Chapter 18: Understanding

(Y/n) finally felt the weight of her actions as the dread realisation dawned on her. She was trying to stand up to an incredibly unpredictable and deranged individual with no witnessed in sight, no protection, nor words to her disposal. All she could do was timidly stare as the revelation caught up to her, feeling completely helpless in front of the unfazed male. She knew backing out would be pointless and degrading, and had to figure a course of action as soon as possible.

Gennai watched the girl with a calculative gaze, seeming to plan out moves in his head like a strategic game. Realising that the female was lost for words -and the previous built up gull- he regarded her with the uncanny deep vocals that only she had become witness to. "What's wrong? Are you not enjoying your time here?" The undertone of playful mockery spiked the girl's annoyance as she tried to steady her words against the boy.

"I...! I want to know what you want from me. I want this to stop. What did I ever do to you?" She demanded through breathless exclamations, intently trying to figure the male's motifs.

Gennai watched her with a gaze that, she could feel, was insulting her intelligence. "Leave." He attempted to turn his attention back to the distraction he had been working on prior to the female's intrusion. However, the girl was far from done with the resolve.

"Please just tell me what the hell I ever did. I don't want to work like this and I want us to just leave each other alone!" As she continued pushing on her request, Gennai let out a low and irritated grunt.

"Then leave me alone, and go away." He counteracted her demand as he attempted to ignore her.

"Gennai-!" As she was prepared to protest against his obdurate behaviour the boy spun around to look at her with his unreadable eyes. The female became unnerved. She could not tell what his track of thought followed nor any intended action.

She was then given a glimpse of his intentions as he lifted up his hand to reveal a rubber bear toy in it. She stared at the object with confusion as to his intentions, while Gennai gave it a few light squeezes to make it squeak. As he proceeded to repeat the action a few more times, on his final squeeze he gave the toy an aggressive clench. (Y/n) nearly jumped as a thin object shot out of its mouth, passing her by just a few inches.

She heard a small tap behind her and turned around to see a needle lodged in the wall. 'Where the hell does this guy get his ideas from?!' She screamed in her mind before trying to compose herself when turning back to regard the boy outside her thoughts. "Will you just knock it off?! For the love of God, just tell me. I need to know if I'm supposed to do something! I need to-"

"I hate you!" The male burst out, his malevolent mannerisms finally showing through his calculative behaviour. "It's your fault big brother got hurt! It's because of you that he's..." The boy trailed off as he refused to recall on his sibling's state. (Y/n) took in a deep breath before levelling out her nature.

"I'm sorry but I refuse to take responsibility for something that I didn't do. I did not hurt Eban-"

"Liar!" Gennai threw the toy at the girl, managing to hit her shoulder before the rubber doll bounced away. The girl gulped at the seething attitude he was displaying and could feel her placid state disrupting from the intimidating air that surrounded him. "It's because of you that he's in hospital. It's your fault he got hurt. It's all your fault."

"I didn't even know he was there until the accident happened. I'm sorry, but I did nothing that warrants it being my fault." The girl's genuine display of innocence stirred the boy's temper.

"Then who's fault is it?! Are you saying it's mine?!" His resentment sieved through, insulted over the mere thought of the inclination.

The girl shook her head in opposition. "I know you were the one who purposefully tried to make me fall yesterday...but if I was the one who got hurt, then it would be your fault. But Eban was the victim and that has no one to blame. Neither you nor me intended it to turn out like that, and I'm sure you didn't expect it either." Gennai clenched his teeth at her as his eyes intently glared at the girl. "Not everything needs to have a culprit, sometimes it just happens out of convenience-"

"Shut up! If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't have done that in the first place!" He snapped, completely abandoning his previous controlled composure as his boiling attitude took over. "If you never came here, big brother wouldn't ignore me! If you never came here, I wouldn't have to keep warning you! If you just never came here, that accident wouldn't have been set up in the first place! And big brother wouldn't be hurt..." As he used all his energy to scream out his fury to the female, he began lightly panting to regain his undisturbed breath.

(Y/n) stared as him as he kept his eyes glued to the floor, trying to stabilise his unbalanced temper. "...Gennai-" The girl prepared to reason with him a second time, with a concerned voice, only for her words to get halted as the boy swiftly shot up and ran towards his bed.

