Chapter Six

Previously...

"Tomorrow Mr. Zuber is going to see a new Kyrah," she thought gleefully.

"I have to run. But, where do I go? I'm not sure where my wobbly feet are taking me. I can't let it kill me."

Exhaustion and fear were made my body go numb. Every ounce of my energy dwindled with each movement. I couldn't run anymore.

Catching my breath I looked behind, seeing nothing except darkness. Wiping the sweat from my brow, I sat down, unable to go further.

"Baby?"

"Where are you, my princess?"

"Mother! Father! You are here!"
I yelled, running with a new found energy. Happiness flowed through me, my heart thumping with my swift movements.

Finally, I saw them, their smiles seemed to illuminate the dark atmosphere. Rushing to hug them, I stumbled upon something. My legs gave way and I fell to the ground with a thud, scratching my arm.

I couldn't get up. I felt someone tightening their hold on my body. Fear crept in my heart, I realized what had happened.

"No! Not again please," I begged, sobbing vehemently.

"Kyrah, we meet again," a silky and smooth female voice hissed. Power radiated off her. Her hold was an iron grip, but soothing at the same time. Her eyes were visible now, bright green orbs shining dangerously, boring into my blue ones.

Unaware of my fate, I trembled and struggled to get free. Fear completely overtook me, my cries piercing the dull, silent night.

"Leave me! What do you want? Let me go!" I shrieked, panic evident in my voice.

"Mother, father why don't you help me?" I screamed, looking at them.

Their smiles were constant, without flinching. I couldn't discern their behavior. My cries remained unheard as their image was evanescent. They had vanished, without a word, without any warning.

"No, no, no, don't go!"

Tears poured down my face, blurring my vision. My eyes stung and heaviness gripped my head.

My breathing grew erratic, darkness surrounding my eyes. The snake hissed something in my ears, but I couldn't grab what she said.

The tears dried, leaving my face tightened. I couldn't handle it anymore, all my efforts to escape seemed worthless. I felt dizzy and without any notice, I slipped into oblivion.

A scream cut through, breaking the silence of the night. Zuber woke up, getting startled.

"I must be dreaming," he said, blinking his sleepy eyes. He was going back to sleep, but he heard Kyrah sobbing. Rushing out of bed, he unbolted his door quickly and reached the living room.

"Mother, father, come back, don't leave me, please! No!" Kyrah sobbed, her hand outstretched, calling her parents.

"Kyrah, relax... it's must be a dream... I-I am here for you. Please don't cry," Zuber consoled her, his face woebegone.

"My parents, they-they were just smiling! Why am I seeing such things? Oh God, I miss them so much!" she wailed, burying her head in her hands.

"I wish I could see them," her voice choked.

Zuber felt helpless seeing her in this state. A huge burden weighed on his shoulders. He filled her a glass of water, holding it out to her.

"I am sorry, I can't let you go. But, I promise everything will be alright, you have to trust me..."

Looking up with teary eyes, she reached out for the glass. Their fingertips touched, eyes locked, but Kyrah took the glass from him quickly.

She stared in front of her, tears rolling down her cheeks. Zuber sat on her bed, near her.

"Look, Kyrah, I hate seeing girls cry. Please don't cry," he said, choosing his words carefully. He had never dealt with a person like her before. It was very difficult for him to calm her down. He couldn't watch her cry.

"I miss them," her voice was barely audible.

"I promise you will see them soon," he said, earning a watery smile from her.

"Now quickly wipe those tears and go back to sleep. No more crying. Good night, Kyrah," he murmured.

"I am hungry."

"Now?"

"Yes, now."

"Alright."

He switched on the lights and lead her to the kitchen. He searched the cabinets for some food.

"Great, no leftovers. So, who will cook now?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.

"I am going to sleep," he yawned, stretching his arms. Kyrah watched him amusedly.

"Drama mama."

"What was that?" he asked, cupping his ear. "I didn't quite hear you."

"Nothing. I will cook, you can go and sleep," she suggested, batting her eyelashes, in a dulcet voice.

"I am not going anywhere," he said suspiciously. "If anything happens to my kitchen, you will be cooked."

Standing near her, he watched her attentively. She took an onion and began cutting it.

