➽Chapter Eighteen
LUNIX IS ALIVE IN THIS CHAPTER! I WAS FEELING A LITTLE ROMANTIC TODAY!
Onyx stormed back into her hut, throwing the door open and letting her cloak fall on the floor.
Tears flowed down from her eyes, her hands shaking as she sank down on the floor, bringing her knees to her chest and letting everything pour out from her soul. Pain shook her body, a strong, sweeping wave she had never experienced in her life.
Of course, the Siphon had been through numerous heartbreaking scenes in her life. Being abandoned by her parents, forced to fend for herself all her life, being isolated from the world, and suffering from numerous lost of people she would have considered her friends either killed by someone else or by the tip of her own blade.
She was no stranger to how painful, how shitty the world can be. But this kind of pain was something different.
Maybe it had to deal with the fact that she fell into the arms of someone she knew was capable of breaking her heart or maybe it was the fact the despite everything he dragged her into, every little word he said that broke her little by little, she still managed to fall for him so hard and so deep.
Or maybe it was the fact that she had been lonely for so many years without a lover and for one second, she thought that she could fill that void in her soul with a lover and be happy for a split second.
She had given herself to him. At all cost and with no second thoughts or remorse, she had thrown herself into the devil's arms and danced a sensual ballad with him under the moonlight. Whatever the reasons were, she now knew that they were stupid and pitiful and wrong in every way possible.
She had been crafting a lie, a veil. She had been playing herself all along and she did not stop to question.
It seemed like hours had passed when the knock on her door came. Sniffling, the Siphon wiped the remainder of her tears and went up to open it to reveal Venix, her blonde hair a disheveled mess and her usual angry violet eyes now nothing but sad pools.
The two beings stood in front of each other, face to face and heart to heart.
It didn't take long for the Bloodbone to embrace her friend, both friends falling into a heap on the floor. Their broken sobs entangled with each other, a tune that would have made even the cruelest of them all shed one tear.
When it seemed as if all their tears were gone, they parted from each other, wiping their face clean. "I can't do this anymore, Onyx" Venix whispered to her, running her fingers through her white hair. "I can't stay here any longer. I have put up with Rheynoak's shit for too long but this is unacceptable. This beyond cruel. It's punishment and I can't stay here knowing I can find the truth somewhere else."
"I understand your reasoning" Onyx replied back after contemplating her friend's statement. "I would do the same thing too."
"I know this is probably harder on you than it is on me," the Bloodbone said, resting a hand on her friend's palm. Their veins lit with colors, exploring each other's pain. Their bodies flooded with intangible emotions, swelling and suffocating.
Taking a deep breath, the Mind Siphon nodded while fighting back the tears in her eyes. "It's just hard to believe that I could fall for someone like that so blindly, so foolishly without questioning his motives," she said, shaking her head. "It's as if I lost my sanity, my logic around him. I let my guard down."
"We both did. That's what love does to you, darling" her friend chimed in.
Onyx shook her head, pursing her lips together. "He never loved me. He loved the idea of me."
The two girls sat together, their heads resting on each other. The silence, while sad and dreading, was rather comfortable, neither of them having to say a word to express how they truly felt. The feeling was already in the air.
"I want to leave this tribe," Onyx said after a while. "I want to break the bond between Rheynoak and I and leave this tribe. But I don't know where I would go." Venix pondered on her words, chewing on her lips. "We can always run off into another desert and build a home there. Just me and you."
The thought brought a smile to the Siphon's lips, her hands stroking the soft strands of the BloodBone's hair. "While that sounds absolutely lovely, different paths are forged for us Venix. We might not be with each other for too long. We both have destinies to conquer."
"But what about me and you?" It was clear that the witch was not ready to part with her friend, her arms curling possessively around the Siphon's arms. "We've always been together, Onyx. Through the good and bad times, we were always there for each other."
"And I will treasure those moments in my heart forever" the Siphon replied back, sighing. "But there are new people we have to meet, people whose lives can be changed by us. We can't just sit here and rot while we know the power we may possibly hold, Venix."
