Chapter 22: Robin
Thursday Night
Again, I'm basing this off fanfics and other books i've read. I've never been in a relationship. ON WITH DA STOOORRRRYYYYY!!!
They sat on a bench not far from the beystadium. Robin and Daigo were the only ones there. They sat facing each other, and both could feel the silence thicken in the air.
Robin spoke first, trying to not explode. It wasn't easy. "You're lucky Ryota didn't wake up Ken instead," she said hesitantly, feeling their mixed emotions flow through the air. "He wouldn't have taken it so well."
"Guess I should be more impressed."
She took a breath. "Okay. I get the silver. But seriously, your arm? Again, you're a blader. Launching'll be a bit hard, don't you think?"
"Didn't think. You and Ryota surprised me."
"Sure..." Robin drew out the 'u.' "I don't believe you, but I suppose it doesn't matter." She reached for his left arm and pulled up the sleeve, drew back the paper towel. "How many of those are accidents?"
He clearly figured lying wouldn't be too useful. "One."
Robin sighed. "I-I'm not good at this. Why is talking so hard? And why is your face turning pink?"
Daigo blinked, not realizing how obvious his emotions were. "Because you're holding my hand." Indeed, when Robin looked down, she realized that, unconsciously, her hand had slipped down to meet Daigo's.
"Don't be so wimpy... Jeez, now I'm embarrassed, you jerk!" She pulled her hand back, not seeing her friend's hurt face.
"Never mind." He started cleaning the cuts with disinfectant, aware that they would leave scars anyways. The book had told him on a previous page, that silver would leave scars on Descendants, along with Beyblades. "Tell me something."
"What?" Robin was confused.
"A-a secret," he clarified, now realizing how stupid it sounded out loud. "You're keeping one for me, I guess. So it makes things even."
Robin tilted her head, ears turning red. "Ah... okay?" She thought for a moment.
What in Japan should I tell him? Shu's nickname? The fact that I cheated on my last Japanese test?
Tell him your birth name.
Robin inhaled sharply. If one Descendant knew another's birth name, it granted them extreme power over the other should they choose to make them do that. That's a major risk.
So's telling him about cheating.
Haha, she grumbled. So funny. I almost laughed.
Ramos ignored that. Do you trust him?
She watched Daigo, unfolding a piece of paper from his jacket. Robin thought about the Daigo. And though he had lied about the knife and Doomscyther, Robin already knew her answer.
Yes.
Daigo gasped, cheeks coloring.
"What?" Robin leaned forward to look at whatever he was staring at so intently. A paper. Her paper."Hey... that's mine!"
It was a picture that Robin had doodled in Japanese, while the teacher droned. It was an Espeon and a Umbreon with a heart in between, all poorly drawn. The Espeon had a name tag with "Robin" on it.
The Umbreon had Daigo's.
Robin glared at him, but instead of hitting him, she dug around in her backpack and took out the paper she had kept ever since Daigo dropped it at the first tournament. It had a very well-drawn portrait of herself, down to the last detail. Not that she looked in the mirror much. She knew she was ugly, but the picture almost made her believe otherwise. "Remember this?"
"That's mine! I-I got bored in class."
"Of course you did."
The tense atmosphere had disappeared and both of them felt more at ease."Well?" Daigo asked hesitantly. "Uh.. the other thing?"
Robin sighed. "Okay... uh, Ramos suggested my birth name..."
Any Descendant who didn't know what that meant was stupid, and Daigo wasn't stupid. The only times a Descendant gave away their birth name was when they trusted the other person immensely, or-- or when they were about to propose.
"Well, you know Shu's first hair color was light blue, right? Well, mine was too. When I knocked him into the cabinet, he freaked out and hit me. I freaked out too, and changed his aura color, which changed his emotions. I scared him so bad, I got scared too. I really don't get how that changed our hair color, but that's why mine's white. " She sighed, rolled her eyes again. "I'm talking too much. So, let's try this again. My name's Azura. Nice to meet you."
Daigo laughed. "You mean that singer in Fates?"
Her cheeks colored. "Yes, like the most powerful person in Fates."
"Oh... you're not joking... I think your name's really pretty."
"Eh. I prefer Robin." Her eyes glittered. "So... what's yours?"
He groaned. "Are you kidding me?"
"What'd ya expect?" Robin laughed. "Hello, this is my name, bye?"
"Yes." Once seeing her pleading eyes, Daigo sighed. "I'm using my real name right now, genius."
Robin gaped. That could leave him open to so much, and so many different ways he could be vulnerable. Was he an idiot? "Say what now?"
"So, guess I'll tell you something else."
He finished wrapping the bandage tightly, then took off his jacket, that he would always wear. Daigo slowly began untying his bandana.
What's he doing?
Well, it wasn't that other thing you thought he was... Ramos started scrolling through Lennys on his phone.
Ewww!!! That's not what I meant!
The bandanna fell to the bench.
Dago turned toward her so she could see. "Please don't laugh, just because"
Robin saw him in the light and gasped.
"- of this."
