Getting out alive
Agent Lopez had already ordered that the dose of medicine be assigned to Sam. It was supposed to be a mixture of risperidone. He hadn't asked in depth what it was about, he just knew that it would do the patient good and needed to monitor her evolution.
Sam Carpenter took it without hesitation because her psychiatrist had not prescribed her again and, obviously, that would be impossible from now on. She needed to find a new specialist.
It was time for her father to let her mind rest for a few days. She needed to focus more on how to find Tara.
Luis and Sam were alerted when they heard a huge tumult from outside. An officer called officer Lopez saying that they were young people making trouble for Sam Carpenter's confinement.
"It looks like you've brought your supporters," Agent Lopez said sarcastically, taking Sam's empty glass.
"They'll explain to you why this is all reverend shit. I'm innocent".
"Good time to check your alibi. We'll see if you get out of here today, Carpenter".
The gendarme left the cell and left a calmer Sam under the fact that she had taken her medication. It was only a matter of time before it took effect. She breathed a sigh of relief when she heard Mindy's shrill voice at the end of the hallway saying that Sam hadn't come back either. The police held her back and tried to calm her down. Chad had already given up. He knew Mindy well, and he knew that in that state it was not convenient to cross her path. He was more focused on looking for a familiar face inside the police station, such as Kirby's face or Sam's own.
Luis immediately called Kirby to give her the news and asked if she was coming back to tidy up the office. She knew those twins better than everyone else and perhaps she was the one with whom they could reason.
Luis came to confront the burly Chad who was looking for answers to what happened.
"I've seen you before with Kirby. You should know what's going on. Sam is missing now." Chad was a little agitated. "Have you heard anything about it? Couldn't it be that Ghostface came for her too?"
Luis indicated that both should calm down to be able to explain the situation at the time. Chad complied with the order, Mindy did so reluctantly, even some police officers wanted to restrain her, but were prevented by a gesture from officer Lopez.
He explained to the twins that Sam was apprehended at the police station for the murder of psychiatrist William Kobach. They needed to check the alibi Sam had provided so they could eliminate her as suspicious.
"Did you first decide to focus on a person totally unrelated to the victim, instead of investigating the relatives first? 85% of murders occur in the family nucleus" Mindy attacked the policeman's point of view straight for the jugular.
Luis was unfazed by the girl's attack on his methods. He just crossed his arms and let out a sarcastic giggle.
"The assassin was wearing a Ghostface robe..."
Mindy was speechless for a moment. However, it was not easy to silence the Meeks blood.
"Maybe the suspect didn't have the money to buy a better costume..."
Chad burst in wanting to see Sam. He wanted to talk to her because he felt it was the best time to tell the authorities the part they both knew before it was too late for Tara. Her life continued on the board and Ghostface was eager to keep moving his pieces. Now, they were wasting time because of these distracting events.
Lopez prevented them from entering the cells and invited them to enter the interrogation room. He also mentioned that Kirby was on her way.
"Where was she?" Mindy asked curiously.
"It's classified information. I can't give details. It will come soon".
They both passed and Lopez closed the door behind him. The silence was sepulchral. Mindy was tense, and Chad was looking at every splinter in the room as he waved his leg anxiously.
"How long have you known Sam Carpenter?" Lopez asked, pulling a pen and notebook from his coat pocket.
Chad, sprawled out on the chair, now without taking his eyes off the policeman, was the one who answered the question.
"We've known her sister Tara since school. We have been your best friends for many years. Sam even came to take care of us when we were kids".
"I see," Luis wrote energetically on the paper. "Did you know about Sam Carpenter's past with the murderer Billy Loomis?"
"No, not at all. We all found out after Ghostface attacked Tara two years ago. That time she almost died at his hands".
"Amber Freeman almost killed her, in the company of Richie Kirsch".
"Yes, but please don't remind us of that chapter of our lives. It's quite traumatic for us and unnecessary for your current investigation," Mindy replied when she saw that Luis was trying to incriminate Sam by digging into the past that he and Kirby probably know perfectly.
"I'm just doing my job, miss. I need the information".
Before Mindy attacked again, the door to the room opened, revealing a sweaty and exhausted Kirby. It had been a long stretch from the other side of the city.