(Y/n) gaped as the male quickly scuttled under the frame where she could only hear beguiling murmurs and mumbles to indicate his presence underneath. She waited for a few seconds to final confirm to herself that her opposer had no intention on following her explanation. After a small while, the girl couldn't figure if she was to feel relieved over the fact that she managed to survive through the encounter, or annoyed at the still hanging issue.

'God what's wrong with this guy?!' She internally grumbled to herself. 'I...I can't understand him! He's intimidating but acts like a whiny brat!' She had to stop herself from kicking around any items that scattered the floor as she paced around, driven by her activated temper. 'I can't understand him! But he scares me as well! I don't know what he's thinking! How am I supposed to reason with him!'

'You're the one who said that a lot of tears and conflict could be spared if people understood each other.'

At that moment the girl stopped, seeming frozen in her own gap of time as a voice came into her mind. She was almost struck by the epiphany and looked around the room to confirm her suspicions.

It's lonely. Switching off her mind, she finally took a moment to speculate over the environment as no sound could be heard. Not even the nature outside, nor any other residents in the household. Despite all the items that scattered the ground, the space was empty. Devoid of any vibrant life that could give a comfortable atmosphere. Simply remaining as unneeded junk.

(Y/n) couldn't help but lightly chuckle at her own self-awareness as she wanted nothing more than to scold herself. 'Hah...when did I become so conceited with my own views...?' She looked around, beginning to approach further inside the room. 'Is the reason why I'm scared of him, because I don't understand him or his actions...? Is that why he seems so unpredictable to me?' She stood a few feet away from the bed where the boy had situated under, and contemplated in her mind over the issue. 'Mikah, is this what you were talking about?' She let out a shaky sigh as her nervousness began thinking over what the boy's thoughts could hide.

'It's always hard to accept letting go of something that's been with you throughout.'

The girl thought over their relationship as siblings. She began to pick up on indications that seemed irrelevant at the time. However, she slowly realised the cunning male had virtually no other relationship with any of his housemates beside his brother. 'Even Akai and Lilito have this mutual dislike towards one another. Along with Padraig and Seok. Does Gennai even have that with anyone else, before I came along? Even Giovanni has a good relationship with the staff members.'

She deeply contemplated the statistics as she hung each and every thought on an invisible board, trying to connect through unspoken indications. She looked towards the piles of useless objects and neglected items before she swallowed down her own words. Her own voice echoing through.

'Material items hold no worth'

The objects and valuables lay on the carpet, neglected by the boy who seemed to have inverted under his bed. Each item pulled up on top of stacks of other compiled messes. Simply trying to fill up the empty space.

'when placed beside sentimental value.'

'That's what I had said, right? Is that what Eban is to him?' She approached the bed where she stared atop the duvet, trying to imagine what the male underneath was doing or thinking. 'Is Eban the only valuable thing he actually has?' She placed her palm on top of the sheets as she let out a deep sigh, realising the gaps in her assumptions. 'That's just the first thin layer of understanding.' Concluding her unreliable stance, the girl kneeled down beside the bed, as she lifted the covers from the floor to reveal an entrance to the bottom level. 'If I'm to truly view it from his perspective, I'm going to need to enter his world.' The girl slowly slid herself between the tight squeeze, to get a glimpse of the boy's world.

The girl was slightly surprised at how relatively lit the under side of the bed was, noting the source of light to be a sort of small lamp. As she looked towards the male who seemed too distracted to yet notice her lingering presence, she trailed her eyes towards his focus to stare at the under-frame of the bed.

A cluster of pictures of random assortments were stuck to the underside of the structure, displaying images of flowers, animals, nature, abstract angles and shapes. The girl managed to spot a few familiar photographs that she could recall stories on that were passed down by a kind and calm voice. 'Are these Eban's pictures?' She looked at each individual photo, concluding the style and specificity of each shot leading to the origin of its photographer. 'Gennai actually admires his brother's work...' Looking over to the gazing boy, she could see a whimsical visage that studied each and every beautiful display. "Wow..."

