Chapter 20 The Voice that spoke up
(the only people there at the small building is The Reverend, The doctor, Nigel, and Victor it's a little over 12 Midnight)
Reverend Johnson: any updates so far?
Doctor: None that I can gather. I sent up the bodies up to examination.
Reverend Johnson: And?
Doctor: Based on the information I've gathered, so far, it looks like any other drowning. There is no in between. Maybe two other people gathered around and punched one of them and drowned them to death. That's all I can gather. But the blood wasn't coming out of their nose so maybe they got knocked in the mouth.
(Then Reverend Johnson says in an upset tone)
Reverend Johnson: Thats it? I'm not paying you to theorize. Im paying you to get to the bottom of the truth! You find out more before someone else kills another person or I will see to it you lose your job! Do I make myself clear!?
Doctor: Yes, Reverend.
(Then Reverend Johnson pauses for a second)
Doctor: What is it, sir?
Reverend: Something of what you said. Blood and drowning.
Doctor: What about it?
Reverend: Could be the thing only a witch can do...
Victor: I remember what you said, Reverend! If someone dies from being dunked in the ocean and killed from drowning they're not witches, but then if a witch is dunked in the ocean...
Reverend Johnson: Conduct your analysis again, Doctor. We may get to the bottom of the truth.
Nigel: But how do we know that if a witch is suspected of doing this, that the witch won't emmulate a drowning. Isn't that possible?
Victor: Where did you get that visualization from?
Nigel: Oh shut up, Victor. I'm just saying.
(Then Reverend Johnson ignores their saying)
Reverend Johnson: I say run through it again Doctor. In the meantime, be in touch. And remember what I said before.
Doctor: Yes, Reverend...
5 A.M. EXT: CORDELLE'S HOUSE
(when Cordelle gets ready for work after her argument with Colin from yesterday, she goes to be on her way when she's about to head out the door she opens it until...)
Man: Cordelle Godiva?
Cordelle: What is this?
Man 2: Come with us, Ms. Godiva. It's important.
(They Are seen wearing important worker suits she does as they say as she looks at them sketchy. They work for the cells by the Jail and she goes ahead with them as they look stronger and tougher than her so there's no use running and trying to escape)
Cordelle: Where are you taking me? Where am I going?
(One of the men opens the jail bar)
Man: Get in and wait.
(She has no choice but to do as they say she gets inside the bars as they close it and lock it up with a classic brass key)
7 AM EXT. THE PUBLIC TOWN
Announcer: There is a meeting in the church, today. All of you must attend.
By order of the counsel.
Nathaniel: is it mandatory?
Colin: I don't know but I don't have a good feeling about this.
(Everyone makes their way to the judge house and everyone has a seat on the long long benches. Then when everyone is settled down, and the Reverend comes along)
Reverend Johnson: This here is a trial. Though this is gonna be different. No one dies today. Not yet anyway. Without further ado, I call (pause) Cordelle Godiva to the stand and to come up here.
(A group of town police bring in Cordelle who is tied in shackles and chains. She has her head low and doesn't bother to make eye contact but she catches a few stares and other people shaking their heads at her. Then finally, she makes her way to the front and the Reverend makes her sit down having a town guard keep watch of her two feet away)
Reverend Johnson: Do you know why you're here, Cordelle?
Cordelle: Yes.
Reverend Johnson: Why are you here?
Cordelle: Because you have proof of my whereabouts about the two men that died by the river.
Judge: And what do you plead?
Cordelle: Not guilty by innocence.
Reverend Johnson: We'll see about that.
Judge: Please permit your case.
Reverend Johnson: To the person who came forward with this information, would you come up to the front? (Pause) Austin Fahlmeese?
(The guy from the building house the one that Cordelle saved from the attempted lynching)
(austin comes up to the front)
What did you see that night?
Austin: I saw Cordelle come back into town.
Reverend Johnson: And why were you out, Austin?
Austin: I was at the pub but I didn't get that drunk. I know what I saw.
