Chapter 2: Pride And Gluttony

Pride- The excessive belief in one's own abilities. It is the irrational notion that one is essentially better, superior or more important than others and is the excessive admiration of the personal image of one's self.

Gluttony- An inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires. It is the overindulgence and overconsumption of anything to the point of waste, essentially valuing one's own impulse or interests over others.

(Y/n) stared at the male that stood tall and vainglorious in front of the pair, as though gracing them with his mere presence. His violet eyes holding a stern coldness to them as he directed his attention towards the both of them.

The older man politely bowed towards the boy as his voice went down an octave in a show of respect towards the younger individual. "Please accept my sincerest apologies Master Padraig, but this girl approached the premises without permission and tried to break into the-"

"That's not true!" (Y/n) snapped out of her stunned state to turn towards the younger male, realising her chances of an explanation would be most thriving towards the boy. Meanwhile, the uniformed male growled in disapproval before straightening back up to regard the speaking girl with a challenging look. The female ignored his attempts at intimidation before directing her composure towards the impatient looking boy. "I'm here on behalf of my mother. She...had a terrible accident here today and I came here to ask for permission if I could take over her place if possible." She heard discouraging scoffs from the older man that silently sent her distrustful gazes. "Are you the owner or head figure of this house?"

At the sound of her inquiry, the boy immediately puffed out his chest and raised his chin in a strong posture. "You have a good eye for spotting an elite and magnificent aristocrat such as myself. Of course I would be deemed the authority figure around this place. You might even say I own this building based on how much I take charge for it." The boy loudly stated, keeping on beat with his flowing and superior tone as he crossed his arms in an elegant finale. "Nori, you can trust that I'll take over from here. This business shall be delt with accordingly thanks to my exquisite interrogating skills...now step off my precious masterpiece before you ruin the cement!"

The man immediately stepped away from the podium of the statue and took a gracious bow in an apologetic manner. "A thousand apologies Master Padraig. But Sir, please rethink your consideration of the girl, she clearly doesn't go to St Mary, I do not think-"

"I have a letter and ID." The female interrupted the suspecting man, earning an inward grunt of disgust from the action, but proceeded with her coaxing. "Please, I simply want to discuss working here in my mother's place until she recovers. I have evidence if you need it." The violet eyed male nodded at her proposal before turning his attention towards the aggravated man.

"You can go now Nori, I'll take care of everything from here." With great reluctance, Nori swallowed his protests back at the command of his superior, before acceptingly nodding in respectful understand. As he walked away from the pair, he refused to take his doubtful and conniving gaze away from the girl before disappearing completely.

(Y/n) exhaled in relief as her problems began fixing themselves and prepared to thank the boy who had spared her before noticing an aggressive scowl was being applied towards her. The girl was slightly taken aback by the insulted look in the male's eyes and thought for a second he would greet her with the same treatment as the previous individual.

"For the love of all that's good and pure, will you step away from my exquisite statue!" The female jumped at the excessive tone he shot at her and laterally hopped off the marble podium and back onto the ground. She gazed at the large figure that loomed under the heavens and felt slight shame from the degrading vocals the male had used to ward her off.

'He made this...?' She impressively lingered over the towering figure in slight admiration before her attention was dragged back by a set of chuckles.

"I know. No need for words! My beautiful work of art is meant to be silently admired as you gaze upon its majestic form and shape, like looking into infinity itself!" The boy's entire body tensed with energy as passion and sparks flew in his eyes. He held his head high as he proudly placed a hand on his chest to define his involvement in the process of creation. "Of course, such a glorious production would never have been conceived had these hands of perfection never moulded it. You may now pay tribute to these gifts of the Gods!" He spread his arms out in a glorifying gesture as he allowed the sun to bask his form in the light while the female could only stare at him in bewilderment.

"Uhm...I jut want to talk about my position Sir." The boy disappointingly slouched his arms back down as the previous glow of the sun became obstructed by a cloud, leaving him in a moping condition as his hype was ruined. "My name is (Y/n) (L/n). My mother worked as a cleaner here before she was sent to hospital. I would like to discuss working arrangements if you're the person that is in charge of employing." The male immediately straightened back up with a cocky smile that seemed more knowing than the reality.

"I'm in charge of everything you can name. My great social and leadership skills are worthy of any task!" The boy crossed his arms in a haughty gesture before straightening his back tall with dignity. "This is my home after all."

"Master Padraig, wasn't this your home two years ago before you sold it off?" The dark haired male nearly jumped at the sound of a new voice ring in in the air. He begrudgingly turned around to look at the third individual. Behind him stood a young man that held a cautious smile as he approached the boastful boy.

