Fraternity

The taxi took them to Blackmore University's Kappa Rho fraternity house. Chad didn't like the idea very much. "Mindy, I don't know if you noticed that Kappa Rho is a GIRL fraternity!"

"Don't worry, I won't send you to sleep on the grass. I have a plan," Mindy said as she climbed the steps of the fraternity. Sam was stumbling after her. She needed to rest for a while so that her body could assimilate the drug she had just consumed. "Do you remember Lola? The girl I dated a few months ago? I know from her that Erin, Tara's friend, lives around here. We can stay with her and her chubby friend... What's his name?"

Chad was the voice of negativity in the group. "Your plan is to stay with them, instead of quietly going to our apartment? Are you serious, Mindy?!"

"Ghostface would find us easy there".

"But what guarantees do you have that they will receive us?""

"If Erin doesn't get us, we can go to the chubby guy's apartment... He adored Tara, didn't he? Also, it's better to be around more people".

"We can't trust anyone else, Mindy," Chad proclaimed.

This time, Sam joined Chad. In her sleepy voice she tried to say, "I think Chad is right this time, Mindy..."

"Look how you're, Sam. You need to rest".

Mindy approached the fraternity building and greeted Lola. The two had a conversation while Chad held the head of a sleepy Sam on his shoulder. Lola suddenly went inside the fraternity and came back after a few minutes accompanied by another girl; Erin. Mindy told her about the situation and asked for asylum, obviously omitting the part about them doing that because Ghostface was chasing them. She made up the excuse that the police had also seized her apartment for clues. An unbelievable reason, Mindy thought, but enough to convince Erin. However, she mentioned that she lived in the fraternity and since it was only for girls, she wouldn't be able to receive Chad. Still, she had a better idea.

She called Alfie, her best friend, and told him about the situation. Alfie did not refuse to accept the Core Four, now sadly Core Three, into his apartment, which was not far from there. Erin pointed out to Mindy where Alfie's apartment was a few blocks from the fraternity building and said she would go after them after making a small bag with what she had to take to stay overnight. She re-entered the building and Mindy returned victorious to break the news to those who were waiting for her. "What happened?" An upset Chad said.

"I am a person who always resolves, my dear brother. Come on, follow me! We will have a sleepover at Alfie's place".

Chad and Sam began to follow Mindy's hustle and bustle. "That boy?"

"Do we have anyone else who can support us? I don't want to sleep under a bridge or tell Kirby to lend us a cell for the three of us".

"We could have called Gale" Sam said.

"Mistake!" Mindy yelled, making an "x" with her fingers. "It's an invitation for Ghostface to kill us. And I still don't want to die. I have a lot to do before that".

Chad found it curious that Sam suggested staying with Gale. Most likely, she has Sidney in good safety. It was beginning to fall, and the temperature dropped. Mindy cursed that she didn't bring a coat as she followed in the footsteps of Erin, who was leading the way. She had a rather attractive walk, despite being a girl of small stature. She was probably the same or a little taller than the Tara. When noticing her sister's suspicious behavior, Chad pulled her arm and mentioned that it was not the time to be flirtatious. They had to find Tara first. "Without clues we can't do much. All that remains is to wait".

Sam gingered up when she heard her sister's name spoken from the mouths of her friends. Erin slowed down, because she was also one of the closest to Tara since the day, they both decided to enter the extracurricular activities of the college football team. The black-haired and short girl had always been quite nice to her, even Erin came to doubt that this attraction to the youngest of the Carpenters was just that, mere attraction. She loved Tara's pure and pleasant energy. However, days before her disappearance, Tara was becoming more distant. She was more attached to her friend Alfie and her own sister Sam. For the moment, Erin kept her stance at bay in front of Sam. She seemed harmless enough, as if sleepy. She knew that she used medication to reduce her psychiatric problems. That made the voice of her conscience repeat to her over and over again that it was not wise enough to take Billy Loomis's daughter to her best friend's apartment and spend the night with her in the same place.

"I need Ghostface to call back. I need to find him. I feel like Tara can die at any moment, and it's all because of me..."

Erin continued to lead the way and with her back to the group suggested in a very serious voice some words that the group had never heard coming from her.

"Don't ask for that, or that psychopath may appear..."

Chad and Mindy didn't pay much attention to the brunette's comment, but the words resonated loudly in Sam's head. Something deep inside her had awakened, causing her whole body to tense. It was like a red flag about Erin. "Guys," she said, calling Chad and Mindy. "I think it's more convenient to stay in your apartment..."