Reverend Johnson: Did you see Cordelle attempt the allege murder?
Austin: No. But I saw her in what look like a state of madness.
Judge: Do elaborate.
Austin: I couldn't tell for sure. But it look like her eyes were a weird color. They weren't the color they are now. And she was walking back into town in a strange way. I saw it from more than a couple feet away.
Reverend Johnson: (he shakes his head, not enough to convict her)
You can step down, now.
(Austin steps down)
Cordelle: you've gotta be kidding me.
(Then she stands up and Reverend Johnson puts his attention back to Cordelle)
Cordelle: Where was all of this when everyone in town was coming after my family and I? Making us look like criminals.
(Then she looks around and looks at the people, even Colin that looks at her in a serious way)
You see,A long time ago, someone threw a brick at my old house with a note attached that said "get out of Salem now, or else..." When we brought this over to the courthouse attention they dismissed it. They said "lack of evidence" but everyone knows that people in Salem get away with everything and no one cares. You try so hard to make it look like you care about justice but you really don't. You don't care about the truth. And i could go on and on about stories about how the town of Salem failed my family. My family and I. Even though my father is dead, me and my mom still secretly live in fear for the worse to happen. But nobody cares. And anybody who does this evil or speaks of this evil or even sees the evil and does nothing to stop it, you are just as culpable. So go ahead and send me to trial. Because everyone in the future will just remember you as the pure scum of the earth.
(She sits back down and Reverend Johnson dismisses her)
Reverend Johnson: Are you done, now? Ridiculous. This trial is dismissed for now. More information as it develops. I'll hand it over to you now, Judge.
Judge: Because of this insufficient proof, Ms. Godiva you are free to go.
(He pounds the gavel) Court adjourned.
(When Cordelle is freed from the shackles and zip ties Reverend Johnson comes up to her and says something)
Reverend Johnson: You may have fooled the whole town with your innocence, but I'll get down to the bottom of this. And you.
Cordelle: You can't prove anything.
Reverend Johnson: Really? What about the cracked eggs by the front of my house, hmm? And the spiders that came out of it?
Cordelle: Sounds like someone has it out for you, hmm? I wouldn't dare mess with you. You're not worth my time, or anybody else's time, either.
Reverend Johnson: You're lucky I'm JUST the Reverend and not in charge of this town because if it were up to me, I would have that rope snap your neck it would make your body dangle up 6 feet above the ground.
Cordelle: Yeah? And why haven't you done that yet?
(He stays quiet for a second as if not knowing more to say)
Cordelle: Yeah alright, I thought so.
(She walks out of the court house ignoring everyone else and not bothering to look at Colin when he was still in the courthouse)
INT. CORDELLE'S HOUSE
(Colin comes over to Cordelle's house and brings a small piece offering to her. A small red rose he smiles at her weakly)
Colin: I just wanted to come by and say I feel really bad about what happened. It was a wrong choice of words for me. And I apologize. I know, I know, this sounds very stupid and unoriginal but this one rose, is for you.
(He hands it to Cordelle and she accepts it)
Cordelle: Thank you. And I'm sorry about yesterday too.
Colin: That was some speech you gave.
Cordelle: Don't even remind me.
Colin: What were they talking about with the whole dead bodies by the river and with Austin?
Cordelle: (she gives a weak smile) I'll tell you about it, someday. But not now, but I will.
(Before theyre able to finish, He looks to his right and left and before Cordelle knows it Colin quickly puts both his hands on her shoulders and forces her into the house it all happens so fast, Cordelle gets a little mad but says in a stern voice)
Cordelle: Stop pushing! What are you doing!?
(Then she hears a click sound of Colin locking the door)
Cordelle: Why did you lock the door? Colin!
(He looks back at her)
Colin: To make sure, no one overhears us. Or they're eavesdropping.
Cordelle: What are you--
Colin: Cordelle...can I trust you?
Cordelle: You already know you can. What's this all about?
