Guilty
A nurse entered the room. Mindy thought it was time for painkillers, as was always the case in the morning. However, she was surprised to find that she had visitors.
Alfie's head peeked through the crack in the door, and Erin's voice was heard complaining to him about dragging her to see those she distrusted. Especially Sam Carpenter. She had read a lot about her on the networks and had certain misgivings about having her so close, unlike Alfie who seemed willing to help.
"Guys, I'm glad you're all right," Alfie said, sighing with relief.
Chad was sprawled on the couch. Most of his bandages had already been removed. He still retained that serious countenance, assimilating the facts in which they found themselves.
Mindy, on the other hand, received the visitors with a look of distrust.
"Do you care about us now?"
"Of course, you are friends of Tara's. In addition, you do not know how I would like to know her whereabouts. I've been doing some research and tried to locate her phone, but it's been impossible. It seems that it has vanished".
"Quite convenient I would say," Mindy said without taking that look off judging them.
"Are you already telling us that we are behind Tara's disappearance?" Erin said defensively. "See, Alfie? That's why I didn't want to accompany you to come here".
"But Erin, we have to help somehow," Alfie demanded, insisting to his companion.
Chad thanked Alfie for his kindness, even though he knew that he was secretly in love with Tara and that she treated him like a good friend. He never felt jealous of him. He always trusted Tara and she trusted him. He was still overwhelmed by finding Gale with Sidney the night before. He longed for Sam not to meet them. Well, Sam had left for an unknown destination very early that morning.
Alfie left a box of donuts he had bought for them on the table and Erin left a gift bag next to the box.
"So that you can eat something delicious."
"And so that they can have fun reading something interesting. They're books I figured you'd like," Erin added.
After that, the two young people said goodbye. They had classes and they didn't plan to miss them. Mindy, clutching a strawberry cream doughnut with sprinkles, looked at her brother trying to read his mind. Then she examined the doughnut in her hand in detail. She smelled it, felt it and squeezed it.
"Suspicious. Very suspicious.
"Won't you eat the donuts?" Chad smiled very little.
Then Mindy took a big bite.
"They passed the test. So yes. And they're pretty good," Mindy said after testing the scientific method. "However, those two continue to top my list of possible suspects... "
As always, his sister managed to make him smile...
At the entrance to the hospital, Sam took a drag on her cigarette and held a shopping bag full of drinks and snacks to snack on. She had gone out to a minimarket, shopping inside the hospital was too expensive. In addition, she needed a pack of cigarettes because she and Chad had already consumed it all. In addition, the nurses had reprimanded her for smoking inside the hospital and she chose to do it outside.
The cold of the morning soaked her bones, causing her to arrange her long jacket on her shoulders. Beside her, Danny Brackett looked at her. He had not spoken to her since he had found her on the spot a few minutes before, he remained silent by her side, accompanying her in her lethargy.
Sam was the one who broke the silence, with a trembling and dry voice. Danny comforted her by bringing her closer to his body in a sideways hug, letting her know that he would always be there for her.
"I miss her so much, Danny." Sam's cheeks were wet from crying. "I miss Tara so much. I don't know what to do to find her".
"What if you set up Ghostface?" Danny suggested.
"And if it's not just one Ghostface? They could kill her if they find out we killed one".
"And why should they find out?" Danny cradled the girl's tearful face and placed a kiss on her forehead. Then he fixed his gaze on hers. "I know you're afraid for Tara, but maybe it's better to take a little risk to get some clue about her".
They melted into an embrace. Sam had stopped crying, but she really valued having Danny by her side again.
"I needed someone who understood me".
"I'll always be there for you, Sam. Even when everything becomes difficult".
Then Sam opened her eyes and saw Gale Weathers along with Sidney Prescott who, with crutches and a splint on her foot, was waiting for Gale to bring the car closer to the flowerbed.
Sam tensed up and Danny asked what was going on. She just hugged him tighter.
"I just want it to be over," she feigned her voice of pain and kept her gaze fixed on Sidney, who was getting into the car with Gale's help.