Mindy grumbled in confusion, arching one of her eyebrows. "Really, Sam? We didn't walk that far to get back to where we were. Besides, it's more dangerous to stay there. Ghostface would look for us over there obviously".

"What's wrong Sam?" Chad asked, stopping abruptly.

"Do we really have to trust her?" Sam murmured in the twins' ears. "I have a pang that tells me not to go to that apartment".

"Do you have Spiderman's powers now?" Mindy asked mockingly. "I have no other plan where we can be safe".

"I don't think Erin is Ghostface, she's too delicate and small for the robe. Besides, she was quite attached to Tara," Chad said and was true. Those two were like flesh and nail between classes.

"So much so?" Sam swore she heard that girl's name few times from Tara's mouth. "As far as I know, they were just college classmates".

"They were together in almost all classes. Tara spent her free hours in the fraternity house, we went out at night to have a few drinks, among many other adventures here and there," Chad justified with the truth in his mouth because he was also a participant in many of those escapades.
"And why am I just finding out about that right now?"

"Maybe because since what happened a year ago, you were giving your little sister more freedom," Mindy mocked with one hand on her waist.

Then Erin stopped and turned to the group of friends. Disappointment was drawn on her face and her eyes were glazed over. The group were stunned to see her like this. "I would never be able to hurt Tara... I want everything to return to the way it was before. I miss her so much...

Chad just gave an 'I told you so' look and Mindy held out her hand showing Sam what it caused. "Isn't that enough proof?"

Sam didn't break her seriousness when she saw Erin crying. "Not at all".

"Believe me or not, I'll tell you the whole truth," Erin said, continuing her way.

When they arrived at the apartment block, Erin was still in tears. Alfie received them and was surprised to see her in that state. He was unable to ask her what had happened because she only limited herself to entering without greeting to seclude herself in the furthest place in the corridor. Alfie asked the other boys through signs; Chad was the one who answered that they already explained everything to him. They entered the site. Everything was maintained in exhausting neatness. It didn't look like the apartment of an average college student. Alfie, like any good lover of video games and Japanese culture, had adorned the entire place with lots of posters, figurines and ornaments of his favorite anime, movies and games. Chad loved to visit the chubby guy, whenever he went, he found a new figurine. "I have snacks and soft drinks. I pushed the couch away from the living room and put the sleeping bags, sheets, and pillows to sleep all together there. You know, to protect each other".

Mindy was the first to lie down on the handful of pillows. Chad followed her by sitting in a sleeping bag and taking one of Alfie's computers to enter the Stab forums in case there were any new clues or anything that could tell them of Tara's whereabouts. Erin was in the bathroom wiping away tears and being comforted by Alfie. Sam watched her movements intently. Both girls stared at each other. Erin's eyes looked at Sam with disdain and distrust. "I want to find Tara alive, as much as you," Erin sobbed, clutching Alfie's T-shirt, who was slightly taller than her, but much shorter than Sam. "Even if you don't want to, I'll help you find her, even if you think I'm Ghostface".

Alfie was surprised to hear that. He confronted Sam gaining the attention of Mindy and Chad in response. "Erin wouldn't hurt a single insect. She would never do something like that".

Mindy, with her legs crossed and her body forward, sucked on a lollipop. To counter Alfie's assertion, she pulled it out of her mouth and pointed with it to both of them.

"That's what an accomplice would say..."

Chad closed the computer to pay attention to the scene.

"If you distrust us so much, you shouldn't have come here in the first place," Erin muttered, holding back the urge to break down in tears again.

"Keep your enemies as close as possible," said the slasher expert while putting the lollipop back in her mouth.

"In these instances, Ghostface could be anyone," Sam said, leaning against the wall.

"True," Chad continued. "He may be the best friend obsessed with the sister of Billy Loomis' daughter, the reporter in search of a juicy story for a new book..."

"The police who want to solve the biggest case of their life," Mindy pointed to Alfie. "Perhaps the chubby friend madly in love with the victim who forcibly desires his love..."

"Hey, wait! Not me...!"

"Could it be an out-of-mind relative with a thirst for blood?" Erin said looking at Sam.