Colin: You have to swear you won't tell anyone about this.
Cordelle: who am I gonna tell? I don't have any friends.
Colin: Oh, thanks.
Cordelle: (she sighs in a frustrating way) you know what I mean!
Colin: the thing I wanna tell you about, is Nigel.
Cordelle: What about him?
Colin: I've been thinking all day about what you said. And I didn't wanna believe it at first either, but I think there seriously is something wrong with him. Maybe he's been like that forever or I'm just barely opening my eyes about it.
Cordelle: What do you mean there's something wrong with him?
Colin: Everybody talks about him and says him and his dad do bad things like blackmail, corruption,or even rumored to own black markets not just here, but in different countries. Like I said, I didn't want to believe it, but I feel like it's true.
Cordelle: They were never caught?
Colin: Not in the slightest.
Cordelle: How do you know?
Colin: Because when we were getting wasted in that pub together, he told me that his father and him can do whatever they want and no one can do anything about it. As long as they're contributing to Salem or anything else, they hold power.
Cordelle: I have never heard anything like that. But I guess it makes sense.
Colin: He can do whatever he wants to anything he touches or to anyone. And no one can do anything about it.
(This scares Cordelle considering what happened to her three years ago)
Cordelle: What about him leaving you? Did you ask?
Colin: He said you were hanging out with us too and I blacked out and didn't know more.
Cordelle: That's a lie. I wasn't there. I would never hang out with him.
Colin: well what about back then?
Cordelle: That was then, this is now.
Colin: I know you weren't there the whole time. I wanted to see if it was true, that, what you said was true. And he didn't tell me the whole truth. So I sort of know now.
Cordelle: Maybe you shouldn't be around him. You never know if you could get hurt or killed because of him.
Colin: I don't know. He's my friend I wanna help him but, if this is truly him, then...I don't know.
Cordelle: His father is the same way, too?
Colin: I don't know his father all that well. I mean his father was friends with my father and that's sort of how we know each other.
Cordelle: His mother has to know something of the situation.
Colin: She won't. She doesn't care.
Cordelle: Why do you say that?
Colin: Did Nigel ever tell you, his mother was traveling all abroad the country not being around her family?
Cordelle: He did mention it when I first asked him, why?
Colin: His mother... abandoned them. She isn't really traveling around the world. It's been like that for a while now.
(She shakes her head. It all makes sense to her now why Nigel is the way he is, especially with women)
Cordelle: Well even if it's true, it doesn't give him an excuse to terrorize people and make them feel like they're powerless. They're more inferior.
Colin: I get what you mean. I do. But I don't think he's gonna listen to reason.
Cordelle: there is no reasoning with someone like him, Colin. Maybe you should stay away from him. You never know what he could do.
Colin: I don't know, Cordelle. It's not as easy as it seems. He's my friend. He's been there for me when I was going through a hard time.
Cordelle: Even friends can hide in sheep's clothing. If he has power in this town, he'll take advantage. He'll hold power over you.
Colin: (his back is turned away as she's talking to him then he goes back and touches both her shoulders. He looks at her in the eyes) He could do the same to you, right?
(She looks at his hand on her shoulder then back at him)
Cordelle: He already has...
Colin: What are you talking about?
Cordelle: (she shakes her head) Never mind. It doesn't matter. Besides, you're friends. Even if I know you're not like anything, maybe it's safe you don't know.
Colin: Come on, Cordelle. Don't shut me out. What power does he have over you?
Cordelle: He did something to me, okay?
Colin: What did he do?
Cordelle: I will tell you, but not right now. Not yet anyway. But just trust me. Can you do that?
Colin: You know I will. I'm not going anywhere. You're not getting rid of me, that easily.
(And just like that, Cordelle forgets the bad things for right now and focuses on the reassurance that someone stands by her side)
(She goes ahead and gives him a hug wrapping her arms around him as he hugs her back)
Colin: I'm not going anywhere, you hear me?
(She nods in agreement)