Gennai's eyes widened as he swivelled his head towards the voice to make eye contact with the girl's gaping ones as she realised her presence was uncovered. A momentary scream followed the reveal of her company as the boy hit his head once he tried to bolt up in surprise, only to knock blows with the frame. "OW! What are you doing here?! LEAVE?!" He shouted at her, making the girl scowl at him with determined resilience.

"No! I need to talk to you!" The male immediately began fumbling around in his area before extracting a pair of plastic scissors with a rounded tip, threatening the girl to flee once more. "You're going to try and hurt me with safety scissors?! What are you going to do?! Poke me until I bruise?!" She insultingly lashed out, squeaking as the boy began snipping the item close to her face, making her inch away due to the minimal amount of space. "Will you stop?!" She grabbed the object out of his hand before flinging it away.

Gennai let out a low, aggravated growl before he began to shuffle away, intent on exiting the area. "Where's that rat poison?" He silently muttered, searching around for the weapon of choice. Soon he was brought to hold his attention on the girl as she reached out and squeezed his arm.

"Wait! Let me be an addition!" The dark haired boy soon stopped his struggles as he stared at her with a bemused look. "I mean...I understand now...this worry that I might be taking your brother's attention from you." The boy narrowed his eyes at her as he silently listened to her analysis. The girl could see his focus seemed to grow over her words, giving her hopes in reaching him. "I can see how much he means to you...and I can see that he's something that you can't place a value over. But...I can't do anything if your brother sees me as good company." Gennai clenched his teeth at the girl's final comment, and (Y/n) could see she was about to lose him. "That's why-! That's why I want to ask if I can be an addition to your group."

"Huh?" The boy gave her a weirded stare, as every other emotion was replaced by bewilderment.

"I can't take away something I'm a part of. So don't see me as someone who is trying to take something away from you. But see me as an addition to your companion circle. That way, no matter what, you can be sure that you'll always be included and have twice as much reliance on someone, and that there's no way I'll break you two apart. So..." The girl trailed off as she could no longer find any other form of articulation that would aid in her explanation. However, Gennai stared at her, seeming completely taken by unexpected surprise at her proposal.

After a little while, he darted his eyes around before furrowing his brow and directing his gaze towards the board of the bed. "You're not worthy to hang around me or big brother. You'll just slowly take him away from me like that, I can't allow that to happen." His endurance loosened the girl's hopes and expectations. "Besides, we're not even acquaintances, how am I meant to begin to trust you-" But she was not prepared to lose all her progress.

"My name is (Y/n) (L/n)!" Her outburst nearly startled the boy as he gaped at her with a confused stare. "I have a brother and a sister! I go to Momoca High School and have 2 best friends there! I like to spend a lot of time in my local park and I enjoy sitting by the fountain during summer! I have recently grown to feel disgusted with eggs -especially omelettes- and I have a weird obsession with keychains because they're small and cute and can customise your most simple belongings!" After the end of her unpaused ramble, she took the time to breathe in a few gulps of air to regain her lost oxygen. "There. Now you can no longer use the excuse that we're total strangers. Which means that's as good as a start as any."

Gennai watched her (e/c) eyes shining with a determined spark that radiated in the dim light of the lamp. For the longest time, the girl could feel she was losing his interest once more, and could swear her efforts were being disregarded. "I like keychains too..." (Y/n)'s heart pumped harder for a split second as she heard his silent murmur.

"You do?" She held on to the connection of the topic as she herself was, in a way, surprised at the reveal.

"Yes. They're cheap and convenient to find. They're small so they don't take up much room and can easily be replaced." He casually listed out, making the girl almost burst into tears at the natural conversation they managed to engage in.

"Yeah, and sometimes if you're lucky, you get one of those that act as a mini pen and it just saves your life sometimes." She proceeded with the topic as she could feel the mood lifting.

"Yes, it's like two in one. A great deal!" He strongly agreed. The boy glanced towards the girl's direction to see a satisfied smile on her relieved features. Realising her influence the male turned away to stubbornly glare to the side. "Just because we like something similar, doesn't make us best friends."

"That's ok, because for the first time since we met, we understand each other." The boy twitched slightly before rolling his head to give the female a side look. "I understand your fondness of keychains and you understand mine. All I wanted out of this confrontation is some form of understanding. That's the best start I can think of." She gave him an encouraging smile that only served to baffle the boy further.

