Destruction

Sirens were blaring throughout the Los Alamos laboratory. Multiple physicists were rushing through the lab trying to gather things up.

In one room J. Robert Oppenheimer was frantically putting certain papers in a jet black briefcase which was placed on a steel counter. Suddenly he heard rapid footsteps echoing throughout the hallway and approaching the room he is in.

A young man with short and messy jet black hair, azure blue eyes and freckles on his cheeks entered the room. His gray tie wasn't straight, white shirt was wrinkly clearly forgotten to be ironed, gray suit jacket was unbuttoned, he was wearing black pants instead of the ones matching his suit and his cinnamon brown shoes were polished to a point where you could almost see your reflection in them.

"Oppie?" the young man asked with his voice trembling slightly.

"What is it Dr. Goff?" Oppenheimer asked.

"There's a problem," Dr. Goff replied anxiously.

"What is the–"

Suddenly gunshots tore through the windows in the hallway sending tiny pieces of glass onto the linoleum floor. Screams and gunshots echoed throughout the hallway. Dr. Lloyd Goff hastily shut the white heavy door and locked it. Slightly muffling the sounds of terror outside the room.

Oppenheimer hurriedly wandered over to a wooden desk and started opening drawers. Rummaging through the drawers he picked up multiple documents and placed them on the desk. Feeling the roughness and slight coolness of the paper on his hands.

Lloyd felt his heart thumping hard in his chest. His breathing started becoming shallow and uneven. Gazing at Oppenheimer he noticed that his face was pallid, hands were trembling and his eyes were wide like an owls.

"Dr. Oppenheimer we need to get out of here!" he said his voice cracking slightly.

"We can't leave yet. I need to get the information out of here," he replied trying to remain calm.

"If we don't get out of here we will most likely be killed!" he said. "Do you want to die here Oppie!?"

"I don't want to die here Lloyd. But I won't allow what I created to kill more people in this world," he replied with a tinge of guilt.

Oppenheimer stopped rummaging through the drawers and closed them. Grabbing the small stack of documents he then wandered over to the briefcase he crammed the documents into it. Shutting the briefcase he paused and took a deep breath trying to settle his rapid heart beat. Placing his hand in one of his black suit jacket pockets he wrapped it around a small light cardboard box. Pulling it out of his pocket and opening it up he grabbed a cigarette.

Placing the cigarette in his mouth Oppenheimer turned to look at Lloyd who's eyes were starting to fill with tears. Putting the pack of cigarettes back into his suit pocket. Grabbing a small silver lighter out of his other pocket he then took the cap off. Flicking the switch on the lighter a couple of times it finally lit. Then he lit his cigarette. Closing his lighter and placing it in his pocket he grabbed the handle of the briefcase feeling weight of it and it was heavy much like his conscience. Walking back over to the desk he took the cigarette out of his mouth and put it in a small metal ashtray on the desk.

Cautiously walking over to the door. Oppenheimer went to place his hand on the metal door handle. But Llyod immediately seized his hand and firmly held it. Oppenheimer stared into Lloyds eyes and noticed the fear in them as if he just saw something truly horrifying. Tears slowly ran down Llyods speckled cheeks like dew rolling off the edges of leaves.

"I will not allow you to go out there Oppie..." he said with despair and dread in his voice. "I don't want you to die. After everything that has happened in the past ten years. You are the only person I can look up to."

The look in Oppenheimers eyes softened and he smiled slightly.

"I understand that you are afraid Lloyd. But we have to protect our research," he said softly trying to reassure Llyod. "The sake of the world depends on it."

Lloyd silently nods then he let go of Oppenheimers hand. Wiping his tears away Llyod then gave Oppenheimer a small smile.

Oppenheimer unlocked the door and slowly but cautiously opened it. Upon opening the door he noticed that the gunshots had stopped and all he could hear was the emergency alarm and the sounds of people whimpering and crying out of fear. Glass shards covered the floor of the hallway and the warm desert air flowed through the shattered windows. The glass shards glinted in the sunlight shining through the shattered windows.

Cautiously Oppenheimer walked out into the hallway the sound of glass crunching underneath his shoes. Lloyd anxiously followed behind Oppenheimer his gaze flitting around scanning the hallways for any intruders. Suddenly a gunshot hit the wall behind them. Lloyd immediately gripped Oppenheimers arm and dragged him onto the floor with him.

"Why are they doing this to us?" Lloyd asked.

"They want the information I have Lloyd," Oppenheimer replied. "Possibly they even might want me."

"Well why didn't you leave during the day of the evacuation Oppie?" he asked with concern. "Do you have a death wish?"