"Zak I've told you before not to contradict my verdict! I say how it is and I don't need you to-"

"But it's not like that..." The male awkwardly held his owlish smiled, trying to ease the tension as he understood the risk of poking fun at the boy before him. "Hello Miss, if you need me to bring you to someone who can handle this arrangement then I can take you to Mr Kim." The female felt slightly flustered at the confusing information that was fed to her as she kept flicking her gaze from the long haired aristocrat to the newcomer.

"I'm sorry, to who am I supposed to speak to about this?" The girl uncoordinatedly switched her attention from either boy, leaving Padraig to huff in irritation before turning away from the group to smoulderingly sulk at the admitted misguidance.

"That would be me Miss. Please come this way." The uniformed male gestured for the girl to kindly follow him.

"I would have made a much more suitable employer than anyone else! Don't come begging me for a job if you get put off." He pointed at the female with a challenging gaze earning a heavily bewildered and puzzled look from the baffled girl. (Y/n) couldn't grasp his attitude for the life of her and had to depend on the sheltering atmosphere of the third individual.

"Master Padraig, is that bird droppings I see on the statue?" The sparkling aura that surrounded every once of the boy's body disappeared as his self-esteem went down at the information. The hyperbolized male quickly ran to the podium and frantically inspected the cement creature for any imperfections.

"My stone child! What kind of foul bird would obscure your beautify with its faeces?! Why?!" He desperately fell on his knees before the large figure, as though unworthy of standing tall over a his tainted work.

"Will he be ok...?"

The uniformed worker nodded in reassurance before pulling the girl along to silently leave the boy to grieve. As they made their way towards the doors, the female felt her heart stop at the largeness of the entrance area as she could count all the things she would be in charge of cleaning while working in the compound. The polished floor would serve her enough time to spend the whole day on, as well as each silken curtain that was draped around each window in an elegant display. She stared towards the stairs that would inevitably be mopped, as well as the stands and desks that would need dusting after a short while.

(Y/n) felt slightly unprepared for the large responsibility, especially when she had only seen a part of the first floor, but after giving a pep talk to herself inside her head to gain some encouragement she flushed out the negativity as she thought of her family. The girl was snapped out of her thoughts as she was lightly pushed in by her guide.

"Please this way Miss, we need to go to the second floor and find Master Seok. He was the last one to talk to Mr Kim so he should know where he would be before he leaves." The male didn't even wait for the female to utter her agreement or enquiry before he swiftly headed towards the stairs. After realising his pacing was too unpredictable, the boy slowed down his footing to allow the girl to quickly catch up. "I do apologise if I'm a bit too quick. It's a habit I've gained while working here. My name is Zachariah but you can refer to me as Zak if it's easier." He assuringly grinned at the female before leading her down a long silent hall. (Y/n) felt an uneasy awkwardness to only the pattering sound of their feet against the carpeted floor, so she considered the small talk a welcoming motion.

"I'm (Y/n). Do you work here Sir?" The boy chuckled at the formalities before giving a confirming nod.

"Yes I work as the servant here. Though I honestly don't like that title..." He uncomfortably scratched his head with slight irritation over his label. The female assessed the uniform he wore and began quickly picking up on familiar aspects that she recognised from a previous person.

"I was approached by another man that was dressed like you. Does he work here as well?" The boy remained thoughtful for a second before his face light up with recognition of the possible identity of the character in question.

"Oh, you must have met Nori then. He works as the butler here, and I do apologise if he acted a bit 'cautious' towards you. He tends to distrust people so don't take it to heart." (Y/n) felt slightly on edge at the prospect of working around someone as abrasive as her assailant.

"What about that other guy that was bossing him around?"

"You mean Master Padraig? He's a student at the school, so he's one of the people we serve here." (Y/n) felt her mind splitting into numerous pieces as all the explanations she was receiving only furthered her confusion. "You don't seem to know too much about the system that runs this, do you...?" The girl unpleasantly nodded as she confessed her insufficient knowledge over her parent's occupation. "I guess I can explain it as-"

Before Zak had a chance to utter a single word of his clarification, a set of doors burst open in their path way, surprising the pair as shouts and screams emerged from the entrance right before a figure ran onto the scene. The two stared at the the male that was blaring his horrified screeches as he tried to extinguish the fire that was rising high over his hair. "I told you not to use the microwave!"

The swivet man disappeared down the hallway, completely oblivious to the girl and male that were stumped by the scene. (Y/n) turned her attention back to the open doors that he had previously shot out of to hear apologetic shrieks of a more feminine tone. "Chief! Duck and roll, you'll spread the flames!" A girl ran ahead towards the endangered male's direction, disregarding the two people that became witness to the crisis.

