem.
I took the sleeve of my t-shirt, ripped it off and tied it around the cut.
"You ready? The palace is over this way." Levy said quietly, standing beside another alleyway. "Shortcut."
I nodded then acted like a zombie and walked over to her. There weren't as many zombies now that the cluster had gone, only us and maybe ten more.
The cluster had like thirty.
Just before I got to her, my right foot wouldn't budge, when I looked down to see what had happened I was mortified to see a legless zombie about to bite at my ankle.
"Fuck!" I whispered. "I thought I was covered in their guts!!" I tried to kick it off but it's grip was tight.
"Gajeel!" Shrimp quietly cried.
All of a sudden, the zombie let go of my leg and fell face down onto the concrete.
"Good going Shrimp."
"That wasn't me."
Two figures jumped down from a ledge presumably and landed in front of me, throwing what looked like nina stars at all of the zombies heads.
"Go." A female voice instructed. "We'll meet you at the end of the alleyway okay?"
I nodded and ran towards Levy.
"Who were they?!" She asked.
"I don't know, someone from Fairy Tail I guess." We got to the end of the alleyway and by the time we'd got there, the two ninja Fairy Tail people had caught up with us.
"That was close Jellal." The girl took off her ninja mask and was revealed to be the red-head I saw on my first week, Erza Scarlet.
"Yeah, you can say that again." Jellal answered back, taking off his mask.
"Thanks for back there." Levy smiled, catching the two off guard.
"McGarden? You're smiling?" Jellal said, dumbstruck.
Erza elbowed him in the stomach and shook her head. "What shook you up Levy? You seem... excuse this but, normal again."
"Jet."
"I'm sorry. How?"
"He was killed, I'm not sure how."
I pain in my heart threatened to tell her the truth. She even looked at me with her big brown eyes, practically begging me to confess what I knew.
"It's been hard on her, so I'm looking our for her." I put my hand on her petite shoulder, and surprisingly she didn't flinch. In fact, she leaned into me so my arm was actually around her instead of just on her shoulder.
Erza nodded. "You guys managing on your own then? Or do you want us to stick around?"
"You guys should stick around." Shrimp said. "If it wasn't for you back there, Gajeel would've been bit."
"Yeah, thanks." I grinned.
"Okay then. We'll try to meet up with Lucy too, she wanted to talk to me about something earlier." Erza added.
"Do you want to tell me when you find out? Lu-chan isn't herself." Shrimp asked.
"Uh, sure. If you're acting and feeling like the Levy McGarden from Fairy Tail High school, my best nerd, then you should know your best friends problems." Erza smiled.
Levy said something under her breath then smiled and said louder. "We need to cover ourselves in the zombie blood again, we were almost caught." Erza nodded and snuck up behind a zombie and took it down. she then dragged it back to is and let Shrimp and I re-cover ourselves.
"You guys covered?" Jellal asked.
I nodded but winced when I realised something. My cut could get infected, so I looked at it again and cleaned the area around it.
"You okay Gajeel?" Erza asked.
"Yeah I'm fine." I replied.
"Okay then, let's make our way to the palace."
We walked in silence as we passed the other zombies. They continued to ignore us even when Jellal almost tripped up over a small rock.
Yes, a small rock.
'I'm okay.' He mouth to Erza, who gave a small sigh of relief. I checked on Levy who was staring off into the distance, as if she was lost in thought.
Erza gave the motion for us to go, so we followed her.
----------
"The palace is just another few blocks away." Jellal whispered, passing a couple of zombies who were holding hands.
I looked closely at the hands of the zombies and realised that before they 'turned' they must've been married. This world, the living hell, was ruining things like marriage.
I was poked on the stomach for a while before I realised that Shrimp was poking me and beckoning me forwards. I followed and realised that I could hear heavy footsteps which didn't belong to anybody in out group.
"Guys, I hear someone."
We leaned against nearby walls and waited to see who was running.
"Luce!! This way, quick!"
"Natsu! Wait!"
The two turned and came rushing into our alleyway. Both of them were gasping for air, then they saw us and realised something.
"Crap, their guts came off of us."
"How did that happen?" Erza asked, then she looked at their hair and sighed. "You went into the river didn't you."
"They can't swim and the river leads right here! It was a great idea at the time!" Natsu argued.
"Guys...."
"Hush Levy, we're talking about important matters. Lucy could have died Natsu!"
"But she didn't!"
"Guys!" Levy said a bit louder. "They need to recover themselves. Because," she pointed to the end of the alleyway to the small group of 6 or 7 zombies. I made my way towards them and got around the back, then I took out the small axe from my weapons belt and axed the neck of the closest zombie. It fell down and crumpled in a disgusting pile.
Levy, Jellal and Erza took care of some others. Even Lucy took a small throwing knife and threw it so that it landed between another zombies eyes.
"Nice throw Luce!" Natsu grinned.
Lucy smiled back and took out another zombie.
Soon, the zombies were down and Natsu and Lucy were able to recover themselves in the zombie guts. We were about to make our way to the palace when Erza stopped Lucy and spoke quietly to her. Lucy started to shake slightly, then shook her head and continued to walk.
-------------
Levy's POV
I approached Erza after Lucy had walked away.
"Is Lu-Chan okay? She seems upset."
"She said that she'll talk to me when we get to the palace, and I'm sorry Levy but she doesn't want you to know. I don't know why, maybe you should confront her about it." Erza said, "come on, we should get going if we want to get there by sunset."
She walked away.
I clenched my fists.
All I wanted was to hear Lucy admit to what Juvia did. So I can have more proof to hate her.
...
What was I becoming?
One part of me hated Lucy, Erza and Juvia. They intended to keep me in the dark possibly forever about what happened to Jet, my bestest friend in the world.
And Gajeel....
But another part of me wanted to become best friends with Lucy and Erza again, and become Juvias new friend.
And possibly Gajeel's.....
I was tainted with darkness.
I pulled down my sock and gasped at the infected wound.
They won't know.
They won't know,
Please....
They won't know.