"I am trying to protect the world from my creation Lloyd," he replied trying to hide the guilt in his voice. "It has already caused enough destruction I won't allow it to cause more."

Lloyd and Oppenheimer began to carefully crawl down the hallway. Upon getting close to another room they both heard the sound of rustling papers and incoherent and frustrated muttering. Lloyd cautiously crawled towards the open door and peered into the room. Staring at a man who was looking at a pile of documents he eventually recognized the man.

Lloyd quickly got off the floor and raced into the room. Oppenheimer got off the floor and followed Lloyd. Upon reaching the doorway he paused and his eyes widened with shock. Lloyd had the man pinned up against the solid white concrete wall.

"I know what your trying to do you traitor," Lloyd said as he gripped the collar of the mans brown suit. "I knew that something was off with you Klaus."

"I'm not trying to do anything Dr. Goff," Klaus Fuchs replied sternly. "You paranoid son of a bitch."

Klaus Fuchs then glanced over at Oppenheimer and he smiled at him.

"Oppie my friend can you please deal with your assistant?" he asked calmly.

Oppenheimer stayed silent and awkwardly gazed at Klaus Fuchs. Questioning if he has just been betrayed by someone he fully trusted with his help all those years ago.

Oppenheimer thought to himself out of disbelief. "I trusted him. Is he actually with them? He can't be with them. This isn't possible."

Klaus then shoved Lloyd out of the way and strolled over to Oppenheimer. Noticing the pained look on his face.

"What's wrong Oppie?" Klaus asked.

Oppenheimer stayed silent and coldly gazed into Klaus' eyes. Klaus smirked and went to snatch the briefcase. But Oppenheimer firmly grabbed Klaus' wrist.

"Oppie if you allow them to have the information they will leave this place," he said. "They will even allow you to live out your life in peace."

"I will not allow anyone else to have this information Klaus," he replied with guilt. "It has caused too much destruction and I won't allow more to be caused by it."

"Why are you so insistent on holding onto that information?" he asked with annoyance. "It has bought you so much pain so why not let go?"

"Because it will cause more destruction in the hands of others," he replied. "I will not let go of the information even though it causes me pain."

Oppenheimer then let go of Klaus' wrist and Klaus stepped back from Oppenheimer. Lloyd then wandered over to a small bookshelf and grabbed a relatively large book off the shelf. He cautiously walked over to Klaus and raised the book in the air slightly. Klaus then turned around and awkwardly stared at Lloyd.

"Do you really want to do that? I mean I know that you want to hurt me," Klaus asked. "But do you really want to hurt me in front of Oppie?"

"You are a traitor to this country and to everyone in this laboratory," Lloyd said with a hint of bitterness in his voice. "I'm not afraid to hurt anyone. Trust me I learned to fend for myself real fast."

"I didn't mean to betray anyone here. I was doing my duty," he replied.

"Your duty. Your duty to steal information and to lie to people," he said.

Lloyd swung the book at Klaus. But Klaus grabbed the book and pried it out of Lloyds hand and tossed it aside. Lloyd tightly clenched his fists causing his knuckles to go white. Then he punched Klaus directly in the face causing Klaus to hit the floor with a thud. Oppenheimer looked at Lloyd then at Klaus who was now unconscious. Lloyd unfurled his fists and knelt down in front of Klaus and picked up Klaus' glasses and snapped them in half then tossed them aside.

Lloyd got up off the floor and looked at Oppenheimer who was still in shock from Lloyds actions.

"Sorry that I did that," he said awkwardly.

"Just don't do that again," he replied.

"Listen Oppie we are in a very stressful–"

"I know that. But I don't want you hurting people Lloyd," he said sternly. "Violence is not the answer. Now we need to get out of here before we possibly end up dead."

Oppenheimer then exited the room and Lloyd followed him and shut the door behind himself.

Walking down the hallway they started to hear a low hum quickly approaching them. They both stopped and glanced out a window. A large plane was approaching their location.

Eventually they heard a loud crash down one of the hallways. This caught their attention and they immediately glanced down the hallway. They noticed a large almost rocket shaped object had crashed through the concrete ceiling implanting itself into the floor.

Oppenheimer gripped Lloyds arm and he started tugging at it.

"We need to run!" he said urgently.

"Why?" he asked with confusion.

"It's a bomb! We need to get out of this building!" he replied anxiously.

"Alright then lets get out of here!" he said.

Oppenheimer let go of Lloyds arm and they both began sprinting down the hallway. Upon almost reaching the end of the hallway there was a deafening bang. Oppenheimer and Lloyd were both flung against the wall by the force of the explosion. The impact rendering them unconscious.