Zuber placed a hand over his mouth to stifle his laugh.

"I can see you," she said, and narrowed her eyes. She resumed cutting once more. Unable to keep the onion steady, she attacked it furiously, sending the onion flying away from the impact.

Bending down to pick the poor onion, he pursed his lips into a thin line. It was difficult to control his laugh now.

"What sin has this poor onion committed?" he sniffled, holding out the onion.

She snatched it away, rolling her eyes.
Brooding over what to do next, her eyes fell upon an egg.

Placing the egg in front of her, she decided to break it. Keeping the knife at a distance, she aimed to break it. Before she could do this, his hand stopped her. She glanced at him with a startled look.

"Are you done playing, baby?" he asked, taking the knife from her.

"Give it back," she whined. "I am not done yet," she huffed.

"You didn't even begin," he snickered.

Snatching the knife from him, she aimed once more.

"Wait let me expl--"

The knife hit the egg with such an impact, that Kyrah's whole face was covered with yolk.

"Uh-Oh!"

"Oh God! This is priceless!" he said, unable to speak as he was laughing so hard. He sobered down watching Kyrah glued to her spot, with her hands on her face standing there cluelessly. Zuber doubled over, clutching his stomach as he fell to the ground. Tears rolling down his face.

"Oh! That was..."

"Oww! Now, this hurts," he said, placing both hands on his cheeks. He caught his breath and looked at Kyrah once more.

"Will you stay like this for the whole night? Go on, wash your face."

"I can't see."

"Aww! Poor baby. Tsk, Tsk, Tsk. Here let me help."

Opening the tap, he bent her head, and splashed water on her face, till it was clean. Handing her a towel, he crossed his arms, staring at her.

After wiping her face, she looked at Zuber with puppy eyes.

"What?"

"I am hungry," she said patting her tummy. "Teach me."

"Say please."

"Please," she said, sticking out her tongue at him.

"Not like this."

"Please teach me. I have no idea about cooking," she whined with puppy eyes.

"Bingo!"

Zuber took out an egg and hit it lightly against a bowl. The egg broke open easily. Next, he showed Kyrah how to cut onions.

"Remember to keep the knife steady and place your left finger on the onion, keeping them close together, in sync, to chop finely. If you keep them far apart, your efforts will go in the bin."

"Yes, that's right! No-No, wait the pieces are too big, cut them short."

He added salt, pepper, and some chili flakes to the mixture, and asked Kyrah to whisk it.

Switching on the gas, he poured some oil and asked her to empty the mixture in the frying pan. The egg turned into an omelette in no time.

"Now, turn and fold it."

She did as told, looking at the result with satisfaction.

"Fork, please?"

"There isn't any."

"So, how am I supposed to eat this now?"

"Simple, with your hand."

"I know you are just trying to irritate me. Give me a fork, I am starving."

"Like I said, there isn't any."

"Fine."

She made a roll out of the omelette and gobbled it up hungrily.

"Hey, you could have at least left a morsel for me."

"Sorry!" she said smiling sweetly. "All over."

Kyrah settled down comfortably on the sofa, sighing contentedly.

"Thank you, for the lovely omelette," she said with a yawn.

"You should go back to bed. You are sleepy."

"No, I am not. Let me sit peacefully."

Another yawn.

Zuber plopped on the sofa, next to her.

"Why are you so stubborn? If you are sleepy, go to your bed."

"I am not sleepy. See, I'm wide awake," she said, pointing to her wide eyes. Her eyes started to get heavy causing her eyelids to droop themselves. She fell asleep the next minute.

Sighing, Zuber waited a minute or so. When he was sure that she was fast asleep, he carried her in his arms.

"Aren't we stubborn?" he whispered.

Reaching her bed, he sat down, trying to tuck her in. But he couldn't. A pair of arms wrapped him by the stomach, a nose pressed to his chest. He looked down and saw Kyrah snuggled up to him. Warmth filled his heart, he looked at her, and smiled.

"Good night, father," came her sweet voice.

Zuber felt a pang of sorrow listening to her words. "I promise you will be there with them, soon."

With that, he pulled the blanket over her, looking at her for the last time. Walking away, he stopped and hesitated. Rushing back to her, he pressed a kiss to her forehead, and returned to his room the next minute.
