Nine

America
I found myself pacing back and forth across Maxon's office again.

Maxon sat in his office chair, with elbows on his desk and his head in his hands. I knew Maxon well enough to know that my pacing would be irritating him, but he said nothing; allowing me to continue without comment.

We were anticipating Aspen's arrival with the DNA test results. Whilst we had told the selected girls that the results would be available tomorrow, we had the palace doctor hand us Celia Gardener's results that evening as soon as they were available, which was going to be any second now.

Maxon had some untouched paperwork in front of him, which he had pulled out in an attempt to distract himself, but he had been unable to even pick up a pen. I couldn't blame him, I had been unable to think of anything else all day apart from the results of this test and what it would mean if it showed a DNA match.

There was a faint knock on the door, and Maxon immediately bade the person enter. Aspen walked into the room with a large envelope in his hands.

"No one has seen it, even the doctor," Aspen said.

"Thank you, Aspen," Maxon smiled, holding out his hand to take the envelope from Aspen.

Aspen hesitated for a moment, before handing it to Maxon. I immediately seized it from Maxon and ripped the seal open, pulling the piece of paper inside out.

Upon reading the paper I froze, unable to comprehend what I had read.

"America?" Maxon asked, "what does it say?"

"We were right," I replied quietly.

"We were what?"

"We were right, her DNA matches the boys," I said, Maxon didn't seem to believe me, he took the paper from my hands to confirm the fact himself.

Maxon's mouth fell open as he stared at the paper, which clearly showed Celia Gardener to be our lost daughter.

Celia
A maid approached me in the Women's Room and told me that the King and Queen had requested to see me, which I found strange. The way in which they had been looking at me earlier along with their initially cold attitudes to me made me sure that I was about to get kicked out of the palace.

General Ledger, whom I had seen on various editions of the report, was waiting for me outside of the women's room, and he led me through the halls towards where the King and Queen were in silence. General Ledger didn't let on what he was thinking, which meant that even more scenarios ran wild through my mind.

He stopped outside a room with two guards stationed at the door. General Ledger cleared his throat and turned to look at me.

"What you're going to hear will come as a shock to you," he said, his face still unreadable, "but just know this, nothing will happen unless you want it to."

"Okay." I was very confused at this point, having no idea what he was talking to.

General Ledger knocked on the door, and after a quiet, "come in," from the other side of the door, he pulled it open and ushered me into the room.

The door closed behind me and I realised that General Ledger had not entered with me. I took in the room. It was stunning, the trims were gold with ornate flowers carved into them. There were several portraits hanging on the walls. One had a young King Maxon standing in the middle of two people on thrones, the late King Clarkson and Queen Amberly. Another showed King Maxon and Queen America with both of the princes, there were several others with members of the royal family whom I didn't recognise.

King Maxon himself sat behind a large mahogany desk, which had been cleared of papers, leaving it empty apart from a couple of framed photographs. One of the photos showed the King and Queen on their wedding day, and another showed the full royal family, the King, Queen, both of the Princes and Princess Celeste (the last three being babies).

Queen America sat beside her husband, and a chair had been placed across the desk. She smiled warmly at me, but from the way she kept flexing her fingers I could tell that she was nervous, "would you sit please?" she gestured at the empty seat.

I sat down, almost tripping over the hem of my dress as I did. The King and Queen said nothing, but both of them looked at me in silence, seemingly unable to speak.

Several minutes passed and I couldn't bear to be silent for much longer, I cleared my throat and opened my mouth to beg them not to throw me out of the castle, but the small noise seemed to have jogged both of them out of their dazes.

"Celia," said King Maxon, my name seemed sour on his tong, "I'm not going to sugarcoat this because frankly, I don't know how I would. I'm sure you know about our daughter Celeste who was taken from us as a baby?"

He seemed to want confirmation that I knew what I was talking about, "yes of course," I said, "everyone knows."

"Well, the DNA that you provided us this morning has confirmed our suspicions that you are in fact, Celeste."

I said nothing, my lips parted slightly in shock, and I looked away from the King, down at my own hands.

"You don't have to say anything," said Queen America, "we are having the DNA run again to ensure that there has been no error, but we are sure that there wasn't."

"Obviously you cannot be part of the selection anymore," King Maxon continued, "we will make arrangements for you to move to a room on the family wing."

"And of course we won't announce anything to the country until you are ready," Queen America pressed on.

"We can give you anything that you want, you just have to say the word." Maxon was beaming at me.

I blinked, having hardly taken in anything that either of them had said.

"There must've been a mistake," I said slowly, "I'm not-I'm just me, I'm not a Princess!"

"There's been no mistake, and as I said, we're confirming that there was indeed no error," Maxon said.

"We understand how overwhelming this must be for you, and anything we can do to make it easier we will do," Queen America had her hands clutched in her lap, seemingly stopping herself from reaching across the desk to grasp my hand.

"There is one thing that I want," I said, still looking down at my hands, believing that if I looked up I would burst into tears because of how overwhelming this whole situation was.

"Anything," said the King.

"I want my Mum."