A pause settled between her words before she spoke. "It's not us."
While Venix attempted to argue, she knew that her friend was right. It was not like them to sit down and ponder while they knew the solutions to the problems presented in front of them.
They always acted on instinct. They always trusted their instincts. And they would always trust their instincts until the end of time.
"I don't like the sound of us parting ways" the Bloodbone admitted. "But I understand" Venix sighed, biting her lips at the next words she wanted to say. She contemplated for a while, looking up to see her friend staring mindlessly at the wall.
She was contemplating just as much as she was.
"But always know that I love you Onyx" she continued. "Even when we argue and fight and mess things up, I still love you. You are the only thing close to a family I will ever have. You are my family."
Those words brought joy to Onyx's face, her eyes lighting up like stars. "And I love you Venix. Forever and always."
Another knock sounded at the door breaking the comforting daze that swept around the room. Venix got up this time, walking over to the door and opening it to reveal Lucien, his blue eyes seeming to have lost their color. "Lucien?" Venix questioned. "What happened?"
"Rheynoak is demanding for both of you to come outside right now," he said in a glum voice, not meeting her eyes. "He has one more thing to reveal to the both of you."
"Lucien" Venix said again, softer this time. She reached out to rest a hand on his shoulder but he pulled away, ducking his head in the neck of his cloak. "Please Venix, just come outside. The both of you" he whispered, his voice cracking on the last word.
She noticed the redness of his eyes and the shaking of his fingers but nodded, turning around and signaling for Onyx to get up as well. Both girls walked out of the hut to the center of the tribal grounds, Rheynoak standing there with Alesandria and Draco.
The sun was higher now, the sky breaking with the colors of a new day. The third and final day of Solyerian. The day of Redemption.
The other tribe members would be up and minute now, beginning their decoration of the tribal grounds once more. Rheynoak looked more remorseful than ever, holding several items in his hands. Lucien took his place beside Venix, looking at his former friend with hateful eyes. "Before you three part your ways, I want to give you something."
He started with Lucien, handing him the picture of the both of them with Esmeralda. "I know that the secrets I have held from you about your true identity is unacceptable and you have already expressed your desire to part away with this tribe," he said, his voice breaking on the last several words. "But please, accept this memory."
The Hell Siphon scowled, looking down at the tribe leader's outstretched hand that held the picture. Something told him to smack the picture out of his hand and tighten his hands around the leader's throat. But one look at his hazel eyes and Lucien knew that he couldn't find it in himself to hate him.
But he could most certainly try.
"Thank you," he said, taking the picture. The tribe leader nodded, not meeting his eyes. "Start your journey in the kingdom of Exben. Find her and she'll lead you the way to the answers you have pondered on for years."
With those words, Rheynoak moved on to Venix, his brows pulling into a frown. "While I never appreciated your wild antics or particularity rude behavior, I do admit that the way I treated you and tortured you all these years were explainable. I guess in my own twisted way, I was trying to protect you as well."
Venix didn't reply, simply pursing her lips together as he spoke. "While I have nothing tying you to your family, I do have something for you." Cautiously, he handed her the picture of the wolf with the foreign symbol on its forehead. "Follow Lucien. Your paths are intertwined together" he advised.
He pointed at the picture, tapping it lightly. "Once you figure out who this is, they will lead you to Yagein. She has the key to your future and she's hunting you down. She won't stop until your dead."
Their faced were inches apart, his breath hitting her face. "Be careful Venix" he said before pulling away. The Bloodbone frowned but held the picture close to her chest, never intending to let go.
And last but not least he approached Onyx, his former lover. His eyes couldn't even manage to meet hers for the shame and empathy he felt were too strong. He struggled to find the words to apologize, to plead for her forgiveness and to have her in his arms again.
But even one flicker towards her direction and he knew that he had lost her forever.
"I can't possibly think of anything to say to you Onyx," he said, his voice wavering on his words. "I know sorry won't be enough to possibly comprehend or forgive what I have done to you. But I am hoping that wherever you go, you will find your way to who you truly are meant to be."