"Oh dear, I might need to step in and offer my help." Zak sincerely apologised to the girl before heading in the pursuit of the two individuals in need of assistance. (Y/n) lightly accepted the gesture with surprised uncertainty before staring down the silent path that had previously displayed the unexpected scenario.

"...W-wait! Where do I go from here?!" The girl shouted down vacant area in hopes of gaining a confirming response before her expectancy was returned with silence. 'I should really start opening my mouth and stop letting my guard down...' She irritatingly scolded herself before looking back towards he path she had been heading. 'He mentioned finding a 'Seok' or 'Mr Kim'...maybe I'll find someone to ask if I look around.'

The female hesitantly took her first steps on the lone journey as she speculated around her environment. The girl cautiously made uncertain progress as she assessed each mystery door that came in her path, realising the scale of liability she was putting on her shoulders.

'Mum had to clean everything here...? I need to give it everything I have if I'm to do her justice.' The girl's expression straightened into a serious visage that prepared her for the work ahead. 'But before that, I seriously need to ask for some sort of directions...maybe I'll find someone in one of the rooms.' (Y/n) stopped herself at an arbitrary door. She sucked in a deep breath to calm down her nervousness before she reluctantly lifted her knuckles up to knock them against the surface of the closed entrance. She awaited for a few seconds in anticipating silence before her queasiness dissolved into slight disappointment from the inexistent response.

(Y/n) prepared to step away from the room and try her luck with another area when her ears were perked by the sound of loud and sharp crashes of porcelain and cutlery shattering and scattering beyond the closed doors. The girl reflexively grabbed onto the handle with curiosity and concern fuelling her judgement to invade the privacy of the person inside.

Upon entering, the female was nearly taken off balance as her foot just barely managed to avoid the stack of plates and utensils that were propped up in front of the door. (Y/n) wobbled around in her place before stabilising her dizzy posture and proceeded to analyse the rest of her environment to be rendered bewildered as she gazed around the stacks upon stacks of porcelain and silverware spreading across the room, only managing to be obscured by the bags worth of wrappers and empty packets that littered the area. (Y/n) would have been fairly appalled at the irresponsible treatment of the quarters had she not been in awe at the magnificent chaos that was washed over the room.

The female glossed her eyes over her surroundings in hopes of find the source of the sounds. She individually looked over each unkempt area with a detective eye for any anomalies. Her notice was swiftly grabbed as a quick shift occurred at the corner of her eye, forcing the girl's sights on the suspecting movements.

(Y/n) locked eyes with a pair of bright and curious orange ones as her stare was returned with an equally confused one. She was carefully watching a fairly well nourished young boy with neatly short brown hair, holding a large spoon in his hand while the other was occupied with supporting a plate of a towering delicacy that seemed larger than his head by comparison. The pair remained at a state down as neither was inclined to break the ice and inquire on the other's identity. As the girl prepared to mutter out her puzzled words, the boy's eyes brightened as he swiftly jumped up towards the female, expertly balancing the wobbling food on his plate as though performing a circus act.

(Y/n) nearly stumbled back into the services, her body instinctively retracted from the male's swift motions. When her back became compressed with the wall, the female held in a surprised scream as the boy's face stopped inches away from her own to intensely gawk at her. "What is this missing?" Out came a speculative but friendly voice that exasperatedly yearned for the girl's response.

(Y/n) opened her mouth to utter her bewilderment, only for her speech to be substituted by the spoon that was quickly placed in her mouth. As the cutlery was retracted, it left the eatable content it held at the girl's tongue to be judged. The female prepared to quickly swallow the food in a rush to interact with the male, however the delectable taste of the cooked goods seemed to take away all her words as all that her mouth wanted to do was properly taste the delicious treat. The girl momentarily separated herself form the rest of the world as her taste buds were invaded with the bittersweet combo that gave her pleasant shivers along her arms, while her critical analysis picked up on the needed ingredient. "Hm...could use some paprika..."

The male processed her suggestion with careful consideration before running back to the space he had previously popped out of and carelessly sent pepper shakers and bags of herbs along with salt grinders flying through the air, before letting out a confirming gasp as he hopped up with the seasoning he was searching for. He added the dressing to his meal before testing its new flavour with discerning cation. "Perfetto! Absolutely well chosen! Thank you!" The boy appreciatively turned towards the girl with a thankful daze before a realisation began slipping in as he came down from his cloud to finally comprehend the situation presented to him. "...Who are you, by the way?"