Erin's words echoed within Sam's mind. She did understand that they were specifically directed to her. She recalled the argument she had with her mother after they decided to leave Woodsboro for New York. How her mother also decided to move to The Big Apple to ensure Tara's well-being and to be able to take her away from her made her gag. She hadn't considered her own mother as a possible suspect.

"At this point, I may even be a complete stranger who has started a cult of Ghostface. A psychopath obsessed with the story of Sam and Tara and keeps the memory of Gale and Sidney".

Mindy sprawled on the pillows. "We must not forget the love interest. That's the old reliable one," the girl exclaimed, pointing surreptitiously at Sam, referring to Danny. "Chad, if your last stated is true, we are truly fucked up..."

Chad noticed how Sam was deep in thought. Something was not right. She had grabbed her cell phone and left the room to talk in privacy. Sam marked her mother. She needed to talk to her. At the first ringing she did not get any answer. Neither does the second. She was about to dial for the third time when she saw that she called back.

Sam?

Mom?

Have you heard from Tara?

No, Mom. Nothing.

Alright. And you, is everything okay?

It could be better, mom.

I'm glad to hear it. Notify me if you hear from Tara, okay? I'm busy now.

Sam wanted to swallow the bitter words she wanted to say to her mother. A bunch of them she could not keep to herself.

Busy consuming, I must imagine...

There was a brief silence on the other end of the receiver. Her mother sighed wearily.

Sam. I've been staying clean for quite some time, but...

Obviously, you weren't going to be able to last. As always, you return to the filthy pit full of shit. It's so deep that you have to have it right under your nose.

Sam! Shut up. You don't know what I suffer.

Of course I know! You influenced me to follow that path! What differentiates us is that you keep sinking and I climbed every day to get out of the shit that surrounds me. Tara and I do it to deal with the trauma, I do it to quit drugs and stop having my violent thoughts. Every day I try hard, and no one seems to notice!

Without realizing it, Sam banged her fist on a table causing some picture frames to be flipped, causing Chad to get up to see if she was okay.

Sam, I shouldn't have called you back. Just call me if you hear from Tara.

Actually, Mom... That was the reason for my call. I wanted YOU to tell me if you have any news from Tara.

Chad tensed up as he realized what Sam was hinting at her mother. He looked at Mindy who couldn't believe the new theory. "I give up, this is a damn mess..."

Don't say stupid things Sam. I wouldn't kidnap Tara.

I don't know, Mom. Your actions are also somewhat irregular at times.

Could it be that you seek to blame others to atone for your own demons? The police will soon discover the truth. They will put you in a psychiatric hospital, where you truly belong.

So that you can live with Tara and I won't be a bother to you...

Believe what you want. I don't mind. But I, unlike you, don't have fucking blood on my hands.
"I have to check that... Goodbye mother" Sam's voice at the end has a harsh and violent tone.

And she hung up the call, clenching the cell phone in her hand. She looked at Chad without raising her head and he remained cautious as he noticed the anger she was giving off.

"I hadn't thought she might be trying to wipe me off the map, too".

"You should tell Kirby".

"No, not yet. I have to know which side Kirby is playing for first," she pointed to Erin and Alfie. "I hope I can trust you guys. Trust is something I'm losing faster and faster. But I need someone to or I feel like I'll go crazy".

Alfie readily agreed. Erin, folding her arms, hesitated. "If you decide to trust me, that's your problem. However, I don't trust you".

Sam didn't respond. She went back to her cell phone screen. She searched the call log for the number Ghostface had called the same night Dr. Kobach was murdered. Chad tried to stop her. She was the first one who dared to call Ghostface back. As expected, the phone was flagged as non-existent. Ghostface wasn't an idiot. He had probably used a disposable phone to execute that call and disposed of the device after that.

"I want a fucking clue! Now you decide to hide, you psycho!" Sam repeatedly hit the table and accidentally broke a swan-shaped glass ornament between the picture frames. Her hand was covered with shards of glass and blood gushed from the cuts. However, Sam just cried her heart out in Chad's arms.

The boy hugged her and began to cry as well. Mindy got up to join her friends in mourning. The Core Four was not complete without the youngest member. They cried inconsolably, melting into an embrace.

"Tara! " Sam cried plaintively, causing everyone in the room to tense up.

Alfie and Erin were just bystanders to the heartbreaking mourning scene. Erin's tears seemed insignificant next to the pain in front of them and Alfie didn't know how to react. He just bowed his head respectfully and grasped his friend's hand.

No one was going to get any sleep that night....