Sighing, he handed her the third picture, the portrait of the two baby girls. "Someone I vaguely knew from long ago drew what Aires's daughters would look like if they were ever together" he explained. "I did my best to describe both of you but you were infants, barely living much less able to comprehend what you were going through."
Onyx took the picture, her eyes scanning it. She was unable to tell apart who was who but nonetheless, she hugged the picture to her chest, taking a sharp deep breath. "Thank you" she managed to stutter out. He nodded, licking his lips. "Onyx, I truly am sorry for what I put you through," he said, reaching out to touch her face.
His touch electrified her in a way she didn't want it to. Even with what he did, he still managed to have a pull on her. She shivered at his touch, taking a deep breath. "I can't do this with you Rheynoak. Please, for the love of the stars and gods, get away from me. I don't want this and don't want you."
Her words seemed to sting him a bit, his hand retracting from her face, His eyes stared into hers, shimmering under the early morning sun. "Onyx" he breathed her name once more, softer this time. "I can't stand the thought of us not being together. You're everything I never knew I needed. Please, stay with me. Let's go through this together."
And she wanted to stay. Oh, how Onyx ached to stay. Even though she wanted nothing but to flee the place she had called home for so long, hearing his honey-sweet voice say her name and beg for her presence was almost enough to warp her judgments and fall right back into his arms.
Almost.
"I want to leave this tribe," Onyx said, breaking through his glamorized words. "I can't be here. I don't want to be here and I can't stand seeing your face for one more second" she fibbed, biting back at the words she really wanted to say. "I need to leave. This place is no longer a home for me."
"Where will you go?" he questioned. The Mind Siphon shrugged, swallowing hard. "I don't know. Anywhere but here" she replied back.
The tribe leader swallowed hard but nodded, trying to come up with more words to say. He attempted to open his mouth and argue but a dagger cold look from the Siphon made it very clear that it wouldn't end well for him.
Feeling a cold shiver go down his spine, he pursed his lips together.
"What about me?" Alesandria asked, raising her eyes to meet her gaze. "I know that we just found out that we are half sisters only moments ago but you helped me with a lot. You secured my family in a safe place and brought me here to train. You sacrificed yourself for me."
"I can't force you to leave or stay, Alesandria" Onyx said. "We'll always have a bond. It was forged when we first met and it has grown stronger considering now we share blood between us. And I will always look out for you. But at the same time, anything you decide is your choice. I won't intrude with your personal thoughts."
"My own choices?" Alesandria questioned. The Mind Siphon nodded. "Your own choices."
Even though she didn't like the idea of that, the hybrid nodded, gnawing at her lips.
An awkward silence settled between Rheynoak and Onyx, so thick it could be cut with a knife. "There is really nothing I can say to convince you to stay?" he pleaded one more time. The Mind Siphon shook her head, taking in a deep breath.
"There is nothing between us. I am done with the lies and the excuses and the pain. I gave you a chance and you messed up. There is no turning back from that." Her voice was cold and dry when she spoke, her eyes not making anymore contact with him.
From a distance, the sound of doors opening and members awakening caught their attention. They stumbled out of their huts, tired and confused with disheveled hair and clothes. Clearing her throat, Onyx took a few steps back from Rheynoak, pressing the picture close to her heart.
The day of Redemption activities went on as if she had already left.
Morning rituals blended into afternoon festivities and nightly routines, music pounding through the air and fire crackling on the red sand desert floor. Food was grilled and talents were exposed, the murmur of last night's truths still a topic for gossip.
Onyx has been busy packing her things away. Not that there was a lot to pack anyway.
She had pulled out the one bag she owned her entire life. It was a black bag with a seemingly bottom pit and a thick strap. She packed her clothes, jewelry, and shoes in along with a few books and a couple of weapons. Even little things like the one hand mirror she owned were thrown into the bag as well.
