Chapter Thirteen - Adelaide

The entirety of Sota watched me as I made my way down the carpet to the limo. I wore my best dress, a plain blue cloth dress, and tied my hair in a ponytail. The limo was too fancy for me and I scowled through the whole drive, wanting nothing more than to be home with a pot of tea and a good book. When I reached the flight two girls were sitting there. One was Daina Hart of Belcourt. She had her short brown locks tucked behind her ears and she wore a black dress with paneling. The top of the dress had a patch of armor on it with pure gold lining. The other girl, Sayra Chin Lee of Summer, was also a five. Her hair, which used to be short and choppy with bangs, was miraculously shiny. Her bangs were gone, leaving only a bob. She wore a dark red dress that seemed to have been cut extra short. Her lips were smeared with chapstick and her battered boots looked like they had been covered in marker in an attempt to make them glossier. I wanted to roll my eyes. A five who really cared about this stupid competition. I sat in silence next to the girls. "Are you excited?" Asked Sayra. Daina was reading a gossip rag, her face in a permanent scowl. "Not particularly." I muttered.

Sayra looked confused. "But you could win the prince! Become a princess!" She said, her eye's dreamy. I laughed. "Like a lowly five like me could win." I said. Sayra shrank back. She gave me a small glare before turning away. I rolled my eyes. At least I didn't give her false hope. When we arrived we walked down a long carpet while people shouted our names. "WE LOVE YOU DAINA!!!!" Someone yelled. "SAY HELLO TO YOUR HUSBAND FOR ME SAYRA!!!!!!!" Someone yelled. Sayra blushed crimson and I wanted to shake her hard and tell her to just give up. That's exactly what I was gonna do. When we make it to the palace, we all cram into a line, preparing to introduce ourselves to the prince. I yawned loudly, causing a few ugly glares my way. When I finally met the prince my breath was taken away. He has chestnut brown shiny hair and a crooked grin. "It's a pleasure to meet you." He said, bowing. I crossed my arms, trying not to be deterred by his handsome looks. "Let's just get this over with. I'm Adelaide." I said. His handsome face twisted in annoyance. I walked away from him, grinning when I heard his scowl. I watch as Sayra makes a fool of herself, tripping over the prince.

She blushed multiple times and leaned forward eagerly. I felt bad for her, she obviously didn't realize that she stood no chance compared to these rich gorgeous girls. Some of the girls played up, giggling and flaunting their shiny teeth. Daina shook his hand so hard I swear I heard a crack. Even if she was from a rich powerful family, there's no way the prince could ever fall for her. She walked stiffly, her posture a nightmare. Her back is held straight in a strange way, as though she's afraid of slouching. I wiped that image from my mind, finding myself not concerned with the wellbeing of a three. It's not as though they have ever hungered, starved on the streets begging for scraps. No, Daina wanted to be here, she wasn't forced. I scowled at her, feeling bitterness rise up. I felt warm eyes burn into mine and I turned my head slightly, seeing the Prince. His deep brown eyes mesmerize me. I snapped myself back into reality, quickly covering my soft smile with an annoyed face. He turned his head away, which caused a pang of annoyance. It's not like I care anyway. Sayra seems to have not learned her lesson. "Isn't he glorious! He's more handsome in person than ever." She said. She had a hopeful smile on her face and she seems to gain more confidence.

"Don't be silly, he has no interest in us fives." I said. Even so, my gaze flickered to his. Sayra gasped. "You're jealous aren't you! About what those people said on the carpet, about him being my future husband! You're so lowly." Her lower lip wobbled and she glared at me, turning to smile at the prince. I flushed red. How dare she! I smoothed down my blue dress and scowled to myself, wondering why I was in such a sour mood. On second thought I messed up my hair and dress. Might as well show everyone that I couldn't care less. I pick my hangnails, not bothering to despair over my "ruined cuticles" Like all the other girls would. Another girl. Everly West was standing not too far away and by the look on her face, she had heard my conversation with Sayra. She started laughing in a polite way, covering her mouth and giving me an expression that made me want to rip her hair out. "Playing hard to get is not charming honey." She said. She flipped her dark luscious hair and rolled her eyes. I clenched my fists as Sayra gave me a smirk. That little goody two shoes had an evil side.

I stifled a glare, instead observing the gorgeous palace walls. Diamonds encrusted sculptures on the walls. Even one small crumb of the wall would be enough to start a new life. This angers me more. The stupid prince and his stupid royal family. Flaunting their riches. I resist the urge to somehow grab a glimmering jewel off the shining chandelier that pours celestial light onto the girls. I was going to be trapped here, and I had no idea for how long.
