Chapter 13: Daigo
Daigo slowly opened his journal on Sunday night, started writing a black pen.
Doomscyther doesn't like me much. Nothing weird there, he's never liked me.
But it's worse now.
I get the feeling. I should do something. But what?
I don't understand.
I don't understand.
A dizzying feeling came over him, and Daigo turned the page. He began to write again, hand moving of it's own accord. It wouldn't stop it, even when Daigo willed it to hold still, even used his other hand to hold it still. Nothing worked.
I don't like you much.
I hate your weakness
I hate how you think.
You're pathetic and weak.
You've been through the same thing. Why can't you understand?
UnderStand, Daigo...
UNDERSTAND.
The dizziness left him, and he unsteadily stood up. "Doomscyther," he muttered. "Seriously? This isn't funny anymore."
A form began to take shape against the book. "It stopped being funny a long time ago, Daigo Kurogami."
He glanced behind him, checking for a certain violet eyed little brother, then lowered his voice. The last thing he wanted to do was have his brother know he had no control over his bey. "Doomscyther, how are you able to maintain physical form?"
The dark shape grinned. "No need to worry about that. What you do need to worry about is that if you don't play nice, this is what I will do for revenge."
He told him, and Daigo turned pale. "So, what do you want me to do?"
It was Monday, and Daigo had spent the whole night training. Weary from what Doomscyther had made him do, he grabbed his backpack and slowly started walking to school.
Not so fast! Your training for today isn't done yet.
I have to get to school. The training can wait.
I could force you to.
Daigo could feel his composure starting to break. He held up his left hand and waited until the world's colors receded, leaving just the black and white that showed souls. His hand was still dark, dark grey. Huh. Guess it improved a little. Maybe doing what his bey told him to do would make him a better person in general.
His body started moving backwards on its own, and he growled and stiffened. "I'll finish the training! Stop!"
Doomscyther didn't stop. He forced Daigo to run fifty laps at a sprint around the park, do about a hundred more pushups, and the like.
Meanwhile, the pale boy was cursing his weakness with every step, every painful move. He cursed his insensitivity, his fears, and himself for allowing this thing to happen.
Weak.
At eight thirty, Doomscyther made Daigo sprint to the school. He had enough decency to release him in a nearby alley instead of for everyone to see him exhausted.
Daigo's legs gave out, and he fell to the ground. He could barely breathe, much less get up.
"Daigo?"
His head spun.
"Daigo?"
Black was swallowing his vision.
"Daigo, what did you do this time?"
He couldn't hear anymore. He saw nothing, he heard nothing. Nothing except Doomscyther laughing. Laughing and laughing and laughing.
Robin:
She found Daigo passed out on the ground, drenched in sweat. "Daigo, what did you do this time?"
8:41, Ramos told her.
Good to know, thank you Ramos. I'll be fast.
Dark circles under his eyes, hair soaked, jacket still on. Why was his jacket still on? She sighed and grabbed her water bottle from her backpack. Robin unscrewed the bottle and dumped the contents over Daigo.
He was still out.
She grabbed him by the collar and shook him up and down.
Nothing.
Robin tugged his ear, hair, and pinched him.
No reaction. Seriously? God he was sweaty.
Robin tapped her foot impatiently against the wall. She remembered a prank one of her favorite characters in Fire Emblem Awakening, Lissa had played on Robin. "Hey, that could work... Time to gently... Hold your nose!"
She pinched his nose shut and waited for a count of three seconds.
"Gaah!" Daigo's eyes shot open and he slapped at her hand. Robin jumped back. When she was done freaking out, she said, "You look dead. Did you pull an all-nighter?"
Daigo shook his head. Oh yeah? The circles under his eyes said otherwise. "Nah. I just couldn't sleep." He paused, probably checking what time it was with Doomscyther. "Now we're so going to be late. And my clothes are soaked."
Robin unzipped her backpack and pulled out jeans and a snug leather jacket. "These are my spares. I've never used them, so you can if you need to."
Just then the bell rang, and Robin swore. She was so getting detention. Her math teacher was going to kill her, . "Go to the bathroom and change, but go fast, cause advisory just started."
Daigo:
He fell asleep twice in class, and couldn't focus. Doomscyther was being a pain by alternately blasting explicit rock music at full volume in his head, and singing love songs.
Will you just SHUT UP???
No. Doomscyther started singing again.
At lunch, Daigo dragged himself to the cherry trees in the corner, where no one went, and fell asleep again. He stayed there until the bell rang for school to get out.