After that, she had taken a cold bath, washing clean of any dirt, any kiss, any touch Rheynoak had bestowed upon her. For every layer of skin he touched, she scrubbed twice as hard. It wasn't until her skin was red and irritated did she soak herself in the cold water and rinse off.
Back in her hut, she wore the same clothes she had woken up in and tied her hair up. She wore the necklace Draco had given her, the one thing and person she did not totally despite from being involved with Rheynoak. Her mighty sword was still strapped to her hip and the picture the tribe leader had given her was packed into the bag.
Last but not least, she wore a black cloak over her shoulders. In the process of buttoning the clamp over, a knock sounded on her door. "Come in" she whispered weakly. The door opened and in walked Draco, dressed in his usual attire of dark pants and a black shirt. His hair was gelled back, his tattooed fingers running through his brown locks.
"You pack quickly," he said to her as he sat down on her bare bed, patting the full bag. Onyx shrugged, finally being able to clamp the button. "The faster I pack, the faster I can get far away from here," she said, sitting across from the emperor. Draco smiled, a little nudge that perked at his lips.
"Where will you go?" he asked. The siphon shrugged, closing her eyes. "That's one thing I haven't figured out yet," she said. "Maybe I'll wander the desert until my feet bleed and the desert maggots find me" she suggested. "Or maybe I'll reside in a mortal kingdom for a while until I have a solid plan."
The emperor nodded, the two sitting in silence for what seemed like forever. When enough time passed, Draco opened his mouth and spoke, "Listen, after today, I will be heading back to Elsavior in a day or two. I have duties I have to return back to. If you want, you can stay with me for a while until you figure something out."
"Elsavior" the Siphon questioned. "Your kingdom?" she questioned. He nodded. "There is more than enough space in the palace for you to stay" he replied back. "And I know a few people that can help you in this dilemma. But I'll only offer it if you are interested."
Onyx pondered on his offer. Elsavior, the infamous realm of Nightdwellers that hid in the inner circle. She knew very little about it, of any immortal kingdoms for that matter of fact. She had only heard it in vague discussions and hushed whispers.
"How is life like in Elsavior?" she asked. "There has been a lot of rumors surrounding it."
"Of course there has been. Half of these tribe leaders here only own the sand dunes they forced others to build for them" he said in a harsh tone. "Elsavior is a place of wonder. Being part of the inner circle immortal kingdoms, we do have a blend of different immortal beings but our biggest population is demi-hybrids and Nightdwellers. There is very little I can say about the outside appearance except for the fact that it's beautiful although I might be biased."
A smile lit his lips, illuminating his features. "You would have to see it for yourself to properly judge."
The Mind Siphon sighed, running her fingers through her tied ponytail. "Do Alesandria's family like it there?" she asked. The Emperor shrugged, leaning back on her bed. "I suppose they do. It is a bit hard for them to adjust considering there are barely any mortals that are allowed to enter the gates of the immortal kingdom. But it's better than being dead."
"This all seems unreal" she muttered underneath her breath. "In all my years of existing and slaughtering, I never thought my world would change like this so suddenly. One minute I am happy and well maintained in the arms of a lover and the next minute, I am thrown into a path I am not sure I want to follow."
"Life is a bitch," Draco said. His eyes slid over to meet hers, the ruby rings around his lights eyes burning bright. "It doesn't like warnings. It just blows into your heart like a storm and doesn't care for the aftermath it leaves. It's up to us to see if we can truly stand the destruction it comes with."
Onyx looked over at the emperor but his eyes were no longer on her, instead toying with the thick strap of the bag. "So what do you say?" he asked. "Are you up for living in the clouds, far away from civilization?"
The Mind Siphon contemplated on his words for a while. It would be foolish of her to trust him so immediately. As coy as he was, he was also very quiet. Maybe a bit too quiet. He never said too much yet he never said too little. He was observant, brooding, always lurking in the shadows yet never coming into the light.
And on top of all that, he and Rheynoak were sworn enemies. Sure, the tribe leader was no longer trustworthy. In fact, he didn't even deserve to be considered in her indecisive thoughts. But even she couldn't deny that if Rheynoak hated Draco so much to the point of wishing death upon him, there must be a pretty good reason why.