"I didn't expect to see you here so soon, guys. Are you feeling better yet?
"We were looking for answers about Sam's whereabouts, thinking that Ghostface had kidnapped her too, and we found out that you are the kidnappers now," Mindy roared without reproach.
Chad did not take his eyes off the officer. There was something on that policeman that gave him a bad feeling...
"Mindy, it's just protocol. Sam was Kobach's patient, the killer was wearing a Ghostface suit, and we need to check her alibi to be able to free her. Can you tell us where she was two nights ago around nine o'clock at night?"
Chad and Mindy exposed their alibi. Even though Sam was away at that time, they were told that she was not disheveled when she returned. She had no features of struggle, blood or anything.
Kirby and Lopez were convinced. They had to let go of Sam, at least until they got new clues that could incriminate her again. They had no more sense in having her imprisoned.
Mindy and Luis left immediately. Kirby was after them, when suddenly, Chad grabbed her by the arm and implored her to stay.
Officer Lopez turned to see what was happening, and Kirby motioned to leave the room. So, he closed the door behind him.
Mindy immediately asked what was going on.
"I think your brother has something to talk about with Agent Reede," Luis said, glancing sideways at the closed door. "Wait for them in the main room. I'll go to my office for a moment".
Agent Lopez walked away to the opposite side of the hallway, with Mindy's piercing gaze in each of his steps until he moved away from the site. She, noticing that she was alone, went to the living room, knowing that she would have to approach her brother Chad later.
Inside the room there was a thick tension. Chad had to know how the investigation into Tara's whereabouts was going. He was eager to know anything about her.
Kirby had to tell him the truth. They had not paid attention to her disappearance. The murder of Dr. Kobach had been a priority at the time. The lower-ranking officers had carried out search operations without positive results.
"We're doing what we can..."
Chad choked the tears in his eyes. He was frustrated and tired of not getting answers.
"Well, they're not doing enough. Tara is in grave danger".
"Chad..."
"I know what you're guessing, Kirby. You assume that Tara is already dead and that's why you don't put force into the investigation. You think Ghostface wouldn't have any reason to keep her alive." Chad crumbled with every word he uttered. He swallowed hard as he decided he was going to tell her what Sam told him. "What would you do if you told yourself that Ghostface does have a reason to keep Tara alive?"
Kirby then hardened his features and sharpened his eyes. She leaned forward, resting her elbows on her lap attentive to Chad's words.
"What kind of reason? Tell me more..."
"We found out with Sam on a Stab fan forum. One of those users is blackmailing Sam into murdering Sidney Prescott in exchange for Tara's life. Every day, he posts photos of cuts on the skin of whom, probably, Tara's skin is. He said that with each day that passed without fulfilling what he wanted, he was going to make a deeper cut. He will kill her if she does not complete his objective.
Kirby blanched at Chad's testimony. However, it was an excellent clue.
"Come with me," he said suddenly. "Let's review that".
Both left the room. Several footsteps echoed away. Chad and Kirby made their way to the test room where Kirby had Sam's confiscated cell phone in a plastic basket. She took him in her hands and sought Chad's approval with her gaze.
"Check it out".
Sure enough, they entered the forum that Chad mentioned and found the messages between Sam and that user: GhostMaster66. Chad wasn't lying. Photos of the cuts were also there, including the one from that day, showing a long bloody cut on bruised skin.
"You say it could be Tara?"
"I know those photos are of your skin. I know her well".
Kirby raised an eyebrow and glanced at him sideways.
"Okay..."
Agent Lopez suddenly entered.
"Agent Reede. I was already wondering if he was still in the interrogation..."
"Lopez, release Sam Carpenter right now. And give her predicted medication".
"Will it be ruled out as a suspect?" Lopez was surprised by his boss's ruling.
"Just release her immediately, Lopez," she ordered in a firmer tone in his face as he was questioning her authority.
Chad also coldly observed the officer who obeyed without mentioning any other words. After he left, Kirby referred to Chad again.
"I recommend you don't tell Sam about this talk," she suggested, putting the phone back in the place of the confiscated things.
"Excuse me?"
Kirby left the room with a confused Chad behind her.
"Sam may be your friend or just your girlfriend's sister, however, that doesn't take away from the fact that she has mental imbalances from time to time. They may react badly if they find out that you told the police about this".