She let go of Danny when the car had started. She watched as they drove away through the parking lot towards the main road. Then ahe returned her gaze feigning sadness for Danny. In her head, she couldn't imagine that Sidney was already in New York and on top of that she was hurt, most likely by the same Ghostface who was blackmailing her.
Or perhaps, it was someone else. Would they work together? Or was it another random Ghostface who would kill Sidney by snatching her chance to do so and save Tara? But, in the end, that's what Ghostface wants, to kill Sidney. Or did he want her to specifically do it herself?
She had a hundred questions.
"Sam?" Are you ok? Danny asked, taking her by the shoulders and looking for her gaze, which was lost in a stalemate.
"I must go," she said, stepping away from Danny. "Could you tell the guys inside that I'm going to talk to Kirby? Or better, I will send them a message, don't worry".
"At this time, isn't it better for all of us to stay united?"
Sam as she walked away to the main street, she spoke.
"Didn't you say I had to take a chance if I wanted to find Tara?" Well, that's what I'm doing".
"But don't do it alone. I'm going with you".
Both asked for a taxi to the police station. Upon arrival, officers mentioned that Officer Reede was conducting an interrogation and forced them to wait for her. Sam thought that was strange. She thought Kirby was exclusively assigned to Ghostface case and Tara's disappearance.
Reede showed up for the front desk after twenty minutes. Another FBI agent and a blonde girl were following her. None of the three noticed Sam or Danny's presence. Kirby went to talk to her colleagues in the next room. Officer Lopez went to a nearby office and the blonde woman went to the front door. She looked up and was puzzled to meet Sam's. She stopped her steps and clutched her hand to her chest.
"Are you Sam Carpenter?" she asked in a very silent voice, as if it were difficult for her to articulate her words.
Danny glanced at Sam out of the corner of his eye, dismayed. Sam was surprised. She didn't know the girl.
"Yes... It's me," she replied doubtfully. "Why the question? "
Amanda's eyes suddenly watered, and her countenance became coarser.
"You did it, didn't you?!"
Sam didn't understand what was happening.
"Did you, do it?!" Her voice rose suddenly, drawing the attention of the officers. "You killed my William?! "
"What?!"
Agent Lopez, upon hearing the commotion, went to the main entrance with handcuffs in his hands. To Danny and Sam's surprise, he forced her to put them on.
"Sam Carpenter, you're under arrest for being a suspect in the murder of William Kobach".
"What?!" Sam muttered stunned.
"Are you serious?!" Danny insisted as he saw Sam being pinned down.
Kirby then appeared at the front desk. Her face was serious with some grief. She approached Sam, who was looking for explanations, Kirby mentioned that it was only protocol. She needed to hear her alibi and testimony in order to free her.
"I need you to work with us, Sam. This way we will release you as soon as possible".
She ordered Danny to wait for her while Sam was taken to the interrogation room.
Sam sat down, with both wrists in front of her and saw Kirby and Luis in front of her with their notebooks ready to get details.
"Where were you the night before yesterday, from nine o'clock to eleven o'clock at night?" Lopez asked in a monotone voice.
"In the hospital. I accompanied my friends. Remember we were attacked by a fucking madman dressed up as Ghostface a few days ago," she turned to Kirby, incredulous. "Kirby, don't tell me that just because he was my psychiatrist I would kill him".
"Sam. I need proof that you were in the hospital at that time," Kirby said very seriously. "Who can corroborate the information for me? If I find out that you are lying to us, you will have fewer points in your favor".
Then Sam counted the hours. It wasn't true, just at that time she was on the street, fleeing from a Ghostface camouflaged in the crowd, which she found after following... Danny.
"Wait, wait..." Sam became nervous. "I was out at that time. I remember. Sorry for answering so instinctively. This droves me crazy".
Lopez raised an eyebrow and continued to write down in his notebook. Sam began to despair.
"Kirby, at that time I was attacked by a Ghostface.
"Were you on the streets alone?"
"Well, yes, but... I was following someone suspicious.
"Could it be known to whom?" This time it was Lopez who asked.
