➽Chapter Twenty Four

The water stung her eyes, piercing through her skin as her lungs began to enclose.

A hand gripped her hair tightly, yanking her head out of the water before she fell into unconsciousness. Alesandria took a deep breath, tears falling down her face as she fought to undo her wrists.

"Are you going to do what we ask of you?" Irene's deceiving voice called out to her, her fingers stroking her black locks. Alesandria began to shake, the ropes around her wrists cutting through her flesh.

"I can't!" she begged, praying she wouldn't get slapped once again.

Irene's invidious eyes sized her up, frowning before kicking the bucket of water aside. "Your powers of compulsion are as weak as you are, Rheynoak." She turned over to the tribe leader who was across the room, deep in thought. "And your criticism is unnecessary" he scowled, looking up.

"Well she's not breaking and without her, we can't go through with the plan." Irene turned around to face him, arms crossed over her chest as the tribe leader contemplated on his next words. When he did not answer her, a groan escaped from her lips, directing her anger back to Alesandria.

"Sweet child, there are many other roads I could go along" she reminded her, long nails stroking the delicate Siphon's face. "For example, I can sit here and pluck every single one of your nails from your skin" she cooed, dancing her touch against Alesandria's hand.

The poor Siphon struggled, hurried breaths leaving her lips as the tribe leader continued to taunt her. "Or I could peel your skin off and toss you into a burning fire. Better yet, I could shoot an arrow straight through that royally proclaimed heart of yours" she continued.

Alesandria shook her head, struggling to form words. "P-Please don't. I beg of you" she pleaded, shaking her head even as Irene sunk her sharp nails into her thigh. A pained whimper escaped her lips, blood oozing from the wound inside her mouth.

"Or I can simply render you powerless" she threatened, using her other hand to grasp her hair. Against her wishes, Irene forced herself inside Alesandria's mind, searching through unwanted memories. The Siphon screamed in pain, begging the tribe leader to stop her reign of terror but her pleas fell on deaf ears.

"Oh, what is this?" Irene's lips curled in a conniving smirk as she paused on a specific memory, replaying it in her mind. "Oh, you poor Siphon. Tortured at the hands of the man you once loved. What was his name? Jaris was it?"

At the mention of her dead lover, Alesandria screamed. Her pleas became wrenched sobs, her body thrashing as Irene repeated the name in her ears. "How would you like it if I could replay that moment for you?" she hissed, curling her hands around the Siphon's throat. "Wouldn't you like to feel his hands around your throat once again? Your body succumb to his? Your consent stripped from you?"

"Stop it! Rheynoak, please! Help!" At the mention of his name, Rheynoak snapped his attention back to reality just in time to see Irene silence Alesandria by choking her pleas back down her throat. With lightning reflexes, he winnowed himself in front of Irene, prying her off of Alesandria.

"Have you lost your damn mind?!" he questioned, pushing her against a wall. Irene's face was lit with red, her finger stained with the Siphon's blood. "No but it seems like you have lost yours" she replied back, stabbing a finger in his chest.

"Torturing her won't get us anywhere!" he scowled at her, slapping her finger away. "Don't you dare lay another finger on her" he threatened, closing the space between them. His lips were twisted into an everlasting scowl, his cheeks red with anger.

"Or else what, sweet Rheynoak?" Irene teased, placing her hands on the lapels of his long trench coat. She leaned in to press her lips against his ear, whispering words of death. "We both know you could never get mad at me. Much less stop me from doing what I want to do. Remember, you have a debt to pay."

Her eyes shined mischievously as she pulled back to take in his devastated face. Though his jaw was set in a demanding demeanor, they both knew it was nothing but a tough exterior anyone could break through.

Before Rheynoak could retort back an insult, the door to his office opened and Heather Falyik walked in, a sword strapped to her black dress. She took one look at the scene in front of her and immediately shook her head, crossing her arms over her chest.

"Do I even want to know what's going on?" she questioned, raising her brows.

"Rheynoak is being insufferable again. Even his powers of hell can't fully control Alesandria" Irene filled her in, pushing the tribe leader away from her. She gestured over to the Siphon who was weeping in the chair she sat, her wrists now stained with blood. "I tried a little bit of therapy to render her helpless but nothing has worked so far."