The bandanna that held up his hair had been there to disguise adorable black ears, which twitched with every movement.. The jacket had hidden his long dark tail, which swished around in the air, revealing how nervous he was. A neko. Rare, especially in Japan, almost unheard of. Robin heard that in America they were more common. But Daigo? Grouchy, sarcastic Daigo? Best day ever!
Robin fell over laughing. "Well, I guess that Umbreon wasn't so far off."
"Haha," Daigo muttered, his tail curling around his shoulders. "With cat ears, I can hear twice as well. And since I have a tail, I have a lot of balance." To demonstrate, he jumped four feet in the air, did a flip, and landed on his feet. "But this is only when my bandanna and jacket are off. So, ask Ramos -- why the birth names?"
Ramos gleefully answered the question. Because I wanted Robin to ask you out! Or you! I don't care.
"What!?" Robin yelled, not bothering with the mental communication. Daigo watched her curiously. "Oh, um... she said that she wanted her ship to come true."
Daigo suddenly got off the bench. "Well, screw her." He stood to leave, but hesitated. "Hey Robin."
"Hmm?"
"I think if it weren't for you, I wouldn't have had any reason to fight Doomscyther. For that, thank you." He bit his lip.
"If you're going to say something, spit it out." Robin tapped her foot. "We're going to freeze, you know."
"Fine. I was thinking of asking you out, okay?" His face was beet red. "So... what about it?"
Robin was totally silent, but Ramos was fangirling and screaming in her head. I ship it! I ship it!
"I know it's a bit sudden," Daigo added, quieter and shyer now. "But... we both wrote those notes, and Ramos agrees, and Doomscizor agrees-"
""Doomscizor?"
"The good side of my bey."
"Oh."
"Will you be my girlfriend?" he asked again, reaching with his left hand. Daigo winced and used his right hand instead.
Robin stared at the outstretched hand. She had no idea what she actually felt for Daigo, whether it was curiosity of someone not running away in terror, enjoyment of a person who was like her, or... love, she guessed the third was. She could always figure it out from here. "I suppose," Robin sighed, taking his hand. "I did give away my name."
Daigo groaned. "Robin! Can you be serious for three seconds?" He shrugged. "Ah, well. You said yes." The neko blushed. "That means I can now do... this." He sat next to her, and pulled Robin to him. And kissed her.
On.
The.
Lips.
Well, any doubts she had were immediately shoved out of her mind when her face burned. She definitely liked him, which was either good or bad, Robin couldn't tell. She'd think more about it later.
When he pulled back, both had turned pink. "Why do you taste like peanut butter?" Robin mumbled, not meaning for Daigo to hear it.
Daigo laughed, cheeks flushed. "Eat peanut butter first, reveal your non human-ness to your girlfriend later. Now you know why I didn't get surgery." He tied the bandana, put the jacket on."Anyways, now I can give you this." He pulled another thing out of his pocket. A simple copper necklace attaching to a ruby. "For you."
Robin's jaw dropped. "How much did the gem cost?"
"Mom bought it, but it was too small. We're not Murasaki, but mom and dad can afford a lot." He sighed. "I don't have much pocket money, so I couldn't buy you anything really nice, but--"
"Daigo. Stop." Robin smiled at him. "I don't care that it's regifted. It's the nicest thing any friend has ever done for me."
Daigo put his jacket and bandanna back on, and Robin threw her arms around him. "Thank you, Daigo! I-I love you!" The words felt a bit strange. She had never told anyone she loved them.
A flash and a click stopped them. "Huh?"
Robin glanced around. A rustle in the bushes made her head snap that way, and she saw two people running as fast as they could.
Daigo was already running. She sprinted alongside him, and they skidded in front of the people who ran.
It was Wakiya and Honcho, shirts off. Wakiya held up his phone, laughing. "We got pics!"
"How long were you there for?"
"We just got there," panted Honcho. "The Honcho is gonna get a million likes!"
"Delete it!" Robin demanded.
Wakiya looked at Honcho. Honcho nodded. In unison, they pressed post.
Robin looked at Daigo. Daigo nodded.
The neko stole Wakiya's phone, and Robin took Honcho's. Then they ran for lives.
She pulled Daigo of to the side, circling around toward the park. Once there again, she hid under the bench. Daigo joined her.
"Wanna know another secret?" she whispered to him. "Hid under here while you guys were talking the night before I came to the school. Think you saw me when I left through the bushes."
Daigo saw Wakiya and Honcho's shadows. Hurriedly, they scrolled through the blonde's posts and deleted their picture from there and the photo album. Then, the two waited until the shadows left, and they heard two beys circling in the stadium. Robin waited until then to crawl out and leave the phones there.
And Daigo snuck over to the stadium, where Honcho finally beat Wakiya, and turned the video setting on.
He got footage of a kiss, and another bey battle.
Robin tugged on his arm before he could take another video and they ran back towards Daigo's apartment.
While they ran,Robin's watch chimed midnight, and for the stories she read, Robin threw her reclaimed silver knife on the ground.
-----
So.... what story was that?
its back to beybldaing after this chapter. These last few chapters were to introduce the concept of names and beyblades controlling people.
Let me know what you think!
Robin out!
