Chapter 16. "Promise?"

Brennan's POV

When we got to the hospital, the paramedics told me to wait in the waiting room since I wasn't 'immediate family', which sounded like a load of bull to me.

Thankfully, I only had to wait a few minutes for Mr. LeBlanc, Hayley, Skylar, and Paige to arrive and they took me in to see Annie with them.

"What happened?" Mr. LeBlanc asked as he walked in.

"I don't know, one minute she was fine, then the next she threw up and then threw up blood." I explained.

"Oh my god." Mr. LeBlanc muttered as he went to Annie's side.

"Daddy." She croaked weakly as she held his hand.

"I'm right here." He said.

Annie smiled weakly before she started hyperventilating and the heart monitor was beeping like crazy.

Annie was desperately gasping for air before a nurse came and put an oxygen mask over her face, which slowed down her heart rate and she began to relax.

"Why did that happen?" Skylar asked the nurse.

"She may have gone into a panic, or it could've been due to the loss of blood." the nurse explained.

"Brennan..." Annie muttered. Her father moved aside as I stood on my knees next to her bed.

"I'm here Jules." I said with a small smile as I held her hand and rubbed my thumb over her knuckles.

"I wanna go home." Annie sobbed.

"I know." I said as I embraced her. "You will be home soon."

She sniffed, tears streaming down her cheeks. "Promise?" She said, her voice cracking.

I nodded, feeling tears in my eyes. "Promise."

Later on, Mom picked me up and took me home. But before I left, the doctors gave Annie horrible news.

Her cancer was now at stage 3, stage 4 being the deadliest and basically there's no recovering at that point. She now practically has to live in the hospital and get chemo more often, since her previous dosages weren't obviously working.

When we got home, Mom told me to sleep, but I couldn't; I couldn't stop thinking about Annie.

I became a mess, so I had to leave my room so I wouldn't disturb Ryan and I went down to the basement.

I remembered what Annie mentioned earlier, how we first met down here and instantly became best friends. I smiled at the memory and sat on the couch right where I was at the time. I glanced over and could imagine little Annie sitting next to me and playfully fighting me for the V-Smile controller.

I closed my eyes and continued thinking of fun memories of us, and the first one that came to mind was the field day video.

Katie, Ryan, and I arrived at the LeBlanc house, and Caleb greeted us at the door.

"Hey! Come on in! Everyone else is already in the backyard." He grinned as we went in and headed towards the backyard.

"Brennan!" Annie exclaimed as she ran to me and hugged me.

"Hi!" I said before she hugged Katie and Ryan.

I remember laughing and thanking her as she gave me a cool introduction. I also remember trying to be competitive with her and the girls, and it was a lot of fun that day.

After we finished filming, Annie suggested we all swim in the lake, so we did.

While in the lake, I snuck up behind her and lifted her onto my shoulders. She screamed and giggled as I tried running through the lake.

"Mind if I steal her?" Caleb asked at one point.

"No! Let me down!" Annie giggled as Caleb and I ran around the lake and continued swapping her on our shoulders.

After that video was uploaded to YouTube, many people began shipping us and starting #Brannie all over social media. It started making Annie and I feel uncomfortable, and we actually avoided each other for a couple months until I approached her when she came over one day.

"Hey, Annie?" I asked when I made sure we were alone and there were no cameras in sight.

"Hm?" Annie asked, trying to ignore me.

"I know all the Brannie stuff is making us both awkward and uncomfortable, but I wanted to tell you that it's okay, and that I don't like you that way. You're amazing and my best friend, but I don't like you that way, so it shouldn't be awkward between us." I explained. "Are we okay now?"

Annie glanced up at me and then nodded with a smile. "Yes, thank you. And by the way, I think you're amazing and also my best friend, and I don't like you that way either."

We hugged and were inseparable best friends again after that, and nothing like that bothered us again.

We didn't care how many people commented "Brannie" on videos and all our posts when we weren't together, and we didn't care about fans tagging us in their brannie edits; we were happy.

I was glad Annie was starting to remember meeting me and bits of her life, but she's moving to California, and there's nothing I can do to stop that. Even if she did remember us dating and she still had her feelings towards me, what would that do? She's still going to California, and I haven't told her, but it breaks my heart just thinking that I won't be able to see her as often.

I felt tears swell in my eyes. I wiped them away and closed my eyes again, finally falling asleep.

A/N: I know this was a shorter chapter, sorry about that. I wanted to include another scene in here, but it was too long and I think it should have its own chapter; plus it'll get the story moving faster, and I don't know about you, but I still want this story to last.

Anyway what did you think of this chapter? How do you feel about Annie's cancer? Do you think if Annie does remember everything, will that mean she'll stay in Maryland?

Also did any of you notice that stranger things inspired scene; "promise?" gets me every time 😭 here's a few cute pics:

I hope you enjoyed this chapter! If so please don't forget to vote comment and share because I love your feedback!

Thanks, until next time ;)