"How come?" Heather simply questioned.

"Because of her humanity" Rheynoak chimed in, capturing her attention. He passed a dirty look towards Irene, straightening the lapels of his jacket before approaching Alesandria. The Siphon looked at him with hopeful eyes, smiling through her teary face. "No matter how many times I try to manipulate her, I can't. She still has a pure heart. She can still feel remorse, fear, even anger for mortals of all kind. It's her most powerful asset."

They all casted a look towards Alesandria, eyebrows raised. "What if I could strip her humanity away from her? Make her completely useless?" Heather suggested, turning over to her fellow immortal. "Make her a slave in her own mind?"

"And how would you be able to do that?" Irene asked, almost repulsed with the suggestion. Heather gave her a sly look, simply directing her gaze back to Alesandria. "That is a secret only I can know. For now, you and Rheynoak can dismiss yourselves and plot something. I have some work to do."

"It's my office" the tribe leader protested.

"And soon, it will be your bloody body wrapped up in this carpet if you don't get the hell out." Though her voice was calming, the threat behind her words was anything but a bluff. With a huff, Rheynoak passed one final look towards Alesandria before nodding.

With Irene following hot on his heel, the two exited the office, the door slamming shut.

Now it was just Alesandria and Heather.

"You don't look so good" Heather whispered, crouching in front of Alesandria. She moved the bucket of water aside. The Siphon watched her with careful eyes as her hands brushed her arms, reaching up to sweep a single hair behind her ear.

"Heather. Please. I don't want to do this" she begged, tears falling down her cheeks. "I don't want to hurt anyone."

"And you won't have to my dear" she reassured her, untying the ropes that bounded her wrists. Alesandria breathed a sigh of relief as the heavy ropes fell to the ground, her wrists finally free to move. "Thank you" she uttered.

Heather only nodded.

"Heather, I have nothing against you or Rheynoak's tribe. I chose to stay here for a reason. I wanted to be trained by the best leaders" the Siphon said, her words tumbling over one another. "However, my stay won't last long if you three keep using me as your personal pawn."

The Siphon's lips quivered, a sight Heather scowled at. She didn't like that.

"I'm begging you, don't do this. There has to be another way."

"Oh there are many ways to go about with this" the tribe leader reassured her, planting her hands on her thighs. "Ways that are less violent but just as sadistic." Her hands traveled up higher, revealing miles of skin.

Alesandria squirmed in her seat, holding her breath as the tribe leader's touch dance around her waist, brushing past her arm. "There are so many options for me to choose and yet, this one is my favorite one."

Her hand trailed the Siphon's neck, eyeing her skin with an insatiable hunger. "Do you know why?"

Confused but not afraid as she was before, Alesandria shook her head. "Why?"

"Because you're involved" she replied back, rushing back the Siphon's dark locks. "You are as riveting as you are cowardly. You hold so much potential yet you waste your time in unwanted places. You are the other half to unlocking a whole new battleground yet you choose to stay at your base."

Heather flickered her gaze to Alesandria's eyes, leaning in until she could hear the soft thump of her heartbeat. "Why is that?"

Alesandria struggled with an answer, her legs squirming under the tribe leader's weight. Heather could feel the Siphon's defense growing weaker, her walls slowly but surely crashing down. The bold energy she once exhibited now turned into nothing but lost aura.

Her green-grey eyes trailed the leader's face to find any hint of deceitfulness in her gaze but found nothing but pure intentions.

"I-I don't know" she replied back after a silent moment.

Heather smiled, knowing her compulsion was working. Alesandria had managed to drop her internal walls, allowing the tribe leader to momentarily seize her soul and control her every move. She cocked her head to the left, prompting Alesandria to jump a little.

Not out of fear but of uncertainty.

"You know" the tribe leader continued, grooming the Siphon's dark locks. "I have always thought you were the prettier sister. Ever since the moment I saw you. Sure, Onyx is beautiful but you are something else, Alesandria."

Heather's hands cupped the delicate face in front of her, using her powers of compulsion to draw the Siphon closer. She tugged on a bond line forming between them, prompting Alesandria to lean in closer, her eyes filled with nothing but curiosity.

"You are enticing."