"Well... "Then she realized that she was in a tremendous mess.
"Well?"
"..."
Kirby still didn't speak. She had let her companion go on.
"Please answer, Miss Carpenter.
"I was following Danny Brackett..."
"Were you chasing the person you came to the police station with today?" Kirby tensed in her chair and folded her arms across her chest. "Are you fucking kidding me? "
"Wait, Kirby. I came to tell you something important... It's not what you think".
"Sam... This is serious. There is evidence that makes you a suspect of this crime".
"Proof?" Just the fact that he was my doctor?"
"No," Kirby leaned over the table. "There's a recording of a witness who went online, right after the time of the crime and it looks like it's about you, wearing a Ghostface costume..."
"Kirby. It wasn't me. I swear." Sam tried to understand everything. "Do you hear how crazy it all sounds? It is impossible that it was me. I didn't wear any Ghostface costumes that day".
"We still need more evidence to the contrary, Sam," Kirby finally declared. "For the time being, you will stay here at the police station. Some laboratory tests are still needed".
"Kirby, what about Tara?" Sam was desperate about what was happening to her. "You can't do this to me! I'm innocent! "
"You need medication. We'll make sure to give you the necessary one while you're here. We will consult with experts," she turned to Lopez and ordered him to take her to a temporary cell. "Make sure she has medicine and good food until we have all the results".
"Are you serious?!" Do you think I went crazy like that all of a sudden?!" Sam shouted as she struggled with Lopez who began to drag her towards her cell.
"No, Sam," Kirby glanced sideways at Sam and then wrote back in her notebook. "I just have to be cautious".
Lopez took Sam to her cell and Kirby was left to take things in. She had made a small spider diagram in her notebook connecting all the events that had occurred in search of a coincidence. She needed more information; however, she did not know where she could get it from.
She left the interrogation room massaging her temple trying to internalize everything. Danny bumped into her and asked about Sam. She explained everything to him, and Danny didn't believe his ears. She knew a lot about Sam, but she wasn't a vile murderer.
"Maybe not by purpose, Danny. But she could have been unbalanced by everything she has gone through. Besides, it comes from blood... "
Danny remained incredulous, first and foremost.
"I will prove that what you say is not true. I'll prove Sam's innocence. We need to get the case back on track so we can find Tara".
"Danny," Kirby stumbled over whether or not to tell him. "I need to do my job".
"Finding Tara is also your job... "
Kirby closed her eyes, hesitating to speak her mind.
"Since I've been a victim of what Ghostface is capable of, it's quite likely that Tara is no longer alive".
Danny took a step back at the agent's statement.
"But... "
"Danny, I have evidence in this case, which also involves Ghostface. When we find clues about Tara, I can focus on her. Right now, I can't do it...
Danny's countenance hardened.
"Someone is looking to divert you from the case, because I assure you Sam is innocent," he opened the door of the police station and proclaimed before leaving. "And I'm going to prove it".
"If you do, I'll let go of Sam immediately and apologize. However, I have a little hunch about this".
As he left the police station, Danny walked lost in his sea of thought, worried about Sam's well-being. The day was quite dark and cold.
"Sam, it can't be"
"Someone tries to blame her for a crime"
He walked two streets to the right.
"But what would they get out of that?"
He stopped at a corner to think about events, squeezing each scene for details he had missed.
"Nothing makes sense"
He continued walking, taking slow steps. He was very worried about Sam. Only a short time he could see her and now, she was in danger...
Pluck... Shrash...
It was the sound of his clothes tearing and his flesh being pierced by the blade of a knife. Danny exhaled hard from fright and agony. Breath escaped from his lungs at the stabbing pain in his back. As he turned around, he saw Ghostface's white mask dislodging the weapon from his back to snap it back into his belly. Danny cringed in pain, exclaiming a very faint groan and putting his hands to the site of the wound. Then, he fell to the ground of the alley where he was. Completely inert.
Ghostface stared at his body for a moment and wiped the blood from the knife with his robe. He had to disappear soon.
He continued his way naturally until he got lost in the immense city...
