"The Serpent's Teeth"
(A Tom Riddle love story)

12th October 1944
Saturday

I've been sitting in the library for almost three hours trying to finish up the homework that I didn't manage to do yesterday after class.

In a few minutes Riddle will be here and work with me on Arithmancy yet again.

''You had to sit down at this window, right? ''

Startled, I lift my gaze.

He is as always dressed in black, preppy, like my mother would have called his style.

"How did you guess?" I ask him.

"You always sit at this window."

"That's true," I reply smiling and pull a few strands of hair behind my ear.

"Can we start?"

"Once you have your papers on the table."

"Just one second," I hasten to say, and bend down to take them out of my schoolbag.

Its the first time that I'm wearing casual wear since I'm here.

I just couldn't escape the charm of the fifties dresses.

My dark blue dress is littered with white dots and the ribbon in my hair fits it perfectly.

The outfit is just adorably cute.

Not as showy and cheap like most of the girls are dressed in my time.

"We'll start where we left off last time, and then we'll deal with the homework. Without my help you'll fail again. "

"I'm sorry but I didn't quite get that last part," I snort nonchalantly, looking for my tuition notes from the Arithmancy folder.

"Repeat what I said about the Silvermen table."

"The table is based on numerology. If you assign the numbers living data, you can find things out about a person. "

"And?"

"And what?"

"What is Numerology?"

"Numerology is the mystical theory of the significance of certain numbers. But it differs from country to country. The ancient Greeks, for example, interpret some numbers differently than the Romans or Celts. That has to do with the constellations being in different positions. "

"The principle applies to the whole Subject of Arithmancy and that is where we are now. You've probably heard of Agrippa, haven't you? "

His bored voice, touches my ear like an icy breeze.

When I notice the Goosebumps on my arms, I regret wearing a sleeveless dress.

The school uniform would be more practical now.

"Agrippa was a wizard."

Riddle rolls his eyes in an arrogant fashion as he crosses his arms over his muscular chest.

"Well," I sigh.

"Cornelius Agrippa was a wizard from the late Middle Ages. The Muggles have persecuted him for alchemy, criticism against the church and opposing of the witch trials. Because of that, he has traveled through Europe. His book De Occulta Philosophia, was published in 1533. He died shortly after. " I chant down the facts known to me.

Thank Merlin, for the chocolate frog cards.

I can't stand History of Magic.

I wonder if Professor Binns is already is a ghost in this time...

"And it is precisely that book that we are examining today. Go and get it! "

"Excuse me?"

"I won't rephrase the command. Go and get it! "

I leisurely make my way to the correct department. I know only too well that he will recognize this delay .

The future Lord Voldemort doesn't like to be kept waiting.

"I'm back," I say in a good mood with the dusty book in hand.

He looks at me without saying a word.

"What?" I ask looking at him innocently.

"Don't push your games too far Hayes. Otherwise, you can go find another tutor. How about Mulciber? He would certainly be happy to spend more time with you. He's always liked petite girls and if they have outstanding features ", he grabs a strand of my hair.

"Then he'll just ad them to his collection." His smile can be best described as cold and calculating.

"We both know that I would never take tuition from him, "I hiss at him as dangerous as I can manage.

Unconsciously I lean against the table and Riddle starts do the same.

"I don't like rebellious little girls," he breaths almost toneless, which makes him appear even more threatening.

"Thank Merlin I'm not little", I answer and turn to the book.

"Let's start from scratch?"

"Yes," he replies as emotionless as if the discussion didn't take place and his threat was just a fiction of my imagination.

"I can't take it anymore", I groan in frustration and tousle my hair.

"We have already skipped lunch. Can we please take a short break? My head feels overloaded! "

"Not your head, you feel overloaded"; he corrects me and leans back in his chair.

"But you're welcome to take a break," he tells me with an arrogant smile.

"Good, then let's go to the kitchen!" I suggest and sort out the documents on the table.

"Let's?"

"Yes, you and me. Even a snake needs something to eat every now and then, " I say to him as if I'm talking to a small child.

Quick as a flash he draws his wand and presses against my throat.

"Don't ever talk to me in that way again! Do you understand me?" He hisses threateningly.

"That was just a joke", I squeeze out gasping.

The wand pressed against my throat is making it hard for me to breath.

It hurts.

Tears are slowly welling up in into my eyes and I try to frantically blink them away.

I'm not going to let him see how much he's hurting me.

"A bad joke," he mocks and takes his wand from my throat.

"Not that the little girl starts crying."

His malicious grin will haunt me in my sleep.

"Let's go eat ," I repeat my suggestion and suppress a shiver.

Now that I realize how bossy he already was as Teenager, it no longer surprises me in the least, why everybody does what he says and nobody dare to contradict him.

He sets his will through no matter the consequences.

Once in the kitchen I recovered from the shock, and the pain when swallowing is also down to a minimum.

The house elves scurry busily around us bringing tea, scones and jam sandwiches.

"Any more wishes, Miss, Mister?" A small house elf whimpers helpfully.

"I'm fine, thank you," I smile at him and pour the tea into the two cups.

"I don't need anything either," Riddle rejects without even looking at the house-elf.

The little guy quickly bows at us and goes back to his real work.

Riddle and I sit in a corner of the kitchen, away from all the hustle and bustle, so you get the feeling that you're sitting behind a glass wall and watch the elves from a distance.

"You could be a little more polite," I smile and take a sip from my tea.

"They're house-elves."

"Living creatures exactly, you could at least have looked at him. "

Astonished, he looks at me.

"That was a he?"

"I think so," I smile and the.

He doesn't react to this, but takes half of the bun and bites into it.

"By the way, are you a pure-blood?"

He asks into the resulting silence between us.

"You know that I'm a Gryffindor and don't put much value on blood purity, right?"

He looks at me as if waiting for a different answer.

"Yes, I am," I sigh and grab a scone.

"I love these things!"

"You're not supposed to talk with your mouth full," he chides.

"They are so beautifully sweet," I sigh and take the next bite.

He goes back to not saying anything and we finish our meal in silence.

Even the way back to the library is done in silence.

He only breaks the silence once we get back to our table and speaks extensively about the work of Agrippa and its impact on our understanding of Arithmancy today.

"You're tutoring went on for quite a while," Tracey greets me at the Gryffindor table for dinner.

"I know", I moan and plop onto my place.

"When are you meeting up again?"

"Wednesday during the two free hours," I sigh and pull a face.

I would have preferred if we could have meet up before class.

"Does it help you, at least?"

"Sure, Tracey, sure," I moan exhausted and take a brownie from the plate in front of me.

"Then don't act like that! If your N.E.W.Ts are important to you, then you have to set yourself some priorities, "she says.

"I know," I agree with her powerless to explain my problem in more detail.