The last of Alesandria's defense crumbled in front of the tribe leader's eyes. She could almost hear the rumbling sound of her walls crashing down. An oblivious smile fell on the Siphon's lips, her hands grasping on to the tribe leader's arms.

"Just do one favor for me dear" she beckoned, brushing her hand against her pale cheeks. Alesandria raised her brows. "What is it?"

Heather pulled her closer, clutching her black hair in a tight grip. "Don't fight it."

With that final command, the tribe leader wasted no time using her powers to strip away the poor girl's humanity. She hooked herself into Alesandria's mind, recklessly destroying and burying all her memories under a layer of lies and emptiness.

Alesandria screamed, her mind on fire as she fought off the power that was taking over her mind. She scratched and dug her fingers into her scalp, drawing blood from her hair as she cursed underneath her breath.

Heather pulled her hair back, constricting the poor's siphon throat with her powerful grasp until she could no longer scream. Alesandria gasped at the sensation but slowly found herself bending to the tribe leader's control.

Any type of sanity she had was now gone.

Her warm memories.

Her empathy.

Her Spirit.

Her humanity.

All of it was gone. Her mind was trying to swim but only ended up drowning under the powerful sea that was Heather's powers. With a final fight, Alesandria's spine cracked and her body stopped convulsing. She collapsed into the chair, helpless and useless.

Heather tore her hands from Alesandria's throat and slammed her head against the back of the chair. The tribe leader crouched down to the ground and waited for anything. A sign, a breath, the blink of an eye. Anything to tell her that her duty was done.

Silent minutes passed by, nothing but the wind howling outside to signify time.

The tribe leader was growing tired and rather bored, giving herself a few more minutes before leaving.

Before she could even finish her thought, Alesandria opened her eyes and gasped. Her whole body cracked as she came back to life. Heather stumbled back in surprise but moved closer to see what she had created.

"Alesandria dear" she cooed, reaching out for her hand. What she got was an icy grip and eyes as red as hell. The Alesandria she had known was gone, replaced with a soulless monster who would bend her back to hell to complete any mission sought after.

"Master" Alesandria called back, raising her head. Color flushed to her complexion, a naughty smile on her face. "What is your command?"

With a smile on her face, Heather rose to her feet. "We have a plan to gain control and you are our fuel. I need you to connect with that bond you have with Onyx and scream as loud as you can. Scream so loud that she will think you are in danger."

The tribe leader passed a look out to the window where the sun was setting, the sky a blood orange. "Then when she comes to rescue you like the self-proclaimed saint she is, you will be my guiding eyes and together with those two fools, we will tear down the Inner Circle."

Heather glanced back at her puppet. "Understood?"

Alesandria only nodded back. "Crystal clear."

The Krayos palace was as gorgeous on the inside as it was on the outside.

The tall gold peaks of the palace towers could not compete with the glass interior of the grand ballroom. The glittering garden flowers of the courtyard sparkled like the ruby encrusted stairs that encircled the room.

Even the grand tier chandelier dangling from the ceiling was almost as perfect as the diamond fence that engulfed the entire palace.

But no amount of jewels or gold could compare to the beauty that was Cayah Kronebeck, Empress of Krayos. She was the definition of elegance and fear combined. Her winter white dreadlocks were a stark comparison against her dark complexion. Her eyes were the fairest shade of honey brow, her stature tall and slim. Tonight she adorned herself in pearls and a winter blue gown and greeted her guests as she assembled everyone for the meeting. A glass of wine sat in her hand.

Onyx held on to Draco's arm as he guided her through the pristine crowds of emperors and empresses. All of them were dressed to the stars, hugging and kissing one another as they took their place at the counseling table. "This is all so overwhelming" Onyx breathed, taking a deep breath. "Maybe I shouldn't have tagged along."

"Nonsense!" Falcon reassured her, patting her shoulder. "If anything, you deserve to be here more than anyone else. You are a game changer." He passed her a heartwarming smile and she returned it, nodding her head. "I guess you're right."

At the completion of her sentence, Empress Cayah approached them, a bright smile on her face. "My favorite people of all! Draco dear!"

Draco passed the hybrid a smile before breaking their arms apart. He greeted Cayah with open arms, a warm smile on his face. "It's been so long" he pointed out as they broke apart. She nodded her head, taking a sip of her wine. "Too long. How are you?"

