Chapter 2 Deed is Done
*Its 6 AM, Cordells gets up and yawns getting out of her bed readying herself for the day. She slept with the bandaid on her neck from last night. She heads on over to the bathroom to take a shower taking the bandaid off. When her shower is done, she looks in the mirror while draining her wet hair and discovers something shocking about her neck. She tilts her head left and right*
Cordelle: What happened to the cut? *she looks again* No...this isn't happening. It just...disappeared...like nothing happened.
(Then she hears sounds of coughing, retching and throwing up. She goes into the other room to find her mom in the toilet throwing up the last remains of liquor. Cordelle goes over to her and holds her mother's hair while she finishes throwing up. And when her mother is done, she lays her head there on the toilet seat)
Cordelle: Come on, mom. Let's get you back to bed.
(Astora Godiva has dark black hair and brown eyes. She appears to be taller than Cordelle by three inches. She's a woman in her mid 40's)
Astora: Get me more beer.
(Cordelle wipes her mouth full of vomit off with a thick cloth in the bathroom and throws it in the hamper)
Cordelle: Not right now. You just threw up. You're gonna strain yourself more.
Astora: Come on, please?
Cordelle: No. Maybe later.
Astora: I hate you, you spoiled little brat! Do you know that? I'm your mother I do everything for you and that's how you talk to me?
Cordelle: Its for your own good.
(She helps her mother back to bed)
Astora: You're so selfish, Cordelle. I'm ashamed to even have you as my daughter.
Cordelle: I have to get ready for work now.
(She ignores her mothers demeaning insults and leaves the room leaving her mother to lay in bed. She goes back go her room and gets herself ready to go go her job. A red shirt and overalls to get herself ready. She even wears a high ponytail and gets her equipment ready. Thick gloves, and her shovel. Before she leaves, she makes breakfast real quick for her mom and leaves it in her room. She takes a quick glimpse and sees Astora already crashed out in bed. Cordelle goes on her way to work.
*******
Worker: Coffee?
*Cordelle takes it*
Cordelle: Thanks. I didn't have time today to get a quick pick-me-up.
Larry: Back to work everyone!
(Everyone does)
Cordelle, could you come over here for a moment?
*she goes over to him*
Cordelle: Yes?
Larry: How are you doing since last night?
(She folds her arms together)
Cordelle: Fine. Why do you ask?
Larry: When you were digging all day, you kept looking over your shoulder.
Cordelle: You gotta be aware right?
(He looks at her neck)
Larry: What happened to that cut on your neck?
Cordelle: What?
Larry: Its not on there anymore. It's gone, just like that. That's not normal.
Cordelle: I don't know. I'm a quick healer I guess.
Larry: That's strange. That wound should have healed up in like a few weeks. Not go away for one day.
Cordelle:
(she shrugs it off like it's not a big deal)
I don't know what to tell you, Larry. It's gone. But I don't know why. Is there something else?
Larry: Yeah. I almost forgot. Reverend Johnson wants to see you later on today.
Cordelle: Did he say what it was about?
Larry: Its about the man who attacked you last night.
Cordelle: What does he want with me?
Larry: He didn't say. But you should go. Wouldn't wanna keep the man waiting later on.
Cordelle: Sure. Yeah. Okay. I'll go. Larry: Get back to work.
Cordelle: Right.
(She goes back to digging her hole with David)
******
(Night time approaches and it's now time for Cordelle to go to the Reverend's chambers she knocks on the door and one of Reverend's workers comes over)
Worker: Yes?
Cordelle: Reverend Johnson wanted me to come. He wanted to talk to me about something.
(Then the reverend comes)
Reverend: Ah. Child. Indeed you are right. Come. Walk with me. We have business to discuss. That'll be all.
(He closes the door behind him and goes outside with her to the prison places)
Reverend: Yes I wanted to discuss something with you about the lowly scoundrel to attacked you yesterday.
Cordelle: Well as you can see theres nothing to discuss. I'm fine and unharmed.