"Why do you even want to? After what I've intended to do, you shouldn't even be coming near me." He dubiously told her, making the girl shake her head.

"That's exactly why. I want to understand you because I don't want to be afraid of you." Gennai seemed to sense a linking between her words and his own enigmatic senses. "The whole reason why you scare me so much is because you keep doing these things that I can't comprehend. You're unpredictable and it intimidates me. That's why I want to keep understanding you so I stop feeling like I'm trudging in shadows, waiting for your next move."

Gennai weighed out her her words and reasoning, bringing about a divulgence over his own concerns. The girl noticed the boy staring at her with a relatable and comprehensive look that made her consider another thought over their situation.

'Huh...he seems to have realised something.' She furrowed her brow as she tried to form another connection between their apprehension. 'What? Wait, considering that I'm afraid of him because I have minimal understanding of his behaviours and motifs...' She intently stared at the boy who seemed to have known her dawning conclusion right from the beginning. 'He's pretty much in the same position. Does that mean...' She directed the boy's attention back to her as she pulled on his sleeve. "Gennai, are you afraid of me?"

The boy's seemed startled at her conclusion as he rolled over to where she could not see his exposed face. "Why would I?! You've got no way to threaten me, you're the one at my mercy. Why the hell would I-"

"You're not just worried, you're completely terrified over the thought of me taking your brother away." Silence followed her comprehension, as the girl was left to stare at the male's back while he neither tried to confirm or deny her assumption. (Y/n) simply gave him an audible exhale as she gladly smiled. "Then that's one more thing to add to the list of understandings between us."

Gennai seemed to scrunch up his body as he requested to settle in his own quietness. (Y/n) watched his unmoving form as he seemed to display an adamant attitude that tried to hinder the girl's attempts. However, the girl struck with a small idea of an offering. Reaching around to twist her hand in the restricted space under the bed, she managed to take hold of an item in her pocket.

The male heard the jingling of an object and he turned around to curiously reveal the distraction. He looked towards the female's direction to see a dangling item waving around in front of him. He watched the small, metallic panda hanging from a tiny chain that locked onto a loop.

"It's from the zoo in my town." She indicated towards the spinning animal keychain. "I present this as a detente. You know what that means right?" The boy promptly nodded to display the intelligence behind his knowledge. "It eases hostility and aggression against two parties. If you take this, will you please just go easy on me and stop trying to kill me?" The girl offered the item towards the male with an unnerved smile, in hopes he would take it from her to solidify their peace.

There was a long period of stillness as neither of them spoke, managing to only connect eyes as they stared at the looming keychain. The girl could see the male seemed hesitant over the proposal, and prepared to bitterly take it back only for a hand to snatch it away as an acceptance of her proposition.

She let out a sigh of relief as the boy kept a frown on his face but held onto the item despite his stubbornness. "And there's something important you need to understand before I go." She tugged on the male's shirt to direct his attention towards her. "It's something very serious you need to understand." Her stern tone and unyielding features brought the male's alertness to a higher level as he intently watched for her reveal. "I really...I really dislike eggs!" She exclaimed, turning the male's features into a blanked out stare as he pondered whether he had heard right or not considering the humourless tone she had used.

(Y/n) proceeded to slide out of the bed's frame and back into the real world. The girl advance to walk around the mess, intending to simply exit the room and leave the conversation as it was.

Hearing indicative shuffles behind her, the female turned around to be greeted by a head poking out from underneath the bed. She blinked a few times as the boy seemed to be tracking her movement. 'What is he doing?' She coked and eyebrow at his behaviour before her thoughts began shuffling around in her mind to distract her. 'I managed to make really nice progress today. But he still lacks that connection and trust with me...' Getting ready to depart, the girl then became absent-minded as she noticed numerous pieces of connecting blocks and cube-shaped parts laying on the floor in a pile. 'Oh wow, I haven't seen these since I was 6.'

Crouching down in front of the blocks, a child-like instinct of wonder took over as she began assorting and connecting the shapes together. Her time of unwinding, however, was continuously getting interrupted as small, disapproving groans emitted from the boy that still remained mostly hidden underneath the bed. "That's not how you do it." His brash comment incentivised the girl to ignore him the first time, right before he called out once again. "You're doing it wrong."