"Well, I'm still alive so life's great" he replied back nonchalantly. The empress beamed brightly, rolling her eyes. "Draco, never short of dark humor." She embraced him once again before turning over to his court.

"Azura, Yongui! So nice to see you again!" She embraced them in tight hugs, moving on to the boys. "And I can't forget about the three musketeers!" she teased, referring to Castrin, Falcon, and Orion. "It's so nice to finally see your faces again! This kingdom has been lacking so excitement."

"With you as their ruler, I highly doubt there's a lack of excitement" Orion complemented. He queen tossed her dreadlocks, shrugging her shoulders. "If you say so handsome" she replied back, taking a sip of her wine. She turned back to embrace Onyx but stopped short at the unfamiliar face.

"I don't think I've ever seen you around here" she questioned, raising her brow. The bubbly tone she had used to greet the others fell flat, her bright expression changing into a sinister one. Onyx gulped under her icy stare, feeling her breath leave her lungs.

"Are you an intruder?" she questioned, her eyes glinting with suspicion. "Because if you are, I'm giving you a three-second head start before I rip you apart." The threat shot fear up her veins and Onyx began to back up, her throat closing.

Immediately, Draco took a hold of her hand, intertwining their fingers together. "As a matter of fact, she's here with me" he confirmed, giving her hand a light squeeze. "She's my special guest."

Cayah's eyes lit up, a smile curling on her face. "Have you finally found your mate?" she exclaimed in excitement. The two immortals passed an uneasy look towards each other, sharing a nervous laugh. "No, but it's something almost as exciting."

The empress shoulders dropped in disappointment but nevertheless, she still smiled at Onyx. "Well, it's nice to meet you, dear. I hope we become fairly acquainted." She grasped Onyx's hand with a solid grip, power radiating off of her.

"Now quickly. You better find a seat before it's all taken."

Bowing at the empress, they all made their way to the conference tables, settling into the remaining seats. Onyx took her place between Azura and an unfamiliar man. He was tall with a tan complexion and strong, handsome features. Thick, dark hair, a strong jawline, and unsettling deep eyes. His wings were tucked away behind his trenchcoat, his fingers decorated in rings. A ruge crawled up his arm, proclaiming that he was taken.

The man turned over to her side, his stunning indigo eyes greeting her. "Azura, it's so nice to see you once again," he said, a hint of a smile nudging on her lips. Azura returned his friendly recognition, nodding her head. "The same to you Emperor Seron."

"Where is Sahara tonight?" he asked, a bit of longing in his voice.

"She couldn't make it your highness. Perhaps the next meeting." Though a wave of disappointment washed over his face, he simply nodded, smiled at Onyx, and turned away. Azura leaned in close, whispering in the hybrid's ear. "That's Sahara's mate. He's the emperor of Cyreix. He just returned from a voyage." Onyx gulped, glancing at him one last time. Even though he didn't return the look, she could make out his tiny smirk.

"Welcome all to the monthly meeting" Cayah greeted, settling into her seat at the end of the table. She crossed her legs and wore a regal smile on her face. "Let's begin our discussion."

And just like that, her smile fell, replaced with a stoic expression. "Okay, there isn't much to discuss in this meeting. I'm going to briefly go over general issues before all of you attack me with your personal kingdom issues."

Cayah looked up once, scanning the people in front of her. "Understood?"

Everyone nodded in unison.

"Okay. During the last meeting, issues with border patrol around the barrier were brought into the light. Any progress on that so far?"

A short woman with kinky ginger locks and a tall man with shoulder length hair stood up. "Security around border control has been reinforced so more warriors have been dispersed to the eight sections of the barrier. The barrier has also be strengthened and it has been moved to have weekly checkups instead of monthly checkups."

"And everyone has sent out at least a dozen of their best warriors to defend the barrier?"

The man nodded.

"Any attempts so far?" Cayah asked. "Besides a failed attempt by a mortal, nothing has threatened the safety of the barrier or the inner circle." A smile fell on the empress's face. "Good. Thank you Argin and Sienna. You may be seated."

The two took a seat and the meeting proceeded rather quickly. "Okay, it seems as if we don't have many complaints this time" the empress informed, flipping through the file. "I see that our dear friend Emperor Seron has finally returned from his voyage."

