One of a Kind
"Come on, Queenie!"
Ashley rolled into the theatre. She had been discharged from the hospital a week ago, and was forced into a wheelchair. She didn't mind it though, but it made life a bit difficult.
"I'm here, Rin, calm down."
She sighed and put on a smile. She wore her black SiX jacket over a simple white tee, and a black and white plaid skirt.
"You look amazing, Ash. Drop the fake smile. Everyone's waiting to see you."
Ashley scowled. "I'm fine. I don't need the cast coming and worrying over me."
Erin rolled her eyes and knelt down to meet Ashley's.
"Ginny, look. No one expects you to grin and bear it. Remember when my arm was sprained when we were kids, and you acted like it was the end of the world?"
Ashley nodded, smiling softly.
"Well, you told me that everything will be OK, and things will get better. And here I am, almost 14 years later, repeating those same words."
Ashley smile grew. "Thanks, Rin."
Erin ruffled Ashley's hair. "Of course. Now, are we going to go in?"
Ashley nodded and Erin guided her to the stage, where the Queens were waiting.
"QueenBean!"
Ashley smiled as Mille gave her a hug.
"Hey, guys."
"How are you, Caramel," Natalie asked. Ashley shrugged.
"I've been better. I just wish I hadn't left."
"It is not your fault," Grace said, "You didn't know."
"Yeah."
Courtney popped up next to her and handed her a thermos.
"What do I need this for," Ashley asked.
"It's filled with hot chocolate, Missy," Courtney explained, "To make you feel better."
Ashley smiled. "Thanks."
As Erin pushed her through the theater, Ashley felt incredibly guilty. If she hadn't gone out that night, she wouldn't be stuck in a wheelchair.
Rascal whined, and Erin put him on Ashley's lap, and he curled up and looked up at her.
"Hey," she said, "How are you, my big boy?"
He yipped and licked her face. She laughed and held him up.
"OK, boy! I get it!"
She heard Erin's little giggle and she looked up. "What's so funny?"
"He feels so comfortable with you. When I got the pups, Rascal seemed so wary of me. He warmed up to you easily, though."
Ashley laughed and stroked Rascal. "Well, it explains why you're so tame with me, boy. I'm glad you're here."
As she rolled over to the stage, Erin placed her over to a corner just below the Ladies in Waiting, and she sat as the Queens did their warmups.
"Don't worry, Partner," Grace said, "You'll be back on your feet in no time!"
Ashley smiled, but her stomach was swirling. What if she didn't? What if she'll never get better? After all that happened, she wouldn't be surprised if she was handicapped forever.
"Ugh, news, guys," Vicki said, "I have to go cover Cleves today, since Jaye'J, Natalie, Lexi aren't available, due to sudden leaves of absence."
"So Courtney and I can do Aragon and Seymour," Grace said, "Don't worry."
And that was that. Or was it?
***
It was two hours before the show, and Grace felt ill. She didn't want to tell the cast, since Shaka was also busy for another Six cast, so if she walked, the show would be cancelled.
But she couldn't speak, or barely walk, so she had to tell the cast.
"I'm sorry," she said hoarsely, "But I can't do Seymour today. I'm sorry to say the show might be cancelled."
But that's when Ashley perked up. "Don't we have mic stands? You know, like a concert?"
Erin found some. "Yeah, why?"
Ashley grinned. "I could go on for one of the Queens in my wheelchair, and we'll have a concert tonight!"
"Queenie, that's a wonderful idea!"
Ashley grinned, and she was put in her dressing room, and with a bit of help, was able to put on her Aragon costume for the first time since her tech week.
As she curled her hair, Courtney came in wearing her costume.
"Oh, you look amazing, Missy," she exclaimed, giving Ashley a hug.
"Thanks. I just hope I'm able to do this today."
"You will," Courtney said, "You'll do great!"
Ashley grabbed her water bottle and nodded. "Thanks."
***
Everything was in place, and Ashley couldn't believe they managed to do this.
Just as the show was about to start, all of the Queens met backstage.
"You ready to blow the audience's mind," Vicki asked. Ashley shrugged.
"I just hope we'll be able to do this."
"We will be," Maiya said, "And you'll do great!"
Ashley nodded, and Millie helped Ashley as they got to the stage.
The cheering started as soon as they saw the Queens, and the show began.
"Divorced!"
"Beheaded!"
"Died!"
"Divorced!"
"Beheaded!"
"Survived!"
Ashley couldn't believe how loud the cheering was. She pulled down the mic stand and grinned.
"And today, London, we are!"
All of the Queens shouted, and the cheering was insane, and Ashley knew this was going to be an amazing show.
***
"For five, four, three, two, one more minutes!"
Ashley couldn't believe what they had accomplished. The show had been incredible, and everyone was cheering and it was insane.
"We're SiX!"
The Queens raised their arms into the iconic pose and the cheering was deafening. Ashley couldn't stop smiling.
"London," Aimie yelled, "Do you wanna hear one more song?"
Ashley grinned as the cheering blared.
"Then for Ashley, everyone stay on your feet! Hit it, Maria!"
Ashley grabbed her mic off the stand. "London, get on your feet and clap your hands!"
Millie put a hand on her shoulder and grinned.
"Make some noise for Maggie!"
Even though they didn't leave their stands, the Queens still danced, and they all grinned.
"Are you ready? London! Here we go!"
Ashley was first, and her massive grin never left her face.
"You must think that I'm crazy," she yelled, "You wanna replace me? Baby, there's-"
The other Queens backed her up, and Ashley felt pride in what they'd accomplished today.
"If you thought you could leave me, you must think I'm naïve! Please believe me, there's-"
As Mille began her solo, she wrapped her arm around Ashley's shoulders and squeezed her in a side-hug.
"I'm just tryna have some fun!"
Ashley scowled and looked at her. "N-n-no way!"
The rest of the MegaSiX was incredible, but right during Maiya's lines, Courtney took Ashley's wheelchair just as they formed a line.
"We're so much more than-"
"Divorced," Ashley yelled, grinning massively.
"Beheaded," Mille said from behind, then moving to her corner.
"Died," Courtney shouted, and she helped Ash get to her corner.
"Divorced," Vicki said, and Aimie and Maiya finished their lines.
"Beheaded!"
"Survived!"
"We're-"
Just as the beat dropped, Ashley held her mic to her face and shouted.
"SiX!"
The cheering was massive, and Ashley barely remembered much. Maiya grabbed someone's phone, and she waved it to Ashley, who waved and smiled.
"You were amazing! Thank you!"
The Queens helped Ashley to get to her dressing room, where Mille and Vicki helped her take off her costume.
"Queenie, that was amazing! You were a powerhouse, and you were still in your wheelchair!"
"Thank you! I'm just glad we pulled this off."
"Under other circumstances, we wouldn't have," Vicki said, "If you hadn't given us that amazing idea of using mic stands, we wouldn't have had a show!"
Ashley's grin was even more massive than before when she reached stage door. The cheering was incredibly loud, and she felt extremely proud.
"Thank you, everyone," she said, "Your support helped us accomplish so much today!"
As she was brought in from the of the crowds, Ashley and the Queens all made an unspoken promise.
No matter how, or what, the show will always go on.