(Theyre here at the prison place where the man who attacked Cordelle is locked up inside the bar cage like an animal)
Reverend: His court date is coming up soon.
Cordelle: Court date?
Reverend: This isn't the first time he's had a run in within Salem you know. If convicted, he could be hanged for his actions.
Cordelle: What? No. N-No. Don't kill him because of me.
Reverend: Its not just you. He's been committing crimes all around Salem.
Cordelle: His father just got hung reverend. He's obviously angry. Don't do this to him. Please there has to be another way.
Reverend: This is not your fight, Cordelle. Don't interfere with the investigation.
Cordelle: Investigation? Reverend, please.
Reverend: Don't defend that monster, Cordelle. I'm telling you this now. Stay out of it. Why are you gaining sympathy for someone like him? *Pause* Oh i see. Just because your father died three years ago from a sickness you think the two of you have something in common? No. The bet is off. His sentence will come soon. This is grownup talk. And you're just a child. You wouldn't understand.
Cordelle: I'm not a child. I'm going to be an adult soon.
Reverend: Really. If you're an adult, why don't you have your own place? Your mother is bedridden isn't she? And you're taking care of her. Why not hire a maid to do all that work so you don't have to.
Cordelle: Sorry, Reverend. That's none of your business.
Reverend: Proving my point, exactly. Stay out of matters, got it? I'll have my men escort you back home.
Cordelle: That's not neccessary. I can find my own way back home.
(She leaves having the Reverend be by himself)
Reverend: That cut on her neck...sounds awfully suspicious how it healed so quickly...
(She goes over to the pub to pick up a bottle of beer for her mom that was complaining to her this morning. She thanks the pub owner and goes on her way back to the house. When she goes to her mom's room, she sets the beer on the night stand having her mom crashed out. She sighs and goes over to the kitchen to cook some dinner. Some soup. She brings the soup to her mom's room before eating herself and sits down on the small round kitchen table eating the soup she cooked on the stove. She feels her neck and doesn't feel the cut on it anymore. She feels worried about what's going on with her neck.
Cordelle: No. I'm sure it's nothing.
(She feels all tense and anxious about the suspicion of her neck healing up that fast)
*then theres a knock on the door; three times. At first it spooked Cordelle but she goes over to the door and answers it. Its David. Not looking up to Cordelle at all*
Cordelle: David. What are you doing here?
(He doesn't speak at first)
Cordelle: Did something happen at your house?
(Then he speaks)
David: Please don't tell my mom and dad I'm here.
Cordelle: What happened? Come inside before someone sees you.
(He does and they go over to the kitchen table)
David: I keep having these...bad dreams about the other day.
Cordelle: The man who got hung?
(He nods)
David: I can't get him out of my head.
Cordelle: What did your parents have to say?
David: I told them about it. All they told me was to grow up and forget about it. They even said I just want attention just because I'm the oldest.
Cordelle: I'm so sorry David. That's messed up.
(She shakes her head)
David: What should I do?
Cordelle: First thing first. You should never try to block it out of your memory it'll only drive you crazy.
David: Have you ever had to go through something like that?
*she looks out the window and back at him*
Cordelle: Yeah...I have.
David: What'd you do about it?
Cordelle: (she sighs) i...never told anyone about these dreams I had. I still have trouble sleeping to this day... I guess you're the first I've told about it.
David: Oh.
(He looks down sadly)
Cordelle: You can't sleep whatsoever?
David: No. Everytime I do, he keeps reappearing and my parents won't listen.
Cordelle: I'll get you some water. Help calm you down.
(She goes to get him a cup of water from the tap and hands it to him)
David: Could I maybe stay here? I don't have anywhere else to go.
Cordelle: Yeah. Sure. But we do need to tell your parents where you're at eventually.
David: No. They won't listen.
Cordelle: How about this? When you tell them what's going on, I'll be there if they ever come here and ask what you're doing. What do you say?
David: Ok. I guess.