Yet when she looked over at Draco, she felt a sense of safety and security she never felt from the tribe. She felt oddly comfortable as if he was already protecting without her knowledge.
Pressing her lips together, Onyx agreed. "Okay, I'll come along with you. But only until I figure out what my next move is and if I can bring Aithne with me."
"Aithne? Your horse?" he questioned. She nodded. "She's a great help and she has mystical powers that can come in handy. I spent money on her for good intentions." The emperor nodded, considering the fact. "Okay, you can bring her along. The palace has stables she can stay in."
"Alright. I'm in."
Draco smiled brightly at her words, letting go of the strap on the bag. "Wonderful, we'll venture off right after the day's festivities are over and the night has passed. We don't have days to spare."
"I wish we did," Onyx said, leaning back on her bed. She buried her face in her hands, rubbing the dark circle's that outlined her eyes. "All the time and days in the world."
The emperor casted a gaze over to the broken Siphon, raising a brow but nodding only a minute after. "We all wish for that, Onyx," he said, fidgeting with the rings on his fingers. "Unfortunately though, we are not in favor of the Gods. Not anymore."
Venix had finished packing the last of her stuff.
She had thrown every bit of possession she had at any time, not bothering to fold it neatly. She was desperate to escape this hellhole, to run and find out more about her family and where she came from. To find out her purpose in life. Her destiny.
On the floor in her tiny hut sat Lucien, his knees drawn up to his chin and the picture Rheynoak gave him in his hands. His usually neat hair was pulled into a messy bun, dark bags drawn under his eyes. He had not spoken any more than five words ever since Rheynoak had allegedly told him of his true destiny.
A destiny the Bloodbone still had no idea of.
All she knew was that by the look on his face, it was a memory he would rather keep suppressed. "Officially done," she said, sinking next to him on the floor. "The last of my stuff is gone." The Hell Siphon barely nodded, his blue eyes fixed on the picture. His fingers shook as he traced the outline of his dead sister, his touch lingering on her smiling face.
"Lucien, please tell" the Bloodbone begged, sinking down on her knees until she was at his height. "What did Rheynoak tell you?" The Hell Siphon took in a sharp breath, contemplating on his words. His icy eyes briefly flickered to Venix, a frown on his lips.
"It's a story I would rather save for later" he breathed after minutes passed by. Sighing, he neatly folded the picture and put it in the pocket of his jeans. He leaned his head back against the headboard of her bed, running his hands down his face. "I've wasted so many years by his side. Believed so many lies he had said. How utterly stupid of me."
"It's not stupid. We all choose to believe that the people we walk with are truthful to us. But sometimes, that's not how destiny plays out." Lucien fumed, folding his hands across his chest. "I hate him. I hate him more than words could possibly fathom."
"No you don't" Venix whispered. The Hell Siphon immediately eyed her, raising his brows. "And why do you state that?" he questioned.
"Because Lucien, no matter what you feel about him right now, you and I both know that Rheynoak is someone you care deeply about. Even if you don't want to consider the fact that your heart still opens to him, the truth of the matter is that, it exposes itself to him. Too much and too fast."
Lucien pondered on her words, opening his mouth to argue but closing it once again when he realized that there was no fighting her words. Everything she spoke rang a little bit of the truth he's been trying to deny.
His heart did open up to Rheynoak. Too much, too fast, and too deep. And he let it happen with no second thought for somehow, he considered the tribe leader the brother he never had. And in some way, he would always be his brother.
The Hell Siphon hissed and cursed underneath his breath, rushing his fingers through his bundled hair.
She was right. She was always right. Well, almost always right
"Let's not discuss him right now," he said, moving closer to the witch. Venix held her breath as their fingers touched, his head cautiously leaning on her shoulder. Her whole body froze, not knowing what to do. Her heart told her to push him away but her body relaxed around him, welcoming his warmth.