She glanced briefly in his direction, nodding her head. "Welcome."

The emperor smiled, nodding his head. "Glad to be here."

"Any exciting adventures to share with us?" she asked. The emperor contemplated his words for a minute, his brows pulled together in deep thought. "Considering my ship almost sank as I charted around mortal kingdoms, it's safe to say my trip was anything but bland."

Small laughter went around the table. "Good to know" she replied between laughter. "Okay, there are minuscule complaints in this file. Frankly, I don't feel like nitpicking one to share, so we are going to go around the table and just say what we have to say. Make sure to include any solutions you have come up with."

"Emperor Mavian and Empress Imperia of Aragon" Cayah addressed, gesturing towards a couple seated at the center of the table. "You're up."

For the next twenty minutes, emperors and empresses of any kingdom explained their issues and offered solutions though many of them were still in the developing stages. Onyx sat in silence and nibbled at her lips. A pit formed in her stomach and her heart pounded against her ribcage.

At some point, she passed a look over to Draco who seemed submerged in the meeting like everyone else in the room. However, when their eyes clashed, he gave her a reassuring smile, nodding his head towards her direction.

That small gesture calmed her beating heart.

An hour into the meeting, Cayah gestured towards Draco. "Draco, you will close us off. You previously stated that you had a very important announcement." Her eyes flickered up to meet his gaze, an intrigued smile on her face. "Enlighten us."

"Will do." He stood up from his chair, straightening the lapels of his trenchcoat. His brows wove together, a flicker of worry buried deep in his eyes but it was gone before Onyx could comprehend it.

"As you all know, I recently made a trip to Rheynoak's tribe after we had struck a deal to protect Alesandria Erovex. One of the few siphons left in Asxairo." A string of whispers passed around the room, stirring disapproving glances but the emperor continued talking, trying to seem unfazed.

"However, my recent trip has led me to discover that Alesandria is not the heir to the Crojesian throne. She is the descendant of Aries and Caria but does not possess the official claim to the throne." An unsettling silence settled in the room, rulers passing each other uneasy glances.

Caya studied Draco with hooded eyes. Her arms were crossed over her chest and a frustrated expression settled into her pretty face. "Then who is?" she questioned him with an accusing tone. "Because as far as I know, Lezandria shouldn't even be alive in the first place."

"Then allow me to introduce you to the next heir."

His eyes traveled and fell upon Onyx. He wore a worried expression but masked it behind a scowl as the Mind Siphon stood up and held her head high. She took in a deep breath, mustering a smile on her lips. "Allow me to introduce you to Onyx Ashrevion, the true heir of Crojesian."

All eyes turned to her as the rulers seized her up, taking in everything from her stance to the way she dressed. All of them wore a look of disbelief, a few even shaking their heads to protest this possibility. "You're telling me that she is Onouxia Kaslibieth-Talgran. The heir of Aries and Eshara and the true heir to the Crojesian throne" Cayah stated.

"Yes," Draco responded confidently.

"Prove it" the empress pressed.

"How?" Azura's voice shattered the silent atmosphere. Cayah shrugged, relaxing against her chair. "Her Siphon marks. Everyone knows the mark of the Kaslibieth-Talgran descendent. If she is the true heir, she should have the mark somewhere on her body."

Onyx passed a nervous look to Draco but the emperor did not return her gaze. With a deep sigh, the demi-hybrid loosened the sleeves of her dressed and pulled it down enough to reveal the back of her shoulder. It was decorated in intricate marks of her lineage, black lines intertwining with gold.

A collective gasp came from the table as she adjusted her sleeve back up, whispers overpowering Cayah's voice. "How is this possible? She was supposedly slaughtered" one empress said, gesturing over to one of her court members.

"It's a true miracle" another emperor proclaimed, staring at the demi-hybrid with awestruck eyes. "How did we allow her to slip past our eyes all these years?"

"She's even more beautiful than we could have ever imagined" a third voice chimed in.

"Silence!" Cayah's voice shattered through the crowd. Everyone settled down, turning their attention back to the Empress. She eyed Onyx carefully, her lips twisted into a growing scowl. "So you have proved your identity. What do you need from us?"

