Chapter 11 - Expect the Unexpected

I'm in advance apologizing for the cringe of this chapter.

An ear-splitting scream of pain shattered the silence, echoing through the hallways. Jesse froze.

Another cry rang out, but this was quieter, weaker, and ended abruptly with a thump, like the owner of the screams had fallen.

Jesse was paralysed with shock for another few seconds, before she shook her head, coming to her senses. She leaped off the couch. There was only one other person with her in the house...

"Petra!" Jesse called anxiously as she darted up the stairs. "Petra, what happened!?" She called, coming to a sharp stop at her friend's bedroom door.

"Petra?" Jesse asked a little quieter, as she gently pushed open the door.

To her complete surprise the room appeared completely empty.

"Petra?" Jesse called again, stepping into the room.

One of the bedside tables was knocked over, explaining the thumps Jesse heard, and the covers on Petra's bed was slightly wrinkled, indicating that she had been laying down before whatever disturbed her, did so.

"Petra?" Jesse asked again, her voice shaking as she spoke.

She looked around the room, hoping to catch sight of her friend, when suddenly something blue on the ground caught her eye. Jesse carefully knelt down, reaching over to pick up the blue cloth. Her breath caught in her throat. It was Petra's bandanna.

Jesse became aware of the sound of heavy breathing, deep shaky breaths. It wasn't hers. She looked around her anxiously, when she heard soft groaning. She could just about make out a moving shadow, on the other side of Petra's bed.

"Petra...?" Jesse asked softly, slowly edging closer.

As she peered around the corner, she saw something that made her loose her balance completely. Jesse stumbled back, landing flat on her back, before scrambling up into a sitting position and edging back in fear.

There, on the wooden floor in front of her, half sitting, half laying down, was a wolf. A fully grown, grey wolf, with long smooth fur and a pink tongue hanging out as it panted.

"Oh god, no, no, no.." Jesse repeated in fear, backing up until she was against the wall.

She could feel her heart thrashing about in her chest. Her fingers gripped onto the bandanna so tightly, her knuckles turned slightly white. She looked around her anxiously, when she spotted Petra's gleaming golden sword propped up against the wall.

"Miss Butter, just when I need you." She breathed, grabbing the helm of the sword.

The golden weapon was heavy in her hands, but Jesse barely noticed, as she held it out in front of her, pointing the sharp blade at the wolf. But to her complete surprise, at the sight of the sword, the wolf whimpered and scampered back, trembling slightly. It was... afraid?

It looked up at Jesse with pleading eyes. As it did, Jesse nearly dropped the sword in horror. It's eyes were unlike any wolf's eyes she had ever seen.. they looked almost... human?

The wolf whined again, looking up at Jesse with it's pleading blue eyes. But Jesse was frozen against the wall in shock. Her left leg was tingling with pins and needles from the way she was hunched, but Jesse barely noticed. There was something so familiar about those eyes, Jesse couldn't help but stare into them.

The wolf whined again, stepping closer to Jesse. Jesse backed up instantly. The wolf whimpered, pulling it's ears back.

Jesse felt her breaths coming out in short gasps. She knew she needed to calm down, but she couldn't. She just kept staring into those familiar, lifelike eyes...

Suddenly Jesse seemed to realise something. She felt the colour drain from her face, and she suddenly felt light-headed.

"P-Petra?" She stammered.

The wolf nodded it's head, whining as it walked all the way up to Jesse. Jesse felt like she might pass out. Was this wolf her friend? Somehow, some way, was Petra now a wolf?

The wolf whined, pressing her cold snout into Jesse's sweaty hand. Jesse looked down and Petra looked up at her.

"Oh my god what happened..." Jesse breathed.

The wolf whined again, closing her blue eyes. Jesse reached out her hand, which was shaking violently. She hesitantly touched the soft, grey fur.

Petra whined again, walking all the way up to Jesse and nuzzling her head into Jesse's chest. Jesse had to take deep breaths to stop herself pulling away.

Calm down, Jesse, this isn't a wolf... It's your best friend, she's not going to hurt you. She thought to herself, as she lifted a trembling hand to stroke Petra's soft grey fur.

Petra rested her head on Jesse's knee, sighing heavily, before whining again softly. Jesse wished she could understand what her friend was trying to tell her.

- A few minutes earlier -

Petra slowly walked up the stairs, shakily putting one foot in front of the other. She held her head as she walked.

By the time she stepped into her room, the throbbing in her head had gotten even worse. Petra pulled her blue bandanna off, carelessly dropping it onto the floor, before she sat down heavily on her bed.

Her ears were ringing. She slowly lay down, closing her eyes to ease the pain, which was becoming so bad, she started to feel sick. Suddenly, it was as if all her muscles contracted and body was filled with intense pain, making Petra recoil on her bed, screaming in agony.

She tried to get up, only to have her muscles tense up in even more pain. She cried out again, her voice now hoarse and low.

Petra tried getting up again, but found that she barely had any control over her body. In another failed attempt to get up, she completely rolled off her bed, her shoulder coming into harsh contact with the bedside table.

Petra wanted to scream, but the fight was drained from her body, as she lay on the carpet, gasping for air. She didn't feel natural, it was like she was in an unfamiliar body. She could hear somebody call her name in the distance, but didn't have the strength to respond.

Petra tried getting up, failing miserably. The weight of her body now felt uneven, and it felt like she had no idea how to use her limbs. Petra looked down at her hands, only to find they weren't there. Instead, she was looking down at two, grey paws. She gasped, only to have her voice come out in a dog-like whimper.

You're probably thinking right now... what?

Eh yeah. Gonna admit, I'm not proud of this chapter myself. I feel like it could've been much better. Usually when I'm not satisfied with my chapters I keep stalling in posting them. Well, I'm trying to drop that habit, here's the chapter XD

I know things doesn't make sense right now.

Like, I know the whole story and I know what's going to happen. I know why everything happens as it does, and I know the reasons behind the events.

But I'm trying to imagine what it would be like to read for someone who's still waiting to learn all the hidden secrets of this book. >-<
I get that at this point, there appears to be a lot of holes in my writing, things doesn't make sense yet. I know sometimes you read a book, and it eventually ends and you're just thinking "What? Half of the things in here happened for no reason."

I'll say it now, it's not going to be that way with this book. I'm not just going to be dropping in random elements, even though it may seem that way at first. As you progress through this book, things will make sense, and you'll understand why things happened.

I know you're probably wondering why I'm telling you all this. After all, isn't that how it's supposed to be?
Well yea, but I have read quite some books (both on wattpad and not.) that's a mess. Things happen for no apparent reason, and by the time the book end half of the stuff wasn't explained, things that excited you didn't play out at all.

I'm trying to avoid that in my book. And I don't want somebody to read halfway, and think it'll end up unexplained.

This author's note is almost longer than the chapter itself, what am I doing with my life?
I'm basically just rambling to try and make up for the cringe XD

I almost want to publish the next chapter right now, just to get past this confusing one.

I'm just going to wrap up here, I hope you enjoyed this! XD
I'll see ya'll very soon with the next chapter!