(Y/n) hummed along in confusion before snapping herself to avoid making the same mistakes as before. "I'm sorry if I've disturbed you, but I really need some sort of directions. I'm a bit lost..." The male still seemed fairly fuddled at the girl's uncoordinated explanation, making her realise she had started off at the wrong introduction. "My name is (Y/n) (L/n). My mother was the cleaner here and had to go to the hospital for the time being. I'm here to be her replacement until she comes back."

"Oh I see! I'm really sorry to hear about your mum, I do hope everything works out for you." The male placed his plate down, rendering the girl astounded as she gazed at the empty porcelain that had previously held a mountain of food.

'When the hell did he eat all that, I was literally looking at him...?' The girl chose to revert her thoughts from the miracle she witnessed and chose to politely regard him. "Yes, thank you. I need to find someone called Seok or a Mr Kim." The boy approached her with a pensive posture as he thought over his assistance towards (Y/n).

"Vediamo...Mr Kim should be leaving any time now so it's best if you go ask Seok where he could be...my name is Giovanni by the way, it's a pleasure to meet (Y/n)." The pair shook hands, making the girl feel slightly composed and assured that her working environment would at least hold a few friendly faces she could rely on. "Come, I'll show you where he is."

The two walked out of the boy's quarters and stepped into the long corridor that stretched out several feet before turning into a corner. The girl felt slightly intimidated at the responsibilities she's willing to take on as the long path seemed to keep elongating as though never wanting to end her journey. (Y/n) felt her heart tightening at the pressure she put on herself, feeling as though her feet would sink into the floor and drag her down to a new low. However, as her anxiousness began taking the better of her, the female was pulled into reality by the loud rustling sound of a packet. As she looked beside her, she noticed the boy had opened up a jumbo sized pack of crisps and happily chewed on them as he prepared to take the first step of his job as a guide. "Where did those come from?"

Giovanni glanced at the girl who was quizzically staring at the pack with a completely bemused look. "What do you mean?" He cluelessly inquired her, making the girl sigh and simply pass off her comment, impatient to finally make progress on her journey before the worry could seep in once more. "Alright, come I'll show you where-" The brunet was met with a surprise out of the silence as a loud ringing reverberated from within his room, making him dart back inside in a panic. "My chicken!" The girl could only stand outside the door in pure shock as she watched ashen smoke emerging from beyond the entrance in an obstructive cloud.

'He has an oven in his room...?' She intently listened to the clattering and rummaging as treys and dishes hit together to create a symphony of chaos. The female was slightly startled as wistful weeping came beyond the door. She considered whether to go and comfort the stricken boy had his solemn voice not replied to her from within.

"Ah...porca vacca..." The heavily accented foreign words finally registered in the girl's mind as she realised the possibility of the male belonging to a different ethnicity. Before she could further ponder on the subject, the peach eyed boy called out to her in a depressed tone. "You might need to go on your own...I...I need some time to grieve...just, keep going down the corridor and turn left at the corner. You should find him the fifth door down from there..." (Y/n) nodded to herself as she guiltily forced her feet to begin walking away from the melancholic male, choosing to distance herself to allow him his own space.

Before the girl had a chance to take a few steps towards her designated route, her focus was grabbed by and individual behind her, passing through the interlocking corridor. She recognised the violet eyed boy to be the one that had rescued her from the butler's fury. Deciding if would be polite and impressionable, she chose to seize his attention, seeing he would enter a room she could only assume was his own.

"Hello there! Padraig, was it? I just wanted to thank you for trying to-" (Y/n)'s warm voice completely lost volume as the boy turned towards her with an insulted glare. She searched through her words to gather what cause the negative reaction but found little fault in her tone or speech.

Padraig swiftly turned his head away from her, as though her mere sigh would foul his status. "Do not speak to me unless spoken to! People like you should not be allowed to address those of my ranking with such informalities! Consider yourself lucky I even gave you a glance from my valuable eyes." (Y/n) could only ogle him as she was too befuddled between the choices of feeling undignified, angry, shocked and surprised. The boy proceeded to open his door in a conclusive manner, sending the girl a last message before slamming his door shut. "If you'll excuse yourself, I'm going to give my time to something that deserves it."

(Y/n) was left in silence -the only small inklings of sound coming from the brunet's room, as he mourned over his lost food- sending her confidence plummeting. The girl quickly pulled herself together as she stared onward down the hall with a determined mindset, allowing her objective to be the only thing driving her onward.

"Ugh...ignore that pompous douche, you're here for a reason (Y/n), don't back down now." (Y/n) lightly knocked herself on the head to boost her moral before deeply inhaling to proceed with her decisive stride. The girl slightly grunted as she realised she talked to herself and tightly clutched her worn down bag with a hopeful spirit. "I guess, it can't get any worse from here."
