Chapter 26. The Park Talk

Annie's POV

The next day, I woke up in my room with Hayley next to me on my bed. Even though she's not a kid anymore, she sometimes likes to crawl into bed with me if she has a nightmare.

I quickly and quietly snuck out of bed to not disturb Hayley before going downstairs.

"Good morning." I greeted as I walked into the kitchen.

"Morning, Annie." Skylar greeted back with a smile as I sat down. "Did you sleep well?"

I shrugged. "Time difference kinda messes me up, but I'll get used to it."

"And by the time you do, it'll be time to leave, right?" Skylar said with a slight laugh as she handed me a plate of eggs and bacon.

I nodded. "Yeah, that happened to me when I came for you and Dad's wedding."

Skylar and I ate at the table in silence for a while before she asked, "So, what are your big summer plans over here? What did you want to do?"

I shrugged. "I'm not sure to be honest. I was thinking of going to Six Flags with Katie or something, but she seems to have a new best friend."

"What do you mean?" Skylar asked.

"Katie and Brennan's new girlfriend are really close, like almost as close as Katie and I once were. But once I got sick and then I moved away, we got a little more distant..." I explained. "I honestly don't even know if we're best friends anymore."

"You're irreplaceable, Annie." Skylar said reassuringly as she placed a hand on my shoulder. Then she stood up and went to wash her dishes.

"Tell that to Brennan." I muttered under my breath.

Just then, my phone buzzed, and sure enough, it was a text from Brennan.

"Speak of the devil." I said with a small laugh as I got up and went into the living room.

I felt that this conversation was really awkward, and I didn't know what to say at the end.

But I guess, since I agreed to see him today, I wouldn't be able to avoid anything, right?

About a half hour later, I pulled up in front of the park across the street of Brennan's school.

I looked through the windshield to see Brennan sitting on a bench in the pouring rain; it looked almost depressing.

I grabbed an umbrella and slowly got out of the car and walked over to the bench.

"Hey." I awkwardly greeted as I stood in front of him.

Brennan looked up and gave me a small smile. "Hey. I'm glad you came."

"Thanks." I replied.

"Want to sit here or...?"

"I'll sit here." I offered as I sat on the cold and wet bench with him.

We sat there for a few moments in silence before Brennan said, "It's weird not seeing you everyday around here."

I shrugged. "I moved and we broke up, Brennan, so of course you're not gonna see me."

"Long distance is hard." Brennan stated.

I nodded. "Especially with a three hour time difference between two busy teenagers."

Brennen nodded in agreement. "I'm really sorry it didn't work out. I should've tried harder—"

"Brennan, you don't need to apologize." I interrupted.

"Yes, I do." He said as he turned to face me, but I just stared at my lap. "I know I hurt you, and I'm so sorry that I did. I never meant to."

"That's what every guy has said after every breakup. What makes you so different?" I asked.

"I'm not saying I'm different. I'm just trying to apologize to you." Brennan said calmly. "And if you want, I hope we can stay friends."

And that, ladies and gentlemen, was my breaking point.

"You want to stay friends after this?" I asked with a sarcastic laugh at the end. "Brennan, you did hurt me. You just dumped me like I meant nothing to you, and two weeks later you're dating 'oh-so-perfect Nicole' like she was a goddess compared to me.

"I get it, I was dying right in front of you, and I'm so sorry you and everyone else had to see me die in your hands. But you chose to be with me, and then after we broke up you didn't call or text me.

"I told you I wanted to stay friends, even though it broke my heart, but you didn't try. And now you want to?" I found myself in tears at the end.

I finally looked up with tears and rain running down my face. Brennan looked sad and sorry, but I was still mad at him.

"Jules—" he began as he stuck out his hand to reach for mine.

"I have to go." I simply stated as I got up and started jogging towards the car.

"Annie!" Brennan called after me.

I quickly closed my umbrella and put it in the passengers seat before driving away. When I was about ten minutes away from the park, I parked in the parking lot of a shopping plaza and just cried in my car.

Why did you ever get involved with a boy, Annie? I thought to myself. All they do is hurt you in the end.

But I guess that's what makes the game so fun and interesting, right? You want to see if you're the lucky winner and you get a good guy.

Better luck next time, huh?

A/N: hey, sorry for the short and crappy chapter, I just thought I'd update because I haven't been on in a little while.

I've been busy this past week and now this coming week because of band camp. I had to go Monday through Thursday to my high school from 8am-6pm and it was crazy and it killed me but I'm alive (?) and excited for this season. And next week (technically tomorrow) I have band camp again Monday through Thursday but 3-8pm.

Anyway besides my personal life, how are you? What did you think of this chapter? Do you really believe Brennan is sorry, or do you think he's trying to clear his conscious? Does anyone here even like Nicole (because I don't lmao)?

Also did anyone hear that there's a rumor that Paige is getting Caleb's old room? They're gonna take out his stuff and turn into Paige's room; like wtf? I'm pissed about it tbh, it feels like they're just throwing away everything about him; the car, his room, his channel, it just feels like he was never even alive anymore and I hate it. Caleb deserves better than this :( and what are your thoughts on this?

Anyway I hope you enjoyed this chapter! If so please don't forget to vote comment and share because I love your feedback!

Thanks, until next time ;)
