Chapter 3 Time is of the Essence

Everyone is in the main area of the execution site. Someone is tied up on the pole with their hands and feet tied and a blind fold on their eyes and the noose on their neck)

Reverend: Take off the blindfold. I want to see their face.

(The executioner does and its revealed its David he looks around scared and terrified)

Reverend: May only the lord judge your sick games!

David: Please, don't.

(He says with tears in his eyes. The reverend signals the executioner to pull the lever having the noose tighten around David's neck and before his demise happens, a scream is heard in the bedroom of Cordelle's house. Cordelle jumps wide awake from the cot in the main room of the small house having her take the blankets quickly off of her. She runs into her room and tries to wake David up by shaking him gently)

Cordelle: David wake up! You're having a nightmare! David!

(He jolts awake crying while hyperventilating and Cordelle shushes him silently she pulls him into her arms and hugs him comforting him while gently shushing him)

Cordelle: Its okay. You're okay.

(She continues to hold him)

you wanna tell me what the dream was about?

(He goes all quiet shaking his head while she holds him)

Cordelle: its alright. You don't have to. You'll be okay.

*****

(A couple hours go by and Cordelle is seen in the kitchen getting done cooking breakfast. She gets a plate ready and walks to the other direction)

David: Who is that for?

(Cordelle looks at the plate then back st David)

Cordelle: Its for my mom...I'll be back in a minute.

(She leaves the plate of food in her mother's bedroom and goes back to the kitchen table having the other plate ready for David but instead of eating it, he stares at it while Cordelle grabs a cup of coffee wanting to say something to David but feels the need not to because of what happened this morning)

David: So you don't live here by yourself?

Cordelle: No. Me and my mom. Just the two of us.

David: Where's your mom?

Cordelle: She's in her bedroom. She can't come out...or...she doesn't want to.

David: Why?

Cordelle: Its complicated.

(Then she sees a lot of dishes in the sink)

Oh. I better get to washing before we get to work. Good lord, I haven't even had time to get dressed for work.

David: Um...if you want...I could wash the dishes while you get dressed.

Cordelle: No. That's okay. You're a guest in my house I can't put that on you, David.

David: No. I want to. I know it sounds strange, but chores sound a lot more fun to do than working. Please let me do the dishes.

(She smiles at him)

Cordelle: Okay. Be careful with the utensils. The knives and everything. I'll be back.

(When she goes to get dressed for work she checks on David)

Cordelle: How'd you do?

(She checks the dishes on the side all clean)

Wow. David. Not even a smudge on these.

(She takes out a white glass plate with no leftover stuff on it)

where'd you learn how to do that? You're a natural.

David: I'm the oldest in my house and I have to be pretty much whatever my parents expect of me.

(She shakes her head)

Cordelle: You don't have time to be a kid?

David: I'm the oldest. I have to grow up fast...

(then Cordelle changes the subject)

Cordelle: We better get to work. Don't wanna be late.

(They both head out the door and go over to their jobs then one of Larry's assistant's come over making an announcement to the whole grave digging site)

Assistant: Alright. Listen up! Because I'm only going to say this once! Today we're gonna be claiming tons of bodies courtesy of Larry.

(He takes out a rolling body cart)

you're all going to be rolling this cart here having all the bodies go on top of another. You don't ask how they died or how they got here. You're just gonna do your job and get outta here. And I'd do it fast if I was you. We're gonna be at this up until 6 PM and that's when we should get done. But if you slack and do whatever its gonna take longer and you won't be able to get home until much later. The sooner we start the sooner we finish and the sooner we can all go home before sundown. Now is that understood?

All in unision: Sir yes sir!

Assistant: Alright then. Get a move on. Get in line and get a cart. Don't be picky.

(Everyone chooses a cart and are ready)

Now as I was saying, do this together in a group of two. Start now and don't take all day.

(They all nod and go into town collecting bodies. Cordelle and David team up with their cart of bodies and asking around town if they have bodies they'd want to claim. When the bodies stack on top one another and starts to get heavy they go onto the next one)

(The other bodies look as though their necks have been snapped as Cordelle couldn't help but notice a rope mark on the neck of a woman when she sets the body down onto the cart. Then another one of a man. Same thing. Then another body, the face looks all gray and the eyes open. Must have died from a sickness of some sorts none the less, they roll the cart into the digging site and start piling up the bodies as much as possible and starts to dig holes trying to bury all of them before the sun goes down)

*********

Assistant: Alright. I could say we did a good job today. But for some, I'm not so impressed. Some of you didn't gather enough bodies today and some of you didn't dig deep enough holes in enough matter of time. But we could all go home now. With that being said, have a good night. See you all tomorrow.

(They all nod and talk amongst themselves while leaving the graveyard Cordelle and David both walk back to her house but there are two people standing there by her house in a worried look)

Woman: David! Where the hell have you been!?

David: Mom?

Man: Me and your mother have been worried sick about you! How could you run off like that!?

David: I--I...

Woman: Don't have a good excuse? I thought so. Let's go now. Were leaving!

David: No! I don't want to go! Everything is out of control at home, it isn't fair! Cordelle, please don't let them take me!

Woman: That girl doesn't want you here!

Cordelle: I think maybe he should stay here with me for now until things settle down at home.

Woman: Don't get into things that don't concern you!

Cordelle: He seems very distressed. Please. Just let him stay here for one more night.

Woman: Hey. I know you...you're that late blacksmith's daughter aren't you?

(She gives Cordelle a hard look then she says in a disgusting manner)

Woman: What do you want with our son!? Surely he can't be associating with someone like you! That's a disgrace. A blacksmith's daughter. I should've known he was here. Come on David. We're leaving. If you ever associate with our son again, you're going straight into the jail cell! How dare you bring our son into this disgusting house of yours.

(They forcefully take David away with them and Cordelle stands there brokenhearted. Not because of what David's mother told her but because when she had just made a friend even if he wasnt her age, He was taken away from her just like that.

Woman to David: You will not be working at that place ever again! We'll find you something else to do.

David: But mom I---

(Then he's met with a strike across the face by his mom. He holds his cheek from the strike)

Woman: I don't wanna hear it. We'll talk about it at home!
