Chapter Two: Octavia The Talking Necklace
[Unedited]
Her mother hadn't said a thing since they left the house, neither did her dad, who was too busy glancing anxiously at the sides, as if afraid a magical unicorn would appear and he would accidentally run over it.
They had been driving for about an hour now, and all she saw around her was the green, leafy forest. From time to time, she had caught curious animals glancing at them through the wood's green foliage, their beady eyes staring at her with great interest.
Why was she staring at animals?
Because she was practically half-dead of boredom.
The tension was thick inside the car, the silence was deafening and awkwardness was getting to her, it felt like the time when she entered an elevator, so awkward, it was killing her.
She wished her little brother was here, he would have made countless corny kid jokes and fired childish insults at her, but hey, it was better than this.
But sadly, Christopher had decided to stay home with Jace and their Labrador, Sky. So he wasn't here to lighten the mood up.
Christina tried to entertain herself by playing with bubble wrap a while ago, but she ran out of bubbles to pop. So she decided to go through her backpack to look for anything that would entertain her.
The only things in her backpack was the letter, the boxes, her sketchpad, a notebook, coloring pencils, cookies, a water bottle, a white shirt, and a red rubber ball.
The ball was actually their dog's goodbye present to her. Giving it to her right before she left. Yeah, it was covered in drool and dirt, but it was an awesome gift... Sort of.
She tried to think of anything to do, but nothing came to mind, so she just decided to lean against the window, gazing outside it for anything entertaining.
It was sun-shiny, about nine in the morning, the sun casting a golden blanket of warm light on whatever it's rays could touch. The sun created a warm and inviting effect on the forest.
Strangely, she had a weird urge to push open the car door and run into the forest to join the animals frolicking in it's natural beauty.
What was weirder, was when she lost control over her body.
Her right arm shot out and nearly opened the door, but her left arm pulled it back. Her right foot slammed against the door repeatedly, like a wild animal trying to get out of a cage.
"What the--"
Something moved in the forest.
It was a blurry silhouette of a man in a cloak, it was standing there for a moment, before it vanished in a blink of her eyes.
But she saw what lied beneath the hood, two piercing gray eyes.
An expression of fear crossed her face. Was she being watched? Was there someone stalking her?
She saw the figure again, this time, closer to the road. Take note that they were driving, how did it get there so fast? She had no idea.
This time it stayed there for two seconds, before vanishing again.
Christina was getting paranoid so she told her mother what she saw and how she was loosing control over her own body.
She wish she hadn't though, because her mother's reaction was something she didn't expect.
Cassandra burst into tears and buried her tear-stained face in her hands, her father's face hardened, his eyes darkening, but he made no move to comfort his wife, probably because he was driving and he had to focus on not killing them or running over a deer.
Her mother sobbed and sobbed, tears dripping into her lap, while her daughter stared at her with widening eyes.
What was going on?!
The her seat belt unlatched.
She didn't even touch it, but the strap was released from it's hold like a snake recoiling from an enemy.
Christina screamed when she lost control over her body again. Her right arm shot out and opened the car door, and she let out a yell as she saw the moving road.
Her dad, noticing what she was doing, hit the breaks and the car skidded to a stop. Christina's body jumped out of the car and grabbed her backpack.
"Mom!", she exclaimed as she put on her backpack involuntarily, like a puppet being moved by a puppeteer. "What's going on! Why can't I--"
Her legs broke into a run.
She tried to take control, but nothing would work, her body refused to cooperate with her intentions. She called to her mother, pleading them to help her, but they stayed in the car, her mother sobbing, her father staring at the steering wheel, none of them listening to her cries.
Suddenly, her legs halted to a stop. She gained control again.
Whirling around, she gasped.
The car and the road was nowhere in sight. In it's place was a huge moldy rock scribbled with strange words and symbols that Christina couldn't comprehend nor care about.
She dropped to her knees.
Suddenly the stone glowed a bright blue, she shielded her eyes from the light and stepped back when she saw something appear beside the rock, as if suddenly conjured up.
It was her luggage.
Packed up neatly in a roller bag.
She flung herself at the stone, hoping to find a way back to the road. Wrong move.
As if there was a force field surrounding the rock, she was shot back by an invisible force, her back slamming onto the forest ground. The young girl let out a cry as pain spread across her body. But as soon as it came, it vanished. Leaving her scared, confused and alone.
"I'M BACK BABY! WOOOO!", a voice boomed behind her. "FINALLY! I MISSED THIS PLACE!"
Christina turned and her face morphed into an expression of shock and confusion. There was no one there.
Then she heard the voice again.
"Ahhhh... So good to be back!"
The blonde froze and realized the voice was coming from her backpack. Slowly, she slid it off her back, unzipped it, trying not to make any noise and glance inside.
There was a faint golden glow coming from the blue box, the one she took from the attic. A few golden rays of light escaping it's gaps, a loud, female voice rejoicing inside.
Pulling the box out of the bag, Christina untied the white ribbon and slowly opened the lid.
She screamed.
Inside the box was the necklace she saw in the album, it's smiling golden sun grinning at her with glee. Wait, no. Not grinning. Laughing.
"Well well well", it's said, it's mouth moving to form the words. "What do we have here?"
Christina did the natural thing that most people do when their jewelry decides to have a conversation with them.
She threw the necklace at a tree.
She expected it to shatter and fall to the ground. Instead, it just harmlessly bounced back into her hand right before it came in contact with the tree's bark.
"I wouldn't do they again, if I were you---"
Christina screeched and threw the talking possessed necklace on the ground, about to step on it repeatedly, that is, until it glowed a bright gold and she was thrown off balance and fell on to the floor.
The necklace levitated and glowed a bright gold, the sun's face sporting a smug expression.
"My dear, you cannot kill me!", the jewelry declared, "For I am Octavia! The killer of ogres, sorceress of the north, slayer of the goat man and the forger of the glass blade of Wacheupee! I am immortal! Powerful and the most fabulous necklace alive!"
Christina paused, and gulped in fear, her eyes reflecting her scared emotions. "R-really?", she stuttered, her face flushed.
The necklace roared with mirth, then the wicked laughter stopped and she flashed her a sheepish smile.
"Not really, I just made that up to sound cool", she admitted, "I'm just a talking necklace that can fly and glow, that's all"
"H-how are- why are--"
The sun's golden lips curved in a knowing grin. Octavia licked her lips, waiting patiently for her to continue her statement.
"Are you-- are you magical?"
Octavia's smile fell.
"What?! Pfft, nope. I fly, glow and talk using batteries and coffee -- OF COURSE I'M MAGICAL YOU FOOL!", the necklace growled.
"Oh...", Christina said, trying her best to process the fact she was talking to an object and it was talking back, sarcastically. "Um... Can you answer my question?"
"Didn't you just ask one?"
"Erm... Well yeah..uh...Where am I?"
The necklace released a cackle of laughter. The sun's eyes glowing a dangerous gold, as if there were small light bulbs in there.
"My dear", it said, it's face twisted in a sweet grin. "Why don't I show you?"
"Wait what---"
"But you have to catch me first!", Octavia exclaimed, playfully.
And with that, the glowing necklace flew towards the forest and Christina was forced to follow, dragging her roller bag behind her.
"HEY! COME BACK!"
Her pleading was replied by the object with a roar of mirth.
She followed the glowing necklace through twist and turns, ducking through low branches, as she chased after the flying piece of jewelry that zipped among the trees, Octavia's wicked laughter rining in her ears.
Neither of the two noticed the lone cloaked figure watching them dash through the forest, his piercing grey eyes following their moving figures, a small smile playing in his lips.