"We need your help to train and protect her" Draco pleaded. "She is still so new to her powers and Rheynoak is stopping at nothing to bring her back to his tribe. It's obvious that she belongs here but I can't protect her on my own. I need all of your help."

Onyx waited for an answer, expecting a frown and a series of words that she could not comprehend. Instead, the empress of Krayos bowed her head towards her direction, the other rulers following in her steps. "On behalf of the kingdom of Krayos, I would love to work with you, Draco to protect and train Onouxia Kaslibieth-Talgran."

Cayah rose to her feet, nodding her head. "She is the heir of one of the most powerful rulers the inner circle has ever known. Therefore, she is one of us."

Her gaze traveled to Onyx as if she was still questioning her presence.

"And we protect our own flesh and blood."

Maybe it was because she was on her third glass of wine or the fact that every ruler of the Inner Circle Kingdom was surrounding her every two seconds but Onyx soon began to feel dizzy, barely managing to keep herself up.

The meeting had concluded an hour ago but the demi-hybrid was still spinning as questions were being thrown her way. Rulers from all the inner kingdoms came to her to praise her. Some were even bowing, asking her how long she had been in hiding. Answers flew out of her mouth without a second thought but she doubted they made any sense.

In the far corner of the room, Draco and Cayah were submerged in deep conversation about what they would do next. The emperor wore a worried expression on his face but the empress's hand on his shoulder seemed to calm him down a bit.

Taking a deep breath, the demi-hybrid managed to wiggle herself out of the huge crowd that drowned her. She exchanged her empty glass for a refilled one and wandered around the ballroom, a pounding headache forming in her head.

It felt like knives scraping the inside of her head and Onyx had to close her eyes to make the pain go away. Her ears throbbed and her body felt hot all over but she convinced herself that it was just her being overwhelmed.

"You don't look too good." A strong hand settled on her shoulder and she looked up to see the worried expression on Orion's face. "I'm fine" she tried to convince him, taking another sip of her drink but her stumbling feet gave her away.

"I know a drunk demi-hybrid when I see one," he said, guiding her towards a secluded corner. He sat her down in a nearby chair, watching as she took a deep breath once again. Her headache grew stronger as the feeling of claws being sunk into her head overtook her thoughts.

"I'm not drunk" she insisted, holding her head in her hands. "But I don't feel good."

"Do you need me to get you a glass of water?" he asked but she shook her head. "I need to get rid of this headache. It's killing me" she complained. Orion gently took the glass of wine from her hand. "Hang on. I'll get you some water."

He disappeared, leaving Onyx to clutch her head in pain. A voice sounded in her head and the mental bond that connected her with Alesandria shook viciously. "Onyx, help me" her sister's voice called out to her. "Alesandria" the demi-hybrid whispered. "What's wrong? What happened?"

"Onyx, please help me..." Her voice trailed off into the distance but the pain in Onyx's head grew. It consumed her until she could no longer comprehend what was going on. Her eyes began to water and shrill bells rang in her ear as her sister's cries for help increased.

"Onyx, please help me! They're going to kill me!" Alesandria's voice consumed Onyx's head and the Siphon hissed, holding her head in between her knees. Her nails sunk into her head, pulling at the roots of her hair. "Tell me where you are! I'll come for you!"

"I-I don't know but please help me!"

Alesandria's scream pierced through her thoughts and Onyx collapsed on the floor. The demi-hybrid could barely understand what was happening as her vision became blurry but she didn't stop to question anything. All she could make out was the scattered outlines of bodies as a warm arm wrapped around her shoulder and sat her upright.

Immediately, her eyes adjusted to the bright lights and Draco's face came into view. He held on to her as she caught her breath. A crowd was surrounding her and the other rulers exchanged confused looks with one another. Orion stepped through the crowd and handed her a glass of water to calm her beating heart.

Onyx happily accepted it and drank the water in seconds even though it left a bitter taste in her mouth. Draco held on to her, listening to the rapid beat of her heart decline and the steady rhythm of her chest return before questioning her. "What's wrong?" he asked her.

"Alesandria is in trouble" she informed the emperor. "She contacted me through our bond and she said that they were going to kill her!"

"Rheynoak?" Draco questioned.

Onyx shook her head, still dazed from what had happened. "I guess. I don't know" she said, shaking her head. "But all I know is that she is in danger and we need to rescue her."
