Chapter Seven: Apples
The next day, I woke up with a bit of a headache. "Ow... What the hell happened last night?" I asked as I sat up with a hand over my head. "Right before you went to bed, you had a bit of scotch." Rem said. "I did? Oh, that's right." I said, remembering.
I remember right after Aunt Chie went to bed, after we had pizza for dinner, I quickly took a sip of Aunt Chie's scotch that she keeps hidden in the armoire bar cabinet. "Never let me drink something like that again." I said.
"We warned you not to drink it in the first place." Gook pointed out. "Hey, I was curious to what it taste like, alright?" I defended. "Whatever helps you sleep at night." He said, rolling his eyes. "Obviously, that scotch didn't help her sleep at night." Ryuk joked.
"Haha, very funny, Ryuk." I said, sarcastically. I got out of bed and headed into the kitchen. "Where's Calikarcha?" I asked Gook.
"He's in the living room. He hasn't really said anything at all last night. Well, actually... He did ask how well we trust you, and I told him that we trust you a lot. In fact, we look up to you." Gook explained. "Aww, that's sweet, Gook." I said as I walked down the stairs. "Aunt Chie?" I called. I saw a note on the fridge and went over to it.
The note read: "Left for work early, but made you some pancakes. They're in the fridge. Enjoy your day. Love, Aunt Chie."
"Yum. Pancakes." I said. "Ow!" I held my head with one hand as I started to get a headache. "We told you not to drink that scotch." Gook reminded me. "Oh, put a sock in it, Gook." I said, making Ryuk laugh.
I looked over towards the living room and spotted Calikarcha sitting on the couch. I went over to him and sat on the coffee table so I was facing him. "Hey, Calikarcha. How's it going?" I asked him. "Okay, I guess." He answered, a bit shyly.
"That's good. Look, I know it's feels a little awkward being here when everything's new to you, but it's really not that bad here. I guarantee you that you'll make a ton of friends here." I comforted him with a smile. He looked at me and he smiled back. "Thanks, Ryoko." He said, quietly.
I smiled again and placed my hand over his skeletal hand. The doorbell rung, so I went to the door to answer it. When I opened it, there was a mailman with a basket of apples in his arms. "Yes?" I answered.
"Package for... Chie Makoto?" He said, checking the name of the package to be sure he had the right address. "That's my aunt. I'll make sure she gets it." I said, and he handed me the basket. "Thank you." I said. He smiled at me before leaving the property.
"A gift from a secret admirer?" Rem asked. "I guess so. There's card here that says, "From your biggest fan,". I didn't know fans send gifts." I said as I set the basket on the counter. I turned my back for a second and I heard unwrapping, then loud munching.
I turned around and found Ryuk eating an apple from the basket. "Ryuk!" He looked at me with a 'What did I do?' look. "I turn my back for one second and you're already eating my aunt's apples?!" I said. "Mm... Pretty much." Ryuk said, casually, before eating another apple.
I sighed. "You could've told me you liked apples, Ryuk." I said as he took another apple and ate it. "Stop eating the apples, will ya? If you want, I can go to the store and buy you some apples." I offered. "You want us to come with you?" Rem asked.
"No, that's okay. I need you guys to stay here and look after Calikarcha." I said. "Will do." Gook said. I headed up to my room and got my wallet before heading back down and out the door. "Make sure Ryuk doesn't eat all those apples!" I called before closing the door.
I locked the door with my key, then walked down the street. The store wasn't that far and it was only a ten minute walk.
Once I was at the store, I walked around, trying to find the apples. As I was looking around, I accidentally bumped into someone, making them drop their basket. "Oh, I'm so sorry." I said. I quickly bent down and began picking up their merchandise.
"Hey, don't sweat it. It was an accident." The man said as he kneeled down in front of me. I looked at him and noticed it was Light Yagami from preschool. "Again, I'm very sorry." I said. "It's no big deal. Hey, you look familiar. Have we met somewhere before?" He asked. "Yeah, we have, actually. I'm Ryoko Taizumi. We were in preschool together." I said.
"Oh, yeah. I remember you. How ya been?"
"Oh, you know. I've been hanging in there. Um, I'm looking for some apples. Do you know where I might be able to find them?"
"Aisle 9."
"Thanks for your help. Again, I'm sorry for bumping into you." I said. I gave a small wave before heading to Aisle 9.
Once I found the Aisle, I grabbed 3 bags of apples, then headed to the cashier. After I paid for them, I headed home.
"Guys, I'm home! Sorry it took me so long!" I called. "Who are you talking to, Ryoko?" I heard my aunt's voice. I quickly ran into the kitchen as she was undoing her hair. "Aunt Chie! You're home early!" I said, surprised.
"Yeah, they let m go early. Not much to talk about today, but I'm supposed to be going back there tonight. Which means I'm gonna be a little late going to work tonight." She explained. "Sounds rough." I mentioned, setting the bag of apples on the counter.
"So, who were you talking to?" Aunt Chie asked. "Huh? Oh! You mean from when I came into the door! I was, uh... just talking to... a friend! I was talking to a friend! I guess she left while I was at the store." I lied. "Oh. Okay, then. Hey, looks like someone got a present." Aunt Chie said, noticing the basket.
"Yeah. It was sent for you from a fan of yours." I said. "Looks like you already got into it. Guess you couldn't help yourself, huh?" She joked. "Yeah... Uh, I'm gonna head upstairs." I said. I quickly snatched a bag of apples and quickly went to my room shutting the door.
I released a deep sigh from my throat while sliding down my door until I was sitting down, hugging the back of apples to my chest. "That was close." I said. "Almost revealed us for a sec there, didn't cha, Ryoko?" Ryuk joked. I looked at him with a frown before a laugh escaped my throat.
"Yeah, that was a close one alright." I said.
Later in my room, I was drawing again while my desk lamp was on; the only light that was on. I preferred to be in the dark most of the day. Don't ask me why. While I was drawing, Rem and Gook were downstairs with Calikarcha, giving him some company.
As for Ryuk, he was lying on my bed, eating the bag of apples I bought for him. "Hey, Ryoko." Ryuk said. "Yes?" I answered as I continued to work.
"Knock, knock."
"Who's there?"
"Apples."
I raised a brow. "Apples who?"
"Apples are really tasty."
I raised a brow again. "That was a bad joke." I said. "I never said I was good at jokes." He mentioned. I chuckled. "No, you didn't." I confirmed.