"But... Will you help us get Tara to safety?" Chad didn't understand why Kirby's position. "Why would Sam think that?"
"I simply recommend you not to do it. For their sake and yours. You know that when Ghostface decides to play, everyone on the board is suspicious," the blonde's gaze blackened as she uttered those words.
Chad stopped his walk and was worried about that. He was left alone in the hallway processing what she had told him. Kirby was suspicious of Sam as well. She did not consider Sam sane. However, the very fact of Kirby's distrust of Sam made him distrust Kirby as well.
His heart rate quickened, and he feared for Tara. He feared for Mindy. He feared for Sam. He feared for himself. But especially for Tara. He implored that she would still be alive and that Ghostface would not be deceiving them. He feared that Ghostface's new strategy was to separate them all at the level of distrust and be able to finish them off one by one. Chad didn't want to be left alone. Fear was a blunt sword. It was difficult to penetrate your skin gently, but if it was stuck in one fell swoop it would be painful to dislodge it. This Ghostface was patient, like a perfect predator and psychopath. He waited for the right moment to enter triumphantly and give the precise attack. He was someone so twisted and intelligent, something that they as a group have not seen before.
He jumped in fear at the hand that landed on his shoulder. Sam's worried eyes were now on his.
"Chad, are you okay?"
"Sam..." he stumbled in his words. "I'm glad you're okay...."
"It looks like you've seen a ghost..."
"Something like that, Sam".
The two hugged each other. In the middle of the gesture, Chad noticed Officer Lopez's presence. He was escorting Sam to the exit. He stared at him, defiantly, as if something was hiding from him. He got rid of the hug and cut off the gaze with Lopez with disdain. Indeed, this man generated him a great distrust.
He came out with Sam grabbing his arm and Mindy stood up as soon as she spotted them. Mindy ran to hug Sam. Officer Lopez didn't make it all the way down the hall, stopped and said one last thing that only Chad could hear.
"When we hear from Tara, we'll get in touch..."
Chad didn't answer. He only gave the policeman a not so pleasant look. Lopez simply retired to finish his work.
Kirby was waiting for him in her office. She was in front of the computer, massaging her forehead.
"We need to find Tara Carpenter. Now it is urgent for us.
Lopez took the folder with the investigation she had requested and placed it suddenly on the table.
"What about the analysis of the case from a year ago?"
"I still can't believe they haven't taken inventory of the evidence for months and found out this incompetence," Kirby was definitely very angry.
"Something must have gone wrong when the scene was raided. They couldn't find the two main masks: Billy Loomis' mask and Stu Macher's mask, the two original Ghostfaces.
"If I could, I would have confiscated them myself," Kirby growled. "If only I hadn't had a damn knife stuck in my gut".
"And I still wasn't transferred to this case with you, so I wouldn't have been able to support you," Luis replied mockingly.
"They're the largest police force in the nation, and yet they can be the most incompetent," the FBI agent grumbled. "Well, do you want to hear what I just heard?"
"I'm all ears..."
Kirby sprawled out on her seat.
"Make yourself comfortable, it's a great story..."
Elsewhere, Sam and Mindy waited on the sidewalk while Chad hailed a taxi. Sam was calm, the medications were already taking effect. She felt a little drowsy and disoriented, so Mindy grabbed her arm.
"A damn waste of time. These cops are incompetent. Also, not how much Kirby herself gets so tangled, if solving a Ghostface case is never that complicated.
"As you say... I just want to go home..." Sam judged Mindy's words.
The taxi parked in front of them and Chad opened the door for the girls. He indicated the direction to the driver and sat in the passenger seat.
"We'll go to our apartment."
Mindy suddenly interrupted and ordered the driver not to move.
"Doesn't that sound too obvious? Let's not go to our apartment. It's the first place Ghostface would look for us".
"Of course, Mindy, I'm telling everyone I know our address."
"You just gave our address to a complete stranger".
"It's the taxi driver, Mindy! Dammit!"
"You know that anyone can wear the mask..."
Sam smiled a little, and Chad was pulling the hairs on his head.
"Well, you win. But where could we go?"
"I know the perfect place where we can hide..."
Chad and Sam looked at each other suspiciously. Mindy's head could feel a little strange at times...