The last time they had been this close in an enclosed space, there had been no words, only kisses and touches lingering on each other's skin.
"Okay, we can talk about where we are going to go from here. Rheynoak said to start our journey in the Kingdom of Exben. If you want, we can map out the territories and set our eyes on a few inclusive spaces-"
"Let's not discuss our journey right now" he suddenly interrupted, shaking his head.
Venix scoffed, shaking her head. "But we have to. I mean, aren't you the least bit suspicious that our paths are intertwined together? We have to help each other out. We are going to be on our own soon."
"And we'll cross that bridge when we get there" he continued on in a tired voice. "Which will probably be tomorrow. But for now, can we just not talk? Can we just forget everything and enjoy the silence and each other?"
His request was odd but his actions were surprising. With a tired gaze, he looped his arms around her waist and closed his eyes. Venix froze on contact, her body yielding away from him. But he held on to her so tightly, already drifting to sleep.
Venix struggled from his grasp but in the end, he still held on to her like a pillow. "You do realize there is a bed" she whispered to him, staying in a frozen state. "I know" he muttered back in a low tone, a sigh escaping his lips. "But I like this better."
And then the Hell Siphon froze, his grip on her loosening for a minute. "Unless you're uncomfortable with it." His voice wavered when he said the words, his eyes meetings hers. For a second the Bloodbone witch considered pushing him away and sending him out of her room.
They were crossing boundaries, passing lines they had drawn to distance themselves from each other. But deep down in her bones, Venix knew that was the last thing she wanted to do. The very last thing. So instead of being cold and isolating him out, tonight, just for tonight, she nodded and let him embrace her.
"I don't mind" she answered him, beckoning Lucien to nod and rest his head on her shoulders. A yawn stifled from his lips, his face buried in her white locks. The Bloodbone let a small smile pass her lips, softly smoothening the velvet of his cloak.
"Do you think I made the right choice leaving this tribe?" he questioned her. "Do you think I made the right choice leaving Rheynoak?" The Bloodbone passed him a look, seeing a crease between his brows. "Well, how do you feel about this whole situation?" she asked.
"This tribe, it's been a home to me for so long. It's been a part of my life for centuries. Rheynoak has been with me through thick and thin. He's seen me at my bloodiest and at my most angelic. All of this...It feels like leaving a family behind but at the same time, I can't be around someone who constantly lies to me and uses me as a pawn in his game."
Venix chose her words carefully, seeing how vulnerable the Hell Siphon was in his state of mind. She knew that the two beings had a powerful bond, one that would still exist no matter how many miles were in between them.
"Sometimes, Lucien, we have to leave things behind and figure out who and what we truly are before we can return back to our original ground" she advised, patting his shoulders. "Don't think of it as abandoning him completely but simply taking a break to forge your own path."
"I hope your right" he uttered. "I'm always right" she responded back. A laugh escaped his lips, a warm sound that tickled her skin.
For a while, he didn't speak, the two of them just sitting in complete silence. "Why do you think our paths are forged together? he commented after a while.
"Because the gods have decided to play a cruel trick on me by pairing me up with the one person whose head gets lost in the clouds so easily" Venix replied back. Playfully, the Hell Siphon pinched her arm. "Speak for yourself" he replied back. She rolled her eyes but didn't say anymore, simply taking a deep breath.
He hesitated before continuing, "I'm scared of what lies ahead."
"We both are" she admitted herself, running her fingers through her hair. "But we'll make it through."
"And how are you so sure?" he asked. Venix laughed, resting her head on the board of her bed. "Because it's me and you. At the end of the day, we always find a way, Lucien."
He nodded, choosing not to ask any more questions, instead let his head swim with the possibilities of tomorrow. Minutes passed by and Lucien closed his eyes and finally drifted into sleep, pulling her closer as she patted his back. "Goodnight, Venix."
His voice was that of a lost child, his body curled up against hers, holding on like he never wanted to let go.
Venix eyed him, feeling her lips twitch a little bit before replying back. "Goodnight, Lucien."