Time to get up, Kurogami. You're going to the beyclub, then home to do homework, then to train again.
He gritted his teeth as Daigo stood up. Little do you know how I'm breaking while you fall asleep, little do you know...
And stop singing! Doomscyther yelled. Only I sing!
During the beyclub, Daigo felt his bey yelling directions on how to better his launch. He guessed that he got tired of how slow he was and wanted to have a better trainer. That hurt his feelings, but Daigo figured he deserved it. If he was this weak, then he didn't deserve to be a bladder. Or maybe that was just his beyblade influencing him. It wasn't like it mattered.
"Let's battle again!" Valt cheered, talking to Robin.
She shook her head. "Give Daigo a chance. He'll beat you."
"No one beats me!" the smol bean yelled, running over to Daigo. "Battle me!"
He said nothing, just nodded.
New launch: Launch me at a reverse angle, and I'll go around the stadium clockwise. Valtryek usually goes the other way.
"Three, two, one, let it... rip!" Daigo released Doomscyther. It raced around the stadium with extreme speed, and Valt gasped.
"So awesome!" His face turned more serious. "Now, Valtryek! Flash launch!"
Honcho's jaw dropped. "Simultaneous ring out finish. No points."
This went on for some time, until Valt used a combination of Rush launch and Flash launch to wreck Daigo.
"I've gotta go," he said, grabbing his backpack. Shu frowned slightly, a bit confused and maybe suspicious. If Shu figured it out, it'd be that dramatic, 'oh, don't do this to yourself,' thing and that was dumb. Besides, Daigo knew he needed the training. Someone like him deserved to feel that pain, with how his soul was. "I'm going to teach Ryota today," Daigo improvised, snatching his phone and water,
Robin nodded, believing it.
"Wait!"
What now? Doomscyther groaned.
The principal came rushing out, carrying a thick stack of papers. "These are invitations to the other tournament. If you do well enough, you can qualify for the team tournaments."
Valt jumped in the air. "Alright! YESSS!!!"
One of the papers fell on the ground, but no one bothered to pick it up, because they were all covering their ears. "Valt..." Keru warned.
"Haha, right, sorry."
"Anyways, here's Wakiya's." Wakiya grinned.
"I knew I'd make it." Daigo thought a few crude words that Valt's mother would've skinned him for.
"Here's Daigo's." Daigo let out a rare smile as he took the paper. He hadn't expected this. Ryoya would be so proud of him.
"Me! Me!" Valt yelled.
"Ken." Ken eyes shone happily.
"And..." Valt and Honcho held their breath. "Valt."
Honcho paled. "W-where's mine?"
The principal frowned. "That's odd, I'm sure I had it."
The paper on the ground flew off. Daigo opened his mouth to speak, but Doomscyther shut it fast. Idiot. Even though that's the invite, it's one less opponent for you to fight.
He tried to shake off his bey's control, but it was really hard. Just a he was about to speak, Valt yelled, "That paper was the invite! After it!"
You did say I needed to run. How about a compromise. I'll do as much training as you want me to. Just let me get that paper for Honcho, got it?
Fine. But you will do everything I say after this.
Daigo searched for about an hour, finally grabbing Valt by the arm. "Valt!" He pointed up at the tree nearest to them. The principal was at the bottom of it, trying to hit a piece of paper with a stick. "Invitation, right there."
"Oh, hello boys," the principal said, waving the stick around. "I'm trying to get that piece of paper from there. I don't know what it is, though."
Valt jumped up onto the principal's head and snatched the paper. "Yes! It's Honcho's invitation!"
Daigo smiled, just a little. "Nice."
The old man rubbed his head. "Watch where you're going, Valt! Be carefu-"
Valt nearly ran him over as he charged to the bey-training area. Daigo sighed. "Sorry, sir."
As he walked away, Doomscyther's form appeared on the ground as a black cat. "Time to pay up, Kurogami."
He flinched, already knowing what was coming. "Just avoid Robin. I don't want her to know about this, and she probably knows how to stop you, so don't."
Doomscyther threw back his tiny head and meowed, taking Daigo's form. "No one can stop me. Now move it, useless freak." He disappeared, and he felt his bey take over him again.
There was nothing he could do, so he let himself be taken. Maybe he should just close his eyes and let it all happen. If Doomscyther took him and fully possessed him, no one would actually miss him. Maybe be sad for a few days, maybe even a week, but things would go back to normal. Who could care about him when all he would ever be was...
