"The Serpent's Teeth"
(A Tom Riddle love story)

1st March1945
Sunday

Once again I sit with Tom in his room in my favourite chair.
I spent a wonderful weekend with him, that we can just fade away.
But before I go back to the Gryffindor common room, I want to ask him a question.
It has been burning in my head ever since I got to know the young Riddle.
His fear of death.
His desire for immortality.
Why?
Why he doesn't he want to die?
Why doesn't he accept his mortality?

"When are you leaving?"

Slowly I turn my head to him.
"Soon."
He nods.
"Can I ask you something, Tom?"
"You constantly ask me things. What is it this time?"

Heck, when his voice is so emotionless, I never know how he'll react.
But he allowed me to ask him a question, might as well go for it.

"Why are you afraid of death?"
"How do you know that?" Alarmed, he looks at me.

Right.
How do I know this?
He never mentioned it.

"Your mother, Tom. You said that she was too weak to live."
"You've got your answer. It is a weakness," he hisses.
"That's the only reason?"
"What else do you want to hear?" He angrily glares at me.
"It is a weakness of the human body. Everybody dies. I'm everybody!"
"Of course not, Tom," I try to calm him down.
"Why do you even ask?"
"It just interested me, Tom," I answer calmly.
"I think you want to go now," he says coolly.

His face is calm again, his eyes emotionless.
But I know that my question has unnerved him.
He's angry.
Very angry.

"Of course, Tom. I'll see you tomorrow in class ", I get up, grab my coat and start walking to the door. "Good night, Tom."

He doesn't respond.
When he orders something it's always better to listen to him.
Contradiction is futile.
Tom Riddle gets what he wants.
By all means.
He could have thrown me out easily.
Or hexed me if he needed to.
That's what think at least.
I've never dared to disobey a command from him.
