prologue.

Elena Reyes was quite possibly going insane. Like clinically insane.

If you told her six months ago that she was going to sacrifice herself for a magic rock, only to be resurrected by an Egyptian god that only she could see....well she would probably believe you.

However, she would still be shocked.

Elena Reyes remaining alive was what her best friend would call a cosmic fluke. That was if he was still alive.

Now here she stood in the kitchen of her ex-girlfriend's apartment. About to be sent on her first official post-death mission.

Undercover of course, as not only was the world unaware of her being alive...so was her family. Elena had planned to reach out, she really did.

But it was unnecessarily difficult, how could she tell the people she loved that she was still alive?

A strand of her very fried, bleached blonde hair fell into her face.

"So...are you going to tell me what you're really doing here?" Amelia asked, her hands wrapped around a warm coffee mug.

"It's kind of a long story, Mia..." Elena trailed off.

What was she supposed to say? The Egyptian that only she could see was done training her and was about to send her on her first mission?

"Well, I would say," the blonde stated, "You know, since you died. Maybe I have a brain tumor and you're not actually here."

"I mean," Elena started, "I can't confirm that you don't have a brain tumor but I am actually here. I'll be gone in a couple of days, I just needed a place to lay low."

Amelia's eyes flickered down to the chain that hung from her ex's neck, "Why didn't you go to her?"

Elena absentmindedly touched the ring, "I...I needed to be in New York."

"Ok, so let me get this straight," Amelia started, "You sacrificed yourself for the good of the world, yet you're still alive and in New York to what exactly?"

"Save it again?" Elena stated, but it sounded more like a question.

"What's the threat this time? Things have been abnormally peaceful."

Before Elena could respond the loud sound of tires screeching just outside the door cut her off.

"That's my queue." Elena nodded, tugging the baseball cap back over her bleached hair, and moving toward the door.

Light glowed at the tips of Elena's fingers as she exited the building, moving against the crowd of people that ran down the sidewalk.

A soft gasp escaped her lips as she spotted Stephen Strange. Elena understood of course, that everyone was brought back when Tony gave his own life, but it was a whole other experience seeing someone you watched fade into dust stand only a few feet away.

Stephen unveiled the creature that terrorizing New York and Elena shook her head, "This still isn't my department. Where's the Avengers when you need them."

That's when Elena spotted the young girl, holding on for dear life inside of the bus that Stephen had pulled apart.

Elena's hands formed a shield of light, and she sent it flying just below the girl, "It's okay, you can let go!" She called out.

Which briefly pulled Stephen's attention to her. Elena couldn't tell if her recognized her or not, but that didn't exactly matter right now.

She moved up next to Stephen not initiating any conversation with the man. Elena slid the shield of light that held the girl over next to the two of them.

"Do I know you?"

"Nope." The two girls both answered simultaneously.

One of the monster tentacles whacked Stephen, sending him flying into a nearby shop window.

Elena and the younger girl shared a look, "Run! Go!" Elena urged her.

Her cap flew off her head as the two of them took off running. Of course, it would be illogical for Elena to expect that they could escape the monster.

A shrill scream escaped Elena's lips as one of the tentacles wrapped around her. She forced light from her hands forming a golden sword.

"That's a new one," she muttered, slamming it against the monster's tentacle which of course lead her to be free falling.

That was until some sort of sparkly wire wrapped around her tugging both she and the girl away from the monster.

"Wong, you are so invited to my wedding if it ever happens," she breathed.

The man's eyes grew wide, "Elena?"

"Shit," she muttered, "Oh look monster," the brunette pointed at the growling creature successfully removing the attention from herself.

Elena pulled the girl behind her, watching as Wong fought against the monster.

"Any ideas?" Elena glanced over her shoulder at the girl, but she just sort of stood there, looking entirely freaked out.

Strange's cape came tearing through the air and wrapped around the two of them, flying them out of the monster's reach.

The young girl next to her screamed as a motorcycle flew by them causing them to fall onto a cement edge.

"Hey, look at me," Elena instructed, and the girl's eyes tore away from the monster crawling up towards them, "I won't let you fall. I promise, but I need you to come a tiny bit closer to me, ok?"

The girl scooted back, closer to Elena as the monster was busy trying to shake off Stephen and Wong.

Wong went falling, and Stephen got captured by the monster.

The Cape flew over the monster's eye blocking its vision while Stephen got ready to attack. Stephen sent a light post directly into the monster's eye successfully ending its life.

"Ew," Elena's nose scrunched up.

Stephen floated up to the two of them opening a portal.

"You ok?" Elena asked the girl, and she gave her a simple nod.

They stepped through the portal, and Wong stood in front of them.

He nodded in the young girl's direction, "Who's this?"

"Yeah, I was gonna ask the same question." Stephen stated.

The girl was ready to take off when Stephen grabbed her arm, "Hey kid, what did that creature want with you?"

"Where are your parents?" Wong added, but his eyes momentarily left her, catching on to Elena.

Which distracted him just enough for the girl to take off.

"She took my Slingie." Stephen frowned, and Wong snickered, "She took your slingie."

"I don't know what that is," Elena stated, "But she definitely took it."

"Elena?" Stephen seemed to catch on to what Wong had earlier.

"Uh—eh—Who?" Elena stammered, "I don't know any Elenas. You should probably go get your slinky back."

She attempted to divert their attention, and Stephen rolled his eyes, "Slingie." he corrected.

Elena thought she was safe, as she rounded the next corner.

However, a portal opened up in front of her, "She'll only talk to you."

Elena frowned, "Stupid sparkly things."

"It's a portal." Stephen shook his head.

"Whatever," she sighed, "Look, I don't know who you think I am, but I certainly do not know you—"

"Elena drop the act," Stephen interrupted, "The hair isn't fooling anyone."