"It looks good to me." She spoke back, attempting to balance two pieces of blocks on top of a thin stack.

"The structure is completely off." He fussed, earning a grumble from the female.

"Well, I don't know how else to do it." She griped back. Gennai soon emerged from his shelter to crawl towards the ground and ruin the girl's structure with a swift swing of his arms. (Y/n) almost felt like a bullied child at a playground "H-hey, that's not-"

"Gimme." He took the piece in her hand and placed it down to indicate the starting base. "You can't start with a large piece like you did, you need to work your way up. Here." He handed her a couple of blocks as he began indicating where she would place them. "Put that one here." He directed as the girl reluctantly followed with a sour mood. "And this one here." She placed it towards the intended area while he began working on a separate part of the structure.

'This is like a more dominating version of playtime with Mai...' She mused in her head before placing another block. "And do I put this one here?" She quizzed, earning an approving nod form the boy.

"Yes, and that one there."

As the two shared through the idea of the general components and look of the product, she became aware of a certain aspect in the change of atmosphere. 'Huh...this is interesting.' She handed the male another piece for him to use. 'With his arguing and agreeing and my complaining and cooperation it almost feels like...' Troubled with a term to place for the shift in tone, the girl managed to come to a revelation as she was handed a cube to use by her partner, 'feels like our worlds just collided.' She optimistically thought to herself as she placed down another block.

"Wow! How did we get to this point?!" (Y/n) exclaimed, staring up at the structure that was half her size by the end result. The 3D model of the house seemed to take the girl for a complete ride of confusion as she wondered when all the pieces had fit like they had. 'Is he an architect? This was all his strategic placing...'

Gennai seemed unimpressed with the model but was soon taken out of his detecting thoughtfulness as the girl stood up to stretch her legs.

"Well, I'm off. I need to go do the rest of the cleaning before it's too late."

"But we're not finished." Gennai insisted with a frown, while the girl stared at the flawless structure that they had created.

"That looks good enough for me." She turned around as she began approaching the entrance to exit out of the room. "Besides, I have work I need to finish-" The girl heard a loud crumbling and thudding as though dozens of plastic pieces were sent tumbling to the aground and knocking against each other for the moment she turned her back.

(Y/n) turned around to see the place where their house had been built on as only a pile of unorganised pieces. She looked over at Gennai who simply sat beside it with straight features to accompany his blinking eyes. "...We're not finished."

"Gennai, I'm going!" The female stomped out of the room where she couldn't help but scoff to herself. 'Honestly, he's like a little kid when it comes to-' She turned around once she felt her instincts detecting watchful eyes, only to look towards the male who was peeking through his doorway. 'What is he doing?'

The girl attempted to ignore his mannerisms as she knew he would simply stay in his room. But, remained corrected as the second time she turned around, the boy seemed to be trying to hide himself behind a small table and pot in the corridor. Staring at him, the female continued with her journey, periodically checking over her shoulder to see him nearing her every time.

She stood in front of the door that remained just around the corner, looking over to where Gennai was suspiciously peeking past the edge. "What are you doing?" He questioned the female, seeming to completely lose interest in hiding his conspicuous presence.

"My schedule says I need to clean Akai's room, so..." She indicated towards the boy in question's quarters, as the dark haired male hummed out his thoughtfulness. "...Did you need to tell me something?"

Gennai rolled his eyes up where he seemed to be recalling a certain aspect in his memory. "Don't go to the library unless you want your face shot off."

(Y/n) gaped at him with a wordless response as all the actual reaction took place in her mind. 'When did he have time to set these things up?! Does he just have these planned before hand-?!'

"And also..." The girl was dragged back to reality as the male seemed to fumble around for his words as he appeared uncertain whether his thoughts were worth mention or not. "I understand you...your dislike towards eggs, I hate mine scrambled." He bolted away as his words left his mouth, deserting the girl to process his comment before she gave a light laugh.

'As much as I'll try to understand him, his character is just too much to read into.' She light-heartedly remarked before placing her focus on the door in front that would guide her to her next duty. 'Well, on to the next task.'
